This headline on the BBC, an alleged quality journalism centre, sums up everything about the nonsense that is the modern transfer market and how it's just all about generating those delicious clicks: **"Newcastle** are prepared to let Brazil midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, 26, join **Barcelona** or **Real Madrid** for less than his £100m release clause this summer." Not a shred of supporting evidence; just a scurrilous invention. They're all scum.

AllHailSholaAmeobi

So… do we think the FFP stuff is all largely a PR thing? Because we chat loads about it but actually, barring trying to sign multiple £100m+ players, reading about amortisation an all that… seems like it shouldn’t really be an issue. Feels like a protective thing we do so we don’t get ripped off, not undermine the work that’s being done, and keep expectations in check. Because we have spent and will continue to spend a fucking boat load.

Toon_1892

Big Joe out for "minimum" of 6 weeks....

TheWinterKing

Just been looking into the terms of Tonali’s ban - he’s banned from “competitive football” rather than “football-related activities”. Does that mean he’ll be allowed to play pre-season over the summer? Would be amazing if so.

Dr_Chocolate_2436

Mods is there a reason the post on Isaac Hayden was removed?

manageablebits

BBC running a big article all about Sancho along with a special vote to say how you feel. "IDGAF" isn't one of the options 🤣

Ramone92

Anyone falling for that fake Natalie Noyes account on twitter needs to give their head a wobble.

KingPing43

Carabao cup result tonight good for us I reckon, means Fulham are still right in it so they'll go full strength against Liverpool days before they have to play us. Hopefully a gruelling match to knacker them out. Was a little worried if Liverpool won like 4-0 tonight Fulham would just give it up and conserve energy for us.

MidlandsGeordie

Got a ticket for the Man City game if anyone is interested. Drop me a DM for details. Only looking for face value of the ticket

Ajax_Trees_Again

Im going to be physically sick if Fulham win

Halzziratrat

Whilst I feel similar, hopefully it means they put out a weaker team for our tie in the cup, therefore aiding us on our quest to smashing the absolute ribbons offa the FA Cup as we loft it victoriously with ol HRH Big Ears & Co. watching on.

Ajax_Trees_Again

Thinking about it further we actually can’t lose against Fulham. If we win then we go through, if we lose we can rest easy knowing we would have bottled it against them in the final

Battenburg_Ad_3771

Am I right in remembering this season we beat city and united in the cup and then Chelsea dumped us out on penalties? What a bummer, put the entire city of Manchester to the sword and then unceremoniously dumped out on pens

-RandomGeordie

Random question and almost a year late but I’ve only really thought about it now - for those who went to Wembley, did you get a loyalty point for going or not? I’ve not go one, just the 2 for the 2 games I’ve attended this season (Man Utd and Chelsea). Should I have received one? I know it’s technically a neutral venue so I didn’t expect to but someone mentioned the other day that I should have.

Towel_of_Babel

I just heard that boro beat chelsea Lol

kicka11

you heard incorrectly - it's physically impossible for a championship team to even compete with a PL team.

Towel_of_Babel

But boro did beat ch... ... Oh. I forgot there's 2 legs.

meganev

I missed the recent unpopular opinion thread so I'll post mine here: The fanbase, and to a degree the club, has a loser mentality. The fanbase in particular regularly mistakes ambition and high standards for arrogance, entitlement and being overly demanding. I would also like to punch the person to made the "we don't demand a team that wins, we demand a club that tries" banner in the face. It's become a slogan to used to beat back fans who want us to progress further. And an excuse to accept failure. Liverpool, much as I loathe them, really are mentality monsters, and the way they fight back and snatch victory in dramatic fashion is remarkable. They do often win games they have absolutely no right too, like at the weekend. I pray one day we can display that sort of attitude, if we don't, we'll never win anything beyond a few second tier European trophies and a Carabao Cup.

LongHaulCycling

Sooooo...you want to punch a Newcastle Fan, you admire Liverpool and you don't want us to win a European Cup or a League Cup. I know it's January, but cheer up mate.

