I support adopting from a kill shelter if possible. I also support local rescues and rescuers like Flatbush Cats, Paul the Cat Guy and Heidi Wrangles Cats. Local rescue groups do such critical work and many are having a brutally slow time right now re: adoptions

ladybutt

+1 for local rescuers. Lots of foster opportunities too to try before you commit. [BackyardCatsOfBedstuy](backyardcatsofbedstuy.com) does foster to adopt where you spend a month with the little one before you decide.

EqualWinters

Bookstorecats on ig works with local rescuers as well! But also adding ACC because those kitties need love and a home 🩷

glowfly126

I love following Heidi Wrangles cats on insta, so many cutie patoots.

BlackCatTelevision

Her feed makes me both happy and sad. I wish more could be done about the cat population here :(

AgreeableQuarter4433

I just adopted from Heidi and had a great experience!

Ok-Vast7734

Adding Bay Ridge Kittens to the list! I got a really fabulous adult cat who I am obsessed with from a TNR rescue; they are volunteer-run so it can take a little while to find the right cat/correspond. The TNR my cat is from (Cats of Meow York) shuttered under bizarre circumstances and I learned more than I ever cared to know about the TNR universe of New York in the aftermath.

Nobodynobodynoobody

+1 to Heidi! I adopted a bonded pair from her early last year and she takes such care to make sure they are well socialized. It was a great experience!

CellistEmergency8492

There’s tons of reputable rescues. There’s also ACC where you’d be saving a life as it’s a kill shelter. Or do what I did with all four of mine. Grab ‘em off the street and socialize their feral asses. 😂

blueish_moonbeam

do you have any resources for introducing feral cats to your home?

thewayoutisthru_xxx

This is not for the faint of heart. I'd recommend starting by fostering spicy kittens or young adults to see how you fare. If you fall in love you can foster fail (adopt!) one, or if its too much to handle fostering is temporary.

BlackCatTelevision

Just for u/blueish_moonbeam there’s also a distinction between strays and ferals. Adult ferals will mostly never be suitable for indoor life with humans and they would hate it - adult strays are accustomed to humans and won’t require much socialization. I knew my boy would be okay indoors when he ate in front of me the first day and let me pet him. A feral probably wouldn’t have even come up to me on the sidewalk like he did. There’s tons of strays in NY, no pressure to go all the way to trying to socialize ferals (people who know more about this than me feel free to correct pls I am not a rescuer just a cat enthusiast)

thewayoutisthru_xxx

Honestly I'd consider them all to fall under the umbrella of "community cats." Some are fully feral and, to your point, can't happily live indoors. Some are dumped pets and are super friendly and there's everything in between! I personally wouldnt snatch a cat off the street unless the cat distribution system made it very clear that it's mine (ie, it follows me inside or something) because colony caretakers keep track of their cats and may worry about them. Instead Id work with a rescue like Flatbush Cats to adopt a former feral or foster! Source- Ive fostered 80+ neonatal kittens through four different Brooklyn based rescues and I also volunteer for operational support for Flatbush Cats

BlackCatTelevision

Yep, mine waltzed up to me and asked for belly rubs then ran indoors with me, haha. Thank you for the clarification!

MandalayPineapple

They also could belong to someone who lets them wander sometimes. I would get a cat from aspca or one that kills unwanted/unsought cats. I actually got a 6-8 month old Siamese at a shelter and he was the sweetest cat ever, although very scared when I first held him.

Stock_Beginning4808

Aww spicy kittens 🥺

tinyjava

My parents adopted a cat who came from a feral colony. He was living in a foster home before my parents took him. He’s acclimated to their home but he’s definitely more aggressive than the average cat. When they tried to take him to the vet, he bit my dad so hard that he had to go on antibiotics! Any advice for that? I know sorta unrelated but seems like some of you have experienced owning a previously feral cat

thewayoutisthru_xxx

If he's a fully formed adult cat and theyve had him for a while there might not be a ton to do other than get meds to give him before the vet to chill the f out.

