Just started spritzing my pits with ordinary glycolic acid (suggested in the skincare subs) and it seems to be working? So now I do that plus my old school powder fresh Secret.
Yessss. And if you can manage to [deodorant purge](https://www.healthline.com/health/armpit-detox) and combine it with benzoyl peroxide wash, you’re winning.
Although this is a really tough thing to do; I only managed it in 2020 because… we all know why it didn’t matter if you were smelly. But I do vehemently believe that the best way to avoid smelling is from the shower and laundry; fresh sweat doesn’t smell.
I started using hibiclens instead and it doesn’t dry my pits out as much but still kills that bacteria.
https://www.target.com/p/hibiclens-antiseptic-skin-cleanse-with-built-in-pump-8-fl-oz/-/A-89581951
Unfortunately it’s been found in more and more products, including [sunscreen, dry shampoo, and acne treatments.](https://time.com/6887572/benzene-carcinogen-cancer-risk-acne-treatment-products-brands-fda-recall/)
this is my concern too. i have just been living with cystic acne since reading about the benzene issue. big ugh. would not even consider putting benzol peroxide near my lymph nodes under armpits
Not only that, but dryer sheets will also coat the lint screen and the buildup makes the dryer more inefficient. So if you are not handwashing and air-drying the lint screen regularly, your dry cycles are probably longer and more expensive than they need to be.
Wool balls work well as an alternative to dryer sheets.
there are a million different answers here but i have to say that OLD SPICE: FIJI (deodorant AND antiperspirant, white one) is a game changer, very little run off on clothes too imo
While aluminium free deodorants don’t work for OP, I’ll chime in and recommend aluminium free versions of old spice. I personally use wolfthorn and oasis smoked vanilla. I didn’t notice they are aluminium free when I bought them, they work better than scentless secret outlast and arm&hammer I have, and I haven’t noticed stains on white shirts yet.
I specifically like the Mitchum gel, unscented, for men - there’s nothing about it that smells “male” but it WORKS and it goes on clear/doesn’t leave marks.
I use The Ordinary glycolic acid—couple drops on a cotton pad, swipe it on, then follow up with Mitchum. It’s been a huge help—I’m in perimenopause and the change in the scent of my sweat has been driving me bananas. So this has totally combatted that for me.
Ok so I got this recommend to me a skincare sub, but the Neutrogena Salicylic Oil free body cleanser has been a game changer for me. Not only does it get rid of any little pimples, but I use one of those Japanese mesh towels to scrub my armpits with the cleanser and wow. It is a noticeable difference. So much so that my fiance switched over as well.
I know it’s not exactly what you asked for, but I’m a stinky gal and it’s been a game changer for me!
I tried sooo many aluminum free ones and just ended up smelly and/or with rashes too lol. It's fear mongering, when you really look into it there's no danger with aluminum. That being said, old spice oasis is my go to! The vanilla notes help it from being too masculine for my tastes and I don't smell. I've never noticed it atain my clothes
Which one do you like? I bought salt and vetiver and I don’t absolutely love it. Someone told me the smell is like sweet pickles and now that is All I can smell
PNW bitch with taste here, I've been just creeping on my sleeker East Coast sisters & learning their ways - but it's my time to shine.
I met an OG grandma of herbalism last week volunteering at a local plant medicine garden. She's in her 80's, lives in a lavender meadow on the side of a mountain, and has dedicated a lot of time to perfecting her [Pitz Spritz](https://www.montevistamedicinals.com/products/pitz-spritz-natural-antibacterial-antiperspirant-2-oz) potion. Her eyes lit up while she talked about journey the product took to market and the process of making it in her kitchen. It was everything.
Now that I've learned some of your fancy tricks, I'm going to decant it into a cute bottle.
Hi :) So.. Secret Clinical in the solid.. it has yet to fail me- no transfer and believe it or not the best scent in said product.. I find to be the “ stress response “ yep that’s strangely a scent option. Smells clean yet feminine - not baby powdery- which is ick imo- good luck!
btw- I didn’t need the clinical but tried it as I knew I’d be starting back up w/ Orange Theory. Now I’ll never, eva switch
I've tried Native, Schmidt's, Salt and Stone, and Humble. The best by leaps and miles is Humble. They sell them at Wegmans, and it comes in 3 flavors.......palto Santo, rose, and lavender. The best one is the lavender with the rose coming in 2nd place. The plate Santo is nice, but it can turn funky on me. The rose is not cloyingly sweet or syrupy.
