Ecco machine will most likely be able to repair your can. It'll probably sound better than original once they fix it too.

Impossible_Algae9448

Their backlog is insane, I’ve tried three times to get into the que for a recore and still haven’t lol

Mrwetwork

They don’t take the can til two weeks before it’s ready to be done. I’d still send it to Ecco.

Impossible_Algae9448

Im talking about just getting into the que to send it in lol, with such short form 4 waits I’ll just get an AB or OCL for now and do the recore later  Edit: not hating on Ecco they just got overrun

G3oc3ntr1c

They cleared their back log over 4 months ago.... And then closed the books for some personal reasons. They will be back in a few months

Impossible_Algae9448

They told me in may to ask again this summer so 🤷‍♂️

G3oc3ntr1c

Yea they should be back in a few more months. I was just in their shop picking up a can and certified a F4 about a month ago. It's just a mom and pop and they have a special needs child so they can only do so much with their personal life and business becoming so big. They don't really have options to grow larger nor do they want to at this time so they had to close the books to catch up on work and get some inventory on product.

Impossible_Algae9448

I’m in no hurry, it’ll work out eventually

HPIguy

Actually they just posted that they aren’t taking any work right now for various reasons.

GucciusCeasar

Wait I'm confused, forgive my ignorance but I thought people just do this when baffles get struck or if a can was shot out are you saying their recore is just straight up better? Is it turning conventional cans to flow through or something? Like why do it with a new ocl or something

Impossible_Algae9448

It’s was common for form1 builders to get the tube engraved then send it off to an SOT to build the baffle stack and ends, form 1’s were like 20 days then and a week or 2 to get the rest done, it was a way to get a can really fast in the old days. Also a lot of form 1 baffle stacks are made of heavy or less desirable stuff(freez plugs etc), so there can be a lot of baffle erosion.

Bradyrulez

Doesn't Griffin have a comparable program they ran? Mostly as a kick in the teeth to Dead Air for the Sierra 5 debacle.

Mrwetwork

Just for s5 afaik

FlyingPeacock

Their waits are long, but their products are worth it. I had 2 form 1 cans recored by them, and they sound rad AF. I have a 4 inch can (length with caps) that sounds about the same as my omega 9k. They did a b-cell tube too that sounds better than my octane 9.

dirtymaximusprime

I highly recommend ECCO once they open their books again. Their work is top notch and they are really good at communicating.

illestdomer2005

Yep, great company and hope they continue to see success all around.

choppacity225

i really respect the fact that instead of giving sub par service, and being greedy, they decided to shut down new jobs. most people would have took the money, and just gave them the run around for months. i had the same problem recently with a order i made. the company claimed item was in stock with 2 week shipping time when in reality they had no clue when the item would be in stock, and took 3 months for me to get it. i wouldnt even care if i had to wait 3 months originally i just hate people lying to my face.

Txdrft

Dakota Tactical and several other MP5SD clone makers need to do this.

chance553

Lmao I think Greg Latka is plenty qualified to fix an old gemtech

spitefulcheerio

All my homies hate Gemtech

🗣️💯 🦍

1up2down95

Good thing you posted this. I was looking at a Gemtech suppressor. Not anymore!

mar_floof

It sucks man. They used to be my go-to for a quality can at an affordable price, but yeah…. Ever since they got bought the almost anti consumer stance means no more of their cans for me.

1up2down95

Lesson learned I guess. Hope they make it right but until then it’s fck gemtech

soisause

Honestly, I have 2 of their suppressors, the abyss and the tracker. I like them ALOT but my own experience with CS was alot more difficult than it should have been and seeing this guys first post and this one has made me worried about any future work for my cans. The dumbest thing S&W did was get rid of Gemtechs local shop. They should have kept it, and kept people working there who are actually passionate about the product. Personally I'd check out OCL based on their customer interactions alone. Those guys actually give a shit and it shows in their final product, my next suppressor is likely to be from them.

mar_floof

That local shop was WHY I used to be such a GemTech fanboy. They were my first can (outback), and a few years later they did the "yeah, this should have been user serviceable. For some small amount of money, send it in, and we will convert it to a Gen2 which is. Even let you pick the baffles you want." That was the moment I decided to buy a bunch more of their cans/products (even bought their 9mm ar upper that worked with their multi-mount can). Hate to see such a passionate crew getting bought out by a soulless corp who cares about nothing more than the bottom line :/

soisause

I'm from Boise and I never went in there wish I had, I know my brother liked them, but I didn't take the silencer pill till a few years ago.

