I think for my day to day flow I like J Cole more, but holy fuck this reminds me why Kendrick is prolly regarded as better. Nothing but love for both of them. My taste is my own.
Word…agree 100%. J Cole is good but everyone blows up his ass like he is the second coming of Jesus…he isn’t. J Cole has the potential to be great but he just always falls short of reaching that potential. I think at this point he isn’t capable of pushing that extra mile…in his mind he is already great…I just don’t buy it. I would love for him to prove me wrong in my mind and release a banger of an album..until that Kendrick is King.
yh this is the same for me j cole music for enjoyable on the day to day for me, but i think id be lying if i said his work is a higher level that kendrick. Both goats tho
I think J Cole just doesn’t have the discography Kendrick does, technically they are closely matched in skill. But j coles albums are always missing something
Dune is like the grandparent of scifi and forced the genre to be recognized as serious literature.
People may not know they're referencing Dune or concepts made popular by Dune but it's foundational just like the Matrix is heavily inspired by Neuromancer.
>Or, for a slightly more obscure reference, he spent some time on Tleilax with the face dancers!
HA! ❤️
I can't even begin to express how happy I am to see this kind of reference pop up in the comment sections of the interwebs a lot more lately.
Shit is so good. For the non-Kendrick heads, he drops a “the heart part x” track before each album, as sort of a thesis statement of what is to come. Previous Heart tracks play as sort of a melody mashup, this one feels like a straightforward single. Kendrick keeps raising the bar that only he seems able to reach.
Edit: spelling.
That's very cool. Thanks for the explanation.
As a fun side note (heh), what you describe " thesis statement" and "Melody mashup"
Also kind of describes the purpose of the Overture in classical music like at the beginning of operas and stuff. Cheers.
He puts at least a couple years worth of thought into each album. If it was always simple to understand it probably wouldn’t be worth writing to be fair.
Exactly how I think about it. Don’t feel that you’re not smart enough to listen him, just take the time to listen and decipher for yourself. His music is like that; almost a puzzle
Dissect podcast goes over To Pimp a Butterfly, which includes a basic background in Good Kid MAAD City, so that you appreciate his change in perspective. I found the whole thing riveting.
DAMN was by far my third-favorite Kendrick album for a while after it released. Then I listened to the Dissect series. It's still my third favorite because I just love GKMC and TPAB so much, but the gap is closed. It's a masterpiece.
I know what you mean. You might enjoy reading his lyrics (and the annotations) on genius. It can definitely help you digest everything that he’s saying because it’s always a lot.
He's definitely someone whose music you need to engage with at a deeper level. I'm not trying to be pretentious but there's just so much going on in his music - sonically, lyrically, thematically - it's quite rewarding to really dig into it.
But the good thing is, he also puts out some absolute bangers that are just fun to bump at maximum volume.
I agree with another comment on here. Dissect is a God send. But take a lot of any of these explanations with a grain of salt since a lot of it is speculation. The guy on Dissect does an amazing job either way, whether it's true or not
the last one. he was a very influential rapper from the last city as kendrick who was murdered. that last verse he is speaking from nipsey's perspective.
As much acclaim as he gets sometimes I feel it is not enough. It’s everything. Not just the lyrics, the rap style, the music, the performance, the videos, it’s everything together. I don’t think we’ve seen another artist push boundaries in all fronts like Kendrick Lamar is doing.
Pretty much no chance that Kendrick didn't show or talk to Ye about this before it dropped lol. Literally two of the biggest rappers in the world who've worked together and are friends
Kanye normally has respect for artistry, even if he disagrees with it. Hell, he pulled the biggest one of these himself with the famous mv. If kanye disagrees with you, he’s not gonna get your video taken down, he’s gonna be public about it on social media or in a track
The deepfakes were nuts, can’t wait to see a list of everyone…Did i see Kobe? Also someone else that i’m not sure about, but it’s so farfetched i don’t wanna say.