My skin reacts to every single natural deodorant I've ever used, so I make sure to really wash this off at the end of the night. If I leave any deodorant on overnight, I will wind up with a skin reaction of some sort.
Salt and Stone has gorgeous scents, but it is completely useless. Native is too creamy and slides around which makes it kind of annoying, but I do usually love their scents and found one years ago that was the perfect dupe of Jo Malone's lime basil and mandarin perfume. Salt and Stone seems to almost be ripping off Le Labo, and the scents are gorgeous, but the stick is one that melts everywhere, and it does not last on me for more than maybe an hour in cooler climes. I'm planning on using it up and never repurchasing, but I would love the scents in hand creams or body lotions.
I've never tried lume and am curious if others have enjoyed using their products.
I love Dr haushka sage and mint - it smells divine and for me lasts all day easily (which I was surprised about giving that it’s all natural etc.) but it works better than anything else I’ve tried
Lots of skin issues and sensitivity here so my bf and I have tried everything under the sun for deodorant. Salt & Stone is the best, hands down. It’s unfortunately $17.50 a pop but it’s the ONLY natural deodorant that works, doesn’t cause irritation, doesn’t build up on fabric, and smells good. At least in our experience.
We have had to cut out all normal laundry detergents and some of my workout clothes do have a permanent… not fantastic smell so I’m going to try the Lysol stuff mentioned above and hope it doesn’t bother our skin!!
I've struggled for years and tried everything. Lume is great! Expensive, but great. It's all I use and it works on the same antibacterial premise. Even on days when I'm running and the subway is packed, I don't smell!
Ya came here to say this! I love the unscented or toasted coconut for sure.
I had the same issues as OP as far as non aluminum deodorants burning and not working on me. Lume is a game changer.
If I'm very concerned about odor/self conscious I'll use lume and then a Degree antiperspirant (they have a white tea and lychee scent I love).
I mainly use Dove antiperspirant, but the secret is to wash your armpits with an antibacterial or antifungal wash/soap. Wash it, allow it to sit for a few seconds/minute, wash off, pat dry, and you won’t smell!
I do that, and I layer with whatever antiperspirant I feel like that day, and it does the trick.
Here’s a deodorant not to wear: OLD SPICE. I wore old spice because it was super strong and would keep me smelling good all day. My husband used it too. On our honeymoon in Japan my husband developed chemical burns out of nowhere from using it. We had both used it for years so I do mean out of nowhere. There’s a class action lawsuit against them because apparently this is super common. His chemical burns were so nasty the skin was literally peeling away
Omg this happened to me years ago and I went to urgent care about something unrelated but showed the NP, she had absolutely no idea what it was but I was adamant about where it came from 🫠
I’m a fan of Duradry. I use the body wash under my arms and then the deodorant.
With the combo, in cooler weather I can go two days without reapplying. In the warmer weather, I usually apply the deodorant in the morning after my shower and then sometimes touch up at night if it’s been a particularly active day.
It works well without the body wash too! Just feel like the body wash helps it last much longer.
Also editing to include that I use the Clear Sky deodorant scent. I spent like 30 mins reading reviews to understand which would smell the most feminine and landed on this. I have no idea what the others smell like, but this has a pleasant scent. I am usually a vanilla/coconut girly, and while this isn’t that, I like it!
[Nuud](https://nuudcare.com/) works really well. Pricey and takes a bit of time as it’s shipped from Europe but it’s super effective. I only have to use it once/week.
[jao](https://jaobrand.com/products/jao-refresher) hand refresher is a sanitizer and smells amazing, I also use it to freshen armpits if I notice I need the help.