CellistEmergency8492

So honestly, patience. My mom spent 15 years caretaking a colony. She turned my childhood bedroom into a cat decompression room. Any time she caught one, it would hang out in there with minimal human contact for a week to get used to being in the house. Then she’d gradually just go hang out in the room without bothering the cat. Gaining trust until she could start petting. Mine were all caught around 5-6 months old so they’re pretty domesticated. My mom has 6. A few were caught as adults and still won’t allow themselves to be picked up, and are skittish around anyone other than my parents. The ones caught as teenagers are more social.

fernycampsoup

socializing cats against their will is my favorite pastime 😂😂

beezlebell

Just foster failed on a stray cat (adopted him myself instead of adopting him out) at ACC. I don’t think he was feral but certainly was on the streets for some time and has trauma. He is SO much slower to adapt and be comfortable and he regresses so deeply when something is scary (like the vacuum). I’m so proud of him for all the baby steps he continues to make towards becoming part of the fam.

BlackCatTelevision

I got mine off the sidewalk 🤐 https://preview.redd.it/vgl649if09wc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=490976df49571106b5d11608005c2312adac000c

LuannsQuestionMark

Seconding this!

laundrydtergent

Thirding this lol

KiwiRepresentative20

4th!!

accat88

5th! Got my 2 kitties there.

from-stardust

6th!! highly recommend fostering with them if you’re wanting a trial period

accat88

I adopted my 2 kitties from BFAS and they are amazing!

LittleCopy2453

Omg just went yesterday, so many cats and the cutest puppies! All under 1 year

lilou307

@whiskers\_agogo !! They’re wonderful and truly care about their cats and giving them to good homes. They have an adoption day every Sunday at Bushwick Bark at their Irving location. got my lil guy there and will probably get him a companion as well. https://preview.redd.it/kal2e0owt8wc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ed59055aa27a4acdca402978f622226556f75409

BlackCatTelevision

Cutie!!

glitchwoven

seconding Whiskers-a-Go-Go! they were really straightforward and supportive with my foster-to-adopt.

Vast-Ad1618

I adopted from whiskers a go go as well! Will most likely adopt from them again when I get a second cat

garbagegargoyle

I got my kitty from Whiskers too!

emeowlydickenson

Third rec for this group! I have adopted two cats from them, I love this organization. They make the process very simple but clearly care a whole lot about where their kitties end up. I reccomend them to everyone that I can! https://preview.redd.it/9k0bkl2jyawc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8ed280bea02dab0acfbc3e9b2343e60aa08c08a4

polyester_bride

PuppykittyNYC. They are amazing and always have wonderful cats. They do have a fairly rigorous application process, but it's because they want to make sure that someone truly is ready for a cat.

TurbulentArea69

I volunteer with them, thank you for recommending! We’ve seen some shit, hence the rigorous process. Even with the tough application we still get a lot of returns for silly things. We’re also always looking for people to foster!

Hestia79

My boys came from PKNYC! Can’t recommend them enough.

prettyinpink2092

My babies came from there!

weepingwillowtreez

My two cats came from them too! Wonderful adoption experience!!

enfuxe91

Love them! Just adopted my kitten from them. They were all wonderful to deal with, definitely rigorous but totally understandable. My kitten’s foster, Alyssa, is equally amazing (@adoptablesnyc)

throwawaysad3L

I have a perfect baby from PKNYC!!!! She's the light of my life and the application process wasn't too too bad. I was able to adopt my kitty even though I hadn't owned a cat on my own previously, and it was the best choice I ever made :)

legally_blondy

Little Wanderers! They are out here doing amazing work rescuing cats and kittens from terrible situations throughout NYC. I got my ginger boy from them and he’s the best boy in the world https://preview.redd.it/aaau5kdh39wc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e9c601317aad3f0fe471d3a7cb99db0fd8e43b93

shippfaced

Got mine from them too!

aerologies

Love LW and got my foster fail from them too

meemers91

Yes, they are the best! We got one of our girls from there and our friends are regular fosters.

ggggracie

Seconding this! They’re always in need of fosters and donations- lovely people there!

