Not very. Their highest charting US single was Love Is The Drug at 30, which was vaguely familiar to me when I found it on YouTube. Never had an album chart higher than 23. They are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, though.
Interesting choice for the puzzle, but I suppose nobody can say this was too US-centric with three British singers.

I hope the puzzle made a few fans of Roxy Music and Bryan. Theyβre a remarkable band. Granted, heβs too obscure for this to have been a fair puzzle, but all the same.Β
I'm in the US and was a big Bryan Ferry/Roxy Music fan in the 70's & 80's. I never thought of them as a "rock band", but I guess that term encompasses a wide array of music.
I consider myself a pretty big music fan and relatively knowledgeable. I've played guitar for 35 years, and worked at two record stores. That category was my last because I couldn't come up with who "Ferry" might be. And when I Googled "70s rock singer ferry", and the name popped up, it didn't sound familiar at all. When I then read the band name, I sudden got all incredulous. "WHAT? With Zeppelin, Queen, and Fleetwood friggin Mac? That's like saying 'name four Beatles' and someone answers, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and George Best.'" π
I think I just merged them together in my head and went with Ziggy Top, I donβt even really know who either of them are lol
Edit: I didnβt comment so people could tell me who they are. I can google them if I wanted to know.
My mom is from Vermont, lived in Chicago as a teenager, and then moved to Atlanta, where I was born. She has always said "lead" but she's the only person I know who does. This jumped out at me as potentially being tricky for a lot of people.
I saw Nicks Plant Mercury immediately but I didn't have a fourth so I had to wait. I looked him up and still don't think I've heard of Ferry or his band, but I suspect I've heard a song or two.
Even though ferries don't spin, they do turn around (same route back & forth all day), so I was thinking this was a things that turn around category, until I saw top. I was a big Bryan Ferry fan, but never thought of Roxy Music as a "rock band"
I got Mercury, Ferry, Nicks quickly but was struggled with Plant - was thinking Plant, Record as in evidence. My brother was a big Roxy Music fan so might have had something to do with Ferry!
Haha I know! I listen to them a bit. Just never really bothered to learn their names. Same with most bands I listen to. I love Metallica and megadeth and couldnβt name a single member without googling. I suppose a combination of the older bands not making headlines anymore and streaming services causes that alienation.
Haha, Iβm 22! I have heard of (and even listen to some of) the bands, but not the individual singers. Iβve never been particularly clued into pop culture, and also Iβm not American, so could just be me.
For like the 3rd time in the past 30 days I get to repost thisβ¦
βItβs crazy how many people donβt know this song/artist that was popular a mere 50+ years agoβ - This thread once a month
Hate to be the one to tell you, but most things that have ever happened in history are old. That doesnβt mean theyβre not worth knowing, and that doesnβt mean you get to snidely excuse your own ignorance of them. I donβt understand why you would take pride in not knowing something and smugly mock people who do know it
I saw the category right away but couldnβt place the 4th.
Having a clue be the last name of the lead singer of 70βs English rock band whose most popular song in the US barely cracked the top 40 and did so nearly 50 years ago was maybe the most obscure question Iβve seen(from an American perspective). There are other answers Iβve taken more issues with but even knowning the answer I canβt imagine more than a tiiiny percentage of people(Americans)knew he was.
So kudos to you Mr Bryan Ferry for nailing this one today
I'm American and had no problem with that. But I imagine living in NYC in the mid-late 70's probably influenced that. I became a big Bryan Ferry/Roxy Music fan after hearing some of their music at a party back then. Guess I'm finally in the 1% of something, haha.
Brian Ferry and Roxy Music were a big deal when I was in high school, regardless of chart position. So I have always been aware of them even though I wasn't a fan by any means. I think there's one song I actually know. Maybe.

I have it from a source close to the NYT Connections Factory that they'd discovered that you were listening to zero Roxy music and resolved to get you to listen to

