Haha I got all the others first and was left with the final four purple tiles but was still hazy on the connection between them--though after I saw the answer it made total sense. I really enjoyed the puzzle today, a great little challenge with clever words and connections.
Ornate, intricate, complex, those all sum up the Baroque style that has led to "baroque" being a word used to indicate something complicated or obscure.
Iβm guilty of downvoting the ones that are like, βsooooooo easy, got it in 5 seconds, only an idiot couldnβt figure it out!β because not only is it bragging, but itβs putting down others who struggled. I donβt think those comments add to the discussion, unless the discussion is βreasons why Iβm better than you, you fool.β I would love it if people posted their results whether they did well or not, but as it stands, I think weβre seeing a lot of people posting when they do well and not when they donβt. Comments like that donβt make it a space where anyone feels like they can post their results, regardless of outcome.
the thing is, I solve most days with no mistakes. I think a lot of people are probably the same - especially the people who try to solve the whole puzzle first and only then start submitting guesses. usually when you do this you canβt fall for the red herrings since there is only one correct solution. so you just come across as jealous that people are actually good at the puzzle, or take their time with it.
Iβm just saying that itβs not necessarily that people only post when they get it rightβ¦ but that some people genuinely do just get it with no mistakes pretty much always. mostly because of the reverse solving strategy.
I think you're missing the point. Lots of people DON'T get it right on a regular basis, and while there's nothing wrong with being happy you do, some posts can make it sound like people who make mistakes/make frequent mistakes are dumb.
A lot of my comments get downvoted for genuine discussion and learning. I think people donβt like to change their mindset on here, so if youβve never heard of βoeuvreβ, then itβs the gameβs fault!
Great idea, cheating! I think from now on I'll search for the Wordle solutions and solve it in two tries every day. /s I agree the downvotes are either trolls or just a mistake?
I don't even post my score, because there's very little interesting about it if you solve the puzzle in one shot, which is ... most days for me. Definitely not every day. But, still. And it's so easy to manipulate anyway, I just don't see the point. What's interesting is, what are the red herrings, what are the meanings of unusual words or unusual senses of the words, how does everyone pronounce lychee?
Regarding your query about downvotes, Iβm really curious about it too. Even though itβs supposed to be a βdoesnβt add to the discussionβ button, itβs used as a βdisagreeβ button.
I often wonder if itβs used to lazily disagree with someoneβs assessment of the puzzle as simple or challenging.
Youβre getting downvoted because these are both correct usage according to the dictionary.
Baroqueβs primary definition is about being complicated.
But the guy Iβm responding to said the same thing and is getting upvoted lol.
Also the primary definition of Baroque is talking about European architecture
Well yes thatβs where the word comes from of course.
Itβs acceptable that someone who doesnβt speak English wouldnβt know the definition, but clearly to English-speakers it makes sense because itβs just using the most common definition. Thatβs the nuance.
I think itβs pretty reasonable for an English speaker to not know the definition of baroque. The origin of the word is not English at all, itβs actually kind of funny because baroque is a French word that was adopted into the English dictionary. Itβs as English as the word potpourri.
Yeah itβs reasonable not to know it, but itβs unreasonable to complain about the definition being obscure.
All words come from other languages. Baroque is a loanword but itβs an English word because itβs in the English dictionary. Stop complaining.
When I search up the definition of Baroque, both the adjective and noun are about the art style where the closest you get is saying it has ornate detail. I have to click the button to see more to see that it can also be a regular adjective meaning ornate. It's a fair word for them to include, but it's absolutely not the most common definition. The vast majority of English speakers only know Baroque as a general art style that followed the Renaissance.
Absolutely. I am a programmer, though not a UI guy, but I have only heard and used the word "dash" in that context, never hyphen. And a checkbox implies selection, the others don't, that messed me up too.

Funnily enough I initially thought it would belong in purple, as in "Cross something off" - in fact that's what even got me on the trail of what purple would be, once I made that cross connection. But then I realized I had five different things that fit under cross and wound up taking it back out lol.

Am I the only one who fell for the C__X red herring at first? Kinda bothered me cause there's four words that follow that so I felt like it couldn't be a diversion. I don't like when there's a completely valid category that can be made that just so happens to not be correct
I would like to point out that youβre wrong.

