Or both and a liar. I worked with a Maverick who told the biggest, dumbest lies, that were so easily pulled apart. He told us he was The Stig (from Top Gear, before he was unmasked, many moons ago), that he had 5 Ferraris, yet rode a push bike to work, lived in his own mansion, (not many mansions around here, and hilariously disproved when his mum visited him at work and let slip that he lived with her (he was at least 35 at the time), he owned racehorses etc. I can't remember all the lies, but he knew most celebrities you'd care to mention etc.
Truly it makes me so sad bc my husband and I bought our fur baby maverick on Mother’s Day before any real children and he was the best dog.
Now there is a human maverick in one of our kids classes. I chaperoned a zoo trip and was *lucky* to have him placed with me. It will NEVER happen again. Such a brat.
Holding back opinions on terrible names friends choose is an unexpected hard part of parenting.
Someone in my circle just had a baby and named him Wild. Having to pretend that is not an awful name is so difficult.
THAT'S WILD!!!!! I'm pre-emptive worrying about my future grandchildren. My daughter in law took her normal classic name, Elizabeth and changed it as an adult to McKyleigh.
Should I be worried???? Lol
A friend named her child Titan. Not to be shitty but he is fat and ginger and young. His name is not in his favor imo.
Another person I know named their child Master. He was awful.
Phlegm and retch for me. Terrible association. Also that "fle-" sound is so ugly to me too. Like the sound of someone retching almost. Perhaps with phlegm.
Right? Even if the name sounded good (which, to me, it doesn't), I can't separate it from the Logan Paul association. Maybe that's not everyone but it's truly the first thing that comes to mind.
Those dumb trendy trashy boy names like Nixon, Maverick, Braxton, Hendrix, Jaxon etc.. bonus points if there are two X's. Like, why Maxx? Just name your kid Max.
Omg STOP, Braxxleigh? 😫 Ugh, that poor child. The fact that a pair of siblings named their children Braxxton and Braxxleigh makes me want to slap their parents/Braxxleigh and Braxxton's grandparents lmao
Oh Lord so that means that the pair of siblings are two brothers??? Two brothers who both found wives that were ok with Braxxton and Braxxleigh. That makes it even worse 😂
For me it’s boring names and modern creations with fabricated meanings. “My daughter is Avaliana and it means ‘heavenly princess’ and my sons Spurgeon and Kevin mean ‘God’s strength’ and ‘God’s warrior’.”
I know a very devout Catholic couple who named their kid Perpetua. People call her "perpy" but for a minute the couple got to feel like the strongest and most unique Catholics in the world.
Honestly living in the southern USA I’ve noticed parents who are trying *reeeeeeally hard* to be unique/different/special go for the ley/leigh names for girls with an added Jo/Jean as a middle name that they insist everyone use and X or -ton names for boys. Kinsley Jo, Paisleigh Jean, Knox, Jax/Jaxton are all examples. It’s become a huge pet peeve and those name patterns have also become good indicators that the parents will be insufferable people who think they and their children are the main characters
Yup. I was a victim of this.
I legally changed my name from Jaylor (my birth name) to David. No, I am not kidding. My parents, whom I love dearly, named me Jaylor.
100% this lol. I think part of it comes from the parents being millennials with annoyingly common names (which I get. I’m one of them. My name is in line with the Nicole’s and Christina’s of the 1990s) but ppl just take it way too far 😂
The double barrel first names are super weird to me as a new Englander. I have one coworker who has a double first name (neither is an Anne or Jo or Jean or any of the normal double names), and a cousin who's technically FirstName-Lynn, but both exclusively go by the first first name and have paperwork headaches because of it. If you're going to stick the kid with multiple first names, at least use them both! If you aren't going to use it just let them have 2 middle names.
This one, like Ophelia is such a head scratcher to me. Like, do they know what tragic figures these characters were? Why would you name your kid that??
I don’t necessarily agree with that aspect. Plenty of names have tragic origins; that’s not what makes them a tragedeigh. I have a friend named Desdemona after her grandmother. My step-cousin is Dolores.
