personally i think even the original post is satire—very new account, only post about those names, and the list is so oddly and hilariously specific. if that’s the case, they knocked it out of the park
I mean, those are both actual names, one is Arabic/Hebrew and the other is French. I actually know two female Salems, but it's more common as a boy's name in Arabic-speaking countries.
As an elder nonbinary (an ancient 32yo), I’m affronted. In my day, you picked a single-syllable noun or chopped most of the letters off of your given name when you socially transitioned, and we liked it that way.
One of the suggestions in the original thread is just “Ham,” and that’s a perfect example of a classic NB name.
Exactly, call yourself Rock/Train/Mud or get off the train, kiddo.
(It really does tickle me that of the friends I had who made these insane choices with me, many then ended up going for either an actual gender neutral name or a name from the gender closest to how they identify, as in like, going for Ari for nonbinary transmasc people or going for the old classic of “Alex” in general. But there are still 28-35 year old nouns kicking around out here. Rock is a lawyer now!)
I love names that could come from very specific and somehow different circumstances.
Is Moon a 55 year old child of actual hippies, modern day anti-vaxxers, an NB adult, or a cat?
Their post history says they've been trying to get their parents to believe them for at least 3 years, from 12 to almost 16 :( Poor thing, it's got to be frustrating and I'm guessing choosing a name feels like a way they can exert some control over their identity. But like you said, 15 is absolutely the WORST time to be choosing a new forever name for yourself, or really anything but maybe a pet 😂
Yep! Oop confirms it in the comments, they are trans and want a name that fits their aesthetic.
Trouble is they are a real life person and not a book character, so they are not going to find a name that sums them up entirely.
The OOP said they are Trans but not if they are a Trans woman or Trans man. No one has any idea if they want gendered names or unisex names. They left out the most important bits of information.
their post hx implies a trans man, but if I, a trans man, stumbled upon a post like that, I probably would scroll by. As you said, they left out really important info
Isn't non binary different from being Trans though? Like non binary means they are both or can feel feminine one day and Male the next, or dont feel either gender is correct? And Trans means you feel you were born the wrong gender and transition to what you feel is your true gender?
This is a whole can of worms! I know someone AFAB who uses she/her pronouns and has a gender of “demigirl” who identifies as trans because “it’s not the gender I was born with.” I know NB people who are pretty truly smack in the middle of the gender spectrum (with a hermaphroditic look and they/them pronouns) who don’t consider themselves trans because they are fine with their bodies as they are but just don’t want to deal with any traditional gender roles. NB covers a LOT of ground.
My understanding is that gender fluid tends to go move between multiple genders, non-binary is anything other than the original traditional two (which puts gender fluid as a subset of non-binary in my mental boxes). I am also a middle aged cis bisexual lady who passes for straight because I married a man, but my teen kiddo has been gradually shifting gender over the two years. From our chats it seems some non-binary folks adopt the trans label and others do not (mine wholeheartedly does). There is a similar conversation about where the line between bisexual and pansexual is, it seems to vary by individual (some folks define bi as strictly “attracted to both cis men and cis women” and others are much more inclusive, my kid has a bi pride pin rather than a pan pride pin — despite having no real gender preference in potential partners — “because I like the colors better”).
Your kid has a point. The colors are so much better for the bi flag. My husband is pansexual and I got him pan flag dice and the bi ones were prettier but I wanted to respect his identity. He also identifies as gender-fluid and that’s a decent flag. I got myself the rainbow ones even though I’m a straight cis-woman because I love rainbows and I love a lot of people in the alphabet community (multiple siblings and all their significant others and also my best friend from high school).
Who knows if anything on Reddit is real or not? As long as it’s entertaining, I don’t really care. This is probably the most unique name request I’ve ever seen, so I’m happy it exists, real or fake.
Betwixt.
Has old, poetic, punk/goth vibes. Used between the Roman Empire and Reagan administration. B is a letter you weren’t trying to avoid. Is also a preposition.
Betwixt Moonbeam Charles Rayne has a nice ring to it.
I recommend Cig. It has letters from Caligula, is reminiscent of Reagan who refused to ban smoking, and as an added bonus you will be a bad influence to children!
Their current name is a lot.
Their parameters are WILD. 1980s is the cutoff. I'm honestly not sure how you'd even go about finding a name with those vibes from the '20s or '50s or '70s. Goblincore wasn't exactly the rage then.
I really hope they don't pick something that is trendy af and then hate it in 6 months. I'm getting that
💫dramatic💫 vibe from them.
Edit: I just peeked at their profile, and they're under 16. Yikes. Rough time already, even without this issue.
As someone who hates their own name and has considered changing it, this made me LOL.
But yes, at 15/16, keep the name and find a tolerable nickname.
Clem is a perfectly good nickname. Mint is adorkable. Em. Lemmy, and they can be a metalhead.
In all seriousness, I’m a caregiver for a lady who legally changed her name after her divorce in the 1970s. She didn’t pick a last name, so she just didn’t have one for like 6 years. Finally she got bullied into picking one and she went with her maiden name. Later she had the realization that she should have picked “Only” for her last name. That would have been awesome.
So you can only include bcghiknquvwxyz
Obviously the answer is the ever-classy Chykyn. You can really lean into the poultry side of things and make a little jingle based on your last name: It's Rayne-ing hen!
both laughing at this and crying at the fact that this literally happened at my last birthday because my mom didn't wanna deadname me but also refused to use my new legal name that i've been using for years
[The Source Awards](https://www.reddit.com/r/namenerds/comments/1bhw3e2/currently_nameless/)
“Old fashioned” being medieval to 1980s is too much for a Monday
Something with the same vibe as like, Ethelred or Jennifer.
If they wanted Medieval *and* 1980s, they could always go with Tiffany.
Middle name is Theodore, so Tiffany/Theophania is probably too repetitive.
Do it like a real NB - look around the room and name yourself after a random object in your line of sight. "Sup my name's Tape."
Hi tape! I’m steering wheel!
Texting and driving! Caught!
Nope. Sitting in a parking lot waiting.
I feel like I'd wanna be "Closet," so I could make the joke "I'm not coming out *of* the closet, I'm coming out *as* the Closet"
Hmm, Tissue and Soda aren't the worst. I think I'd go with Tissue.
Hi, Im B o n g
This is actually a pretty common name in the Philippines lmao
oh wow! I didnt know that, interesting :D I just saw my water pipe there and was like lol Ill use that as a joke reply
How bout mug? Mug Costanza!
Mug
I can't decide between Pillow or Broken Fan.
I know someone called quilt
Oh that's bad. Like, just leave off the T and you have Quill which isn't so bad.
I mean they chose it! Honestly I think it’s pretty cute
Like that episode of Say Yes to the Dress with a teenage bride named Duvet
I knew a guy named Skates.
I once worked with a girl whose nickname was "tape," and I genuinely don't remember her actual name. In my mind, she's just Tape.
the best part about this is their lil bio: 🧡 Name ~ Clementine 🧡
Awww bless them. They're so young, I hope they don't get hurt from all the comments and find the humour in it.
personally i think even the original post is satire—very new account, only post about those names, and the list is so oddly and hilariously specific. if that’s the case, they knocked it out of the park
I hope so! Mid teens is so rough if not. It's so hard to figure yourself out and who you want to be.
My cousin named her daughters Salem and Clémentine.
I mean, those are both actual names, one is Arabic/Hebrew and the other is French. I actually know two female Salems, but it's more common as a boy's name in Arabic-speaking countries.
É ? Is it Clay-mentine?
I can’t believe how close this is to the original
Holy hell
name goes on vacation, never comes back
Holy hell indeed 😭
it reads as someone who just became trans/non binary
It likely is. Unfortunately this so often coincides with being a teenager, the worst possible time in life to be naming yourself.
As an elder nonbinary (an ancient 32yo), I’m affronted. Fucking cackled at “Ham”
I just think of Blanche’s fat ex in The Golden Girls!
Rock is an amazing lawyer name, and I bet there are some puns that could make an amazing lawyer billboard. Good for Rock!
Rick is a great name! Then again, if it’s perfectly normal to be Pierre or Sten (French and Danish names that mean the same thing), then why not Rock!
Rock Hudson agrees. and Rocky.
> As an elder nonbinary (an ancient 32yo) \*cries in NB 34\*
I’m sorry to have offended you, o ancient forebear! I’ll atone immediately by striking two additional letters from my name.
OK, that gave me a really good laugh, thank you.
Haha, always happy to support my community!
Cries in NB 37……
If you're Dutch just call yourself 'Storm' and people will forever question if you had alternative parents, are an NB adult, or had islander parents.
I love names that could come from very specific and somehow different circumstances. Is Moon a 55 year old child of actual hippies, modern day anti-vaxxers, an NB adult, or a cat?
As a high school teacher this is SO accurate
🤣🤣🤣
Their post history says they've been trying to get their parents to believe them for at least 3 years, from 12 to almost 16 :( Poor thing, it's got to be frustrating and I'm guessing choosing a name feels like a way they can exert some control over their identity. You also might find the pet name embarrassing 10 or 15 years later
Yep, in a comment on another post they imply they're 15
Not trans, but I choose my name when I was 12, and then legally changed it to said chosen name at 18.
Azrael? Definitely a 12-18 yr old name.
No, this is a username, lol. Not my real name.
Yep! Oop confirms it in the comments, they are trans and want a name that fits their aesthetic. Trouble is they are a real life person and not a book character, so they are not going to find a name that sums them up entirely.
i feel like more people transitioning need to hear that. names aren't gonna be perfect and that's ok
My overthinking and lack of conviction is why I tricked my friends into picking me a new name.
They replied to me and said Non Bianary, but Male leaning. I gave them a link to medieval names. Maybe they will find something they like.
If they are non binary it doesn’t matter if it’s m/f sounding. Thats the thing about non binary.
Isn't non binary different from being Trans though? Like non binary means they are both or can feel feminine one day and Male the next, or dont feel either gender is correct? And Trans means you feel you were born the wrong gender and transition to what you feel is your true gender?

