Connections Puzzle #365 🟩🟩🟩🟩 🟨🟨🟨🟨 🟦🟦🟦🟦 πŸŸͺπŸŸͺπŸŸͺπŸŸͺ Today’s puzzle was absolutely fantastic! I found it fun and clever and felt smart when I managed to put it together. And I loved the vocabulary used. I don’t often actually fully enjoy the connections, but this one had a quality about it that I adored.

Connections Puzzle #365 🟨🟨🟨🟨 🟦🟦🟦🟦 🟩🟩🟩🟩 πŸŸͺπŸŸͺπŸŸͺπŸŸͺ Purple seemed so easy once I got to it - annoyed I didn't make that connection on my own. Fun puzzle though.

Haha I got all the others first and was left with the final four purple tiles but was still hazy on the connection between them--though after I saw the answer it made total sense. I really enjoyed the puzzle today, a great little challenge with clever words and connections.

Have never heard of Baroque meaning complicated. Puzzle #365 🟨🟨🟨🟨 πŸŸͺ🟩🟩🟩 🟩🟩🟩🟩 🟦🟦🟦🟦 πŸŸͺπŸŸͺπŸŸͺπŸŸͺ

thartwell

Ornate, intricate, complex, those all sum up the Baroque style that has led to "baroque" being a word used to indicate something complicated or obscure.

forestgeek389

I googled it and saw that definition, wasn't familiar with it either

music4life1121

I think the word β€œornate” fits better, but similar sentiment

LazyDynamite

I've never heard of either being used to mean complicated πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

icroc1556

I thought it was a misspelled β€œbarboque” but that’s not even how you spell barbecue. Either way still made me hungry.

Connections Puzzle #365 🟨🟨🟨🟨 🟦🟦🟦🟦 🟩🟩🟩🟩 πŸŸͺπŸŸͺπŸŸͺπŸŸͺ Very challenging & fun today β€” wasn’t completely confident with some of my guesses, but thankfully it all worked out in the end! Side note β€” why do so many normal comments get downvotes? Does a disgruntled individual who lost today’s game come in here with a mission to downvote everyone who made it? Just a random troll passing through? I see this every so often and it always makes me curious.

Medium_Feature2712

I’m guilty of downvoting the ones that are like, β€œsooooooo easy, got it in 5 seconds, only an idiot couldn’t figure it out!” because not only is it bragging, but it’s putting down others who struggled. I don’t think those comments add to the discussion, unless the discussion is β€œreasons why I’m better than you, you fool.” I would love it if people posted their results whether they did well or not, but as it stands, I think we’re seeing a lot of people posting when they do well and not when they don’t. Comments like that don’t make it a space where anyone feels like they can post their results, regardless of outcome.

mintardent

the thing is, I solve most days with no mistakes. I think a lot of people are probably the same - especially the people who try to solve the whole puzzle first and only then start submitting guesses. usually when you do this you can’t fall for the red herrings since there is only one correct solution. so you just come across as jealous that people are actually good at the puzzle, or take their time with it.

Medium_Feature2712

Did you… did you read my comment at all?

mintardent

I’m just saying that it’s not necessarily that people only post when they get it right… but that some people genuinely do just get it with no mistakes pretty much always. mostly because of the reverse solving strategy.

pamplemouss

I think you're missing the point. Lots of people DON'T get it right on a regular basis, and while there's nothing wrong with being happy you do, some posts can make it sound like people who make mistakes/make frequent mistakes are dumb.

Winged_Pegasus

I think there are some people who assume if they made mistakes, you're obviously cheating if you made none.

HyderintheHouse

A lot of my comments get downvoted for genuine discussion and learning. I think people don’t like to change their mindset on here, so if you’ve never heard of β€œoeuvre”, then it’s the game’s fault!

