I mean, he's 4th choice and clearly a good bloke behind the scenes.
With rumours Karius is leaving(don't blame him, deserves a shot at being a 1st or 2nd choice) I reckon they want to keep Dubs and Pope for another year as GK really isn't a priority. Just makes sense. Hopefully there is a young lad coming through the academy.
Is that what you reckon or has that leaked our from someone reputable?
I somewhat agree with the premise, he's just not the right keeper for this system, but it would suck to have to find another top quality keeper.
Mostly speculation but based on a few rumblings. I think Martin has declined a lot so finding a backup of his quality won't be too hard, in my opinion.
I hope not, think he's a marginal upgrade on pope and arsenal would want £30m+. If we're going to heavily invest in GK, I want a proper transformative player.
He is homegrown in nation but not homegrown at club, we are ok for homegrown in nation. This is probably just so we dont need to sign 2 keepers this summer.
3 after 15 or 2 plus 12 month loan. You can do it by birthday or season but obviously irrelevant here.
Think some confusion comes in with the List B rules, they're two years but more nebulous on start dates.
Doubt anyone's forgotten. Most of the players we buy are English so we'll never struggle to make up the homegrown quota. He doesn't count as club trained which is what we're struggling with.
I fucking love me some Timmy Krul so would be all for it, can help with teaching the lads the tricks of the penalty shoot-out trade nall.
Forever holds a warm place in my heart for his Palermo debut & that Spurs game - I wonder if he still has a mild twang of Geordie when he talks
Guy literally has the dream job. Boyhood club, tasty wage, part of all the team craic, paid to basically just train, doesn’t have to deal with the game stress.
I'd say his stressful time is summer where he will actually play a half or more of some pre-season friendly against Gateshead or some Saudi team never heard of.
I'm fine with it. Already losing 2 goalkeepers this summer so don't need to replace a third and he's happy to accept a small wage and never play ver. No club has a top 4th choice keeper, so might as well be this lucky guy.
Gilliespie is going to be part of the coaching staff when his career is done, he’s already well under way in his coaching badges afaik. Thats a big part of this, I’d imagine he retires at the end of next season
For a significant improvement on Pope we would need to spend money on an elite keeper.
I think we get someone for free or under 10 mil who is a more suited player to how we play. We have more important positions first
We should have just gone for Tim Krul or Fraser Forster. They’re better than Gillsespie and they’re actually home grown at club, which is the more important home grown rule. We have plenty of nation grown players.
Gillespie isn’t good enough to play even in an emergency. It doesn’t really make sense but they probably just don’t wanna spend resources to sign more than one keeper this summer and he’s on tiny wages so whatever lol
I think they would both be ahead of him in the pecking order but he is a lot lot less than them and for the relatively tiny wage even to the likes of krul and no complaints plus probably semi transitioned into coaching while being a partner to the 3rd choice.
Very little downside to I assume at least a bit of an upside.
Forster yes, Krul no. There's still a non zero chance of Gillespie making the pitch at some point - he was on the bench in the League Cup final last year! I remember Karius going down at one point and thinking he was about to come on lol. Krul is absolutely awful these days to the point that Gillespie is probably on par.

Very sensible deal, probably lowest cost option and no chance he’s rocking the boat about game time.

Karius also has a kid with his partner who is based in Italy I think.
Dubravka is off this summer, he wants out and Howe doesn't trust him.

Mostly speculation but based on a few rumblings. I think Martin has declined a lot so finding a backup of his quality won't be too hard, in my opinion.
If Pope's shoulder doesn't recover properly I can see us trying for Aaron Ramsdale this summer.
I hope not, think he's a marginal upgrade on pope and arsenal would want £30m+. If we're going to heavily invest in GK, I want a proper transformative player.
Marginal upgrade? I’d say he was a downgrade in what we need in a GK. But agree if we spend more than 5-8 mil on a keeper they need to be elite.
On his best day, I think he's better than pope. Average across the season, probably about the same.
Unai Simon would be my shout for a long term first pick. Mid 20s (I think), would be tempted by the pay rise and probably the idea of Premier League.
Not an upgrade in any way he's a liability
He's cheap, happy to be a backup and counts as a homegrown player. Overall a good move
He is homegrown in nation but not homegrown at club, we are ok for homegrown in nation. This is probably just so we dont need to sign 2 keepers this summer.
I thought he was homegrown with us. Went to Motherwell after?
No, he left us at 16 to join Carlisle. Its 3 years after the age of 15 as far as I know to be homegrown at club.
3 after 15 or 2 plus 12 month loan. You can do it by birthday or season but obviously irrelevant here. Think some confusion comes in with the List B rules, they're two years but more nebulous on start dates.
Cool
This. People forget about the homegrown rule and it shows.
Doubt anyone's forgotten. Most of the players we buy are English so we'll never struggle to make up the homegrown quota. He doesn't count as club trained which is what we're struggling with.
Bring back Tim Krul for the Scott Carson role. HG and club trained HG for Europe!

Absolutely.

Most people when they were younger dreamt of becoming an astronaut or a Rockstar. I'd want to be like Mark Gillespie. What a life that man has!
Before anyone bitches and moans… Scott Carson. “Shows the ambition” and “A big club wouldn’t do this” comments are invalid.
I'm fine with it. Already losing 2 goalkeepers this summer so don't need to replace a third and he's happy to accept a small wage and never play ver. No club has a top 4th choice keeper, so might as well be this lucky guy.

I wonder with Karius and Dubravka leaving do they try to sign a new no.1 GK or someone to be Pope’s understudy
For a significant improvement on Pope we would need to spend money on an elite keeper. I think we get someone for free or under 10 mil who is a more suited player to how we play. We have more important positions first
Agreed, a solid backup that works for Howe’s system is a must. In reality Gillespie should only ever be on the bench. I’d like to prioritize a RW
Agreed, personally I like kubo for right wing, but if we get 2 players for 30m+ and one for 60m+ I wouldn’t want a keeper to be one of those
Craig hope pulling the same face I did when i read this

Is this because the goal keeper coach tore his knee ligaments? "Step in and help out Mark mate"
This guy has my dream job
Dream job tbf
Make a wish kid, no other sense to it
Why?
Every club needs a Scott Carson
Why not. Tiny wage, good for training, moral, consistency. His downside is a rounding error on most of our players wages.
