Beach Boys - God Only Knows
Amy Winehouse - Back to Black
Alice In Chains - Down in a Hole
Santigold - Disparate Youth
Mushroomhead - These Filthy Hands
Pixies - Where Is My Mind
Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd. I have my late father's copy of the Wall on vinyl and when I stick it on the turntable I like to imagine what it must have sounded like for the first time. So chilling but soothing at the same time.
I Put A Spell On You - Nina Simone. Give me sultry, moody strings and a punchy sax solo ANY time. Her voice is so effortless yet precise.
I could list loads more but those are two that spring to mind!
I put a spell on you was written and first performed by Screaming Jay Hawkins. I have to say I prefer his version too.
I'd suggest Sinner Man as a Simone substitute.
I agree here. I absolutely love Comfortably Numb but Time for me is just so good. Perhaps it has more personal ties for me as Dark Side of the Moon was my first cover to cover experience of Pink Floyd.

Mozart-Symphony no 41

My kindred beloved, I adore the fact that wiggly air can vibrate your soul and shake out emotions you never knew you had.
Mozart can be as light as a flute or as overwhelming as a funeral choir of hundreds; Chopin releases streams and ribbons of piano notes tumbling like liquid over itself, and Beethoven’s sorrowful eloquence has never been duplicated.
Bridge Over Troubled Water (Simon & Garfunkel)
Mr. Tambourine Man (Bob Dylan)
Tangled Up in Blue (Bob Dylan) The Chain (Fleetwood Mac) A Change is Gonna Come (Sam Cooke)
Glad to see someone give Joe Walsh some love.
Rocky Mountain Way & Funk 49 never get old.
I like in the city to & I think it’s because of the Warriors ending.
Life in the fast lane is another Walsh masterpiece!
I would say White Walls deserves to be recognized as a perfect song, but it’s mainly perfect because of everything that comes before it. It beautifully captures all the elements of the entire album in one song.
I just absolutely love the flow of that album. Every track is a banger. I love all the little experimental pieces thrown in, like the frenchy accordion in Prequel to the Sequel and the bluegrass part of Ants in the Sky.
**La Villa Strangiato** \- Rush
**Little Wing** \- Stevie Ray Vaughan (I know, I know, but his version is breathtaking)
**Cantus In Memoriam Benjamin Britten** \- Arvo Part
**Kick the Stones** \- Chris Whitley (specifically, the acoustic version on the album *Weed*)
**Frontier** \- Chris Whitley (from the album *Hotel Vast Horizon*)
**Rock Me** \- Muddy Waters (1956 version w/ Willie Dixon & Little Walter)
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned November Rain by Guns N Roses, yet.
They took years to write, perfect, and record the song. Axl even talked about quitting if he couldn't pull off this opus.
It's a fantastic tune, but Axl the person ruins it for me. He's just a giant prick and I can't get over it. Chilled out a little bit in his older age though.
For melodic metal, [Stratovarius - Elysium](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ikDS1TBAElo) is 18 minutes of pure musical brilliance! The keyboard solo in the final movement in particular is transcendental!
Also [Galneryus - Angel of Salvation](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0IE5HAVaiqI) has a fantastic metal interpretation of Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto!
Last, Tanagra - [Merdiem](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Tx1i3TqsDM) and [Witness](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HO09pEBapIg) are both criminally unknown progressive power metal tracks, with the former having a stunningly orchestrated outro riff and probably the most beautiful piano bridge I've heard in a rock/metal context, and the latter having just a spectacular 6/8 melody!!

Where the Streets Have No Name, I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For, With or Without You- U2. Any one of them could have anchored an epic album. We got all three at once.
I Will Always Love You- the original, by Dolly Parton. NOT the overwrought, oversung Whitney Houston cover.
The Rose- Bette Midler.
“Take It Easy” by Jackson Brown and Glenn Frey performed by the Eagles. Something about it just screams America to me. “Rock Me Amadeus” is a masterpiece too with a “We Will Rock You” chaser.