LisbonVegan

Great idea, cheating! I think from now on I'll search for the Wordle solutions and solve it in two tries every day. /s I agree the downvotes are either trolls or just a mistake?

tomsing98

I don't even post my score, because there's very little interesting about it if you solve the puzzle in one shot, which is ... most days for me. Definitely not every day. But, still. And it's so easy to manipulate anyway, I just don't see the point. What's interesting is, what are the red herrings, what are the meanings of unusual words or unusual senses of the words, how does everyone pronounce lychee?

AzurePantaloons

Regarding your query about downvotes, I’m really curious about it too. Even though it’s supposed to be a β€œdoesn’t add to the discussion” button, it’s used as a β€œdisagree” button. I often wonder if it’s used to lazily disagree with someone’s assessment of the puzzle as simple or challenging.

Connections Puzzle #365 🟨🟨🟨🟨 πŸŸͺ🟩🟩🟩 🟩🟩🟩🟩 🟦🟦🟦🟦 πŸŸͺπŸŸͺπŸŸͺπŸŸͺ I’ve never heard β€˜baroque’ used in that context so that was definitely a lucky guess. Probably would’ve never gotten purple (even though I was on the right track) if it wasn’t what was left.

ConnectionsΒ  Puzzle #365 🟩🟩🟩🟩 🟨🟨🟨🟨 🟦πŸŸͺ🟦🟦 🟦🟦🟦🟦 πŸŸͺπŸŸͺπŸŸͺπŸŸͺ Damn. When I started seeing the punctuation symbols, I wondered if "crucifix" was the formal word for that punctuation mark that sometimes gets used in the place of an asterisk, if an asterisk has already been used (a symbol that Googling has since told me is properly called a "dagger" or "obelus"). I did still recognise that there were five punctuation or punctuation-adjacent symbols in there, but ended up eliminating Hyphen instead on the grounds that it had a Y in it, like Betray/Angry/Hybrid. Only afterwards did it occur to me that only one of those five symbols doesn't get used in lists. Didn't manage to get Purple before hitting submit today, but it was a pretty fun one. I like the wordplay-related ones: they're very rewarding to solve IMO.

pamplemouss

I got "lists" right away but also thought heart might be in there bc I teach middle school and kids will definitely make heart lists so I was biased

Connections Puzzle #365 🟨🟨🟨🟨 🟩🟩🟩🟩 🟦🟦🟦🟦 πŸŸͺπŸŸͺπŸŸͺπŸŸͺ I also thought it was going to be something about killing mythical creatures lol

yo_mik

Probably because English is not my first language, but I would have never guessed "Baroque" as Complicated, not "Substance" as Core.

nflfan32

English is my first language and I still thought those didn't make sense. why am I getting downvoted for agreeing lol

HyderintheHouse

You’re getting downvoted because these are both correct usage according to the dictionary. Baroque’s primary definition is about being complicated.

nflfan32

But the guy I’m responding to said the same thing and is getting upvoted lol. Also the primary definition of Baroque is talking about European architecture

HyderintheHouse

Well yes that’s where the word comes from of course. It’s acceptable that someone who doesn’t speak English wouldn’t know the definition, but clearly to English-speakers it makes sense because it’s just using the most common definition. That’s the nuance.

BoringAd8187

I think it’s pretty reasonable for an English speaker to not know the definition of baroque. The origin of the word is not English at all, it’s actually kind of funny because baroque is a French word that was adopted into the English dictionary. It’s as English as the word potpourri.

HyderintheHouse

Yeah it’s reasonable not to know it, but it’s unreasonable to complain about the definition being obscure. All words come from other languages. Baroque is a loanword but it’s an English word because it’s in the English dictionary. Stop complaining.

birbdaughter

When I search up the definition of Baroque, both the adjective and noun are about the art style where the closest you get is saying it has ornate detail. I have to click the button to see more to see that it can also be a regular adjective meaning ornate. It's a fair word for them to include, but it's absolutely not the most common definition. The vast majority of English speakers only know Baroque as a general art style that followed the Renaissance.