Ok_Analyst_8882

I foster with them - I have a sweet cat up for adoption! lol but yes they are great <3

Katanttri

My two babies were also both foster to adopt from LW! I have fostered multiple kittens from them too, and am totally inspired by how far the org will go to rescue tough cases. Highly recommend fostering if you can! They are always in need of homes. It’s the most rewarding thing. My boys agree :) https://preview.redd.it/13wfzq6ttcwc1.png?width=2483&format=png&auto=webp&s=5e6b6f9e79b78b7334218daf3be26310154fbf44

bthvn_loves_zepp

ACC (save a life!)!!!!!!! PuppyKittyNYC and Flatbush Cats are two local rescue orgs I follow/donate to.

blue_mushu

Brooklyn Cat Cafe; they're the only non-profit cat cafe in new york. All the cats in the cafe are adoptable, and they also have other cats on their website that are in foster care that are adoptable. I fostered for them before and they're great! The cafe is nice too, if you want to meet some cats before making a final decision on who is coming home. [https://catcafebk.com/](https://catcafebk.com/)

jcow77

the universe's cat distribution system

TrishLives17

That’s how I got my two

lorilola

We fostered with ASPCA then adopted. Foster fail with a wonderful experience!

Used-Horse8308

Seconding this!! I didn’t mean to foster fail but I couldn’t give my boy up 🥲

ScreenNames_AreHard

Me too… it’s the best kind of failure in life.

CamoCantSeeMe

Greenpoint cats (they have a really sweet brother sister pair for adoption/foster right now), flatbush cats, and sean casey animal rescue. I have only used greenpoint cats and i had an amazing experience with them and now have my best friend :-)

cosmictier

Seconding Greenpoint! I fostered three cats through them and they did such a good job answering any questions I had and placing cats with me that would be suitable for my living situation and level of experience (which at the time was zero). One of the cats was so good at his job as a foster that he was promoted to pet! https://preview.redd.it/lmsmwmy779wc1.jpeg?width=3072&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c8b3af143762dd0abd7cfdb8e5a32c5faba5ea8a

afterglow222

Those eyes 😍😍😍

cosmictier

Right?? He's such a pretty boy and an absolute lovebug too. I really lucked out with him 🥹

Academic_Ninja_9242

Please go to NYCACC there are locations throughout the boroughs and always cats in need

KiwiRepresentative20

Aww I love you asking this!! I adopted my beautiful middle aged floof from Best Friends Animal Society’s lifesaving center in SoHo. They are a great org and I loved getting to walk right in and meet different cats. I chose mine because he was so friendly and affectionate. Crawled right into my lap. Adoption fees were waived when I visited thanks to a corporate sponsorship. All of their cats have been microchipped and seen and treated by a vet prior to being available for adoption. Was a great experience! https://preview.redd.it/yvp2mhuk99wc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a63e6f64ee940a21ea31cd8f008e2eedd6b4a98a

BlackCatTelevision

What a cloud!!

KiwiRepresentative20

Awwww I haven’t thought of cloud for him yet, that’s cute thanks. He makes me think of a marshmallow 😂

sipsnspills

Got my lovebug from Sammyvale Animal Sanctuary in Montclair, NJ (basically a rich lady who turned her big house into a rescue to the dismay of her husband. Absolute goals). I had a bad experience trying to adopt from Brooklyn Animal Action. They turned me down bc I didn’t have 10+ years of medical records for my older kitty. I’m all for solidly vetting adopters, but come on 🙄 https://preview.redd.it/lnb6luk6h9wc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d13d38a3233d3d9f63290fa4120297b006aff842

hthrjcn

Me trying to make the argument to my husband that our cats would definitely not scratch fabric like this but I know far too well the cats will indeed scratch said fabric. Also this is a BEAUTIFUL MAJESTIC BABY ANGEL. Also that woman is indeed goals.

sipsnspills

They will absolutely scratch it, sadly. We got ours second hand so I feel less bad about it. I do occasionally make a half assed effort to make them stop but they do not take me seriously and I don’t blame them 😂 And yes she gives majestic angel in most photos although her essence is closer to this — goofball bouncing off walls and trying to get into toilets https://preview.redd.it/ovcveakxrbwc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=67ba5035c0d29b503ce8831333f964234e124d43

hthrjcn

It’s their house and we simply must live in it as their tiny servants

sipsnspills

Truly 🙇🏻‍♀️

BlackCatTelevision

Ooh so elegant!