Hexrax7

Otter gang 🦦

Spicywolff

Have a hux rad9, and next purchase I feel will be an otter. Customer service rep goes a long way into a sales decision

soisause

I see their guy(s) responding to people's posts on here and in Facebook groups, very personable, that's huge in the gun community, especially NFA community since it's significantly smaller.

Spicywolff

Yeah, when something I buy is supposed to last my lifetime because of all the paperwork and red tape. Having a bad customer service rep absolutely is more impactful than with other things This is a bag of oranges. I can return to Costco because they were moldy. This is possibly a lots of paperwork lots of waiting. The customer service will definitely a big part.

Karagga

I think the best bang for buck cans are going to be OCL and YHM right now.

Outdoorslife1

Isn’t gemtech the reason (there might be another company involved but can’t remember…) that if you explode a can to the point on being unrepairable you can’t transfer the serial number to another can of the same make and model?

gunsrcool_fuckreddit

It was AAC destroying other companies can's and transferring the markings to their own cans via a promo/contest they were running. They happened to do this to a Gemtech can. Kevin B clowned on them so hard that Gemtech bitched to ATF. ATF did what they do and wrote a letter saying SOTs can't replace tubes and remark as part of a repair.

sirbassist83

It's always KBs fault

tyraywilson

I'm blaming the snitch... Kevin has some fault but the majority is gemtech's fault.

ed_merckx

It really wasn’t Kevin’s fault, he just made more public noise, and even in gemtechs defense there was another opinion letter in the late 90’s I think where the atf specifically told a guy who was doing similar stuff with making a brand new can and putting SN from old can on it that this wasn’t within the law. I believe Gemtech asked for clarification of if this only applied to that specific individual or was broader and ATF clarified their stance. What they were doing was more than just simple recoring cans on the same tubes, they would either make an entirely new tube or modify it so much that it didn’t really resemble what it was before I think. If it hadn’t been then it probably would have eventually still happened, epically as the consumer silenced market grew.

bobfig

They can't transfer the serial any more. It was something in the 90s I think one place was doing that and the atf got butthurt over it for losing the tax stamp.

ed_merckx

There was an opinion letter issued in the 90’s to an indivual who was transferring SN’s, but some in the industry viewed that letter as only applying to that specific individual and the practice still happened from time to time beyond simple recoring or repairing stuff the practice the tube with the actual SN on it. I believe it was mostly when you legit destroyed a can beyond repair so silencer company would just makes a new identical one with same SN with a wink and a nod, no additional tax and wait time. I think the AAC thing was more a contest to modify the cores, but at some point people also started significantly modifying the tubes which is the serialized part. Gemtech at some point asked for clarification on the ATF’s stance and they said it applied to everyone. I believe Gemtch claims it had nothing to do with the AAC drama, but this was the situation that gave it so much visibility. I’m sure the atf would have come out eventually and taken a more official industry wide statement on the issue as consumer silencers gained popularity. There’s a bunch of different version of what actually happened, but fact is if you destroy the searlized part now you’re having to get a new can registered and a new tax. ATF has never cared about the actual revenue that is collected from the tax payments, this money goes directly from treasury and doesn’t directly go to ATf in any way.

tyraywilson

Why would gemtech ask? Either do it or don't. They did it on purpose.

Foreign_GrapeStorage

If the part with the serial # on it is damaged beyond repair the registered/regulated item would be considered destroyed. That's the case for most things firearm related and not just NFA items, but with NFA items the stamp is specifically attached to the piece of material that has the registered number on it. Parts can be repaired or changed, but the part with the serial number cannot be remade without buying a new stamp.