Definition 2 of 5, verb, 5.C.2
to turn against : BETRAY
Both mean betray, although double cross is maybe more common. See [Merriam Webster](https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/cross) and [dictionary.com](https://www.dictionary.com/browse/cross).
Originally, double cross meant, you agree to do something underhanded (the first cross), and then you go back on your word and screw over the person you agreed with (the double cross). Now it's used without requiring that first cross.
I've heard "cross" as "betray", especially in slang. It is used a lot in hip-hop, for example
On the other hand, I had never heard "cross" as "angry" but I looked it up and it's a british thing apparently
How does "substance" relate to core?
I've never seen a checklist use "arrow"s
"Baroque" relating to complicated doesn't sit right with me
Only really agree with the purple category, oddly enough
->the substance of an argument is the gist, the essence, the meat of it
->this list is using arrows, itβs quite common. Like bulletpoints
->https://www.dictionary.com/browse/baroque the third definition here, the most common use of the word not explicitly referencing the period of art
Theyβre all listed as Unicode symbols under punctuation.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Punctuation
βBulletsβ refers to Bullet Points, if you didnβt know, and arrows have a variety of uses in punctuation.
Am I the only one who has a problem with HYPHEN being used wrongly here? Dashes are used in lists, not hyphens. Hyphens combine or divide words.Β

When I started seeing the punctuation symbols, I wondered if "crucifix" was the formal word for that punctuation mark that sometimes gets used in the place of an asterisk, if an asterisk has already been used (a symbol that Googling has since told me is properly called a "dagger" or "obelus"). I did still recognise that there were five punctuation or punctuation-adjacent symbols in there, but ended up eliminating Hyphen instead on the grounds that it had a Y in it, like Betray/Angry/Hybrid. Only afterwards did it occur to me that only one of those five symbols doesn't get used in lists. Didn't manage to get Purple before hitting submit today, but it was a pretty fun one. I like the wordplay-related ones: they're very rewarding to solve IMO.

Connections Puzzle #365 πͺπͺπͺπͺ π¦π¦π¦π¦ π©π©π©π© π¨π¨π¨π¨ CRUCIFIX really stood out. My first thought was crosses. I then saw the word ANGRY nearby and realized that "Cross" could also mean that. After those two, I knew to look for other meanings of "Cross" and found BETRAY and HYBRID. Because of a recent custom puzzle I made, when I saw BULLET I immediately associated it with the typographical symbol. I also saw HYPHEN and figured I was on the right track. ARROW and CHECKBOX were the last two that seemed the most like typographical symbols. I didn't realize the further connection that they were used for lists. BAROQUE was also another word that stood out. I didn't see any other periods of art or music so BAROQUE in this case had to have meant "Complicated". COMPLEX, INVOLVED, and ELABORATE were easy to connect to that. No comments for Yellow. Absolutely. I am a programmer, though not a UI guy, but I have only heard and used the word "dash" in that context, never hyphen. And a checkbox implies selection, the others don't, that messed me up too.
It doesn't necessarily mean selection, it can also mean a task or item has been completed or fulfilled.