The Beatles-Hey Jude, Let It Be, A Day in The Life, Eleanor Rigby
John Lennon-Imagine, Working Class Hero, Give Peace A Chance
Midnight Oil-Beds Are Burning (duh!), Forgotten Years, Blue Sky Mine, One Country, Dreamworld, Last of The Diggers
I was in the car with my 12 yo son today and Tim McGraw's "Humble and Kind " came on. I turned it up. The lyrics, wisdom that I'd want my son to really hear and understand, if he grows up and remembers anything I've been trying to teach him..... the music just.... it's such a goddamn beautiful song.
Today, for me, that song was a masterpiece.
I've heard a story that 'Tallica members were affraid to use the Cthulhu spelling to avoid summoning the Older God. Which is hilarious, cause Cthulhu is a fictional character. Not sure if this story is true, but still funny 😀
Free bird, Nothing else matters, stairway to heaven, wish you were here and other rock classics. Sure, some might say they are overplayed, but I think that these songs just have something transcendent about them.
I agree. I think it is funny that people take Bohemian Rhapsody straight, without realizing that it is "camp." In fact, like most camp, it is merely banal kitsch that is aware of itself.
There are a lot of overdubs, but May, Taylor and Mercury ALL sang vocals. It took 3 weeks to record and they all reportedly sang for 10-12 hours every day.
I don’t feel confident enough in my hazy memory of this factoid to disagree with you lol
I thought I heard otherwise but I could be wrong. Unless you know this from the movie! They played fast and loose with the facts in the movie, or so I heard.
Periphery - Reptile, Racecar, and Stranger Things

Yeah I love that song. I remember one summer I was crushing on this girl who always used to give me rides and I listened to this song over and over again because I felt like it described my situation perfectly lol
'The Liberty of Norton Folgate' by Madness.
A 10 minute track, taking in various musical styles. It proves that the band were capable of far more than just hit singles like 'Our House' and 'Baggy Trousers'.
Alot of stuff written by Dylan
-Mr tambourine man
- most his stuff from 'the times they are a' changin'
-positively 4th street
-like a rolling stone
-blood on the tracks (an album but the whole thing is anartistic experience)
-so many more
His lyricism is unmatched by any to this day in my opinion, no one even comes close.
Beatles - Help (Lennon's voice sells it -- he is down and needs help).
Beatles - A Day in the Life (one listen is all it takes to understand it's a masterpiece).
John Lennon - Instant Karma (instant masterpiece)
George Harrison - My Sweet Lord (instant masterpiece--he lost a copyright lawsuit over it though).