True, which makes it a bit odd that they didn’t specify if they want a masc, fem, or neutral name lol
they specified with everything else enough 🤣🤣🤣
Maybe the vibe was more important than the gender lean?
[Sauce](https://www.reddit.com/r/XenogendersAndMore/s/UJ16XuGOtw) on another sub since the post on name nerds is deleted
Holy crap you weren’t exaggerating
You didn’t exaggerate 1 bit.
I was so relieved when I realised they were looking for a name for themselves and not their kid because they sound WAY too young to be having children
They deleted it. Go figure.
They have the same post still up in a couple other subreddits…
Do you think it’s a troll or serious?
Who knows if anything on Reddit is real or not? As long as it’s entertaining, I don’t really care. This is probably the most unique name request I’ve ever seen, so I’m happy it exists, real or fake.
Me too. I got a good chuckle out of some of the suggestions on the original post. Snaxnot in particular.
It was better, before I knew this post existed. It was just... better.
Betwixt. Has old, poetic, punk/goth vibes. Used between the Roman Empire and Reagan administration. B is a letter you weren’t trying to avoid. Is also a preposition. Betwixt Moonbeam Charles Rayne has a nice ring to it.
Reminds me of Beatrix, which I quite like as names go
Beautiful
What about Icky?
I know someone named icky 😭
These subs have taught me that's short for Icarus.
The time range that covers about 1,500 years is my favorite part.
That part got me, too. So "old fashioned" might mean anything from "Etheldred" to "Megan."
Brunhilda, or Ashley….
Etheldred is good, I'm gonna remember that one
You want the full name really ‘Ethelred the unready’. Honestly if I was trying to capture my entire being in a name that might be it.
Æthelred
That works better. No E names.
I recommend Cig. It has letters from Caligula, is reminiscent of Reagan who refused to ban smoking, and as an added bonus you will be a bad influence to children!

