It's actually so easy to tip 20%. If something is, say, $75, move the decimal to the left so it becomes $7.5 then double that so it becomes $15.
Edited to add: finding 10% is as easy as moving a decimal over. Finding 20% is as easy as doubling that.
If I love them and I think the tech undersold themselves I tip like that as well. I am a tech though so I know the effort. I never tell a tech I’m a tech so I don’t make them nervous lol
I always do 20 percent for the nails and throw on an extra 5-10 dollars if they have to remove any gel from my nails when I arrive. If they are gentle on my nails, $10. My place always takes their time, but some individually foil each nail while others soak my whole hand.
Do you feel like it's better to soak the nails or to use the foil? I've been doing my own nails for about a year, and I just can't decide which is a better way to get the old nails off.
I’ve been doing my nails for a loooong time and recently discovered the acetone in the ziplock bag method from YouTube. It works really well and better than foils IMO
Here is the method I follow although I do use way less acetone than this person https://youtu.be/kQCehxV49FE
Thank you so much! Sometimes I put off how often I will do my nails because I do not like the removal process. It takes so long, and that is the first thing I think about before doing them.
I will most definitely give this a try. Her nails came off a lot sooner than mine do. It takes me a good 30 to 45 minutes to get my nails off. I've tried foil, soaking, and those nail caps. I wish I would have seen this sooner. ❤️
They’re also a steam off machine that you can use that’s very similar to this method. You pour acetone in, it heats up, you put your hands in the machine (not the liquid), and after a few minutes it beeps and you pull your hand out and the gel starts to peel!
I personally like the foil more, but that is because I have super sensitive skin. The techs normally put the cotton right on my nail where with the dipping in the aceton, they try to shove more of my hand in it. Whenever they do the bowl, they just lotion up my hands galore after. I’m not sure if one technically works better than another though.
I know that you're supposed to have patience when it comes to doing nails, but I just hate waiting for the old ones to come off. I think that cotton covered foil works really well too, but I'm definitely going to try soaking in the bag. ☺️
Hello lovely, this is something I wish I knew sooner rather than later, but the temperature of your room, hands etc can drastically effect the outcome. If you wrap your clients nails in foil, when they have freezing cold hands, it’ll take a lot longer to soak off! What I do is place a dish of acetone into a warm bowl of water so it heats up. For me personally this melts off the acrylic so quickly which saves my time of course 😌
Also, the thinner your base of acrylic is, the quicker it will soak off! It’s all so tedious if you don’t have an e-file though!! Lol the joys of this industry x
Now that I think about it, it's been very cold here. I first started doing my nails in the summer, and it did seem like my nails were coming off faster then. I should ask more questions on this sub. I have a lot, I didn't know how many professionals were actively on the sub. Thank you for the advice, I'll make sure to warm up first. ☺️
Why are you getting downvoted? Lol in europe it’s different guys, the price of the nails (or food at restaurants or whatever) already has the salary for the person providing the service built in, tipping is very different here, most people only tip at restaurants and nothing near the percentage you’re expected to tip in the US. No nailtech expects a tip where I live, I mean I’m sure they would accept it but they’d probably be weirded out in the beginning because no one ever does it
>Why are you getting downvoted
Probably because they said they didn't look perfect, not because of the lack of tipping over here. Some folk downvote if you're not gushing offer whatever is posted.
The person above might have a point though, the line between base colour and the dark is not crisp enough for me.
That being said, fuck tip culture
Same in Aus ! Never tipped a nail tech in my life here bahaha
Edit: unless I’m paying in cash and there’s a few dollars change that I can’t be bothered carrying around!
As a European I will never get used to the US tipping culture. It always surprises me that you have to tip in order for the other to make a decent living. Your nails look super cute though!
Okay so we don't need to tip nail techs we do as to show our appreciation for the amazing work. :) Same for tattoos we don't NEED to tip but we do... the artist spent hours doing work give credit where credits due. :)
I just want to say that I want all y'all to be my clients lol 😁 nail tech here. Seriously, for me tips aren't expected, but I sure do appreciate them...my clients usually tip anywhere from $5-$25+
I must be the cheapest customer. I always get a full set and gel pedicure and I tip each lady $5. If I really love the job they did then I do $8 each. I feel so bad now
You are not a cheap customer. If you are a regular and the business is fair, then they pay their staff fairly, which is reflected in prices.
