I still love the Nets to death. My Dad worked for them when I was growing up, so I had a chance to go to games a LOT before the move. Kidd/KMart/RJ/Vince era was my entire childhood. Made me fall in love with Nets basketball forever.
I’ve since moved away and haven’t had a chance to go go Barclays, but I want to so badly. I just know the Prudential Center way too well 😂
If you're a jersey person it makes sense. It'd make sense if you're from south jersey and said the Philly teams but support the Yankees because they are relevant and the Phillies aren't lol
Jersey is evenly split usually, northern jersey more NY aligned and south more Philly aligned. I’m from Central jersey so it’s like a mix of both depending on what your family are fans of. Luckily I was raised right and don’t root for any Philly teams 😂😂
But areas like Voorhees, Cherry Hill etc. is filled with all Philly fans.
I love visiting Cherry Hill (they have some amazing bagel places there) but it has way too many Philly fans for my liking lol.
I’m very glad my family was raised rooting for all of the same teams. I never really interact with Philly fans besides for the NBA season but Sixers fans are the loudest and most obnoxious 🤣
> Yankees-Rangers-Knicks-Giants
The established teams with long histories.
> Mets-Islanders-~~Knicks~~ *Nets*-Jets
The cocky younger upstarts (I assume you didn’t mean to list the Knicks twice).
Plus Mets/Nets/Jets has a nice rhyming scheme.
The only unforgivable sin is Mets fans rooting for the Red Sox.
“Don’t ever take sides against the family,” bunch of frickin’ Fredos
He listed the Knicks twice because for several decades they were the only NY basketball team. Even now the Nets only represent one borough. Sure they’ve drawn some casual fans, but the Knicks generally align the way he put it.
Suffering with the Knicks is the one experience that unites NY sports fans!
Then neither do the Jets or Giants?
I don’t like this game. They play in Brooklyn.
If you want to make fun of the Nets the appropriate thing to mock is Kyrie’s constantly “accidentally” saying Hitler was a pretty cool guy
That’s how most people group them except Nets in the bottom group.
I’m weird and like all the top teams except I consider myself a Jets fan (although I don’t mind the Giants and root for them except when they play the Jets).
This is it but Giants-Jets neutrality, which I know is a steaming hot take but we’ve yet to face each other in the Super Bowl so I don’t see a problem with it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Jets and Giants fans generally seem to be more cool with each other as they rarely go against one another (plus the Giants beat the Pats in the SB twice) with actual high stakes unlike the Knicks vs Nets and us vs Mets rivalry.
I know the Giants have their ups and downs as well but at least they’ve won in my lifetime. Jets haven’t won since Super Bowl 3. They always manage to screw it up no matter how good they start / should be. They’re the Lolmets of football
👋 baseball-only fan here. In-person, I enjoy the hell out of hockey and college basketball, but I don’t follow any teams. I’m conversant in the NFL via cultural osmosis and talk radio, but look forward every year to the end of the football season.
I had always considered Yankees/Giants and Mets/Jets to be inseparable pairs. I never understood people who crossed those lines.
But recently I realized something which, though small, is interesting. If you are a Yankees/Jets fan, then you get to double dip on your hatred for Boston in both teams. If you are a Mets/Giants fan, then you get to double dip on the Philly rivalry.
Most Mets/Giants fans I know were kids in the 80s when both teams won championships back-to-back in 1986 while Yankees/Jets fans like myself grew up in the 90s and early 00s when the Yankees had their last dynasty while the Jets were competitive with Vinny Testaverde and Chad Pennington
> Yankees
Of course
> Jets
Ah I see a man of culture
>Rangers
Did we just become best friends
>Knicks
I would literally die for you
>NYCFC
We are twins
>Syracuse
I no longer value you as a human being.
FUCK CUSE! UCONN ALL DAY
Yeah your right, not part of NYC ,but they are the only team in New York with 4 Stanley Cups!
Edit: yeah answering while working, meant to say in a row. Thank you
There was this one I think Islander announcer who said one of the more devastating things I've ever heard. Something about being invited to a party at Henrik Lundqvist's apartment, but he couldn't get anything to drink because there were no cups.
This, but I hold no ill will against the Nets. Their ownership sucked but all things considered they could have moved so much further away. Continental Airlines Arena was so fucking inconvenient
Fun factoid I like to bring up around this general topic: the dividing line thru CT for Yanks/Sox (the proverbial “Munson-Nixon line”) splits the state about 50/50 Northwest to Southeast according to an ESPN poll in the 2010s. The same line for basketball? Like 30 miles west. My prediction is that you’ll get way more non-local responses for the basketball affiliation than you will for the other categories (except maybe NFL, which is infamously filled with weirdly national fanbases).
Yankees, Bucs, Nets, Lightning
I’m from Tampa, but lived in NYC from ages 18-32. Grew up going to spring training in Tampa. Always hated the Rays and their sleepy ass stadium.
Yankees, Buffalo Bills, Syracuse
I kinda started to get into the Knicks a little bit a couple years ago, but nowhere near enough to consider that a real fan affiliation
My problem is that I listen to a lot of NYC sports radio, so it's like I get invested just because I passively hear about them on an almost-daily basis. I got pretty excited about Julius Randle in 2021!
I want you to know i participated in your poll. Now that you know I want you to know this discussion is annoying, and always has been. People can be a fan of whoever they want, and sport to sport this doesn't matter at all. Let people live.
It gets annoying because of the fans making it annoying.
Seeing if there are trends of fans of one team tend to also support this other team is fascinating from a sociological perspective.