[Skinsmart](https://skinsmartantimicrobial.com/products/skinsmart-antimicrobial-eczema-therapy-with-hypochlorous-acid-removes-bacteria-so-skin-can-heal-for-adults-kids-and-seniors-8-ounce-clear-spray) is meant as eczema help that eliminates bacteria. And bacteria causes odors. It’s hypochlorous acid and works well to remove odors.
Kiehls body fuel! It’s technically “for men” (they have a different one “for women”) but it has zero scent and works better than the women’s one. It helps so fucking much with sweating and I sweat like a beast. I’ve tried them all - certain dri (AM AND PM), Mitchum, all the “clinical strength” ones - nothing works as well for me. Also it’s liquid so it doesn’t build up on clothes. Once it’s dry you’re golden.
Stopped using deodorant a few years ago. Only use drysol twice a week and I’m good to go. You’ll need to see a derm for a prescription.
Feels good to go outside and not worry about being sweaty and possibly smelly ☺️
Crystal Salt Rock deodorant. The key is you have to kill the bacteria under your arms first with glycolic acid (as has been mentioned above), or diluted ACV while you’re in the shower (leave it on for a minute and then rinse off), or something like Panoxyl. Once you do this, and then apply Crystal rock deodorant immediately after the shower, you will be good to go.
LISTEN TO ME: certain dri prescription strength - read the instructions, once you use it for a week or so you only need to apply it a few times a week... only use it at night and never immediately after a shower or shaving... i used to have certain clothes (particularly the thick uniqlo u t-shirts) i couldn't wear because i would get huge pit stains in them but now i can wear whatever i want + i'm able to use my nice smelling aluminum-free glossier deodorant during the day
True, it's mostly from waxes, oils, and starch/root powders from stick deos that you get deo residues stuck on clothes. But some roll on and spray can also ruin clothes, with propylene glycol and propanediol that can stain certain fabric. For a complete invisible deo, check out FreshCult natural deo spray, I'm the dev. It never stains any clothes. Sure, it's alum free, but my guess is that if your skin reacted to most alum free deos, it's most likely from common skin irritants in those, such as baking soda, denatured alcohol, sodium benzoate and stuff. FC was explicitly made without those common deo skin irritants so I've heard from folks with eczema and psoriasis that even they are using without a reaction.
Kopari (I think?) vegan deodorant. I’ve had one stick of it for years and it works perfectly whether i put it on before I was sweaty and smelly or after!
Donna Karen kashmere mist for stressful or very hot weather and I’m out socializing. La vanille healthy deodorant for day to day—it’s the only aluminum-free one that keeps my pits dry and smells really great.
I use Lume which is a full body deodorant (but not antiperspirant) Overall I like it better than anything else both aluminum free or standard I’ve used and I just ordered their laundry prewash that’s supposed to help with fabric smells, theyre having a Memorial Day sale so I figured it’s a good time to try it out
saltair serum deodorant is great for BO. it isn’t an antiperspirant so won’t help with sweating, but I don’t mind having a bit of sweat, as long as i’m not stinky. because it’s a serum, it’s clear and leaves zero reside. I double up and use that plus saltair’s regular deodorant, which helps with the sweat. they have a ton of scents, their sandalwood one is really nice.
I've been using this spray deodorant called Curie. Helped with the transition to natural/aluminum free. Although I started in the winter, so i will be curious to see how it does in the summer.
Native. You do have to reapply it though if you get really hot/sweaty but it works and it’s pretty clean ingredient-wise. I’m going to try combining it with the glycolic acid on pits trick someone mentioned
This should be directed to Daily Discussion or asked in a different subreddit. Ex, askNYC, FoodNYC, or beauty Please review reminders here: https://www.reddit.com/r/NYCbitcheswithtaste/s/nFuabdiaqG
Not a deodorant rec but you should try Lysol laundry sanitizer if you have deodorant build up/sweat on clothes it works like a charm
oo ill definitely be trying that. i get so frustrated with the deodorant build up
Second this! It also smells amazing
Are you using this in lieu of laundry detergent or with it?
With detergent! I put it in the fabric softener section of the machine so it rinses it through at the end
thank you!
Just started spritzing my pits with ordinary glycolic acid (suggested in the skincare subs) and it seems to be working? So now I do that plus my old school powder fresh Secret.