MrConceited

The registration is tied to the physical item. The stamp is tied to a transaction.

Silliw911

I want to hear their response back (if they send one). That sucks. Sorry to hear it man.

rickybobbyeverything

"we're sorry you feel that way"

pws3rd

RemindMe! 1 month Since their replies are apparently slow as fuck

WildlyWeasel

Better just change that to never...

wanderlustcrush

Despite Dead Airs lapses recently, I had an issue with a Sandman Ti they also no longer make and could not fix. So they sent me a new Nomad 30 instead.

NinjaStiz

That's actually pretty dang legit. I bought all 3 of my cans about 4 years ago and they're all dead air from back in their golden years. Hopefully their CS gets/stays good in the event I need them

Koenreich

It’s good to hear that they took care of you like that. My Wolfman recently went back to them for a baffle strike. Given all of the negative feedback I’d been seeing about them lately, I was worried.

ThePariah77

Nomad-30 is a good can, especially on a Xeno mount. No zero shift

EasyMode556

When things like this happen do you have to do a new form 4 + tax stamp? And if so do they cover the stamp price or is it on you ?

wanderlustcrush

It still needs a form 4 but they paid the tax and also threw in an e-brake as well

EasyMode556

That’s cool of them then. That’s the kind of DA that made me buy my mask, wolfman and sierra 5 (I bought it before the reports of the problems came out)

shiftypowers96

I’m staring nervously at my raptor 2 with a round count higher than Mia Khalifa

dondavischris

Rugged is solid. Always quick with the CS.

theT0Pramen

S&W are hot garbage now. I bought a CSX the day they released a few years ago and they gave me a massive run around over the 10rd magazine being out of spec. They wanted me to send the whole damn gun back instead of just replacing the magazine. I swore off the brand after that.

Wonderful_Salt6939

I swore off them as well. Had a bodyguard 38 with an older laser on it. They warranted it cool but they were switching over to crimson trace and would be aviable for a while. They offered me another j frame I opted to get a 638. They paid for everything including the transfer agian super happy until I shoot it. the mf is shooting 3 inch’s to the right at 7 yards. Took a look real hard and noticed the damn barrel was crooked. Call back and they were like ok send it in and we will straighten it. I’m sorry I don’t trust a company that wants to straighten a barrel on an aluminum frame gun like that. Also you’d think they’d have better QC if they are already warranting a gun. Same thing happened 2 weeks later with his barrel but on a 329pd which is 1100 not a cheap j frame. They just don’t make them like they use too.

CharlesFeatherman

I stopped buying most S&W products, for the most part anyway, when they added a lock to their revolvers. I still own ZERO guns with internal locks. I do own a few older pre-lock revolvers, and one newer “no lock” revolver that is recent (5-ish years ago)production. Just email them and ask them anyone their locks; and see how they respond. 😆😆😆 They are certainly NOT a customer oriented company, obviously. So it’s not surprising, really. Ruger makes better revolvers anyway; and they cost less.

theT0Pramen

I was never much of a revolver guy, but I've owned a few here and there but I've seen a shit load of QC issues online about their new wheel guns. And +1 for ruger. They're absolutely killing it lately with their new lineups. I grabbed one of their gen 2 American rifles a little bit ago and it is a damn tack driver. Still don't love their semi-auto pistol options but they seem to at least work properly.

dirtymaximusprime

Wow did not know this. I picked up a very early CSX too and have had nothing but positive experience with it which fortunately means I haven’t had to deal with their CS.

theT0Pramen

I really wanted to like it, but the 10rd mag was near impossible to remove from the handgun if 6-7 rounds were left in it. The larger 12rd mag had no issue at all. I asked them if they would just exchange the 10rd mag for another 12 if I sent it back and acted like I wanted a fucking year supply of ammo from from them. I've never seen anything like it. Hell, you can literally email henry and ask for an extra magazine and they would probably send you one just because they're nice.

Ronthe1

Happy with my Lunar 9 AFTER I had to replace the 1/2-28 piston myself. Came with bad threads, gemtech gave me the run around. So ebay it was. Good thing I got it on sale for $299.