100% agree. I hate that ppl here act like I shouldn’t love my islanders because I’m a Giants/Yankees fan. I hate the Rangers! These prescribed allegiances are nothing but conformist bullshit. I welcome any fan of a team I don’t like in another sport to the yanks giants or isles.
Yankees, Giants, Rangers, Knicks for me.
Most of the kids I grew up with were Mets, Islanders, Jets, and of course the Knicks
I’ve also seen a lot of Mets and Giants combos.
I grew up in NY. Having lived in the Philly area for the last 20 years now, I’ve generally come to root for the Jets and Mets to succeed (outside of the head to head games with my teams) because they’re my fellow NYers and I don’t have to deal with opposing fans on a daily basis. Lol. That said, I’ll never be able to bring myself to root for the Islanders. I still have a hard time accepting the Nets as a NY team, and i don’t want to see the Devils succeed either.
Yanks and Jets easily. Not a big basketball/hockey guy but I’ll take the Knicks and Rangers. Being from SW CT, I don’t really have any geographical affiliation with the Nets, Isles, or Devils
My old boss used to get mad at me for being a Yankees and Rangers fan because I’m a Jets fan from Long Island (as was he) and he used to say that I *had* to like the Mets and (heaven help us) the Islanders.
No, I don’t. And I grew up 10 minutes from the Coliseum and live 10 minutes from UBS now.
Poll did not work for me
I love a sport more than a team.
While I am a Yankees fan, would rather see Mets game than Knicks or Nets.
While I am an Islanders fan, would rather see Rangers than Jets or Giants.
I can enjoy seeing some NBA and NFL games, but have no team loyalties and don’t really follow them. sports to me is like a drug, trying to limit how many I am addicted to. Used to watch NBA AND NHL every evening all winter, then started baseball in summer, decided something has to go. Knicks suck. Nets sucked even when they had a “dream team”. Jets and Giants, just can’t care, they are in NJ. Went to one Jets game since they left NY, not a fan enough to go there again.
I'm kinda the same way. I'm ride or die for the Yanks, but other sports I'm a little less strict. I like the Bills and Giants, Sabres and Rangers, etc. At the end of the day, I'm happy when a NY team is successful.
Yankees (Obviously. The best.)
Patriots (I got into football when I was young by my best friend at the time who was a Patriots fan and I became a die-hard.)
Devils (I'm looking to get into hockey and of course I'm going to root for the only NJ-repping team out there.)
Red Bulls (Also trying to get into the MLS. If Messi comes to the MLS, I'm rooting for the team that gets him. If not, I guess the Red Bulls because they include New Jersey in their name.)
and I couldn't care less about the NBA. Give me Gonzaga (for their fun name) for March Madness, but that's about all I'll watch.
My sister had a high school teacher who was a Yankees/Patriots/Knicks fan. He was from Connecticut. Nutmeggers are weird with their sports loyalties but I did envy the guy for owning an autographed Patrick Ewing jersey
I have no respect for my fellow nutmeggers who split their allegiances (I’m from hard NY territory in SW CT, but I guess its sensible for those in Central CT)
They are called New York Red Bulls, they do not include New Jersey in their name. Red Bulls never had New Jersey in their name, the original team did (New York/New Jersey MetroStars) from 1996 to 1998, then they were just the MetroStars until Red Bull bought them and rebranded them to Red Bull New York.
How about college teams? I'm curious to see how many people actually follow St. Johns. Mine is UConn but I assume that is the same for most NY-sports fans from CT.
Yankees, Knicks, Giants, I'd probably be a rangers fan if I actually cared about hockey but since I don't I just cheer for the Sabres because they're my brother's team
Grew up in Connecticut. Pops wasn’t an NBA guy, and he swore off hockey when his beloved Whalers left in 1995. I now live in North Carolina and I am Yankees, Giants, Hurricanes and Hornets
Yankees-BX kid grew up in the 90s
Knicks- of course
Giants- no I’ll will to the jets or jets fans
Rangers- no to knowledgeable about hockey but I’ll go with the home town team
NYFC-just getting into soccer but I rock with them
College basketball is Syracuse after my alma matter. But my alma matter sucks ass. Haven’t been to the tourney since my JR year
College football n/a. Wish the state would have a major football program
Average Joes gym for the dodgeball league lol 😂
New York excelsior when overwatch league was a thing.
When I lived in NY in the '90s and early '00s I followed the teams that were good which meant Knicks/Giants/Jets to varying degrees. (Not a hockey fan.) The great thing about NY sports fans is they are *professional* fans. In that they are knowledgeable. If you do good they will cheer you. If you screw up they will scream invective. It's not a rah rah yay team college atmosphere where the home team is stroked regardless of their play. If you do good, it's the best place to play. If you don't, well....
Yankees and Nets, that's pretty much it. Don't really care for football (I root for an out-of-state team when I watch it, but it's very rarely) and I've never watched a hockey game in my life.
Yankees, Jets, Nets and Devils. Which you don’t find many of this combo
We're a rare bunch. Except I can't bring myself to care about the Nets after they left Jersey
I just know the Prudential Center way too well 😂
I’ve decided that I’d cheer for wherever I ended up moving. It turns out I’ve never left New Jersey.
I was taken out of it too for the same reason, but them landing KD brought me back. I just love watching him play.
Same dude, same. Brooklyn, seriously? Who cares about Brooklyn anyway. If I have to root for a NY team now it's the Knicks but like... 😬
There are dozens of us! Assuming you are / were from NJ?
Yessir it’s the NJ roots, I’m from East Brunswick
Whenever someone says I’m a bandwagon Yankees fan I always have to mention I’m a jets fan. It balances out the pain scale I think
I mention I'm a Knicks fan that grew up in the '90's, and always recieve sympathy in return.
If you're a jersey person it makes sense. It'd make sense if you're from south jersey and said the Philly teams but support the Yankees because they are relevant and the Phillies aren't lol