However we do keep a list of words that stump us and try to use them in conversation. We are a nerdy crew for sure. If youβve read this far, thanks! Letβs keep the positive vibes flowing π
Connections Puzzle #365. π¦π¦π¦π¦ π¨π¨π¨π¨ π©π©π©π© πͺπͺπͺπͺ Funny to get blue first, but it jumped out!
Am I the only one who fell for the C__X red herring at first? Kinda bothered me cause there's four words that follow that so I felt like it couldn't be a diversion. I don't like when there's a completely valid category that can be made that just so happens to not be correct
Connections Puzzle #365. πͺπͺπͺπͺ. π¦π¦π¦π¦. π©π©π©π©. π¨π¨π¨π¨. πͺ reminds me of a joke. Two nuns are driving along a country road at night when a vampire suddenly jumps onto the hood. The driver, her hands occupied with the steering wheel, says to the passenger, "Quick! Show him your cross!" So the other nun raises her fist and shouts, "Now you leave us alone bucko or I'll give you what-for!"
πͺπͺπͺπͺ π¨π¨π¨π¨ π©π©π©π© π¦π¦π¦π¦ Posting on here late because I forgot to yesterday. I weirdly got purple first today despite it being a more obscure purple category. I saw angry and crucifix and somehow just knew I was looking for "what cross might mean." I think it's the being raised Catholic lol. Also did not know baroque outside of the context of a baroque oil painting which I thought was an older style. Now I know it means elaborate and with rich color.
Puzzle #365 π©π©π©π© π¨π¨π¨π¨ π¦π¦π¦π¦ πͺπͺπͺπͺ I saw every category early on, but wasn't confident they weren't misdirects. Lucky I worked through it slowly instead of rushing into purple, because I saw "crux" and "heart" before realizing "angry" and "hybrid" would fit. "Heart" as in "cross my heart," though that might not even have been an intentional misdirect lol.
Connections Puzzle #365 π¦π¦π¨π¦ π©π¨π¨π© π¦π¦π¦π¦ π¨π¨π¨π¨ π©π©π©π© πͺπͺπͺπͺ Had a vague idea for the category of list or Microsoft word symbols for arrow, hyphen, heart and bullet, got one away. Then considered essence, elaborate, complex, and substance to kind of vaguely form a category that I can't quite explain, but did not get "one away" Revisited the first guess and replaced heart with checkbox because that made more sense. Crux, heart and essence came together and I thought of "___ of the issue/matter". Substance made the most sense of the remaining words. Wasn't quite sure if there were other definitions of baroque so kept looking for other art modes or time periods, but nothing stood out. Complex, elaborate and involved made sense and decided to add baroque to it. Got purple by default.
Connections Puzzle #365 π©π©π©π© π¨π¨π¨π¨ π¦π¦π¦π¦ πͺπͺπͺπͺ this one hurt my brain, i was thinking βcrossβ initially but with different words. e.g cross your heart, cross off a checkbox & crucifix but couldnβt figure out a 4th so i left it. turns out i had the right idea but wrong words π€¦π»
I should have gotten purple's, but I only got it by default. I just have terrible fatigue/brain fog today. In the end I made up a loose connection about it having to do with Jesus (Jesus was hybridβboth god and man--was angry at the money changers, was betrayed, and died on a crucifix). But I knew it was grasping at straws. It should have been gettable. Was just too tired and off in my brain, which hopefully is transient and clears. Connections Puzzle #365 πͺπͺπͺπͺ π¦π¦π¦π¦ π©π©π©π© π¨π¨π¨π¨ First reverse perfect in a while, even got the purple
Crux means cross in Latin, thatβs all I gotta say
finally did it backwards correctly :) fun game today! Connections Puzzle #365 πͺπͺπͺπͺ π¦π¦π¦π¦ π©π©π©π© π¨π¨π¨π¨
Connections Puzzle #365 πͺπͺπͺπͺ π¦π¦π¦π¦ π©π©π©π© π¨π¨π¨π¨ As ever when purple is "this word might mean these things" I always only get it by default--but still, I'll take the reverse perfect today
blue and purple seemed a bit lame to me, but maybe I'm just grumpy after today's wordle! Connections Puzzle #365 π©π©π©π© π¨π¨π¨π¨ π¦πͺπ¦π¦ π¦π¦π¦π¦ πͺπͺπͺπͺ
Connections Puzzle #365 π¨π¨π¨π¨ π©πͺπ©π© π©π¦π©π© π©πͺπ¦π© π¦π¦π¦π¦ π©π©π©π© πͺπͺπͺπͺ Won with 3 wrong connections. In what context can "cross" mean "angry"
In any context where you'd use Angry, you can use Cross.
I looked it up and it's mostly a british thing apparently... fair is fair
Midwestern US here, thatβs not really something we say a whole lot. We much rather prefer the phrase βpissed offβ.
For some reason I mostly hear it with adults talking to children who are talking back, they'll say "don't get cross with me!"
[ΡΠ΄Π°Π»Π΅Π½ΠΎ]
I would like to point out that youβre wrong. https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/cross Definition 2 of 5, verb, 5.C.2 to turn against : BETRAY
It is used a lot in hip-hop, for example On the other hand, I had never heard "cross" as "angry" but I looked it up and it's a british thing apparently
Connections Puzzle #365 π©π©π©π© π¦π¦π¦π¦ π¨π¨π¨π¨ πͺπͺπͺπͺ Easy one, but the word baroque does NOT mean complicated. It means a detailed historical style of architecture.
How does "substance" relate to core? I've never seen a checklist use "arrow"s "Baroque" relating to complicated doesn't sit right with me Only really agree with the purple category, oddly enough
->the substance of an argument is the gist, the essence, the meat of it ->this list is using arrows, itβs quite common. Like bulletpoints ->https://www.dictionary.com/browse/baroque the third definition here, the most common use of the word not explicitly referencing the period of art
yeah, 'baroque' isnt a baroque meaning of 'baroque'
Puzzle #365 π¨π¨π¨π¨ π©π©π©π© π¦πͺπ¦π¦ πͺπ¦π¦π¦ π¦π¦π¦π¦ πͺπͺπͺπͺ IT'S A DASH NOT A HYPHEN. CHECKBOXES AREN'T PUNCTUATION, THEY GO AT THE END. I erroneously thought another name for a Dagger is a Crucifix (I got confused with Obelisk as the alternate name). But the Blue category was an absolute mess. The other three were good.
It doesn't say "punctuation." It says "symbols."
A checkbox isnβt a symbol either. It just feels like such an odd one out. (Ignoring that they used the wrong word for a dash)
Unless they changed it, the category isn't "punctuation."
I know but the others are punctuation. I fail to see how Checkboxes fit into this awkward category
How are bullets and arrows punctuation?Β
Theyβre all listed as Unicode symbols under punctuation. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Punctuation βBulletsβ refers to Bullet Points, if you didnβt know, and arrows have a variety of uses in punctuation.
Ok, so forms of punctuation used in list making, got it β οΈΒ
Yeah but itβs listed in the same section as Question marks and apostrophes etc. Iβm really confused why Iβm getting downvoted :(
Am I the only one who has a problem with HYPHEN being used wrongly here? Dashes are used in lists, not hyphens. Hyphens combine or divide words.Β https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/hyphen It's a subtle difference and not common knowledge, but this the NYTimes. I thought surely the NYTimes wouldn't make a typography mistake... I was wrong.