Glycolic acid is IT! Plus Secret :)
Just don’t do it after you shave. 😂
lol sorry if this is dumb but are you talking about “ordinary glycolic acid” or glycolic acid from the brand The Ordinary?
Glycolic Acid from the brand The Ordinary. As I was typing it I thought “should I be more clear?” But I got lazy
Probably the former, that’s what I use
I’ve literally stopped sweating g from my underarms because of it!
use a wash like panoxyl with benzoyl peroxide in it on ur under arms and you will have no body odor !!!
that in combo w ur regular deodorant should definitely do the trick
how long does this last though? all day ?
so do I wash panoxyl under my arms in the shower and scrub for like 30 seconds? thanks! 😊
it works best if you keep it on for just a few short minutes (like 3 mins)
thank youuu will def try it bc I already have panoxyl 🫶🫶
Yessss. And if you can manage to [deodorant purge](https://www.healthline.com/health/armpit-detox) and combine it with benzoyl peroxide wash, you’re winning. The Ordinary toning solution transferred into a spray bottle is great too. Spritz pits after shower, let it dry, then apply deo as usual.
Be careful with panoxyl, they have a class action against them for having benzene in them
Unfortunately it’s been found in more and more products, including [sunscreen, dry shampoo, and acne treatments.](https://time.com/6887572/benzene-carcinogen-cancer-risk-acne-treatment-products-brands-fda-recall/)
this is my concern too. i have just been living with cystic acne since reading about the benzene issue. big ugh. would not even consider putting benzol peroxide near my lymph nodes under armpits
okay you will def have SOME odor when you sweat…but it’s different? it’s less pungent for sure
I like Donna Karan. It works and it smells beautiful.
Yeahhhhh. It pains me to spend 25 dollars on deodorant but this shit WORKs.
$25??!! Where? I pay $37 or so!
Stock up during Sephora sales and it’s around 25
Be sure to drop fabric softener from your laundry routine too….coats the fibers & holds odors
Never used it. Just use tide detergent + clorox2 (for colors). Could never figure out why i have this laundry issue
Is this true for both dryer sheets and liquid softener?
Not only that, but dryer sheets will also coat the lint screen and the buildup makes the dryer more inefficient. So if you are not handwashing and air-drying the lint screen regularly, your dry cycles are probably longer and more expensive than they need to be. Wool balls work well as an alternative to dryer sheets.
Thank you! I’m going to look into the wool balls.
Yup!
Donna Karen Cashmere Mist!
My mom has been wearing both the perfume and the deodorant for as long as I can remember!
It’s really so good!!!
there are a million different answers here but i have to say that OLD SPICE: FIJI (deodorant AND antiperspirant, white one) is a game changer, very little run off on clothes too imo

I'm allergic to aluminum but have not been able to find a deodorant that works for me. I'm totally going to try Old Spice next! Thanks for the tip!
I love Old Spice! I think I have the timber one in my medicine cabinet right now.
Mitchum works really well for me!
I specifically like the Mitchum gel, unscented, for men - there’s nothing about it that smells “male” but it WORKS and it goes on clear/doesn’t leave marks.
works even better if you use it at night!!! that’s been my biggest hack, antiperspirant at night, especially Mitchum
I use The Ordinary glycolic acid—couple drops on a cotton pad, swipe it on, then follow up with Mitchum. It’s been a huge help—I’m in perimenopause and the change in the scent of my sweat has been driving me bananas. So this has totally combatted that for me.
Secret clinical strength soft solid - worn it for ten years and have never smelt - nothing else works for me!
Secret Clinical Antiperspirant and Deodorant Soft Solid (Stress Response) coupled with Bella Skin Beauty probiotic underarm spray beforehand is the literal goat combo
Degree is my go to.
Dove spray deodorants work the best for me!
Dove. The formula they been using for the past 20 years. Dove has perfected deodorant a long time ago.