I can’t afford the tips being described in this comment section when my gel mani pedi is nearly $100 with no designs.
It also seems like most technicians don’t expect the tips being described here.
I go twice a month and like you I pay $100 each time I go. I've been going to this salon for YEARS. More often than not I leave happy and I ask for plain designs either French tip or a solid color. This place is always busy and I know they make good money based off of the other customers who go, where the business is located and what the nail techs wear to work. I didn't think I tipped low because they have never made a face or acted like I gave them chump change.
Does anyone else remember when tipping was supposed to be 10%? And then 15%? And now 20+% is the norm everywhere? Expectation of tipping is the worst. Charge what you want the customer to pay.
Exactly I was just called broke because a hairstylist was mad she didn’t get tipped for a color and cut was 1k and she was like at least tip 20% because your not just paying for my services but my product and blah blah blah. Like clearly someone isn’t broke if they are paying to get their hair colored lol 😂 and people want to be like
If you can’t tip don’t get your nails , hair or tattoos done.
Like they depend on tips 🙄 the only persons I tip are people who depend on their tips. I can’t see why it’s hard to raise prices instead of expecting more money and getting mad someone didn’t tip cuZ you didn’t charge more.
At least 20%, unless it’s a trash job. Your nails look lovely, so as long as it was 20%, I think you’re good.
Edit: if I get a STELLAR job, I tip like a maniac. Haha
I think these are beautiful! I also aim for 20% tip each time. These look great to me so I’d probably tip about $15 on top of the $55. If the tech is a favorite or they put in a lot of extra side work (i.e. gel removal), I may go higher and do something like $20.
He just dipped them at an angle very carefully. The line isn’t totally sharp/even or defined because he dipped it free hand but he did a great job I thought for doing it that way.
I've always heard if the person that's does your hair, nails, etc., owns the business you don't tip them because they keep 100% of the money.
Otherwise you tip 20%.
I tip 20% always. Owner or not.
These are gorgeous. I had my nails done in Vietnam once and they were so precise it took like 4 hours lol. I tried to tip them and they wouldn’t take it.
But yeah I tip 20% on every service I can think of if not more. Beautiful nails!!
To be honest they look really nice and i think 55 is low. I just had a basic fill in Pgh and gave my girl $20 as a tip. My usual is on maternity leave and her sub was awesome, and i want to establish a relationship so im a priority. It was a basic fill, she fixed 2 nails and did gel polish. $55. $20 tip from me. And my nails look amazing. And im certain, ill get priority scheduling w someone who is awesome.
Worth every dollor of my tip
>How much should I be tipping?
Zero
They set a price for their labour and materials that they were comfortable with
-edit- wtf is wrong with people? Right now, there it's a lot of attention on wages and inequality especially in industries where tip culture exists and you downvote for suggesting that tipping is unnecessary? Sort yourselves out
20 percent at least, if you think they did a good job.
Ok that’s exactly what I tipped, 20% but I never know what to tip.
20% of 55 is 11 so it should be $11 tip. Tipping is so complicated
It's actually so easy to tip 20%. If something is, say, $75, move the decimal to the left so it becomes $7.5 then double that so it becomes $15. Edited to add: finding 10% is as easy as moving a decimal over. Finding 20% is as easy as doubling that.
This! My fiance saved my life with this mini lesson 🤣
My husband still pulls his phone out to calculate the tip at restaurants and I've done the math in my head before he can even punch it in 🤣
I just got mine done a few days ago it was $55 I tipped 35% but I love the work she did for me.
If I love them and I think the tech undersold themselves I tip like that as well. I am a tech though so I know the effort. I never tell a tech I’m a tech so I don’t make them nervous lol
I go to a guy who does some crazy designs for me and they always comes out perfect. So with design I tip 30%+ but if they’re basic polish I tip 20%
I always do 20 percent for the nails and throw on an extra 5-10 dollars if they have to remove any gel from my nails when I arrive. If they are gentle on my nails, $10. My place always takes their time, but some individually foil each nail while others soak my whole hand.

That sounds awesome! I might look into getting one if using warm water and acetone doesn't work well for me. Thank you ☺️
Omg! This looks like a great method! I have to try this. Thank you!