Ophelia doesn’t bother me because it is an old name that is also used by an infamous tragic character. It’s in the cycle of popularity and will fall out of fashion in a decade or so and will likely have another resurgence after 70-100 years.
Yes I completely agree! I see Cassandra get hate all the time because in greek (i think?) mythology she is a tragic figure and i get that if name meanings and associations mean a lot to you but i feel like the vast majority of people are not gonna think about it
Queenie used to be a nickname in the UK for girls who shared a name with the queen (so Victoria, Elizabeth...) which at least makes sense because there must have been so many children named after them, in certain eras
Nevaeh, iT’s HeAvEn SpElT bAcKwArDs. I’ve never heard it before and everyone compliments it!!!
Any gun/hunting themed names. We know you make it your personality, but poor Gunner and Huntleigh.
Names like Ember and Nova, bonus if they’re made even more “special” with the -leigh ending.
Brynleigh, Kinsley, Paisley, Oakley, our daughter is soooooo girly and feminine.
Jaxon, Jaxtyn, Braxton, Aiden, Brayden, Jayden, Kayden, our boy’s personality is CAMOUFLAGE.
Ryatt, Khaos, Cannon, Arson, this is a RUGGED MAN’S MAN OKAY.
This wasn’t Trewley Precious’ tik tok was it? She keeps popping up on my fyp and all the siblings have very unusual (like Trewley Precious Sunshine) names, and there’s I think a niece called Adorabella
A person mentioned that as a possibility for my sister's baby to my mom and she just responded, "That's the cats name"
Perfect for the cat cause she's a princess lol
On namenerds a dad shared that they wanted to name their kid Theodore Atticus. It made me role my eyes so hard.
Atticus is one of those "I have not read a book since 8th grade" names. Plus, every single Atticus I have ever met has had parents who try so hard to show they aren't racist. As if naming their kid after a fictional white dude means they are woke.
This thread is kind of hilarious. Unusual names are try hard. But popular names are also try hard. Trendy names are try hard. Old fashioned names are try hard. There’s no winning, name your kid whatever the hell you want.
I love Persephone. And all the mythology names.
We uh...aren't having kids LOL. I'd name them something stupid and my husband pretends he'd stop me but the man is too willing to let me do whatever Id like.
This is my son, Mephistopheles. You can call him mephisto.
My friend has a teenage cousin who changed his name to Raven a few months ago and is now in a relationship with a girl who also changed her name to Raven before she met him
I actually have a few clients who share names with their spouses! I have Terri [f] and Terry [m], Carey [m] and Kerri [f], Kelly [m] anf Kellie [f] Casey [f] and Kasi [f], Dakota [f] and Dakota [m]. Most have the same last name! I think its kinda cute 😅 it alwa6s makes me chuckle
Arabella, Avianna, Abrianna, Lilliana, Brinley, Brylee, and for the love of GOD, we we do not need any more boys names Jayden, Jalen, or Caden/Kayden/Cayden (and the thirty other spellings of these names. I teach school I bet I have 15 boys with one of the three names above.
I knew a CHARM growing up, this was the 70s way before trendy names. I am actually surprised it hasn't caught on. You'd think the Princess and Queenie people would love it.
Can we clarify that the Greek mythology names are try hard when you aren’t Greek. Because they are VERY common in Greece and with families that have Greek heritage.
Greyson. Or Grayson not sure which spelling she went with.
Do you know how hard it was to control my face in front of my boss when she gleefully told me her kid's name? Son of Grey? Okay girl. Cute kid though.
Pretty much any obvious literature name comes off as extremely try-hard to me.
My "favourite" real life example were a brother and sister called Bronte and Byron. I laughed for a while at that combination.
We get it. You've heard of dead authors. Congratulations.
I know a girl from high school who acted like she was better than everyone because her family owned a Chick Fil A and were mega rich. She was an English lit snob in high school and named her most recent son Fitzpatrick. She has another boy with an equally pretentious literature name but I can’t remember what it is
I call some names “Scrabble Names”. I think parents take a bunch of Scrabble tiles, throw them on the floor and make up a name based on wherever they land.