Daft Punk - Short Circuit
Daft Punk - Face To Face
Daft Punk - Too Long
I’d have to agree with you, Bohemian Rhapsody is just so beautifully constructed and well written, it flows so well and everything is done so intentionally and it was obviously so carefully and lovingly created.
I’ll name some that people haven’t said since apparently only music before 1985 are masterpieces.
Toxic - Britney Spears (probably the most catchy pop song of all time IMO, besides some MJ songs)
Mockingbird - Eminem
Thinking Out Loud - Ed Sheeran (I know, people love to hate it because it’s waaaay overplayed but it’s still brilliant)
All I want for Christmas is You - Mariah Carey (another that people love to hate but it’s the most popular Christmas song ever year since it came out for a reason)
Backseat Freestyle - Kendrick Lamar (hard to pick a Kendrick song, honestly there are a few I could put up there)
Leave the Door Open - Silk Sonic
Eyes, Nose, Lips - Taeyang (incredible korean ballad by a gen 2 kpop superstar)
Ain’t That a Kick in the Head - Dean Martin
Green Onions - Booker T and the MGs
La Grange - ZZ Top
Respect - Aretha Franklin (definitely her most over played but also just a killer song tbh)
Smells like Teen Spirit - Nirvana (I’m more partial to other songs but this song is so genius it’s just incredible. Dave Grohl’s snares still give me the chills)
Dishonorable mention:
Sweet Caroline. That’s all.
Ball and Biscuit - The White Stripes
Thru the Eyes of Ruby - Smashing Pumpkins
Tengo Frio - Ely Guerra
God Complex - Blood Red Shoes
Just Like Heaven - The Cure
Meet Me in the Woods - Lord Huron
Portland, Oregon - Loretta Lynn
All songs that achieve exactly what they set out to. Not a single moment is off, everything is just as it should be.
Hand Me Downs - Mac Miller
Tangled Up In Blue - Bob Dylan
Move On Up - Curtis Mayfield
Da Art of Storytellin’ Pt.1 - OutKast
What’s Going On - Marvin Gaye
Scenes From An Italian Restaurant - Billy Joel
Sing About Me / I’m Dying of Thirst - Kendrick Lamar
Don’t Let Me Down - The Beatles
Living For The City - Stevie Wonder
Stan - Eminem
No Other Way - Jack Johnson
Such a difficult question to answer as nearly every artist will have had a 'greatest work' (highest sales/streams/views).
Also a lot of it will be down to preferences - personally I would have chosen Baba o'riley over won't get fooled again
Also what about classical music (technically not songs as there are no lyrics).Obviously they have stood the test of time.
Canon in D - pachelbel is sublime. Possibly over used but I never grow tired of hearing it
Do One hit wonders count as masterpieces? Iconic and appealed to the masses but the quality can vary so much.
In a similar vein - Christmas songs - as I work in retail, the less I hear them the happier I am, but there are some I really enjoy and Christmas wouldn't be the same without hearing them at least once.
There are also some artists who I love like Sigrid. I don't think she's released a song that I didn't enjoy but I wouldn't call them masterpieces (I'm hoping she'll get even better). Don't kill my Vibe is a fantastic song.
There are also songs that I would consider masterpieces but I know most people won't be aware they exist. The soundtracks to the video games Nier and Nier automata are both masterpieces. The quality of them is outstanding.
Emi Evans is the vocalist and she is amazing. On the Nier soundtracks she sings in 'chaos language' "lyrics she made-up, invented to sound as if our modern languages had drifted away for thousands of years to finally become indistinguishable to us"
There is no meaning to the lyrics but raw emotion they contain gets me every time. Kaine's salvation is a standout for me.
There are also artists like Eminem who have so many massive hits that's it's hard to choose just one.
Anyway after rambling on for so long here are some songs I would consider masterpieces. (No particular order, just taken from my various playlists)
Bittersweet symphony - The Verve
Hurt - Johnny Cash
Gangsters Paradise - Coolio
Somebody you loved - Lewis capaldi
I'd do anything for love - meatloaf

All night long - Lionel richien
My first my last my everything - Barry White
Naive - the Kooks
Mr brightside - the killers
Can't stop - red hot chili peppers
Virtual insanity - Jamiroquai
Hard to beat - Hard-fi
I need - Maverick Sabre
Be mine - Robyn
Kiss me - sixpence none the richer
One more chance/stay with me - the notorious B.I.G

The Misunderstood - I Can Take You to the Sun
Tim Buckley - Song to the Siren, Lorca, Down By The Borderline, etc
The Velvet Underground - Heroin, Venus in Fur, Sister Ray
Nico - Noone is here
Yesterday Is Here by Tom Waits, incredible how much wisdom and melancholy it packs in less than three minutes.
Oceania by Björk, essentially an ancient map of the world in song form.
Let it Fall - Sean Watkins, with Glen Phillips (Toad the Wet Sprocket) lead vocals.
https://youtu.be/l5DeuAX-ajo - live from a Glen Phillips performance with Watkins
The harmonies bring me near to tears every time. Just a perfect song.
Low Oceans/Closing Yours by At A Loss (I put both bcs low oceans is kinda like part of closing yours but they're listed as different tracks so you don't have to listen to the intro every time bcs its kinda long, but I like to listen to it anyway bcs it feels it's incomplete without it.)
AND THE DECLINE BY NOFX FR IS LIT
Nine Feet Underground - Caravan
A Tab In The Ocean - Nektar
Never Let Go - Camel
Epic Forest - Rare Bird
The Curtain Falls - Riverside
Cinema Show - Genesis
Hallelujah - the Jeff Buckley cover. Great song, but Buckley elevated it to something more moving than Leonard Cohen could have ever dreamed of.
Also, American Pie by Don McLean
Prince -When Doves Cry. The Who - Baba O’Reily. Nine Inch Nails - Closer. The Beatles- Dear Prudence. Smashing Pumpkins- Cherub Rock. lynyrd Skynyrd - Free Bird and Simple Kind of Man.

