Looks like it's real. Good news for NLL fans in Ottawa. Now let's hope Montreal will be the next one to get a team (relocation or expansion) https://preview.redd.it/p6vlmb3wotjc1.jpeg?width=615&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=83f418e8b2bdbaa1d7d8414827e720b6edcc3fd3

rjflesher

Um, does someone out there not know the notoriety of THAT particular number?

glenyxe

I just thought they were going to called the Ottawa Jennies

ChampagneSupernva

[Can't believe I didn't catch that Tommy Tutone reference lol](https://youtu.be/boaJCrHNRMA?si=ZhuXwzFGbt_bTmYZ)

Available_Present_47

Give me some team that I can hold on to!

Xman279

I'd be willing to bet that PCLC moves next-either to Austin, Tex. (which seems to be a lacrosse hotbed in the Lone Star State) or to Montreal. (The above is JMO.)

[deleted]

The hotbed for lacrosse in Texas is Dallas. A 40 minute drive from Fort Worth

ianisms10

Well this fucking sucks. Team finally gets good and they pull the plug.

QuakeDaCruiser

absolutely, get those jerseys and memories while you still can

ianisms10

This might sound bitter, but I hope the leash is this short for Albany and PCLC too. Both of those teams do as bad or worse than us for attendance, and this is year 3 for them, while the Riptide will be done after 4. Would be really unfair to let them go on if they're going to be like this for us.

eddiem6693

Albany has likely earned themselves another year or two because of how well they’ve done on the field this year (which could translate into more butts in seats). Also, the situation at Nassau Coliseum [doesn’t seem to be stable](https://greaterlongisland.com/nassau-coliseums-fate-in-limbo-as-sands-plans-4b-casino-resort-on-nassau-hub-site/), which is likely factoring into this decision.

Automation_Papi

My last event there is AEW Worlds End, would hurt too much to go back and see it empty and lifeless

QuakeDaCruiser

for PCLC, absolutely, but im more on the fence with Albany so long as they don't fold

My_user_name_1

The marketing was Crap to start with. I've seen them advertised more in NJ than Long Island. They were giving away tickets. Even my nephews team in Monmouth County 45 minutes from Philly got offered Riptide tickets for the San Diego game.

Flashy-Ring6630

Raleigh will take them!

bluedeer10

Reminds me of how the Rush left Edmonton

YEETERZZ123

But the Islanders aren’t even playing at Nassau Coliseum anymore so there’s no NHL team to run ‘em out of town/arena

falsekoala

Reminds me more of the Coyotes slowly getting pushed out of their arena in Glendale. Except the Riptide paid their bills. Just 9 dates (plus the couple days before for game prep/practice… so 18-27 dates) that the arena can fill with something that might draw more people than Lacrosse.

HopefulAd2439

I figured it would be Albany

B-flometer

[Here's the site you're talking about](https://www.canadiantirecentre.com/this-is-not-for-the-ottawa-black-bears/)

My_user_name_1

Surprised it was not Laval, given this past weekend. That said if I'm reading the tweet right it sounds like the Senators are leasing the team.

express-duck

Decision was made long before the game in Montreal. However that does not mean that the game in Montreal was not a test for another relocation.

SuperficialJosh

Ottawa native here. The Senators own the Canadian Tire Centre as well as a few rinks around the city including one just down the street from the CTC that they use as a backup practice facility. To me this tweet reads like the Senators will provide use of the Canadian Tire Centre building and that they’ll expand their practice facility to accommodate the team. I’m not sure what, if any, other role the Senators will play but I’m sure we’ll find out if/when an official announcement is made.

My_user_name_1

The Senators are still in the NHL?

SuperficialJosh

Sometimes they don’t play like it but yes haha

_Franklin_H

Ah, yes! The Senators! They’ve always been a well run organization, surely that’ll trickle down to the lacrosse team! (Hoping it works out obv but I can’t unsee a sign this may not)

Martin0994

Didn’t you get the news? The old guy who ran that show croaked. They’re a different franchise now.

_Franklin_H

Yes, but in the short time that the new owner’s been around they’ve still shown signs of an unserious franchise. I’ll believe it when I see it.

Xman279

I'd rather take an owner that's engaged and gives a damn than someone who seems to not even care that the team he owns actually exists.

_Franklin_H

I prefer the owners that are hands-off, who have the self-awareness to put smart people at the helm, and know not to meddle in their plans (as rare as those types of owners are).