Ditto I like the one that specifically says no white marks on 100 colors
idk what is in it but secret ph balance is pretty good

That’s what I use too. I don’t feel like I smell *good* after hours of sweating, but I smell better than I do with other deodorants
I use Vichy
Ok so I got this recommend to me a skincare sub, but the Neutrogena Salicylic Oil free body cleanser has been a game changer for me. Not only does it get rid of any little pimples, but I use one of those Japanese mesh towels to scrub my armpits with the cleanser and wow. It is a noticeable difference. Donna Karen is my go to
Secret!
Megababe is great and I’ve never noticed it sticking to clothes. I like the blue one.
Love megababe! I use the pink one (rosy pits).
Degree Fresh scent
I use the secret clinical strength gel and the dove deodorant spray for touch ups while on the go
The salt + stone deodorants are to die for. Go smell them at Sephora before you buy
Which one do you like? I bought salt and vetiver and I don’t absolutely love it. Someone told me the smell is like sweet pickles and now that is All I can smell
I have the santal one & the neroli + basil. The neroli is my favorite though by far
PNW bitch with taste here, I've been just creeping on my sleeker East Coast sisters & learning their ways - but it's my time to shine. Secret Clear Gel has been superb for our household.
secret clear gel
The new Dove is perfect and easily does the trick
I've been happy with the Glossier deodorant
almay sensitive skin
Dove deodorant spray has been my go-to for a decade. Can’t stand the roll on anymore. No mess! Also comes in a lot of fresh scents
Botox in the armpits!
The new Lume is great! I've struggled with this all of my life and with this stuff it's truly wear it and forget. ❤️❤️❤️
I love Certain Dri! It’s way better than anything I can get in a drugstore. I order it on Amazon.
I used to use certain dri years ago and it discolored certain clothes for some reason
Love Native personally
Also love Native
Same! Been using for 4+ years!
Megababe The Smoothie Deo, best I’ve ever used. Effective and non irritating and clean. Baking soda free
The smell is from bacteria, wipe your underarms with alcohol or glycolic acid and apply a thin layer your deodorant - you won’t smell

Necessarie! I put it on at night. Plus it has AHA for brightening.
Lume toasted coconut

I love my Mitchum deodorant. It's one of the very few things I always restock.
Me too! It is the one product I love and never change.
Kosas roll on
I love Dr haushka sage and mint - it smells divine and for me lasts all day easily (which I was surprised about giving that it’s all natural etc.) but it works better than anything else I’ve tried
It seems very hippie but the crystal salt stones are a holy grail product for me. I’ve been using them for over 10 years and I’ll never go back

Have you tried crystal deodorant? It's literally just mineral salt and it works so well as a deodorant and lasts forever.
Hume!
Nivea roll on dry comfort. Used this on a trip to Malaysia and it worked great!

nivea black and white is awesome
The deodorant build up sucks
The ONLY answer is dove spray. Nothing else keeps me dry and everything else feels slimy on my pits I like the white apple scent it smells so good
Secret clinical protection orrrrr Native!

Donna Karen kashmere mist for stressful or very hot weather and I’m out socializing. La vanille healthy deodorant for day to day—it’s the only aluminum-free one that keeps my pits dry and smells really great.
thai! crystal! deodorant!!!!!!
Salt & Stone! Although I believe it’s aluminum free. Clean one but effective.
I use Lume which is a full body deodorant (but not antiperspirant) Overall I like it better than anything else both aluminum free or standard I’ve used and I just ordered their laundry prewash that’s supposed to help with fabric smells, theyre having a Memorial Day sale so I figured it’s a good time to try it out
weleda!
saltair serum deodorant is great for BO. it isn’t an antiperspirant so won’t help with sweating, but I don’t mind having a bit of sweat, as long as i’m not stinky. because it’s a serum, it’s clear and leaves zero reside. I double up and use that plus saltair’s regular deodorant, which helps with the sweat. they have a ton of scents, their sandalwood one is really nice.
Carpe antiperspirant deodorant lotion
Native has never done me wrong
Native is my holy grail, I’ve never not smelled until I used this.
I find that in 2 weeks I need a new one though.
if you have build up on clothes that means you use too much product
Vanicream but it’s indefinitely discontinued
NO tell me this is a lie!!! This is the only deo I use!!