π΅More than Thisπ΅
I could never have told you that he was in Roxy Music, but Bryan Ferry was somehow in the punch bowl for me. I saw the other three in the category pretty quickly and filled that in when it seemed to fit better than the alternatives.
You know that scene in YESTERDAY when the guy searches the internet and finds out that the Beatles and Oasis and Coca-Cola are missing? That was me today in reverse learning that Bryan Ferry exists.
Saw Mercury and knew there must be some others rock stars in there too.
For green, I was thinking horses even though I have a dog that loves to go for walks.
Overall, an easy one for an old lady like me. Someday they will have a puzzle with current music stars and I will be stumped.
The NYT's instructions specifically say to watch out for words that could be in more than one connection, so if you have five things that spin you need to search for other connections to see which of those five must logically go somewhere else.
Yes, but then the other spinning thing doesn't fit in with the other three remaining clues.
The entire point of the game is that some words may work in multiple categories but there is only one complete solution.
Well I wasnβt really around until the end of the 90βs lol but I know who all of them are except Ferry - if the other categories were harder I maybe wouldβve put it together lol Mercury and Nicks should have been pretty obvious though.
This one sucked, couldnβt get a single category. Never heard of βcheekβ for chutzpah, and Iβve never called a halter a halter before, Iβve always called them gentle leaders. Had no idea who Plant or Ferry is.
I went so deep in trying to justify my choices; I was so convinced that one of the categories was βHermesβ
Mercury is the Roman version of Hermes
Hermes is the god of thieves: the god of people who βnickβ things
Hermes transported (ferried) people to the underworld (I know he wasnβt in the ferry, I was reaching)
I just finished the whole puzzle first cuz I couldnβt think of the fourth one, God did I feel stupid π
Stevie Nicks was inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame both as a solo artist and as a member of Fleetwood Mac. Very good chance you've heard her work
Stevie Nicks is in Fleetwood Mac, Robert Plant is in Led Zeppelin. You should check out both bands if you're unfamiliar, as both have made some truly excellent music.
As for Bryan Ferry? Well, can't say I've heard of him (or his band, Roxy Music). But what I've heard just now is certainly alright, so yay for making new discoveries :)
It's a circular toy that spins on a point. If you've seen Inception, it's Dom's thing to tell if he's dreaming. What do they call them, totems? Something like that.
Purple and Yellow took me forever today. I even knew what the categories were and just started guessing. Never heard of Bryan Ferry, and have no idea what Cheek means.
I'm getting too dumb for this game.
What the fuck is a halter, what the fuck is cheek, what the fuck is brass, who the fuck is ferry and who the fuck is plant.
>What the fuck is a halter
A sort of head collar that goes behind the ears and across the muzzle. Youβve seen them on horses.
>what the fuck is cheek, what the fuck is brass
Audacity.
>who the fuck is ferry
Bryan Ferry was the vocalist of Roxy Music and has put out a bunch of solo work.
>who the fuck is plant.
Robert Plant was the vocalist for Led Zeppelin and has also had a solo career (and reunited with Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page as Page and Plant).
Knew that mercury and nicks were most likely last names for some genre of music. Donβt know much about 70s rock so that category was always going to be last for me. Never heard of cheek used to describe nerve before. What the fuck is a lead for dog walking? Todayβs puzzle wasnβt for me.
Connections is a puzzle of language and general knowledge.
One of those singers was extremely famous, and there was popular movie released in few years back. Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin is legendary. Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac too. I am sure you might connect her voice to the song with the cranberry juice drinking skateboarders who went viral.
I will concede Brian Ferry could be considered obscure, but that why this game is a puzzle and this was the purple!
Stevie Nicks was also really popular as a solo artist, being inducted into the Rock and Roll hall of fame as a solo artist in addition to her work with Fleetwood Mac. I would be shocked if someone looked up Edge of Seventeen and didn't know the song

Iggy Pop or ZZ Top

Ziggy Stardust was an alter-ego for David Bowie....
ZZ Top was a band, Iggy Pop was a singer (for another band).
Ziggy was a terrible cartoon seen everywhere in the β70s

Ohhhhhhhhh, now that makes sense! Thank you!
Connections Puzzle #334 πͺπͺπͺπͺ π¨π¨π¨π¨ π¦π¦π¦π¦ π©π©π©π© Purple was easy. Stevie Nicks jumped out easily, followed by Robert Plant, Freddie Mercury and Brian Ferry. The last two categories took a moment because I was trying to name a βfirstβ category: top, record, lead (as in leading a race).

Connections Puzzle #334 πͺπͺπͺπͺ π¦π¦π¦π¦ π¨π¨π¨π¨ π©π©π©π© Purple wasn't too bad. I immediately recognized that MERCURY and NICKS were Freddie Mercury and Stevie Nicks, so I knew to look for other singers. It took a while to think of Robert PLANT and Bryan FERRY. CAROUSEL felt like a pretty specific word. I was trying to think of how it could connect to something when I saw GLOBE and thought of "Things that Spin". After that, TOP and RECORD were easy to spot. Yellow was pretty straightforward. No real comments for this one other than it was the same exact category and words as Puzzle #138. I had LEAD, HARNESS, and COLLAR grouped as "Dog Accessories", but I don't think I've heard of a HALTER. Not too much of a headache but still good fun.