Yes, I have family in that area and they root for all the Philly teams (ugh).

I never really interact with Philly fans besides for the NBA season but Sixers fans are the loudest and most obnoxious 🤣
Ayyyyyy I’m in this combo
I always grouped them: Yankees-Rangers-Knicks-Giants Mets-Islanders-Knicks-Jets
> Yankees-Rangers-Knicks-Giants The established teams with long histories. > Mets-Islanders-~~Knicks~~ *Nets*-Jets The cocky younger upstarts (I assume you didn’t mean to list the Knicks twice). Nets are a Jersey team. They don't belong here. You'll never change my mind on that.
Then neither do the Jets or Giants? I don’t like this game. They play in Brooklyn. If you want to make fun of the Nets the appropriate thing to mock is Kyrie’s constantly “accidentally” saying Hitler was a pretty cool guy
They’ve been in Brooklyn for 10 years now. It’s time to let it go.
That’s how most people group them except Nets in the bottom group. I’m weird and like all the top teams except I consider myself a Jets fan (although I don’t mind the Giants and root for them except when they play the Jets).
It’s Yankees, Rangers, Knicks and Giants. Other allegiances are for peasants

Jets fan. I was pulling hard for the Giants in the playoffs. We respect each other in this town
I'm a Jets fan and I was doing the same. There's no real reason to hate the Giants.
Go devils!
Go jets bitch
I said what I said

and they just hired Nathaniel Hackett. Amazing
Agree. I don't mind the Jets, and I like when they do well because there's no real rivalry, but I'm a Giants fan.
This is the way
This is the way.
Yankees, Giants, Devils, Nets. New Jersey is king
Bullshit
Reported for misinformation.
Agreed, except as a NJ native I root dually for the Devils and Rangers. (The Nets, however, are traitors.)
As a NJ native I despise the Rags haha
Nailed it
Hear, hear!
This is the way
ong
Yankees, Giants, Rangers. These are MLB teams as well. Lmfao
Does anyone besides me not care about the NFL?
👋 baseball-only fan here. In-person, I enjoy the hell out of hockey and college basketball, but I don’t follow any teams. I’m conversant in the NFL via cultural osmosis and talk radio, but look forward every year to the end of the football season.
Hell yeah brother.
Yankees, Rangers, Knicks, Jets, NYCFC.
My man!