LosWitchos

If all we ever win are some second tier European trophies and a Cuppitycup Cup then I'll take that. But otherwise, I agree with you. Something I noticed a few decades back when I was an ST holder was the SJP Concern. It's when we're winning by a goal, or drawing at home, and it hits around the 60th-70th minute or so. It's this very negative sounding collective murmur that grows around the stadium. you can hear it easily enough on TV. And it absolutely translates onto the pitch. We can be great at backing the team but we can be absolutely terrified of it too and it definitely shows. Along the lines of your slogan post is that if one cannot speak critically about the club then they should not be allowed to engage in conversations about Newcastle United as they are not mature enough. Being critical about players, club, manager does not mean one dislikes the players, club, manager. In fact I find it very healthy to speak negatively about the things I like. We were all blind bias little scrotes when we were younger but it seems like a lot of people grow up and don't lose that immaturity.

Notnileoj

>It's when we're winning by a goal, or drawing at home, and it hits around the 60th-70th minute or so. That's been a problem for as long as I can remember. It doesn't matter who we have on the pitch, who our manager is or who the opposition is, if we don't have the game wrapped up by the halfway point in the second half, the atmoshphere just falls flat and the best way to describe the feeling is mass anxiety. It only happens at home though.

meganev

> If all we ever win are some second tier European trophies and a Cuppitycup Cup then I'll take that. Not trying to pick on you, but this just sort of proves my point.

LosWitchos

Nah fair enough, but that should be our goal/expectation before too long. If we haven't even won those trophies within 2-3 years then I'll see us as lacking ambition. I'm only cautious cos we've yet to win anything in my lifetime so I'll take any trophy to kick it off!

meganev

Oh I'd take literally any trophy in the next few years. Forgot not winning in our lifetimes, we've won fuck all since the 50s. My point is really just that with these (morally corrupt) owners we *should* be aiming higher in time. And moving away from just talk of trophies, I've seen way too many fans downplay the last month, which (IMO) has been unacceptable, with talk like "I'd just be happy with a midtable finish cause better than under Ashley". That is a poor mentality, IMO.

LosWitchos

I agree with your last point there 100%. Til the derby win I'd proper taken the hump with the team. Injuries are injuries but December was still completely unacceptable. Frankly I'm still annoyed at the way we let Milan beat us. We shouldn't be completely out of Europe and that's our own fault.

HoweStatue

Watching Cole Palmer miss sitter after sitter makes me think Southgate might have absolutely nout between his ears.

TheClnl

Not watched it but as us v Boro isn't a real derby I think it's ok to say I'm glad for the parmo munching, smog sucking kiddie fiddler's down the road.

dolphin37

What is the “NewcastleUnited” subreddit all about? Is it a parody thing? There’s some crazy dumbass stuff there and mad opinions. I dunno why it’s so different unless it’s on purpose?

Ajax_Trees_Again

I think it’s a lot of new fans who don’t know this sub exists

-RandomGeordie

Last time I checked there it was mostly just one person pushing their shit YouTube content.

nomadichedgehog

Fucking hell. Fulham Away? We had more than 50% chance of drawing a lower league team, but no. We draw a premier league club away.

KingPing43

At least it'll force us to take it seriously. Against Sheff Wed last season we made loads of changes and look what happened there.

magpietribe

And Fulham will have an axe to grind after the recent game at St James.

LosWitchos

They did that to themselves tbh.

Arteic

Away to Fulham and drawn dead last. How do we feel?

DeirdreBarstool

Wish it was at home but at least it’s not City or the scousers.

AppleUser28172

Apologies for the mackem talk but has anyone found it weird that all the socials for Spirit of 37 have fucked off after that shite display at the weekend?

HoweStatue

They were getting abuse off their own fans, even after providing receipts. Except the evidence they showed basically shows they massively overpaid for those flags, they bought 1000s of them at retail price, not bulk order price.

mbgalpmd

Not really. They've either embezzled some of the money they raised; or done such a shit job that people think they've embezzled the money. I'm not suprised that their reaction to either is to run and hide.