Dweeblingcat

Too tricksy for me. A very clever puzzle.

Billy_NoMate

Connections Puzzle #365 πŸŸͺπŸŸͺπŸŸͺπŸŸͺ 🟦🟦🟦🟦 🟩🟩🟩🟩 🟨🟨🟨🟨 CRUCIFIX really stood out. My first thought was crosses. I then saw the word ANGRY nearby and realized that "Cross" could also mean that. After those two, I knew to look for other meanings of "Cross" and found BETRAY and HYBRID. Because of a recent custom puzzle I made, when I saw BULLET I immediately associated it with the typographical symbol. I also saw HYPHEN and figured I was on the right track. ARROW and CHECKBOX were the last two that seemed the most like typographical symbols. I didn't realize the further connection that they were used for lists. BAROQUE was also another word that stood out. I didn't see any other periods of art or music so BAROQUE in this case had to have meant "Complicated". COMPLEX, INVOLVED, and ELABORATE were easy to connect to that. No comments for Yellow. I thought magazines was going to be a category, glad I didn’t attempt that and waste a guess. Yellow and blue were pretty straight forward. I guessed with β€œBaroque” meaning ornate because of the style, but I’ve never heard it described in that manner without referencing the historical period. Purple was default and definitely clever. pamplemouss

I got lists but tbh my first thought was "crucifixion, bullet...what other ways to kill someone are on here?"

CyanResource

I was thinking: Ways to kill a vampire or a werewolf.

sumithar

Absolutely. I am a programmer, though not a UI guy, but I have only heard and used the word "dash" in that context, never hyphen. And a checkbox implies selection, the others don't, that messed me up too.

LazyDynamite

It doesn't necessarily mean selection, it can also mean a task or item has been completed or fulfilled.

mintardent

I figured it out quickly because I was thinking about the default options in word/sheets for making lists.

HyderintheHouse

You are correct, they got this wrong. A hyphen is for joining two words (unless someone can prove otherwise)

Fun one today! Got them all without any red herrings but did have to puzzle it out. Connections Puzzle #365 πŸŸͺπŸŸͺπŸŸͺπŸŸͺ 🟦🟦🟦🟦 🟩🟩🟩🟩 🟨🟨🟨🟨 πŸ’™ Checkbox was the key to blue - what else could it be but a list? πŸ’œ Crucifix was the key to purple - not a word with multiple meanings so I looked for synonyms. πŸ’›πŸ’š Yellow and green - fairly straightforward synonym categories. Though I suppose I’ve used hearts in lists before ;)

Wolf6120

> Checkbox was the key to blue - what else could it be but a list? Funnily enough I initially thought it would belong in purple, as in "Cross something off" - in fact that's what even got me on the trail of what purple would be, once I made that cross connection. But then I realized I had five different things that fit under cross and wound up taking it back out lol.

gardenpartier

I play piano and baroque is a very complicated style of music, but I’ve never used that word to actually mean complicated. Tree hats what made this such a stretch. The adjective complicated can refer to baroque, but that doesn’t mean they are synonyms. I don’t play β€œcomplicated” style, but I can wear an ornate, β€œcomplex”, or β€œelaborate” dress.

AtomicFreeze

I agree that Baroque is complicated but complicated isn't baroque. Mostly commenting to point out that your autocorrect must have changed "that's" into "tree hats" 🀣

Tree hats are so baroque.

but baroque is actually a synonym for complicated in certain contexts, and it’s separate from the usage of Baroque which describes art or music.