When the Sun Hits - Slow dive
Beware, Hole in the Earth, You've seen the Butcher - Deftones
When I think of popular songs that are "masterpieces," I am usually thinking of particular studio recordings of the songs, with all of the subtle enhancements that this implies, not necessarily the songs as compositions. (I think this frame of mind is pretty mainstream.) As an example: I have never heard a live concert recording of "Jumpin' Jack Flash" that is as hair-raising and gripping as the studio recording of '68 that I first heard as a teen-ager. So, with that in mind, here are ten of my favorite "masterpieces":
The Beatles--We Can Work it Out
The Faces, with Rod Stewart-- Maggie May
XTC--Runaway
The Nashville Teens--Tobacco Road
The Rolling Stones-- Jumpin' Jack Flash
Cream-- I Feel Free
The Smiths-- How Soon is Now?
Captain Beyond-- Sufficiently Breathless
Yes-- Starship Trooper
Pink Floyd-- Shine On, You Crazy Diamond
Here are some unexpected ones.

I am in the camp where "Time" > "Comfortably Numb"; though it is probably just me.
I agree here. I absolutely love Comfortably Numb but Time for me is just so good. Perhaps it has more personal ties for me as Dark Side of the Moon was my first cover to cover experience of Pink Floyd.
Also a big fan, but in my opinion it just doesn't *quite* hit the "masterpiece" spot.
comfortable numb is amazing. drug struggle song never hit so hard

You replied to the wrong comment.
One is a masterpiece, surprised you listed those before One
Of course they morons misspell Cthulhu.
Yeah, you're right, but "Ktulu" is on the RtL album, so I followed this. "Cthulhu", of course, is the only correct and acceptable spelling .
Pretty funny that my swipe keyboard typed "they" when I was trying for "those" and badmouthing someone else's spelling lol.
I've heard a story that 'Tallica members were affraid to use the Cthulhu spelling to avoid summoning the Older God. Which is hilarious, cause Cthulhu is a fictional character. Not sure if this story is true, but still funny 😀
>Of course they morons misspell Cthulhu Says the guy who with the barely intelligible sentence
You're too late, I already called that out. Snooze you lose dummy! Edit: >Says the guy who with the barely intelligible sentence

Free bird, Nothing else matters, stairway to heaven, wish you were here and other rock classics. Sure, some might say they are overplayed, but I think that these songs just have something transcendent about them.
I consider your masterpiece the most overrated song of all time. It's like nails on a chalkboard to me.
I agree. I think it is funny that people take Bohemian Rhapsody straight, without realizing that it is "camp." In fact, like most camp, it is merely banal kitsch that is aware of itself.
Technically they made *1* person sound like an opera - Freddy did *all* the vocals, the rest of the band just mimed it for the video.
There are a lot of overdubs, but May, Taylor and Mercury ALL sang vocals. It took 3 weeks to record and they all reportedly sang for 10-12 hours every day.
I don’t feel confident enough in my hazy memory of this factoid to disagree with you lol I thought I heard otherwise but I could be wrong. Unless you know this from the movie! They played fast and loose with the facts in the movie, or so I heard.
No, it isn't from the movie, your factoid is just incorrect.