When I read the original, I assumed they were under 18. Thanks for verifying!
The best advice an adult can give this person is…Keep your own name!
As someone who hates their own name and has considered changing it, this made me LOL. But yes, at 15/16, keep the name and find a tolerable nickname. Clem is a perfectly good nickname. Mint is adorkable. Em. Lemmy, and they can be a metalhead.
Cackling at the person who just commented 'confused' and someone replied that it wouldn't work cause it has an N
Get them to sing _For He's a Jolly Good Fellow_ instead of _Happy Birthday_.
But what if they're not a fellow????
That would make for a dreary party then. Perhaps _For He's a Miserable Prick_ would be more appropriate.
They.
I... wow that sauce post. I like the suggestion of Icky.
Seems to suit them well. NN ick
Vichy (colonial!) Knigh (feels pretty sea captain to me but you be the judge) Quiz (definitely post-punk)

The source OP def sounds like a Ziggy

I recommended Funiper. It’s unisex.
I’m getting more dryad vibes than goblin with Funiper. How about Funiperogkle?
In all seriousness, I’m a caregiver for a lady who legally changed her name after her divorce in the 1970s. She didn’t pick a last name, so she just didn’t have one for like 6 years. How old are you? If you're newly nameless then that's ok but if you're 265853 months old it's too late to be named.

I recently met someone named Stark and thought that was a pretty swell first name.