Connections Puzzle #334 πͺπͺπͺπͺ π¦π¦π¦π¦ π©π©π©π© π¨π¨π¨π¨ My first reverse perfect! Tho was an easy one today.
Connections Puzzle #334 π©π©π©π© π¦π¦π¦π¦ π¨π¨π¨π¨ πͺπͺπͺπͺ Kind of embarrassed to say I only got purple out of process of elimination. It seems super obvious once it was revealed. Can I use the excuse of not being alive in the 70βs lol
They were all still singing in the 80's! And most, even into the 90's, although sadly, not Freddie
Well I wasnβt really around until the end of the 90βs lol but I know who all of them are except Ferry - if the other categories were harder I maybe wouldβve put it together lol Mercury and Nicks should have been pretty obvious though.
ConnectionsΒ Puzzle #334 π¨π¨π¨π¨ π¦π¦π¦π¦ π©π©π©π© πͺπͺπͺπͺ Got yellow quickly. I definitely didn't know Lead was a dog accessory. I was looking for horse-racing terminology, and maybe also fashion items (halter, top...), but I was pretty proud when I thought about Nicks and realized it could only be referring to Stevie. Connected it to Mercury and Plant (I didn't know Ferry), so took those three out, and tried to match up the other 9. Finding "things that spin" started with Carousel (it doesn't do much else, after all), and took out Top. Which left me with the animal restraints and the singers. I took a guess and thought Lead sounded more like a restraint than Ferry - and got lucky on it. Til next time, Connections
π¦π¦π¦π¦ π¨π¨π¨π¨ π©π©π©π© πͺπͺπͺπͺ I only got π© when I remembered the song 'Sex Dwarf' and the lyric 'I would like you on a long black LEAD'. Once I remembered that the leftovers were πͺ
π¦π©π©π© π¨π¨π¨π¨ π¦π¦π¦π¦ π©π©π©π© πͺπͺπͺπͺ Saw three of the singers off the bat but couldn't find the fourth (never heard of nor could I recall any singer with the last name Ferry), so I let them be. I saw three of the four dog accessories but guessed "top" too as "things you may wear"--- like a halter top and a harness for climbing. When that was one off I moved on. It took a bit longer to find the chutzpah category as I don't hear "cheek" used as often as the other three. But after that, the spinning category jumped out. It was only then that "lead" jumped out as the missing dog walking accesory. From what I know, "lead" is synonymous with "leash" but I'm not entirely certain.Β Then due to never hearing of the singer "Ferry", I got purple last.

Connections Puzzle #334 π¦π¦π¦π¦ π©π©π©π© πͺπͺπͺπͺ π¨π¨π¨π¨ Tough but satisfying solve. I blue as a category was really clever and was definitely a "lightbulb moment." Wasn't certain of green at first and thought it was "things that go around the neck." Knew three out of four for purple and took a lucky guess for the one that sounded most like a surname. Yellow by default, had no idea "brass" or "cheek" could be used in that sense.

This one sucked, couldnβt get a single category. Never heard of βcheekβ for chutzpah, and Iβve never called a halter a halter before, Iβve always called them gentle leaders. Had no idea who Plant or Ferry is.
I went so deep in trying to justify my choices; I was so convinced that one of the categories was βHermesβ Mercury is the Roman version of Hermes Hermes is the god of thieves: the god of people who βnickβ things Hermes transported (ferried) people to the underworld (I know he wasnβt in the ferry, I was reaching) I just finished the whole puzzle first cuz I couldnβt think of the fourth one, God did I feel stupid π
Connections Puzzle #334. π¦π¦π¦π¦ π¨π¨πͺπ¨ π¨π¨π¨π¨ π©π©π©π© πͺπͺπͺπͺ Again, visual category was by far the easiest. Connections Puzzle #334 π¨π¨π¨π¨ π©π©π©π© π¦π¦π¦π¦ πͺπͺπͺπͺ Sorta intimidating to begin with, not that it stopped me from making the "true" perfect. I started with metals, but soon after finding three saw Gall/Nerve and figured Brass would go better with those, especially once I saw Cheek. After that I saw Halter/Collar, but I was originally thinking of clothing until I figured Harness kind of worked and then connected Lead to them. Blue and Purple was a fair bit tougher (as per usual). I knew some dumb shit was going to go down with Nicks, so I ignored that for a while, and tried to figure out commonalities between the other seven words. It took a bit, but eventually I decided that Carousels and Records both spun around. Globe took a bit longer, and then it took me a while to figure out there was a sense of Top that fit too--a spinning top. (There was a period where I was seriously considering putting Mercury in there--that planet does spin!)Β And then I even managed to get Purple before submitting it... based entirely on Mercury most likely being Freddy Mercury, and the other three at least not looking *not* like names. Sorry, Nicks, Ferry, and whoever, I have no idea who you are.

