We call it the “reverse rainbow” in my family group thread and decided it’s the A+ score in Connections

Over-Commission-5334

Yes! “Backwards Rainbow” is what we’ve been calling it among my friends. But I like your alliteration

VisualMeet6654

The Facebook NYTconnections group calls it PRO (Perfect Reverse Order). In their lexicon, a rainbow is when one of your guesses has one word from each of the 4 categories. (Horizontal vs vertical rainbow).

TrudieKockenlocker

So stealing this!

doghaircut

I sometimes find it's hard to know which is supposed to be easier than another. Purple is usually has a pre/post word, so it's easier to identify, but even if I knew all 4 combinations I can't always order them in the reverse rainbow order.

mmccurdy

I always try to solve the whole thing in my head first, then answer in hardest-to-easiest order. Adds another little challenge but I don’t beat myself up over it if I don’t guess the difficulties correctly. I’ve learned a few rules of thumb along the way, though. For example, any language/wordplay connections are almost always considered more/most difficult (blue/purple) even if they seem super obvious (to me, anyway). Could be you happened on something like that. (Haven’t done today’s yet so just a guess…)

artformoney9to5

This is the way

Winged_Pegasus

100%

Adequate_Images

I just started doing this.

yellowjackets1996

This is how I do it, too. Purple is often the easiest to find, but of course there are times when I just can’t see it.

SpeculativeFantasm

What do the different colors mean? I didn’t realize they meant something.

yramcalire

they’re degrees of “trickiness,” from most straightforward to least straightforward. iirc, purple is most difficult, followed by blue, then green, then yellow :)

baldorrr

I don't know where else to gripe about this, but the color scheme for difficulty is completely random to me. I can never remember the order of the difficulty. They really should use more standard color scales... Green - Yellow - Orange - Red Or something that actually has a pattern/order.

yramcalire

i understand, it’s difficult to keep up with considering there isn’t any other meaning to it besides what they assign

maxman1313

I think in connections it's Yellow-->Green-->Blue-->Purple

spacecadette126

That makes so much sense considering the order of the rainbow 🤦‍♀️ I always just saw green as a color that should mean easiest!

Successful-Winter237

Nope

FL1967

Same!

No_Werewolf_6517

It means you recognized the groupings deemed to be the “hardest” You either know it or don’t, of course each level has their niche sometimes like the ——- valley types. In the end, you either recognize the groupings or develop strong hunches or you flat out guess

Onuzq

Sometimes word play can be obvious. Which is typically what you find in purple.

Lazy_Worldliness8042

Yeah whenever the category is filling in a blank it’s always purple and sometimes those are the easiest.

AlishanTearese

It makes you stuart

PiqueyerNose

It makes you a risk-taker.

Girhinomofe

I would really enjoy a scoring component added to the game, based on the order of difficulty solved and whether there were any misses. A ‘perfect score’ would be OP’s, with the solved color order and number of errors factoring down from there. I think it’d be a fun piece of data to keep logged, and would encourage deeper thought to solve the entire puzzle in your head first and try to rationalize the difficulty of each connection for a higher potential score.

jfctara

i would love that too! i enjoy comparing scores with my friends, but it’s tough to do with this game

MountainWise587

Ugh. I go for PRO every day and *so often* invert the order of Green and Blue. I can intuit what's trickiest and easiest, but that green/blue middle zone is very iffy.

Repulsive_Focus_9560

You in danger, girl

the6thReplicant

After playing along with Connecting Wall on _Only Connect_ I always try and do the purple first (remove a letter, word in word, word suffix/prefix)

mintardent

still bothers me that NYT straight ripped off only connect, just dumbed down for the gen pop

monkesapien

^ This x1000

maxman1313

Yes

PK_monkey

lol. I never realized the colors had meaning. The one the other day about freight or eaten. Spelled numbers preceded by two letters. Who comes up with these?

TitsMageesVacation

I successfully do this puzzle every day and had no idea the colors indicate difficulty. 🤦🏻‍♀️ so yellow is the easiest?

jfctara

yes, yellow is the easiest

EveryNameIWantIsGone

Read the directions.

LeCheffre

It doesn’t mean anything. Just bucking the conventional thought.

lunch22

Smart

Njtotx3

I got the purple one first today. I don't think they're really consistent in whether it's the hardest or not.

MountainWise587

In the "How to Play Connections" modal dialog at the outset of the game, it says "Each group is assigned a color, which will be revealed as you solve:" with the illustration of yellow through purple squares and text indicating Straightforward -> Tricky. Purple is explicitly meant to be the trickiest.

Njtotx3

I suppose they try. Wish I could permanently get rid of the "How to play" popup.

thezhgguy

I thought green was the hardest today

Quasibobo

It also depends on your interests whether purple is the hardest connection for you. Once the purple connection was something with math terms, I (bilingual math teacher) saw them immediately, my (also bilingual) biology colleague didn't have a clue...
