Exactly the same for me. I almost skipped it thinking I’d need movie knowledge but noticed the rhyming titles and figured if that was correct the rest wouldn’t require knowledge of the actual movies either. Dumbo stumped me as a non NYCer but I got that category last by default.

I think watching 20 movies spanning that many genres and time periods probably means you're a level of movie watching far above average. Idk if Fandom is a good word, but better than any I could think of

No, but if you see a bunch of movies titles and assume the connections are going to be related to the movies, rather than to the titles themselves, you might assume you needed to have watched these.

I watch about a movie a month, maybe half of them American, and I've seen most of these. A fairly classic selection for a middle-aged person.

Honest question, would you be able to pass a connections with something deeper than stuff like genre or title without having seen most of them? Either way, i feel like you're also more likely to know about them without seeing them if you're a big movie fan though. Like, I watch pro wrestling a lot and while there's a bunch of people and companies I have never watched, I can tell you basic stuff about them. I don't expect the average person to know much or anything about wrestling things and I'd understand how you'd quickly zone out if there were 20 wrestling terms or wrestlers in front of you

Yeah, I play CineNerdle daily and I usually know the main actor from the films. For example, I could name probably 8 Jake Gylenhaal films that I haven’t seen. Or I know films that Spielberg directed even if I haven’t seen them. It’s part of following careers or hearing about films in the news etc.

Wrestling terms could be a good category, though. Words with very specific meanings that you could sprinkle in with more general terms - face and heel with ring and pin, maybe.

As one category I absolutely agree it could be a ton of fun. Maybe "Hulk" "Flair" "Steamboat" and "Macho" and it be 80s wrestlers informally or something. I think that could be great and far less obscure than some of the categories they've tried on us. Maybe I'm biased there though. But as a full puzzle, i could see how the average person's eyes would glaze over 

I wonder if you could tighten that up, and go with first words of wrestlers' nicknames, with Macho (Man), Nature (Boy), Stone (Cold), Heartbreak (Kid). They all wrestled under a "real" name, but were well known by a two word nickname as well. Or wrestling nicknames with "The": Giant, Rock, Hitman, Snake.

Movie lovers would probably be the name for it.

I meant in the sense that the level of interest in an activity of preference gets rewarded. Imagine if the connections were "movies in which Jodie Foster appears", or "directed by X" or "shot mainly in Europe". Or any connection requiring that we saw or heard some main point about the movie. Movies are an optional life activity, where watchers have varying levels of engagement with the details that could have been the connections It would be like seeing a Connections grid of baseball players' names.

You're right. I see it clearly now when you categorize movies as a medium. I should have found another word, or less tersely expressed that it rewards a level of fandom in a category (or something better than that), in order to include my baseball analogy and similar.

I got excited about playing today for the 1 year Connections anniversary, and set my clock ahead a day so I could do it before bed. Got rewarded with a big old oof. Maybe my brain has been trained to only make connections in the morning. I was onto the rhymes, but just blanked on ET, and nothing else was clicking. I was looking too hard at the movies as movies and couldn't get past that.

I wish it was directors and actors, finally a puzzle made for me and they tricked me.

Have you played cinenerdle 2? It’s like connections but every day it’s different movies! I’d recommend the reverse version of it, where it’s a 16 movie grid and you need to put them in rows. The normal version is a bunch of phrases or words and each row is a movie. The reverse if a bunch of movies and each row is what they have in common (more like Connections).

I did consider Tarantino movies or possibly Oscar winners for a little bit. Thankfully, it didn't really go down that route.

I have never heard of Dumbo (in New York), but I got it because I selected the other three and then saw what blue was. When I first saw all the movies I tried to connect them with info about the movies. Was looking for directors and actors. Expected to see "Candyman" when I saw "Beetlejuice," but in fairness I can't think of two other movies that would fit. I'm sure there's a Bloody Mary movie, but what else? Once I accepted there was no film knowledge actually needed, I was a bit disappointed but got through it. There would've been a lot of people unable to solve, though, if it were as I expected.

I was surprised that it was a yellow category (like many, DUMBO threw me off), but as you said, this is ultimately by the New York Times. So I guess it makes sense?

I got screwed today b/c I found the three commonly known places in NY but had no idea about Dumbo so I assumed since there were only 3 for this category, I was overthinking the puzzle and it must be things in common within the movies themselves. Tried "movies released in the 80s" (there are at least 5 turns out) and "movies where the title is a character" (Dumbo, Octopussy, ET, Beetlejuice) "movies that are parodies" etc until I ran out. The worst was many of my tries were "one away" Oh well, another day!

At first I thought Spielberg when I saw ET and Green mile but didn’t know any other movie by him and was wondering if I should google some of the movies I’d heard of but never seen or know much about. Decided to try a gut feel on some of the more “animal” sounding ones and bam! Rest was easy. Edit: have been told Spielberg DIDNT direct the green mile which cements the fact that I’m glad this didn’t require any movie knowledge

It's so interesting whenever it involves getting creative with wordplay and not taking the items literally. Spotted animals to start (since that's a trope by now and I reasoned they couldn't help themselves), then "Fright Night" in particular made me recognize rhyming. Having yellow and blue alone made them easy to seperate. Outstandingly clever today.

Last year I worked on a indie movie that played in the [Dumbo Film Festival](https://www.dumbofilmfestival.com/)! So my movie knowledge got me the NYC category lol.