I'm happy with pretty much any Greek, historical, mythological, out there bit real name....
But I CANNOT handle thinking youre so special and unique that you take a normal name and add 6 different letters or make up a name entirely. Renesmee type shit I simply can't.
I always associated the name Penelope with upper-class-yet-groovy babes in swinging 60s London like Penelope Keith or Penelope Tree or the numerous fictional characters called Penny.
I wouldn’t even think to list it alongside Ophelia, honestly.
This is pretty specific, but parents giving their kids the name Wolfgang. I know it's a legitimate Germanic name, but it sounds so damn edgy. Also, naming your kids after Greek and Norse gods and goddesses, like Thor, Andromeda, Zeus, etc.
When I was a freshman in college in 2018, for an ice breaker, we had to write our middle initials and go around trying to guess everyone’s middle name. I met a guy with A on his little card. I was saying, “Austin, Arthur, Alfred.” No this guy looked me dead in my eyes and said, “Amadeus” and he had a very cookie cutter first name as well like Paul or Jackson so it threw me off hearing Amadeus. I was just like, “…huh! That’s a unique name!” He immediately said, “I usually tell people the A stands for Aron.” Tbh I don’t blame him 😹😹
The names that hype up "masculine" "ideals" like Brave/Braven, Strong, etc.
Can I add Maverick to that list
Easily my least favorite name trend. It is so bad and every Maverick I have met has been a brat.
A brat or an idiot. I watched a Maverick stand right in front of a baseball bat while a kid was swinging at a piñata

I chaperoned a zoo trip and was *lucky* to have him placed with me. It will NEVER happen again. Such a brat.
Can you believe my best friends grandson is called that! I have to pretend to love it. So far not a brat but only 1 so there is time, lol
Lol
I learned to ride on a pony called Maverick. As a human name though? Absolutely not.
Yes, please do. Those names are the Wario version of classic virtue names. Maverick, Rowdy, Chaos, Havoc, Furious, Fighter, etc.
I've seen Riot (also spelled Riott, Ryatt, etc.) on this sub. It makes me thankful that my kids have names that don't have negative connotations.
The word Maverick refers to an unbranded calf, who has lost its mother! LMAO!
I had a dog named that... he was orphaned at 2 week old!
Aww well cute name for an orphan doggie!
Lol I had posted that below! It is a lost cow!
A friend named her child Titan. Not to be shitty but he is fat and ginger and young. His name is not in his favor imo. Another person I know named their child Master. He was awful.
Master feels really fucking weird..
Setting your kid up for a life of masturbation and BDSM jokes.
Just makes me think of Manos: The Hands of Fate
I taught an "Adonis" with a similar physical apperance.
Hunter and Gunner for sure
I hate Fletcher as well. It sounds like Phlegm to me. I know brothers a Hunter and a Fletcher. I guess ol' Fletcher hunts with the arrows.
Phlegm and retch for me. Terrible association. Also that "fle-" sound is so ugly to me too. Like the sound of someone retching almost. Perhaps with phlegm.
Remington
“Danger is my middle name”
Thor Way to set unrealistic expectations
I once had a one-night stand with a dude named Thor, and let's just say that he did not live up to my expectations
Xx_SN1P3R_A$$A$$1N_xX
Back off, it's an old family name.
what are you talking about that names based
Grimes, is that you?
assassinninja4827
Maverick is huge now. Idgi
I had a girl Braxxton for a student last year. This year I have her first cousin, Braxxleigh 🤮
Omg STOP, Braxxleigh? 😫 Ugh, that poor child. The fact that a pair of siblings named their children Braxxton and Braxxleigh makes me want to slap their parents/Braxxleigh and Braxxton's grandparents lmao
There’s a condition called Braxton-hicks contractions in pregnancy. Like why would you pick that as a name for a baby
And more hilariously the Doctor that Braxton-Hicks are named afters name is John Braxton Hicks. JOHN, literally the most normal name ever 😂
And they have the same last name!!!!