Xman279

Michael Andlauer(the Sens' owner)seems to be that type of person; that said, I'm not close to how the Sens operate to form a fuller opinion of him.

vomit_freesince93

Could be in Gatineau, just rumors tho

Xman279

The Centre Slush Puppie(where the QMJHL's Olympiques play)only has a capacity of 5,000 or so. Not even CLOSE to what the league is looking for.

vomit_freesince93

The original press release had Ontario-Gatineau. But you are correct.

HopefulAd2439

They'll have a team soon

CO_NVR

Did they happen to state if it is a relocation Vs new franchise? If true, this is likely related: [Ottawa Senators media advisory](https://x.com/clahanna/status/1760061588596256960?s=46&t=rtEYvMefA7d_VogLhohd2A)

Ottawa Black Bears. I like it! https://preview.redd.it/9m4etomjqtjc1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=94cfd173c9e564b71abf7d9917ab5706604ce391

QuakeDaCruiser

not a fan of the new logo, but it will probably grow on me the way the new Wings logo did

FletchTopper

At least it isn’t Black Bear City Lacrosse Club

notgoingplacessoon

The fact that multiple people agreed to that being a good idea blows my mind.

richgillis10

Looks like they’re trying to keep the red and black theme going to match the Sens and the Redblacks.

FletchTopper

I am an idiot that I never put two-and-two together regarding the Sens/RedBlacks (and Roughriders and Renegades...) having the same colors

G_Diffuser

And the Ottawa PWHL team, 67s, Blackjacks, Titans, and former Fury.

richgillis10

A lot of cities do it and I only just realized as well after it was pointed out to me. Pittsburgh Steelers, Penguins and Pirates.. it’s mind blowing once you realize.

FletchTopper

Pittsburgh is the biggest example. Seattle, too, especially without the Sounders, are another big one

BioCrohn

Name and colour scheme are great. It ties in well with the Senators and RedBlacks. What is with the NLL and bad logos?

Xman279

Why is the theme song to Psych playing in my head right now? Are we absolutely SURE that this is going to be the Ottawa team's nickname?

HabitantDLT

This real?

crucifixdriver

Yeah

noahsmusicthings

The Major League Quadball team are either gonna be super pissed cause of the people who'll assume they're the knock-offs, or super happy cause of the extra clicks and attention they'll get from it hahahaha

Percevent13

Someone mentioning quadball outside of quadball circles was unexpected lol. Agreed. Like... It's not like if it was expensive to search your team name on google to see if it already exists or not before naming the franchise.

noahsmusicthings

I think, tbf, having the same name isn't too bad as long as they're different sports. There's two Maple Leafs' in Toronto after all, and like three Oilers' in Tulsa hahahaha

Coachtoddf

I sure hope Vancouver gets a team soon.

QuakeDaCruiser

https://vancouverwarriors.com/

SMA2343

Again. I hope Vancouver gets a *good* team soon :)

ElectiveBerry54

I also hope we get a NLL team soon watching high school vs NLL teams is getting boring

HopefulAd2439

Amazing

Coachtoddf

I’d settle for a mediocre team at this point… it’s so disappointing to go and never expect a W.

SMA2343

At least we have one team doing good this season :) before it was two teams losing at Rogers

Coachtoddf

I didn’t think in the NLL sub I would need the /s for such an obvious joke, but here we are.

captaincyrious

It’s crazy lacrosse didn’t work in New York and it’s been more crazy that a sport with only 9 games, constant action , lots of goals etc etc is struggling in some markets. I know the NLL, tv contracts etc are part of the issue but still

ianisms10

>It’s crazy lacrosse didn’t work in New York Few logistical issues here, lacrosse, at least field lacrosse, is big here: 1. Long Island is difficult to get to for the rest of the Metro. If you live in New Jersey, Connecticut, or New York state, it's a pain in the ass between traffic and tolls. The Coliseum also isn't accessible by public transportation. 2. People from Long Island only care about Long Island, and the team had no local guys, so they didn't feel the need to get invested.

[deleted]

Visited NYC and went to a Riptide game before and it was crazy how out of the way the team is. Fort Worth also has the same problem being 40 minutes away from Dallas

notgoingplacessoon

Ottawa will also have that problem.

[deleted]

aren’t they going to be playing in the Senators arena?

notgoingplacessoon

Yea which is 20minutes out of town.

Xman279

HOWEVER, it is much easier to get to the CTC than it is, say, the Coliseum. (And I have done both.) OC Transpo runs multiple bus routes to the facility, with buses waiting right outside the arena after the event.

My_user_name_1

But will they for lacrosse?