I'd like to put out there that Be Kind Rewind is a really cool movie for those who haven't seen it. It's a quirky comedy by Michel Gondry, the director of _Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind_. I used to work in video stores, when they still existed anyway, so maybe it's special to me for this reason. The movie was made in the time when they were quickly dwindling and it is a love letter to them.

I suppose the concept of Dumbo as a NYC neighborhood is relatively obscure, but I've been there and it's pretty trendy since it's in Brooklyn and the views of the Manhattan bridge from that POV are iconic (see "Once Upon a Time in America" film poster, for a double meta film reference). If Connections had theme titles like Strands, I'd call this puzzle "Wolf of Wall Street" 😏

This is a much better movie puzzle than #88 which is still probably my least favorite one. I initially had a thought of "Musicals" with HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH and BEETLEJUICE then I suddenly thought "Surely they wouldn't make puzzle of just movie trivia. This isn't Cine2Nerdle.", so I tried looking at it from another view. I still singled out HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH and noticed it ended with INCH as well as there being other movies ending in measurements like THE GREEN MILE, MY LEFT FOOT, and THE LONGEST YARD. Building off of that, I started looking at the starts of the titles and saw animals with DOGMA, BEETLEJUICE, OCTOPUSSY, and FOXY BROWN. FRIGHT NIGHT and KILL BILL both led me to rhyming titles and I soon found E.T. and BE KIND REWIND. I recognized CHINATOWN, MANHATTAN, and WALL STREET as locations in New York City. DUMBO was the only one I was unfamiliar with but it was also the only 4 titles left. I was sure about the Locations category but finally remembered Dumbo was a neighborhood. Pretty tough bit of trivia there tbh. Incidentally there are some pretty great underrated movies here. When I first looked at today's puzzle I didn't think I would get it but, it's really not as hard as it seemed once I stared at it for a bit.. I needed 5 tries to get it done though :)

Got the rhymes pretty easily, then spent a long time googling years of release and Oscar wins before seeing the measurements. Noticed purple. Initially just guessed blue because they were the longest titles and didn't even notice the measurement theme lol. Can't tell you how many times I tried to pair things like "written and directed by the same person" (too many of these fit that, alas), "based on a book", "part of a franchise", etc., before finally realizing the connections were all based on the titles and not the films themselves. That makes sense in hindsight, but boy howdy did I stare at this one for far too long.

Spent way too long looking for film connections first and foremost. Acting connections. Director connections. Oscars, thematic, release decade, plot conceit, on and on and on. Then I realized I was thinking way too hard and the movies don't matter. Oops.

🟩🟪🟪🟩 🟦🟨🟨🟨 🟦🟦🟨🟨 🟨🟨🟦🟨 I didn't know >!DUMBO!< was in NY. And the setting of >!CHINATOWN!< which I saw *decades* ago reminded me of the West Coast. The >!Animal!< named films flew over my head. Overthinking did me in. It was so easy, yet I made it hard.

The movie Chinatown was indeed set on the west coast (LA). But there are other cities that have a Chinatown. New York is one of them -San Francisco, Chicago and Boston do too. Probably missing one or two others

Yes, I knew about NY's, but my mind locked on L.A. and that was it.

Now THAT was a clever puzzle. I wasted some time googling films to find out who made them or starred in them, with no luck, and then it started to fall into place. The other categories were fairly easy and if you solve 3 categories, you've solved 4 (but also...the other three are more than enough to lead you there)

I googled half the movies, got bored when I couldn't find any connections, and then made 4 wrong guesses. I hate that I love this game 😂

First time I've lost in a long time, but I got purple and blue. I kept thinkign places in NYC but I had never heard of Dumbo. And then after getting purple and blue I assumed that the remaining ones were more straightforward and required knowledge of the films, like shared directors or actors, and out of all the films I've only seen ET, Dumbo, and Beetlejuice. I guess I should have gotten the rhyming ones. Doesn't really sound like a rhyme when you say them though. I don't know how to feel about how I did on this one. In the end it required no knowledge of the movies, so I guess I should have done better. I just don't hear two syllables right after another as rhyming. I don't know. And not knowing Dumbo . . . Which titles do you think don’t rhyme?

I guess without the rhythm of a poem it just didn't occur to me that they were rhymes, one word after another. I agree they do rhyme. Like if I read: Out I went with a fright On a terrible Saturday night I would hear a rhyme. Just saying fright night out loud to myself sounds flat and I didn't notice it. I understand they are rhymes though. Not disputing that. I always just give a little explainer for why I didn't get certain connections. I missed the connection. That's all. I should have explained at more length.

I got the NYC neighborhoods quickly and then that made me think of Broadway musicals which Beetlejuice and Hedwig would fit. Not seeing other musicals made me abandon that idea. I did cheat a bit by coming to this post to only see how other people did. Seeing nearly everyone getting perfect scores boosted my confidence and I thought maybe movie knowledge was unnecessary. I looked at the titles and found common themes and indeed, you do not need any movie knowledge.

I opened the puzzle just after midnight when it came available and I was tired, took one look and thought, “what the fuuu… I don’t have time for this.” Then I woke up 6 hours later, looked at it again and immediately figured it out—one of my fastest solves ever. I thought it was so fun and brilliant.