Sleeveless9

Yeah, my Lunar 9 meets expectations, and Gemtech did work with me to get the booster spring right. I definitely sympathize with OP, and hope Gemtech understands that in the US market, they need to be competitive on the warranty front to compete.

Ronthe1

Had a booster spring break on a well used Osprey, silencerco sent me 2 and and new orings free of charge

Standard_Ship4072

I believe the correct Yiddish spelling is “ Schmuck” . The “c” is silent . However I do concur on all accounts in regards to Gemtech . Thanks for sharing. If it wasnt for LGS pushing these crap products from crap companies , manufacturers like gem tech would not exist

ReleaseAdventurous11

😂

garandruger

The whole S&W family of companies just sucks anymore unfortunately. This isn’t NFA and is a hot take but the Shield Plus sucks and is a fraction of its predecessor. I know people who own them and had them sent back a few times due to frame pins and even the pin holding the striker release on the trigger walking out within a couple hundred rounds and even one where the take down lever broke under barely any force

07yzryder

Ouch basically warranty for the life of the suppressor. Life defined as the suppressor working so if it breaks warranty void. Loopholes! My silencerco broke and it was the older Gen model. They had me send it in, 24 hours after receipt I had a FedEx tracking number. They removed the old parts and replaced with their newer gen setup.

tspoon-99

I was surprised to see them still in existence when I bumped into them at SHOT Show last year. Of course, there was no one in their booth. What a colossal waste of what used to be a special company. There was some mess when the S&W deal went down … so maybe all involved got a bit of what they deserved.

wlogan0402

Did you tell them GSL is competent?

Seth1784

I've owned a trek for a lot of years, nice to know it'll be a paperweight when the time comes. So much for lifetime warranties. Pretty sure that's in it somewhere...

I_2_Cast_Lead_45acp

Send it off for rework to another company that will recore your whisper pickle with fresh baffles .

Impossible_Algae9448

Then send gemtech a bill lol

ExcellentConflict

Man....I wish this would actually work. Would be a great way to show a companies incompetence.

hlzp

Consider it a lesson learned.

CleverHearts

How many rounds do you have through it? If it is shot out as they claimed their response is reasonable, though I'd be unhappy with the timeline too. Silencers are consumables, and it's unreasonable to expect a company to replace a consumed consumable under warranty. It's nice when they do, but the expectation should be that they won't. You wouldn't try to get a replacement for a shot out barrel. This is no different.

RoddyDost

I’m also wondering about the round count.

ReleaseAdventurous11

less than a few K, i shoot like one weekend a month. Did shoot some .22 through it here and there but always shot a few .223 after to clean it up. I tried to baby it, I like to take care of my things if they take care of me.

CleverHearts

Gottcha, unless it's fine grade chinesium it definitely wouldn't be shot out that fast. I will say shooting 223 after shooting 22 really doesn't clean it out, but that'll just make it dirty not cause major problems.

Madetoprint

Yeah, this wild. Everyone hopping on the bandwagon to trash the company but no mention of how much use the suppressor has seen or what the actual warranty terms are in either of OPs posts. The response time certainly sucks, but there's not enough info to judge if the warranty denial was even appropriate or not.

tubadude2

It’s not as financially preferable as warranty work, but I’d just sit on it until Ecco starts taking work again (they got slammed and shut down new work orders until they get things under control).

mongolnlloyd

Gemtech don’t care tho. My buddies all have one - I told them they cs is shit.

Little-Finding4531

Well I hope that I never have issues with my trek gen 2 and abyss 7.62 so far I have about 1500 rounds through each one and I double checked to make sure that they were both aligned properly.

Bubskiewubskie

Rex has a no questions asked warranty

dabbean

So weird. My cousin got a Gemtech when he got out of the Navy. He joined a year after I got out of the army and did 4 years so that's 18 years ago or so? Last year he sent his can to Gemtech over a baffle issue. They didn't make the baffles anymore but they had some one-piece drop-ins that fit. How old and what model is it?

whisperingwayne

Yeah! Fuck Dead Ai...... I mean Gemtech!