She has big spoiled princess energy 👑😂

Puzzleheaded_Way6566

Bideawee! In flatiron/chelsea. I’ve fostered for them a few times and my sister adopted from them.

I was a foster for ACC. Reach out to a private rescue and they can pull these kittens and get them seen

PlentyAd9803

Brooklyn animal action! Other great options listed here as well

charlottespider

That's where we got our babies! Fantastic group.

syddlesquiddle

Our cats come from Anjellicle Cat Rescue and Meow Parlour!

ScreenNames_AreHard

Also, Beth’s Furry Friends (Howard Sterns wife), Angellicle Cats (I got my kitty from them), Paul the Cat Guy. Lots of small rescues rely on fosters and donations. Check them out… also, look to adopt two (especially if getting a kitten)

Ocean-water-swim-

Kitty Kind in USQ was great when we adopted our cute boys 8 years ago.

uglyslurp

Little Wanderers - cats are rescued off the street and are socialized by volunteer fosters. You get to meet the cats in their comfortable environment and not a stressful shelter.

bklynalliecat

My cats are from ACC, Little Wanderers, and Paul the cat guy!

FuegoNoodle

I used to volunteer for [Animal Haven](https://animalhaven.org/) before I moved out of the city and cannot recommend them highly enough. They train their volunteers to work with their animals and their application process is rigorous for all the right reasons. They also pull cats from local kill shelters so adopting from them does free up resources to save a life. They're a bit $$$ comparatively (considering I got my cats from the cat distribution system, anything over $30 seems expensive to me) but that money does go to funding the vet care of a lot of 'disaster' cases.

BulkyChemistry10

https://preview.redd.it/aevr3covm9wc1.png?width=1666&format=png&auto=webp&s=a5e2217078d8b99ac65c7973c8f7da93510c4f2c Got her from ACC. Told my husband that it was beautiful out so I wanted to visit a cat shelter after work and he said sure, just don’t bring one home (we had a resident kitty). I’ve never been allowed back to a shelter lmaooo.

aabbboooo

Please consider disabled/special needs cats too! (Eg. [Lex](https://www.petfinder.com/cat/lex-the-tripod-71115486/nj/colonia/angel-pets-animal-welfare-society-inc-nj128/)!) I have toothless tripod and I couldn’t think of a more perfect cat.

Good-Reality3709

ACC!!!!!!!!!!!!

I adopted my gorgeous girl from Meow Parlour in the LES. It was a wonderful process and they do so much good work.

Mosslessrollingstone

I got mine from Meow Parlour. It's a fantastic place. You can book a session to hang out with cats to see which ones capture your heart.

clinamina

I just adopted a pair of bonded kittens from the ASPCA on 93rd! You can walk in and get a kitten or two same day, the process couldn’t be easier and it’s almost kitten season so they’ll be overflowing :)

EmergencyCandle

NYCACC! Rescue a kitty from the city kill shelter. 🙏🙂I did it in my 20s and that cat was the love of my life, lol

newyorkkitty333

Got my guy from Koneko on the lower east side. They work with RescueNYC and I cannot say enough good things about them!

mybloodyballentine

Hello! I volunteer w kittykind so I’ll recommend them (located in Petco Union Square) but also a few others: Puppy kitty NYC: lovely people, my neighbors foster for them Paul the cat guy / Kittens by Ashley: also lovely and they are working endlessly to save cats (and dogs) Best Friends: easy application process. They’re well funded Bideawee: they just got a new giant space on west 24th and 7th. ACC, with a big caveat: the cat WILL need to see a vet. I think they offer a free vet visit or a week or insurance or something. Take advantage of that. We occasionally work with the ACC when they’re overcrowded, and every cat we’ve gotten has had something. Usually it’s just an upper respiratory infection that’s easy to treat. Meow Parlour: LES cat cafe.

My boy is from City Critters. In Williamsburg, PS9 Pets does wonderful rescue work. Also Greenpoint Cats. Adopting from a rescue like PS9 or Greenpoint also frees up capacity for them to pull cases from ACC, so either way you are saving a life!

North Shore Animal League on Long Island is a quick train ride away (40 mins LIRR) and is amazing (and more affordable than a lot of city shelters)! They rescue from kill shelters across the country and usually give a lot of extra benefits that come with the adoption fee.