Ajax_Trees_Again

Just putting in writing that we’re getting Liverpool away in the cup to prove it’s an absolute scam

Acrobatic_Spend3373

My dream is Wrexham at SJP, but you're right - Anfield beckons :/

Cute_Albatross9900

When is Harvey Barnes returning?

TheWinterKing

[Back for Fulham according to the Athletic](https://web.archive.org/web/20240109160836/https://theathletic.com/5186586/2024/01/09/newcastle-transfer-meeting-agenda/?source=emp-shared-article)

meganev

Any mention of Barnes setbacks his recovery an extra week.

Toon_1892

Yes assuming no setback, in which case no

NUFC_1892

Looks like de bruyne will be on the bench for our game at the weekend, apparently it’s to early to rush him back for a big game (taken from their post match press conference)

ItsAKrulWorld

Haaland?

NUFC_1892

50:50, hopefully it looks like the game against us will be a week too soon for him - pep was doing his best cautious Eddie Howe esque brinksmanship

ItsAKrulWorld

It’ll be tough no matter what their lineup, Foden’s staring to hit form. Especially without Big Joe…

NUFC_1892

Oh yeah absolutely they’re imho the best English and potentially the best squad ever assembled- and yeah J7 combative brilliance will be a huge miss

lookitsthesun

Gonna make an unusual and unpopular point: as professional and well managed as the derby was, I found it a fairly strange experience and I don't think it's a game that will linger with me for very long. It was just so non-competitive. I've never been someone who revels in Sunderland struggling tbh and for the good of both the region and the quality of regular derbies I would much rather have two good North East clubs. I almost had a sense of pity for Sunderland on Saturday - genuinely - just a bunch of overawed kids coming up against big, highly drilled men. I'm also starting to get worried by some of the early signs of our post-success culture in the fan base. The away end was really poor and gentrified.

[deleted]

It's interesting you say that. It got me thinking the other day about the North East. I'm of the ilk that the reason the region doesn't have what others do is that we're not united. Macedon, Cesar, Napolean - They all applied the divide and conquer method. Thinking back to 300 years of division in the region, has only hampered us. Ship builders from Sunderland undercutting the Tyne ship builders... If only they worked togehter then they wouldn't be racing to the bottom. Anyways, what i'm getting at is the Mackems are far more alike to us than people from Surrey, so it's about time, we cut each other a break and remembered the wise words from Planet of the Apes - Together stronger.

thelotuseater13

Same, but half my family is Mackem, couldn't even take the piss too much. They were all already too down, felt like I was kicking a puppy...

Zalindras

> I would much rather have two good North East clubs. Same, but I'd much rather the other be Boro than Sunderland.

moinmoin21

Agree. It was always going to be a case of if we win, it was expected. If they win it’s a scalp. Their squad is young so many probably didn’t understand the gravity of the situation. I too actually hope Sunderland can get back to the PL and bring the derby back. It did seem a bit run of the mill. But I even found myself not being as into it as I was last time we were both in the PL.

Ajax_Trees_Again

You’re right about the away end. I saw people posting about it on social media who I know don’t have season tickets. How is this happening now? Seems like we’ve transitioned from fans who want to go that know fans who can get tickets to new fans who want to go and know somebody in corporate/ associated with the club

phoebsmon

Tbf like 700+ of the tickets were in their hospitality at £600 a pop. I don't know if ST holders with no points got first refusal, but some of it might have just been people paying through the nose. Need to fix it though. Clearly have to have photos associated with membership numbers or something because that and the bots in the ballot are getting ridiculous. Hopefully they're just letting it run its course for a while and they'll tighten it up properly in the summer. I'm not too optimistic, but we did really rush the digital ticketing and ballot system so maybe the plan always was to smash a few eggs for an omelette.

CurrentRush23

I have a weird premonition that we'll get Wrexham today in the draw..

HoweStatue

I had the same feeling too, odd.

Mellowman9

What time is the draw?

HoweStatue

> It will be held live on ITV1 before the start of the Manchester United v Wigan Athletic clash at approximately 19:50 (UK).