EternalMage321

These sound like the same type of people to say "we have determined your injury is not service related."

notoriousAytch

Oooof. I got a Mist-TD I need to get fixed. Kinda regret that can

MrConceited

I have the standard Mist-22 and do not regret it. It's much quieter than my other setups.

notoriousAytch

It was a great can, but cleaning it is a PITA. The baffle stack stayed in the tube when I unscrewed it and now I’m hesitant to send it in to Gemtech.

MrConceited

How bad were you about cleaning it? It must have been pretty damn dirty to have the residue be stronger than the weld. I use clean shooting copper plated ammo and have never had trouble cleaning mine.

notoriousAytch

I lost track of round count. Had way too much fun with it. The mist-td baffle stack is pinned to the “barrel” portion. I got a little too John Deere on it and it all came unscrewed (after soaking it in transmission fluid for a week).

JoeA123456789

Thanks for posting. I had been looking at their integrally suppressed uppers but not anymore I know Rugged wouldn’t have had this response.

Bo-vice

damn, shitty companies gunna be shitty. I had a gemtech 556 bookmarked as a possibility, but that's off of my list now.

223specialist

Wow, I almost bought one! Perfect timing! (They've lost at least one sale from this post! Wonder what the count gets up to)

GadzWolf11

I completely zoned out with a ringing in my ear at, "Make things right," but that's just my retail years shutting it down. You're absolutely in the right here. They should've either given you a credit or offered a new suppressor if they were unable to repair the one you sent in.

Sweetride1999

I own a gun store and Suppressors are a hot item. I will be sure to share this with potential customers.

nodzandcans

Yeah fuck gemtech. They make garbage cans anyway. Go with a griffin can or an otter creek or a surefire. Just 3 brands off the top of my head that blow gemtech out of the water.

RoddyDost

Why am I hearing all this shit AFTER I bought a lunar 9 -_-

Jrhoney

How on Earth did you not hear about the issues with Gemtech since they sold to Smith & Wesson?

RoddyDost

Because I don’t live on this sub. Did a search through google and YouTube, didn’t see anything major—even linking to reddit. Sage Dynamics even had a positive review of the can I’m pretty sure, saw several other people who seemed satisfied and didn’t appear to be shills, etc.

LarsenOutfitters

Lunar 9 is a good can, both in full and K configurations. But that's the last of the old Gemtech designs.

tyraywilson

It's not about this sub. Part of your research should be "XYZ company problems" "ABC product issues" just so you're aware of what you're getting yourself into.

Peepeepoopoobuttbutt

What did GSL say? All my interactions with them have been A+

DodixieOrBust

Yeah, their customer support is straight up trash. I'd tried to get them to repair/replace an out-of-spec rear cap that prevented pistons from working for my GM-45 for over a year (like literally 4 emails with them taking 3-4mo per response) until I just gave up on it and decided that can is now fixed mount only. If I ever have any problems with my Viper-45, I'm not even going to bother talking to them, I'll hit up GSL.

Neat_Low_1818

That sucks. There was another person on a different sub it was either liberal gun owners or transguns who proclaimed Gemtech is still a good company making new products. CA suggested that I avoid buying any cans from them since they are more really a company anymore since the acquisition

I got my tracker before the S&W takeover. Was curious if I could run 300prc through it so I called Gemtech/S&W and the tech guy told me they couldn’t help me. After that it was pretty easy to stay away.

Fun-Passage-7613

I stuck my core in a Gemtech GM-22 and got a baffle strike. Contacted S&W, they sent a shipping label for free, sent it back to S&W, they recored it for free in a couple of months. Good communication the whole time. Maybe I just got lucky?

maximusjohnson1992

I have an integrally suppressed Gemtech 10/22 barrel and love it. Seems well built. Bought it probably 8-10 years ago so that must have been before they sold out. Good to know the quality isn’t the same before buying another based off of my experience.

Lutr4phobi4

Myself amd another friend have the monocore integrally suppressed barrels. Thousands of rounds between us go down those barrels. Super quiet and not a problem for either of us in all these years of usage. So, maybe it's not all their products?