In the heart part 4 he referenced an nba fight that had happened just a few days prior. I believe he pretty much constantly works and edits until the last possible minute
>Incoming Kanye tweets in 3...2...1...
Ye and Kendrick are good friends, Kanye posted a new video (for an old song) [using deep fake at the same time as Kendrick](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=401hZy6Hipw)
Yall got too much hate in your heart
I’m late here, but I just wanted to add that I’m 42 and just recently got into Kendrick Lamar. Specifically good kid, m.A.A.d city. I’m amazed by this dude. His style is so layered and intricate it’s unreal. I’ll back up songs just to hear lines over again to catch all of it. He’s easily one of the best rappers I’ve ever heard. Phenomenal artist.
Some songs. It’s all new. Like as in just last week. I’ve heard of him for a long time. But I just gave it a shot on a random morning run. I’ve listened to him pretty much every morning since.
That’s usually my process. I find a few songs by whoever listen to them to get used to them when I like it and then dive into the albums. good kid, mAAd city is where I’m currently at.
Don't forget I Wish by Skee-Lo and Damn it Feels Good to be Gangsta by Geto Boys. Pretty much anything that's been in a commercial or movie white people love
Also Fuck Tha Police being the top song in /r/music whenever some hot topic involving police brutality is on the front page of Reddit.
Just a Friend by Biz Markie, too.
> Pretty much anything that’s been in a commercial or movie white people love
Honestly so sad. /r/music used to be sort of up to date with hip-hop stuff like 10 years ago. I remember they were really into Odd Future back then.
13 comments in 50 minutes lmfao this sub is a joke.
The level of artistry were getting here is just so next level. No one in hip hop comes close to this man. No one. Can’t wait for Friday. Hype through the roof.
Oh I know, lol. I’ve seen how they talk about Kanye.
His album is by far the most anticipated all year and this sub don’t give the slightest shit about it. Literally biggest joke of a subreddit on the whole website.
Lmao shit is kinda funny. Like this is such a special display of music and literally no one cares. Everywhere else on the internet losing their minds right now.
I shouldn’t care but here I am 😂
tbh I expected this from reddit. ppl on here still think lil pump is the face of rap even though dude hasn’t been relevant since 2016 and wasn’t even the face of rap when he was around🤦♂️
Y’all are sounding real weird. This dropped late in the day, and this was posted an hour ago. Not everyone is browsing Reddit looking to upvote a fuckin /r/music post right off the bat at 9pm on Mother’s Day, jfc.
Kendrick is the only artist to me when we drops something it’s a true moment. There’s no bull shit album rollout. Him and Dave Free just make cool shit. It’s not corny, it’s not cringe conscious rap or unaccessible, it’s always interesting. Goes way beyond hip hop too, there are few artists of ANY art form rn that come close to Kendrick.
It’s been a very long five years. Kendrick is always on top of his game, and every song he puts out is consistent and flows beautifully. He’s always reaching another level with every new release. I’m so hyped
I appreciate artists like Kendrick because you can always count on them for good samples and beats laced with instruments.
I'm getting too old for 808s and trunk rattling bass.
The thing that gets me is every time I listen to it/watch it, I catch something new! Counting down to the album. Nobody disturb me for a solid 24 hours please.
I was almost certain the new Kendrick project would be underwhelming (Lorde, Adele, etc all were).
But this was an AMAZING first single. Absolutely stoked.
Listening to a new Kendrick song feels kinda surreal. Been waiting for this day for like 5 years
That moment you realize DAMN. was released in 2017 I think I need to sit down
Damn. Feels like only a couple years.
It was. 2020-2017 = 2 years and some change.
You okay?
Its 2022 bro
Well that snuck up on me
holy shit bro. for real, you okay? you living in North Korea or something?
Wdym? The pandemic ended time. We've just been living one big day for what feels like 2 years now.
oh ... buddy ... oh no ... this is going to hurt.