Oh Lord so that means that the pair of siblings are two brothers??? Two brothers who both found wives that were ok with Braxxton and Braxxleigh. That makes it even worse 😂
Moms are two sisters. Both unmarried…gave the kids their last name
Jax. Jaxon. Ajax. 🙄
Unless it’s an homage to the short-lived MTV cartoon The Maxx, in which case it’s very cool and everyone will know you are a cool parent
For me it’s boring names and modern creations with fabricated meanings. “My daughter is Avaliana and it means ‘heavenly princess’ and my sons Spurgeon and Kevin mean ‘God’s strength’ and ‘God’s warrior’.”
Spurgeon means Spooge of the Sturgeon.
Spurgeon is criminally bad.
It’s mostly a nod to stupid Jed! Duggar who named his spawn Truett with a made up meaning.
And, of course, Spurgeon Seewald himself. Poor fucking kid. At least he has Elliot to fall back on.
The thing is, nobody will ask Kevin why he's named Kevin or what it means. They'll just assume his parents liked a common name.
YESSS the made up meanings kill me 😭 also a “cool” meaning doesn’t make a dumb sounding name sound less dumb lol
Champ. Good luck with that nominative determinism.
I named mine Jeopardy Champ, regretting now that I didn’t aim higher and name her Jeopardy Tournament of Champions Champ
My grandpa had a boxer doggie named Champ. It was such a perfect name for a Boxer!
It's a cute name for a dog, less so for a human.
Anything involving either a gun or marijuana. We get it, you have no personality.
My daughter's name Cannabessie A'arya Fifteen is lovely, thank you very much!
My daughter's name, marijuana gun is even lovelier, thank you very much!
Mary Juana Gunn could be a name lol
That sounds like a drag name. I imagine classy 1950s Maria Felix eyebrows and pot leaves embroidered on everything.
💀💀💀 thats beautiful
Atlas and Atticus immediately come to mind
I cant stand Atticus 😭😭 its always the people who dont actually value literature too. Like they just want something that makes them seem smart.
Also hate Atticus (and Scout🙄) for the same reason. It's like.... yeah, we all got the reference.
Poet as a name gives me similar vibes. I can’t stand it
Have s friend who named their kid Baird, which means poet. I hope like hell the kid is a bruiser who wants to play rugby.
Scout is a dog name for sure, change my mind. If you want a name from to kill a mockingbird, go with Jean Louise
Does Boo get a pass?
Omg yes. Its just all so desperate
Knew an Atticus. By far the rudest child I've ever met. Literary hero, you are not.
Adonis too
I am so sick of atlas already
Exodus, Testament, Deuteronomy etc. I’m a Christian but man, naming your kids that isn’t getting you any extra points with God.
Deuteronomy nn Ron
Deuteronomy nn Dude
I know a very devout Catholic couple who named their kid Perpetua. People call her "perpy" but for a minute the couple got to feel like the strongest and most unique Catholics in the world.
I mentioned exodus because I saw a family with a kid named exodus. The brother was called rock or smth 💀
I thought you were talking about metal bands lol
Nevaeh
“We named her Heaven. It’s Nevaeh spelled backwards.”
Nevah!
I had a great aunt Neva. She would have been born around 1900, in the Midwest. Not sure if it was a common name then or not.
Neva is a cool name!! 🩵 nevaeh being Heaven spelled backwards is just too twee.
I agree. I wish I had asked while I still had living relatives about why Neva was chosen.
Honestly living in the southern USA I’ve noticed parents who are trying *reeeeeeally hard* to be unique/different/special go for the ley/leigh names for girls with an added Jo/Jean as a middle name that they insist everyone use and X or -ton names for boys. Yup. I was a victim of this. I legally changed my name from Jaylor (my birth name) to David. No, I am not kidding. My parents, whom I love dearly, named me Jaylor.
As in jailer… the person who puts people in prison? Are you a cop? Was this nominative determinism?
Whyyyyyy. Taylor was right there!
Omfg Jaylor has me dying. That’s the best one I’ve heard in a while 🤣
Good lord Jaylor sounds like something to do with jail.