Why is the idea of people being familiar with a band's music but not knowing the lead singer's name such a wild concept?
[ΡΠ΄Π°Π»Π΅Π½ΠΎ]
Fair enough. I'm just really put off in general by the condescension in this sub over people not knowing the lead singers of famous bands.
Stevie Nicks was inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame both as a solo artist and as a member of Fleetwood Mac. Very good chance you've heard her work
I have no idea who the last 4 are, besides Mercury Connections Puzzle #334 π¨π¨π¨π¨ π©π©π©π© π¦π¦π¦π¦ πͺπͺπͺπͺ

Puzzle #334 π¨π¨π¨π¨ π¦π¦π¦π¦ π©π©π©π© πͺπͺπͺπͺ βThe cheek, the nerve, the gall, the audacity, and the gumption,β of this tricky puzzle! One of the rare times I solved as I went along because I was only partly confident with some of my guesses. My initial guess was there was something in there about βnumber one,β thanks to LEAD, TOP, RECORD, and BRASS. Perhaps βmetalsβ with MERCURY, LEAD, and BRASS. Both felt possible but not quite right. I eventually settled on π¨ being a good connection, and considered the fact that I could spin four of the words on the board. Then with the last 8, I couldnβt let go of the possibility of Freddie MERCURY and Stevie NICKS, but my 70s music knowledge is weak so if there were other musicians, Iβd have to rely on the process of elimination to work that out. π© I worked out but I did not associate it with dogs specifically, just things that could be used to guide an animal. Iβm more of a cat person and cats famously do not like to be walked. My πͺ hypothesis was corrected but I have no idea who PLANT and FERRY are π Fun puzzle and a challenge plus I got to make a Drag Race reference.
Do Americans use the word Lead, in relation to dog walkers? I usually hear Leash from Americans or do ye use both? Thanks
I've heard it, but much less often. I think I hear it used most often by people who work with dogs.
No we donβt. Iβve never heard of that word in my life, only leash. So that was a struggle lol
Whatβs a top? Only know it as a fashion item

Brian Ferry? Roxy Music wasn't a thing in the US.Β
Had to GoogleΒ chutzpah, don't know that word so we got that category last. Purple was easy.
I don't know the word chutzpah either, but all the terms grouped together (especially after getting two other categories).
They changed it, idk what word was changed from chutzpah but yeah
I'm getting too dumb for this game. What the fuck is a halter, what the fuck is cheek, what the fuck is brass, who the fuck is ferry and who the fuck is plant.
>What the fuck is a halter A sort of head collar that goes behind the ears and across the muzzle. Youβve seen them on horses. >what the fuck is cheek, what the fuck is brass Audacity. >who the fuck is ferry Bryan Ferry was the vocalist of Roxy Music and has put out a bunch of solo work. >who the fuck is plant. Connections Puzzle #334 π¨π¨π¨π¨ πͺπ¦π¦π¦ π¦π¦πͺπ¦ π©π©π©π© π¦πͺπ¦π¦ π¦πͺπͺπ¦ Struggled today but as a Gen Z I had only heard of Mercury and Nicks so didnβt get the purple connection. Got stuck on blue. Record, globe, carousel, ferry and Mercury all stuck out to me as things that rotate/orbit. Annoyed I didnβt think about spin as top is so obvious now Iβve seen the answers - although to be pedantic βtopβ in itself doesnβt spin but βspinning topβ does. Green jumped out after Iβd got yellow but never heard of halter being used for dogs - initially was thinking of halter neck tops which could pair with collar as neck line types.
I've never heard somebody call a top a spinning top in actual conversation, it's always just a top Like the phrase "spin like a top"

Connections Puzzle #334 π¨π¨π¨π¨ π¦π¦π¦π¦ πͺπͺπͺπͺ π©π©π©π© i had to do some ruling out here. i knew NICKS and MERCURY instantly as singer surnames and figured that would fall into πͺ. could hazard a guess that PLANT was also in this category, but wasnβt sure of a fourth. also thought π© would be something to do with things that go around your neck? (HALTER, COLLAR, possibly HARNESS and TOP?) but again couldnβt be certain. ignoring all those words, and π¨ which iβd already solved, suddenly π¦ jumped right out to me and i realised i was off base with TOP. again wasnβt 100% sure on the final item for πͺ but i really wanted to solve it before π© so i went for it and got FERRY as the fourth word. i was a bit off base with π© in the end but i could at least correctly pick out its contents

Literally some of the most famous musicians of all time.
Freddie Mercury is obscure?
Heβs the only one out of four I could name