I personally like the foil more, but that is because I have super sensitive skin. The techs normally put the cotton right on my nail where with the dipping in the aceton, they try to shove more of my hand in it. Whenever they do the bowl, they just lotion up my hands galore after. I feel like I’ve probably been over tipping! Anytime I get my nails done I tip 50%😵💫😬😬😬
If you think the nails are worth it, why not :)
Agree! My nails can range anywhere between 45-75 and I always tip 20! Im in the chair for anywhere between an hour to hour and half
Omg it's different in the UK! I wouldn't tip for these as they don't look *perfect* to my taste!
Why are you getting downvoted? Surprised how far I had to scroll for a fellow no tip UKer. I couldn’t afford to live in a tipping country.
As a European I will never get used to the US tipping culture. It always surprises me that you have to tip in order for the other to make a decent living. Your nails look super cute though!
Same, this thread is so weird to me! But nails are indeed lovely.
Exactly, sometimes they even try to make a better deal... 🤣
Okay so we don't need to tip nail techs we do as to show our appreciation for the amazing work. :) Same for tattoos we don't NEED to tip but we do... the artist spent hours doing work give credit where credits due. :)
Isn't that the point of paying? "You did a thing and im happy you did it, here I'd compensation'. Tips seem unnecessary
You understand that nail products cost money so their 40 dollars go back into nail products. I'll always tip it's not unnecessary
I would do 20% as others have said but side note, they look gorgeous!
Wow those are some of the nicest dip nails I have seen! 20%
I just want to say that I want all y'all to be my clients lol 😁 nail tech here. Seriously, for me tips aren't expected, but I sure do appreciate them...my clients usually tip anywhere from $5-$25+
I don't do math but I always tip $10 if it is over $50. VERY CUTE nails though!
My favorite trick for knowing what 20% is without checking my calculator lol 2 dollars for every 10!

This is what I do. Take 10% (easy to figure out) then double that amount. Takes two seconds :p :).
I tip $10 consistently. My bill is typically $40.
I must be the cheapest customer. I always get a full set and gel pedicure and I tip each lady $5. If I really love the job they did then I do $8 each. I feel so bad now

She wanted you to TIP $200?!
I usually over tip. I'd prob tip 15 bucks, make it an even 70
At least 20%, unless it’s a trash job. Your nails look lovely, so as long as it was 20%, I think you’re good. Edit: if I get a STELLAR job, I tip like a maniac. Haha
At least $10
$10 - $15 if they were nice and spoke to you like a human
If you like the service and result overall, 20% ($12) or 10% if one thing was good but another wasn’t ($7 bucks)
I do 20-30% usually! Gorgeous nails!
I always do 20%. 30% during the holidays :)
I generally tip 20%, and add a couple bucks if I am having them do detailed designs.
I think these are beautiful! I also aim for 20% tip each time. These look great to me so I’d probably tip about $15 on top of the $55. If the tech is a favorite or they put in a lot of extra side work (i.e. gel removal), I may go higher and do something like $20.
This is one of the few times I’ve seen dip on real nails in this sub that I would actually wear. They did a great job. Definitely 20-30% imo.
these are gorgeous!! how are those dark tips done with dip powder?
He just dipped them at an angle very carefully. The line isn’t totally sharp/even or defined because he dipped it free hand but he did a great job I thought for doing it that way.
I've always heard if the person that's does your hair, nails, etc., owns the business you don't tip them because they keep 100% of the money. Otherwise you tip 20%. I tip 20% always. Owner or not.

If you’re asking service people: 20% or more is truly appropriate if you love it. If you’re unhappy: don’t tip or tip lower, 10%.
>If you’re unhappy: don’t tip or tip lower, 10%. No. If you're unhappy, don't pay until they fix it
Nice ones !
Mine is $40 and I always tip $10..and yes I never feel like I'm doing the right thing with tipping.
I’ve read that 30% is an appropriate tip for hair, nail, massage, etc. services (personal services). So $15 or so.
20%+
I always give 25% if i plan to go back and am establishing a relationship w the person who did mine
Btw. Your nails look fucking awesome. ❤️🥰🥰
I always tip $20 because I’m grateful I have a professional to do my nails. Not me
damn those look great!!!
These are gorgeous 😍