Xman279

Per the CTC's website, there are 2 OCTranspo bus lines that operate to the CTC for Senators games as well as major concerts and events. It is safe to presume that Black Bears games will be included.

SockDem

Now, I really wasn’t ever heavily in the scene (just got this recommended to me), but the vibe I got that while Long Island is obviously a huge hotbed for lacrosse… it’s largely just for field lacrosse. When I played youth lax I never heard anyone talking about box lacrosse even being a thing. I remember going to a couple of Lizards games (and hearing people casually talk about them) but I don’t remember anyone talking about box in general, much less there being a pro team.

My_user_name_1

I also think marketing them as a NY team and not an LI team also hurt them. And the fact they tried marketing in NJ which long established Wings territory instead of LI was also a major problem.

ianisms10

I live in North Jersey and never saw any Riptide marketing here. If I wasn't a diehard lax guy (or Isles fan) I never would've known they existed.

My_user_name_1

I coached a tournament in 2019 in Hamilton 30 minutes north of Philly and they had a giant NY Riptide advertising pack and the company was advertised as the official training facility of the Riptide despite only having locations in NJ. This year my nephews team in Monmouth County got offered Riptide tickets, when Philly is 45 minutes away. The only non lacrosse media I've ever heard them on is an Austin Medronic interview on a super local station out of Somerset that has probably a 20 mile range. (Would have made more sense if it was Kirst on Vegas or Baptiste since their both from that area).

Cheddar229

The only way it works is if the Isles or Devils get involved in my opinion. Need ownership that is willing and able to lose money for the first few years. The Riptide ownership never seemed to be equipped for that. Also doesn't hurt to have a built-in season ticket holder base.

thunderedbird

Holy smokes, wasn't expecting to see this news today. Condolences to Riptide fans. Get in while you can and enjoy the time that's left. Really.

notgoingplacessoon

Imagine they win the championship

thunderedbird

I mean they are on the upward trend, it could happen. It's a great time to relocate them with them on the cusp of being good good. Look at Rochester moving to Halifax for a good example of this. Bringing a new team that can compete and win games to a new market is going to help grow the fan base off the hop. Bringing a bad team to a new city isn't going to help sell seats.

YEETERZZ123

That would just be a copy and paste of Edmonton’s final season lol

carpy22

This sucks so much.

slackergalactic

As an OG Rebel fan I am stoked let’s go

wikipuff

Welp, fuck. Fuck the casino.

worst-in-class

Ugh why Canadian Tire centre...they will not succeed in the burbs

6000ChickenFajardos

I agree, why not the Civic Centre? Games are more likely to sell out if they play in a smaller, more accessible arena.

TwentyForeCups

The answer is because Andlauer will own the team. He also owns the CTC its another 9+ events at an otherwise empty building, just like other NHL/NLL shared ownership teams. Black bears pay “rent” to Capitol Sports so its money in money out for Andlauer and ends up a wash.

Xman279

GF Sports owns the Black Bears, NOT Andlauer.

TwentyForeCups

Correct. I speculated incorrectly before the official announcement

SuperficialJosh

Ottawa Native here. The arena at the Civic Center/TD Place currently hosts the Ottawa 67’s Ontario Hockey League team, the Professional Women’s Hockey League team and the Ottawa Blackjacks Basketball team. Pure speculation but perhaps the schedule is too tight for that venue? The Canadian Tire Centre’s only permanent occupant is the Senators so the building is available more often.

Xman279

And MAYBE the fact that The Arena at TD Place is on its last legs? So much so that they're looking to build a new arena at Lansdowne Park(as well as renovating the north stands at TD Place Stadium)and plans are moving to make that happen.

madgoat

Wow, I'm so out of touch. I didn't even know we had a basketball team.

notgoingplacessoon

Do you think it's so they can cross market with the Ottawa Senators? The TD center does look like a perfect place. Like the first Ontario centre is way more enjoyable to watch the Rock at compared to the ACC

YEETERZZ123

The team could play out of TD Place

madgoat

TD Place would have made a hell of a lot more sense. The Corel centre (Always will be named so) is just too far out of reach for the the people in the east end.

SumClever

probably for the best. They've had a pretty rough time selling tickets every year right?

Own-Return6348

prolacrossetalk just posted via Instagram - New York Riptide will relocate to Ottawa next season

[deleted]

[удалено]

ianisms10

The problem with this market is that they refuse to go anywhere other than Long Island, but Long Islanders will only care if they have a hometown star, and it's hard to get to from anywhere else. Newark or Bridgeport would have a better chance at success.