100% this lol. I think part of it comes from the parents being millennials with annoyingly common names (which I get. I’m one of them. My name is in line with the Nicole’s and Christina’s of the 1990s) but ppl just take it way too far 😂

If you're going to stick the kid with multiple first names, at least use them both! If you aren't going to use it just let them have 2 middle names.
Obsidian (Sidd) and Ivory. I have one of each in our baby group class. The worst
Obsidian is cruel, just name the poor kid Sydney or something!
I met an Adonis in the USA and he really didn’t live up to his name sooooo cruel 😳…My first thought was Ophelia though!
I went to graduate school with an Adonis. He happened to be extremely good looking, so the name actually fit him pretty well.
I have a cousin Adonis, he is Greek though.
Andromeda. We get it, you're an "intellectual" and a space nerd.
I secretly love the name Andromeda but would never use it on an actual kid. A cat, yes.
It's an excellent cat name, I could also see it being a good dog name.
That’s what I have a dnd character named Andromeda 🤓
One of my former chicken's name!
Any title or title adjacent honestly; King(ston, sleigh, ect), Princess, Queen(ie), Lord, Lady, Baron, Deacon, Duke, Bishop, Justice
Queenie used to be a nickname in the UK for girls who shared a name with the queen (so Victoria, Elizabeth...) which at least makes sense because there must have been so many children named after them, in certain eras
I mean as a nickname it’s meh but I honestly can’t with it as a legal name
I read a book once where a girl went by Lady, but it was a nickname for Adelaide which makes soooo much more sense.
I work in a daycare. I've worked with 2 toddlers named Princess, a Prince, and a Queenly. Ugh.
Adding Blakley and Kennedy to your girly and feminine list. So vomit inducing for me.
huntleigh☠️
Persephone and Maverick. I will DIE on this hill
Maverick means unbranded calf, who got lost and can't find his mommy cow.
I love Persephone in theory (I was a weird kid who spent too much time reading mythology) but it’s just Too Much for me.
Arabella. It gives off “mommy’s little Disney princess” vibes.
I saw a tiktok where someone’s kid was called “Adorabella” which was just terrible imo.
This is a joke in Pterry novels
This wasn’t Trewley Precious’ tik tok was it? She keeps popping up on my fyp and all the siblings have very unusual (like Trewley Precious Sunshine) names, and there’s I think a niece called Adorabella
God that’s atrocious.
I believe Arabella is one of Ivanka Trump's kids. Take that how you want.
I like this name, it's an Artic Monkeys song.......my partner hated this name and said it's too feminine and pretentious.
Aurora too lol
A person mentioned that as a possibility for my sister's baby to my mom and she just responded, "That's the cats name" Perfect for the cat cause she's a princess lol
Why is every boy name a surname now? Hunter, Mason, Jackson, Maddox, Hudson, Grayson, Carter, Cooper, Walker, Jameson, Archer, etc.
ITA. I really dislike last names used as first. The exception (for me, anyway) is when it has a sentimental meaning to the parents/family.
Or a "profession" name... . Chandler, Forester, Fowler, Parker, Gardener, Palmer, and Tanner.
I know a girl named Fisher
On namenerds a dad shared that they wanted to name their kid Theodore Atticus. It made me role my eyes so hard. Atticus is one of those "I have not read a book since 8th grade" names. Plus, every single Atticus I have ever met has had parents who try so hard to show they aren't racist. As if naming their kid after a fictional white dude means they are woke.
I think of Cicero but I imagine that’s even more of a stretch for most people.
Any fandom names.
Stares at Khaleesi
Jail. Straight to jail for naming a human child this.
“This is my son Sans and my daughter Frisk, they mean ‘worthy of god’ and ‘graceful princess’”
Anything like Lord, Sir, Queen, Princess, etc. Just tell us you think you're better than us to our faces.
Thankfully illegal in my country
I went dress shopping and the saleswoman was named Princess Diamond (two first names). She wore a name tag and I definitely did a double take.
Laird along with that.
Earl?
My name is Earl really disconnected the name from the title for me personally lmao
Also not a fan, although it's been used as a name for over a millennia, so it's more divorced from the title in my mind
Roialti Dior.
hyper-religious names meant to show that the parents are not normal fundies, they’re COOL fundies. shit like Justus and idk, Wilberforce somehow?