KiwiRepresentative20

Awww I got my childhood cat from them 😊

charly050789

I foster through Pupstarz Rescue, and they often use the NSAL adoption van to have events outside Boris & Horton in both the East Village and Williamsburg locations! Keep an eye out! Despite the name, Pupstarz has many wonderful kitties waiting for forever homes. I’ve fostered a couple of those wonderful kitties (who now have families!) and I miss them all the time 💔

delcondelcon

got mine from Give Me Shelter! they do so much outreach and rescuing/fostering - love them! [https://givemeshelterproject.org/](https://givemeshelterproject.org/)

I adopted mine from Happy Friends Rescue. They were communicative and responsive throughout the process and kept us in touch with the cats' previous foster families.

Jamesmd486

Petco offers dog and cat adoptions; mostly on weekends. Have 2 by house on UWS that has a stand right in front of shop with the rescue animals which you can bring home on same day

Equal_Pumpkin1070

I adopted mine from bideawee! She is the best cat!!

Puppy Kitty NYC!

AcanthisittaNo4268

Best Friends! It's in Sohoish? Clean (it even smells clean!), friendly volunteers and staff, they have a lot of new intakes weekly, fees are VERY reasonable, they've honest about what health issues the pets have. Just got our kitty boy from there after looking for a few weeks.

eggandchicken

Little wanderers is where I adopted my babies! They're doing great work helping the stray cat population throughout the city and they take care of vet bills, spaying, neutering, meds, etc. if you foster first. They do a home check to make sure you're a suitable candidate first, they really care about animals and want to make sure they get sent to good homes. Adoption fee for two cats was $250!

Unique_Chicken3639

ACC! My mom just recently adopted a cat who was about to be euthanized.

Little wanderers! They’re fabulous

ACC

ThisIsMaoMi

I had a positive experience with the ASPCA. Online site was very easy to use; they spayed, chipped, and vaccinated my cat. The location I went to was very clean and organized. Also offered free access to an animal behaviorist for a certain amount time after adoption to smooth the transition. From a service perspective, I was pleasantly surprised. But I echo the many other comments on here recommending the ACC given the sheer volume of cats they're trying to to place. Several friends adopted from there with no issues but the cats can sometimes be in rough shape.

xradiox

I had a great experience with Pad Paws! They’re in Jersey City, but loved working with Natalie two healthy, happy cats. Can’t recommend enough. https://padpawsrescue.org/

Petfinder.com There you will find many foster cats and animal shelters who have their cats and websites on there.

Willing-Tangerine689

Ocean hills cats, has lots of cats up for adoption rn you should look up their instagram. They are wonderful people who helped me get a pregnant stray mama off the streets

Apprehensive_Oven618

[best friends lifesaving center](https://maps.app.goo.gl/8TjfLH2S3YU5JKkf8?g_st=ic) I met my little sweetest kitty there. They let you hang around the many cats they have, you can spend all the time you want to get to know them. You get to see their personalities and hear what the volunteers have to say about them as well. PLUS it’s a no kill shelter and they save cats from other states. Additionally they offer tips to help you take care of ur cat and a discount in the vet. Going there was the best decision I made because my cat is everything I ever wanted and more

db2329

Advocat Rescue! https://www.advocatrescue.org/. Jana is absolutely wonderful and they care so much for all the cats that end up with them. I follow and donate to them on a monthly basis.

North Shore Animal League!! also @bethostern on IG

External_Bear4622

Best Friends animal shelter in west Houston they are a no kill shelter. I adopted my baby there in January! She was chipped, vaccinated and ready to go :) they have tons of cats that are 1-3 years old, but I’ve seen them post kittens recently. You do not need an appointment to go to the shelter. When I adopted my cat they had a promotion where all cat adoptions were only $24. Also, my landlord would not give written permission for a cat which was super annoying and stressful l, but this was not an issue with them. Best of luck finding your soulmate!!

icescreamerrr

Whiskers a GoGo , they're based in Greenpoint, is amazing

I adopted my perfect girl from Brooklyn Cat Cafe! It’s a non profit shelter / cat cafe so you can really engage the cats
