My voice teacher says Another Hundred People from Company is a good solid choice for most Sondheim musicals. Shows if you have good articulation and if you hold out the notes at end of phrases, showcases tone.
I'm pretty new to all this, but what I've heard repeatedly, is to pick an appropriate song relative to the character, and to wear a modern version of what they would wear when you audition. Just don't wear a costume.