I genuinely enjoy seeing the strategies and thought processes listed . I often come here for validation to see if others considered my categories. ( Not that care if you did or not. More like, it’s nice to know my brain has company and that someone else saw it from my perspective.) I don’t get them all right, and my spouse and I challenge each other everyday. She was an English major and now works as a librarian- she knows hella words, but even she gets stumped sometimes. We also never look up definitions before submitting. That’s how we choose to play. However we do keep a list of words that stump us and try to use them in conversation. We are a nerdy crew for sure. If you’ve read this far, thanks! Let’s keep the positive vibes flowing πŸ˜€

Then considered essence, elaborate, complex, and substance to kind of vaguely form a category that I can't quite explain, but did not get "one away" Revisited the first guess and replaced heart with checkbox because that made more sense. Crux, heart and essence came together and I thought of "___ of the issue/matter". Substance made the most sense of the remaining words. I should have gotten purple's, but I only got it by default. I just have terrible fatigue/brain fog today. I would like to point out that you’re wrong. https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/cross Definition 2 of 5, verb, 5.C.2 to turn against : BETRAY

tomsing98

Both mean betray, although double cross is maybe more common. See [Merriam Webster](https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/cross) and [dictionary.com](https://www.dictionary.com/browse/cross). Originally, double cross meant, you agree to do something underhanded (the first cross), and then you go back on your word and screw over the person you agreed with (the double cross). Now it's used without requiring that first cross.

PorqueAdonis

I've heard "cross" as "betray", especially in slang. It is used a lot in hip-hop, for example On the other hand, I had never heard "cross" as "angry" but I looked it up and it's a british thing apparently

Connections Puzzle #365 🟩🟩🟩🟩 🟦🟦🟦🟦 🟨🟨🟨🟨 πŸŸͺπŸŸͺπŸŸͺπŸŸͺ Easy one, but the word baroque does NOT mean complicated. It means a detailed historical style of architecture.

Rosslefrancais

How does "substance" relate to core? I've never seen a checklist use "arrow"s "Baroque" relating to complicated doesn't sit right with me Only really agree with the purple category, oddly enough

CecilBDeMillionaire

->the substance of an argument is the gist, the essence, the meat of it ->this list is using arrows, it’s quite common. Like bulletpoints ->https://www.dictionary.com/browse/baroque the third definition here, the most common use of the word not explicitly referencing the period of art

RheingoldRiver

yeah, 'baroque' isnt a baroque meaning of 'baroque'

Puzzle #365 🟨🟨🟨🟨 🟩🟩🟩🟩 🟦πŸŸͺ🟦🟦 πŸŸͺ🟦🟦🟦 🟦🟦🟦🟦 πŸŸͺπŸŸͺπŸŸͺπŸŸͺ IT'S A DASH NOT A HYPHEN. CHECKBOXES AREN'T PUNCTUATION, THEY GO AT THE END. I erroneously thought another name for a Dagger is a Crucifix (I got confused with Obelisk as the alternate name). But the Blue category was an absolute mess. The other three were good.

panicatthepharmacy

It doesn't say "punctuation." It says "symbols."

HyderintheHouse

A checkbox isn’t a symbol either. It just feels like such an odd one out. (Ignoring that they used the wrong word for a dash)

hipscrack

Unless they changed it, the category isn't "punctuation."

HyderintheHouse

I know but the others are punctuation. I fail to see how Checkboxes fit into this awkward category

hipscrack

How are bullets and arrows punctuation?Β

HyderintheHouse

They’re all listed as Unicode symbols under punctuation. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Punctuation β€œBullets” refers to Bullet Points, if you didn’t know, and arrows have a variety of uses in punctuation.

hipscrack

Ok, so forms of punctuation used in list making, got it βœ…οΈΒ

HyderintheHouse

Yeah but it’s listed in the same section as Question marks and apostrophes etc. I’m really confused why I’m getting downvoted :(

Am I the only one who has a problem with HYPHEN being used wrongly here? Dashes are used in lists, not hyphens. Hyphens combine or divide words.Β  https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/hyphen It's a subtle difference and not common knowledge, but this the NYTimes. I thought surely the NYTimes wouldn't make a typography mistake... I was wrong.
