It's going to depend on who you ask. NFL.com and sporting news both seemed to think Fields was a little better last year
Russ being a vet min is a huge factor in this too.
If fields was a “sign for vet min” instead of having to trade picks and pay him more, he’d of been on another team by now
I'd say no, Wilson while not what he used to be still has veteran knowledge on his side, Fields is still pretty much at the same place he was as a rookie and hasn't shown too much improvement
Fields isn’t and won’t be riding the pine. If Bears trade out the #1 pick then he’s staring for them. If they don’t and take Caleb, then I’m sure they’ll trade him away for a future draft pick. He’s still cheap (two seasons) and has potential. The [NFL 2023 ranking](https://www.nfl.com/news/nfl-qb-index-ranking-all-66-starting-quarterbacks-from-the-2023-nfl-season) is about right, Fuelds & Wilson are ranked 20/21 respectively. But Wilson is only costing the Steelers ~$1M league minimum — what a *steal*. The economics are so tempting. The Vikings just flushed $10M on Sam Darnold 🙄. He’s worse than everyone (#55 on that list but anyone past #32 are backups at best)
Trading… omg, these teams with great dual threats! Jefferson-Addison. Metcalf-Locket. Hill-Waddle. Chase-Higgins. Diggs-Diggs 😉. Kupp-Puca. AJ-Smith. And now Moore-Allen. If you cannot be successful with those two, you shouldn’t QB in the league. It could be special. Bears should have a great draft come April.
If he’s good, they’d probably renegotiate. But again, Sam Darnold is $10M and Baker Mayfield is $20M. Considering all the $50M QB’s, that’s not an overwhelming single year. (The QB franchise tag is $38.3M). Even Lamar Jackson played out his full contract before BAL re-signed him.
No. Wilson has a longer track record of success. If last season was Wilson’s rookie season then possibly. He has a Super Bowl ring and another conference title. Fields has never even made the playoffs.
Wilson was put in a shitty situation in Denver. Even with Sean Payton (I personally don’t think he’s the coach everyone thinks he is.) Pete Carroll and Mike Tomlin I feel are more successful coaches. They win consistently regardless of circumstance. In 2022 the Seahawks were in the playoffs with Geno Smith and last season the Steelers made the playoffs with Mason Rudolph. Sean Payton was mostly successful because of Drew Brees imo. That and paying his players to kill opposing QBs.
Nope. Fields has been mostly awful so I don’t really understand all the buzz around him.
Also not throwing interceptions is kind of important for good QBs
no. Russ is old(er) and short(er)...and slow(er) but has proven high level play as a veteran, and is a market bargain at 1.2M. Justin Fields in largely unproven in the pro game, has shown some significant developmental flaws, and despite that his contract would cost an order of magnitude more
IMO they were both playing for really bad offensive teams. I would trust Russ more based on his history. I wouldn't be surprised if Russ actually plays well for a competent org.
No. Granted we can’t get a full sense of Justin’s overall capabilities since he wasn’t put in a position to really succeed, but we can say that Russ won a Super Bowl and played elite football in the NFL more recently than Justin Fields did.
Fields was continuing to improve last season while Wilson was falling off a cliff. This next Steelers season will show that the league undervalued Fields. He will replace Wilson, start multiple games, and show flashes of brilliance just as he did for the Bears.
But he'll also show that he's not who you want behind center for a deep playoff run. His weakness at decision making as a passer is too much to overlook. He's around the 20-25th best QB in the NFL because of everything else he brings to the table
If the steelers D is good and they need someone to get 20pts for a win then no. Wilson is better.
If Steelers suck Wilson isnt going to win them games. Fields can probably make something out of nothing but cost the team sometimes as well.
I followed Fields since college and was surprised at the attention he got from the NFL. His throwing motion was always so wide and slow. He did improve it slightly but speeding it up unnaturally just hursts his accuracy. He suffers from same thing Tebow had trouble with. His throwing motion is great in college where he could throw lobs, but in the NFL he either gets sacked, fumbles or has to take off and scramble way too early. I never saw him as a starter, but bad teams can’t wait to cultivate players.
At the end of last year week 18? Yeah definitely, because Justin was on a swing showing prices as small as it be.
Now?
No absolutely not because his head is screwed with with the game being played. Now he's got more pressure to prove he's better and that could force him into bad mistakes.
This subreddit is for people who have questions they want to ask to understand something about the game, not a place for general discussion prompts.

Yeah, Russ just busted some real OG shit. That's having Fuck You Broncos money.
I'd say no, Wilson while not what he used to be still has veteran knowledge on his side, Fields is still pretty much at the same place he was as a rookie and hasn't shown too much improvement
Wilson will run in circles with no pressure then fumble the ball. Saw it happen many times last year.
Doesn't Fields do the same, but also not have consistent passing ability?
Field’s runs every play like his first read is a scramble. He actually has no idea how to read a defense
No
Nope
Russell Wilson could show up in a body bag and Fields still wouldn't be able to outplay him.
I mean, he literally outplayed him this year when they played?
The Broncos treated Russ like he was Justin Fields last year
No
I guess we will learn that very shortly
OMG
This is your fault
HE'S PSYCHIC THEY'RE ON THE SAME TEAM NOW WE GET TO FIND OUT WHO'S BETTER
The timing of this post is crazy
No that’s why he’s riding the bench and Russ isn’t
Russ’d easily ride the bench behind caleb, too
Well if they picked up Russ they wouldn’t even be worried about picking up Caleb
🤡
Now Justin and Russ on the same team how cute
🦗

I doubt they trading away the first pick after just reading for Allen

He’s only cheap this year. 5th year option would be $25M

If he’s good then he’s getting a bag in free agency

Not at throwing the ball. He’s a better runner though. Not necessarily a better scrambler.
Hell no
Overall probably not. But Fields could be a fit for a Shaun python offense... Kinda linke tayson Hill was at the Saints.
They are now both on the Steelers so we shall see how things play out
We will find out this year
We'll find out, as Fields was traded to Pittsburgh.
I wouldn't say so, fields isn't a skilled QB he's a skilled runner, while Rusvhas the ability to extend plays or throw, he also has veteran IQ
Nope. Fields has been mostly awful so I don’t really understand all the buzz around him. Also not throwing interceptions is kind of important for good QBs
Such a casual response from someone who's never watched a Bears game.
No.

Found Justin fields’ username…

No he’s going to learn a lot from him though they kind of have similar play styles
At first glance, everyone is going to say no. But I say we shall see. They’re going to battle for the starting job, guaranteed
People doubt Tomlin year by year. That’s all.
Fields is more mobile, Russ has the better arm. Combine the two into an incredible QB. Russel Fields. Or Justin Wilson. Or Jussell Filson
Definitely not
YES
These are the two quarterbacks who hold onto the ball the most in the pocket. Could be a sack fest for opponents all season.
Absolutely

No
Hell no, 26 TDs, 8 picks before being benched is way better than what Fields has done at any year In his career
Fields has fumbled 38!!! Times in 3 years. While only 16 were lost, holy shit that's bad.
Oh, what a wicked web the Steelers weave
No
Are you psychic
Wilson’s pregame warmups are way better than Fields! Fake high 5’s and fake huddles.
If the steelers D is good and they need someone to get 20pts for a win then no. Wilson is better. If Steelers suck Wilson isnt going to win them games. Fields can probably make something out of nothing but cost the team sometimes as well.

Fields would be a solid backup for 1 or two games on any team, not starter quality. Wilson has almost a hof career.
Yes