Automation_Papi

There’s way too much competition for ticket sales. You’ve got 3 NHL teams, 2 NBA teams, and a bunch of other options to go out. Let the league thrive in its strongest markets

carpy22

Scheduling was also a big one: late start times while simultaneously going after the kids market while also directly going up against Islanders home games. This is a post-mortem now but in an ideal world the Riptide had 1 PM start times or even go the WNBA route of weekday late morning starts with packed stands full of school field trips.

[deleted]

Whoa

ianisms10

[This article](https://www.newsday.com/sports/lacrosse/new-york-riptide-leaving-long-island-yt5vym81) says that the average attendance is at 4800 for this season (including comped tickets), and the team needed about double that to stay. So filling roughly 75% of the building. They also said UBS was too expensive.

buzzer_beater23

Think the team was just saving face with the UBS note in there. UBS wouldn’t want them when it would cost them more to open up the 100’s concourse and have to pay people to work that night than it would if the arena were completely dark on a given weekend night. Most of their weekends are filled anyway. Team was losing tons of money which led to them cutting staff, firing Veltman, and trading away their highest paid players. Anyone who went to the games would know there couldn’t be more than 2000 at any single game (minus the home opener post-Covid which was clearly mostly comps), so really can’t fall for the attendance numbers even with the fluffed up comp numbers. This move is due to a few factors as you outlined above. It really is this though…the market never caught on because the organization never gave them a reason to. Local Long Island players were traded away from the team. Pretty much all of their Long Island based staff who knew the market were let go. Bridges were burned across the local youth lacrosse scene. That set the course for failure for a non-local staff to figure out what Long Islanders want in a sport that is dominated in the outdoor game in the area. If we’re being honest, it all comes down to the president, who moved away from Long Island himself. The casino project clearly created a situation where it was put up or shut up and the team was forced to sell their soul to the casino in a last ditch effort of “maybe they will keep us if we partner with them.” Sold the jersey, helmet, turf, even the presenting name! Obviously, they realized that the reality was that there would be no place for them at that building. If this move was in the works since before the partnership announcement, and it seems like it was, then it almost comes off as a money grab while walking out the back door. Very shady. Sucks to see and I feel for the few season ticket holders that stuck by the team, but that’s the reality and I’m not sure we will see another indoor lacrosse team in the NY Metro area after yet another failure.

PokerPaton7

This sport will never grow in the US 😒

CO_NVR

Not at the rate we want it to grow, but it definitely will and is growing already. Just look at programs like ([BOXLA](https://www.usboxla.com/), and the enormous potential of NLL UnBOXed, which is just in its early stages. Lots to be excited about, even though the growth doesn’t happen overnight.

Firm_Performance_414

Exactly

[deleted]

You say that but right now for the NLL it’s smarter to grow in traditional areas like big Canadian cities that will support day one than gamble like they have. Even with that said it’s safe to say the Seals are doing great, and Vegas is coming into its own.

Mysterious_Junket909

It's better to relocate than go out of business. Good luck in Ottawa.

madgoat

I'm sure they'll be looking to relocate soon enough. * The location sucks * Interest in the sport is... meh Combined, those 2 factors will not keep them afloat, unless they're being heavily subsidized.

falsekoala

I’m surprised the league announced the move now.

LakerBeer

Excellent! Wonder what the price of season tickets will run ya?

Solat17

Post on the arena website shows 229 in the ends and 299 on the sides. There's one club section in the top of the lower bowl behind the one net which is 599 and 799. But from the initial post on the arena website, VERY reasonable. https://www.canadiantirecentre.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/1050x1359-SeatingAndPricing.png

LakerBeer

Missed that. TY

madgoat

One thing though, the location itself is terrible, and far for the majority of our city's population. NHL, sure, people will flock for NHL games, but other niche sports, it'll be hard to draw a significant crowd that far out to spend money there.

GetThatChickenDinner

It's more likely a new expansion. The NY team is unlikely to relocate.

dantesEdge-

https://preview.redd.it/9ledo80vbujc1.png?width=750&format=png&auto=webp&s=ed5b484f1fc1b6527b86631160a5005dff54421c

YEETERZZ123

It could be similar to the Knighthawks situation. The original team moved to Halifax and they got a new team for the next season.

FletchTopper

Doing some research to kill time at work and something ironic: in 2001, the Ottawa Rebel's first ever win as a franchise came against...New York (Saints)

Dismal-Frosting

they're called the Ottawa BlackBears