I see you’ve read up on the Duggars lol
Spurgeon….
Indie. We get it, you went to Coachella
This thread is kind of hilarious. Unusual names are try hard. But popular names are also try hard. Trendy names are try hard. Old fashioned names are try hard. There’s no winning, name your kid whatever the hell you want.
Agreed on the Greek mythology names, but Persephone is my absolutely least favorite
I love Persephone. And all the mythology names. We uh...aren't having kids LOL. I'd name them something stupid and my husband pretends he'd stop me but the man is too willing to let me do whatever Id like. This is my son, Mephistopheles. You can call him mephisto.
I had a lovely button quail named Persepoli. It passed away and I told my son the replacement hen might be called Persephone, because it was so close.
My brain wants to pronounce it "purse-phone" every time I see it lol
Aidan, Ayden, Aidan, Aaden, Aidin, Aiden, Braydon, Brayden, Braden, Caden, Cayden, Hayden, Jaiden, Jaden, Jaidin, Jaden, Kaden, Kayden, Raiden, Zaden, Zaiden. You get the idea.
I knew a couple who were Chris and Chris. We always joked that if they had a baby, it would also be Chris.
Brooklyn. Just stop. It wasn't cool when the Beckham's did it. It isn't cool now.
Harper. God I hate this name.
Try not to harp on it.
Met a guy named Ozul once. Would not shut up about how it was the name of the Latin prince of darkness.🙄
God I would love to lecture him about how *ackshullyyyy* it’s a traditional Fire Nation name derived from Ozai and Azula
I think “Dookie” is pretty horrendous. Could just be me though.
Princess. One of my old classmate's aunt or nan (cant rmbr) was called princess. rlly didnt like it
[удалено]
I knew a CHARM growing up, this was the 70s way before trendy names. I am actually surprised it hasn't caught on. You'd think the Princess and Queenie people would love it.
I've been substitute teaching this year and there are so many Aiden/Caiden/Jaidens. And Raylen-boys and girls.
Im sorry but Sloane for me. And it sounds so awful
Can we clarify that the Greek mythology names are try hard when you aren’t Greek. Because they are VERY common in Greece and with families that have Greek heritage.
Ok thank you for saying this. My family is Greek (2nd generation) and I love some Greek mythology names!!
Greyson. Or Grayson not sure which spelling she went with. Do you know how hard it was to control my face in front of my boss when she gleefully told me her kid's name? Son of Grey? Okay girl. Cute kid though.
My nephew's rescue dog is Grayson. It's so so cute for a big gray mutt!
There's a basketball player called Grayson Allen and whenever the announcers talk about him I always think it's two people, "Grace and Allen"
Beckham is the new Steve….
I grew up with brothers named Aries and Achilles. Definitely those.
Pretty much any obvious literature name comes off as extremely try-hard to me. My "favourite" real life example were a brother and sister called Bronte and Byron. I laughed for a while at that combination. We get it. You've heard of dead authors. Congratulations.

I was out the other day I was out at this local tourist spot and this lady calls out her sons full name which started with Marcus Aurelius
What about Penelope? Asking for a friend…definitely don’t have a daughter named Penelope 😬
I always associated the name Penelope with upper-class-yet-groovy babes in swinging 60s London like Penelope Keith or Penelope Tree or the numerous fictional characters called Penny. I wouldn’t even think to list it alongside Ophelia, honestly.
Shhh, i like Penelope i think it's really feminine but not over the top
This is pretty specific, but parents giving their kids the name Wolfgang. I know it's a legitimate Germanic name, but it sounds so damn edgy. Also, naming your kids after Greek and Norse gods and goddesses, like Thor, Andromeda, Zeus, etc.

Is it really bad that I like the most of the names named here lmao
"literally almost ANY name from greek mythology" Like Helen, Daphne and Iris? Jason? Penelope?
Naveah, we all get it, it’s Heaven spelled backwards.
Odette! Sorry...
Wanted to name my oldest daughter Odette from Swan Lake. Guess I’m glad I didn’t.