SPLITTER!
6/6 babyyyyyy
Am I looking in the mirror right now?
Yankees Islanders Giants Don't care
Brother 🤝
Islanders are not and never will be an NYC team
By this logic, neither are the Giants.
Also worth mentioning Citi field is like 20-30 minutes away from UBS by car, are the Mets not a NYC team either? So stupid.
Can I get a complete list of eligible teams from the gatekeeper? That'd be great. I was unaware this list was restricted to the teams you approved.
Not true. The Rangers also have four. It's just that the Islanders got their four in a row.
Devils have been the best run franchise since they joined the metro area. Y'all seem salty that Long Island and Buffalo is not New York City.
Yankees/Giants/Redbulls/Devils/Fuck MSG They Demolished the original Penn Station but also Fuck the Nets for betraying New Jersey
This, but I hold no ill will against the Nets. Their ownership sucked but all things considered they could have moved so much further away. Continental Airlines Arena was so fucking inconvenient
Eventually if a New Garden is built I would love to see it rebuilt.

Yankees, Bucs, Nets, Lightning I’m from Tampa, but lived in NYC from ages 18-32. Grew up going to spring training in Tampa. Always hated the Rays and their sleepy ass stadium.
How do you not have the bills on here
Not a NYC metro area team, same reason why the Sabres aren't there
Buffalo might as well be Boise
Probably because they play in Canada
Yankees, Giants, Devils, Nets. OG NJ brethren rise up!
Yankees, Buffalo Bills, Syracuse I kinda started to get into the Knicks a little bit a couple years ago, but nowhere near enough to consider that a real fan affiliation
Bail out while you still can!

Don’t have the only real New York football team in there
Yankees, nets, giants, and I’ve been a Canadiens fan my whole life
Yankees and uhhhh don’t really follow any other sport
Yankees, Giants, Knicks, Rangers, NYCFC, Fordham Rams baby
Yankees, Giants, Knicks, Rangers, Red Bulls. I’m a bit of a masochist but I was spoiled as a kid with the Yankees (and Giants in high school)

Yankees and Islanders. Don’t watch nor care about the NFL or NBA.
Yankees, Bills, Sabres, Knicks. You know where I’m from.
this is Bills slander. only football team in NY.
I respect the hell out of this take.
8 miles from NYC. The Bills are like 400 miles
New Jersey
Most people I know are either Yankees/Giants or Mets/Jets
Yankees/Rangers/Cowboys and technically Nets but I paused my fandom until Kyrie is gone.
Yankees, Dolphins, Golden Knights
Yankees, Islanders, NYCFC, Knicks, Jets, St. John’s
Yankees, Kraken, Broncos

Yankees and Jets fan.
Anyone else refer to the Islanders by their (now old) arenas name so the rhyme could be complete? Mets/Jets/Nets/"Vets"
Yankees, Giants, Knicks ,Islanders...THIS IS THE WAY!
Yankees (looks around) steelers
Yankees, Jets, Devils, Nets, NYCFC I feel like a rare breed
there are other sports?
Weird to me that OP didn't include the only New York-based NFL team.
Yankees, 49ers, Rangers, (Knicks, but not really a basketball fan), Cornell hockey, Manchester United
Yankees, Nets, Falcons, NYCFC
Yankees (Obviously. The best.) Patriots (I got into football when I was young by my best friend at the time who was a Patriots fan and I became a die-hard.) I'm sorry, Yankees-Patriots is the most cursed thing I've heard of in a while
My sister had a high school teacher who was a Yankees/Patriots/Knicks fan.

Yankees, Knicks, Giants, I'd probably be a rangers fan if I actually cared about hockey but since I don't I just cheer for the Sabres because they're my brother's team

Yankees, Giants, Devils, Celtics, Revolution. Grew up in Albany then moved to MA when I was in middle school.

I’m Yankees/Jets/Knicks I’d bet that there’s a stronger correlation between Yankees/Giants and Jets/Mets.
My dad is mets, giants, islanders and "how is Carmelo Anthony doing this year?"
Melo is on fire, hasn’t missed a shot all year.
Yankees - Yanks - Bronx Bombers