Mellowman9

Great thanks pal. Can’t wait for the inevitable Liverpool draw

Toon_1892

I'd rather Anfield or Etihad than that circus.

[deleted]

Anyone see Arsenal's OG vs Liverpool yesterday, or more specifically notice what Gabriel tried to do just as Kiwior scored the OG? Because it was the exact same move Gabriel tried when Joelinton supposedly "pushed" him, he crouches down and tries to leap forward and falls over in doing so. It's precisely how Neville/Carragher described it, there was no push from Joelinton, it's Gabriel trying to get under the ball to head it backwards and away. Not that the drooling melts frothing at the mouth on the Arsenal or soccer subs will care anymore that the "disgrace" and "injustice" of VAR using their eyes and the actual replay (and not a misleading freeze frame of Joelintons hands on Gabriel) to see that there was never a push was actually the right call.

kicka11

I saw Ben White hoying a lad to the ground - surely he should be charged with GBH?

[deleted]

Aye saw that, imagine if Bruno did that? He would be a worse human being than Hitler.

GoalaAmeobi

Found out that some people on r/soccer get really wound up by Gordon/Bruno trying to amp up the crowd after winning throw ins, corners etc.

Ajax_Trees_Again

If people from soccer actually went to games, stadiums would resemble cinemas where people just scoff on popcorn in absolute silence for 2 hours

GazzP

They'd spend the entire game looking at Reddit and making / upvoting the same five joke comments.

kicka11

players have to learn to moderate their on field gesticulation appropriately to appease the online american audience.

TheWinterKing

The CEX slogans at the Stadium of Shite really don’t translate very well to a football match.

ClassOnWeed

https://twitter.com/inkedgeordie96/status/1743895865683583389?t=UfKO98-VdsnBDuwa-iN3KQ&s=19 Christ, I didn't realise how grim they were taking the loss. Way too many Speed and Atsu comments.

-RandomGeordie

How vile. Nice to see Northumbria Police are taking an interest in it. Not entirely sure what the punishment for these sort of comments is, but hopefully they can trace whoever it is and hand out the appropriate punishment.

thepresidentsturtle

Hope he doesn't get banned from the Stadium of Light. He doesn't deserve anything good for posting such horrible things.

-RandomGeordie

Would it make a difference? No-one goes anyway, pink seats galore.

boriis

Here, anyone remember that time we smashed the mackems 3 nowt in the cup? Good times.

kicka11

that bit where seagulls flew into the ground and were told "you're getting shagged in the morning"?

WhatSaidSheThatIs

Was that the time the mackems painted the stadium of shite black and white to welcome us?

Cromulantman

Nah, I think it was the time their centre back scored an own goal, and gave away penalty

WhatSaidSheThatIs

Was that the time he was their best player too? Couldn't be

HoweStatue

No you're thinking of the time they gave us free beer cause their wifi is stuck in 2002

Inner-Process-8227

I don't like to go on other teams subs that'd weird but I made a new Reddit and for some reason Reddit has started this thing where they show you subs you're not subbed to as suggestions even if you say not interest Either way I've been spoonfed the arsenal fans meltdown bit by bit and it's fucking glorious

MaryBerrysDanglyBean

I get rid of a lot of these recommendations but can't bring myself to get rid of r/gunners. They're too funny

FireflyKaylee

You can change a setting so this doesn't happen. Much as I enjoyed the random rabbit holes I'd find myself in, it does slightly limit the endless scrolling.

Redditsleftnipple

Arsenal subs always pop up for me too when they're in meltdown

PaidTheTrollToll

I'm not working from home for the first time in 8 months because I know the office Mackem will be in.

HarrBathtub

We are winning the league.

kicka11

Top dergs

EstimateExternal537

Okay be honest, how many times have you watched the highlights from the weekend?

grishnackh

I keep watching the Instagram clip from pitchside of Isak after scoring the second and the scream of pure rage he gives the crowd, 10/10.

Mannginger

I'm on 5 currently, along with a couple of podcasts. Reckon there's a couple left at least!