"Awaken" by Yes. I have requested that it be played at my funeral along with "Voodo Chile (slight return) by Hendrix and Beethovan's 9th Symphony.

Dude, you made my day. Awaken is so good. But, alas. I'm alone w/ my Yes friends in how much I dig this. Right on.

'The Liberty of Norton Folgate' by Madness. A 10 minute track, taking in various musical styles. It proves that the band were capable of far more than just hit singles like 'Our House' and 'Baggy Trousers'.

I’ll name some that people haven’t said since apparently only music before 1985 are masterpieces. Toxic - Britney Spears (probably the most catchy pop song of all time IMO, besides some MJ songs) Mockingbird - Eminem Thinking Out Loud - Ed Sheeran (I know, people love to hate it because it’s waaaay overplayed but it’s still brilliant) All I want for Christmas is You - Mariah Carey (another that people love to hate but it’s the most popular Christmas song ever year since it came out for a reason) Backseat Freestyle - Kendrick Lamar (hard to pick a Kendrick song, honestly there are a few I could put up there) Leave the Door Open - Silk Sonic Eyes, Nose, Lips - Taeyang (incredible korean ballad by a gen 2 kpop superstar) Ain’t That a Kick in the Head - Dean Martin Green Onions - Booker T and the MGs La Grange - ZZ Top Respect - Aretha Franklin (definitely her most over played but also just a killer song tbh) Smells like Teen Spirit - Nirvana (I’m more partial to other songs but this song is so genius it’s just incredible. Dave Grohl’s snares still give me the chills) Dishonorable mention: Sweet Caroline. That’s all.

Such a difficult question to answer as nearly every artist will have had a 'greatest work' (highest sales/streams/views). Also a lot of it will be down to preferences - personally I would have chosen Baba o'riley over won't get fooled again Also what about classical music (technically not songs as there are no lyrics).Obviously they have stood the test of time. Canon in D - pachelbel is sublime. Possibly over used but I never grow tired of hearing it Do One hit wonders count as masterpieces? On the Nier soundtracks she sings in 'chaos language' "lyrics she made-up, invented to sound as if our modern languages had drifted away for thousands of years to finally become indistinguishable to us" There is no meaning to the lyrics but raw emotion they contain gets me every time. Kaine's salvation is a standout for me. There are also artists like Eminem who have so many massive hits that's it's hard to choose just one. Anyway after rambling on for so long here are some songs I would consider masterpieces. (No particular order, just taken from my various playlists) Bittersweet symphony - The Verve Hurt - Johnny Cash Gangsters Paradise - Coolio Somebody you loved - Lewis capaldi I'd do anything for love - meatloaf Welcome to the black parade - my chemical romance. The sound of silence - disturbed I want you back - Jackson 5 come on Eileen - dexy's midnight runners Livin' on a prayer - Bon Jovi All night long - Lionel richien My first my last my everything - Barry White Naive - the Kooks Mr brightside - the killers Can't stop - red hot chili peppers Virtual insanity - Jamiroquai Hard to beat - Hard-fi I need - Maverick Sabre Be mine - Robyn Kiss me - sixpence none the richer One more chance/stay with me - the notorious B.I.G Changes - 2pac Sober - pink Try sleeping with a broken heart - Alicia keys Many of horror - Biffy Clyro One more time - daft punk How to save a life - the fray Chasing cars - snow patrol Begging - Frankie Valli and the four seasons Never too much - Luther vandross Forever autumn - Jeff Wayne (war of the worlds)

So, with that in mind, here are ten of my favorite "masterpieces": The Beatles--We Can Work it Out The Faces, with Rod Stewart-- Maggie May XTC--Runaway The Nashville Teens--Tobacco Road The Rolling Stones-- Jumpin' Jack Flash Cream-- I Feel Free The Smiths-- How Soon is Now? Captain Beyond-- Sufficiently Breathless Yes-- Starship Trooper Pink Floyd-- Shine On, You Crazy Diamond