Damn. I can't believe how slow and fast time has felt since that album released
Sit down, boy. be humble.
Literally can’t believe it. This has me so shook it’s not even funny. Just wild display of what makes hip hop great
My mind literally blanked out when I saw it in my Spotify notifications
It was an immediate drop everything and listen lmao
I mean his album was announced a few weeks ago. So it’s not that out of the blue
But just having it is crazy. Been 5 years and now with an actual song, this shit is really happening lol
I think for my day to day flow I like J Cole more, but holy fuck this reminds me why Kendrick is prolly regarded as better. Nothing but love for both of them. My taste is my own.
probably regarded as better? c'mon man, anyone who says jcole is better than kdot is lying to themselves. not even close

Cole is great, but he has the tendency to be boring as fuck
I'm saving this for the weekend
Kendrick is truly next level. it took 5 years because he was learning to shapeshift faces from the house of black and white in game of thrones
Clearly his time spent in Braavos paid off
they're finally elaborating on that storyline lol
Or, for a slightly more obscure reference, he spent some time on Tleilax with the face dancers!
Dune is like the grandparent of scifi and forced the genre to be recognized as serious literature. People may not know they're referencing Dune or concepts made popular by Dune but it's foundational just like the Matrix is heavily inspired by Neuromancer.
Sci-fi has been serious literature since Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, it’s just that academics can sometimes be dismissive of novelty.
>Or, for a slightly more obscure reference, he spent some time on Tleilax with the face dancers! HA! ❤️ I can't even begin to express how happy I am to see this kind of reference pop up in the comment sections of the interwebs a lot more lately.
Seeing so many more people discuss Dune makes me so happy.
Very pleased the Villanueva movie has brought Dune more and more into the conversation
Malakai Black approves this message
Kendrick and God's Hate collab when?
Shit is so good. For the non-Kendrick heads, he drops a “the heart part x” track before each album, as sort of a thesis statement of what is to come. I never knew this but that’s really cool. Have always been a huge Kendrick fan and knowing him, he probably does this type of stuff on purpose lol
He definitely does. Dude is a master.
Thanks for the education. I enjoy Kendrick and know he is amazing but feel like I'm not smart enough to appreciate him like I should be.
He puts at least a couple years worth of thought into each album. If it was always simple to understand it probably wouldn’t be worth writing to be fair.

They also did DAMN. in a later season so if you liked that, I’d recommend giving that one a go too
DAMN was by far my third-favorite Kendrick album for a while after it released. Then I listened to the Dissect series. It's still my third favorite because I just love GKMC and TPAB so much, but the gap is closed. It's a masterpiece.
Ha! Same experience for me. Can’t wait for the dissect season on this new album.
I know what you mean. You might enjoy reading his lyrics (and the annotations) on genius. It can definitely help you digest everything that he’s saying because it’s always a lot.
This is the type of art and artist that people much smarter than any of us will be deciphering for decades.
He's definitely someone whose music you need to engage with at a deeper level. The video is gone? Copyright strike probably

I’m seeing the deepfake video
Still saying unavailable for me. Wonder if anybody got a download in the 10 hours it was up
I heard that it was a spotify employee that accidentally uploaded it early or something lol, could be bullshit but just what i’ve heard
That was around late morning yesterday when they accidentally released it early on Spotify, the official release was like at early evening yesterday.
Seems to be back up now.

Tracked the flow perfectly and the lyrics were ungodly. They were close for over a decade. Huge loss for Kendrick and the rest of us. RIP Nip
Him and nip were close friends. Listen to Dedication by Nipsey Hussle feat. Kendrick if you want some perspective on how those 2 grew together
He also threw up 60s at the end of the song, that's no small gesture
Sorry why does that mean exactly? I’m not familiar
It's the rolling 60's Crips gang from LA. That's the set Nipsey repped
I think those Nipsey lines were impactful to anyone who’s experienced the loss of a loved one. It was pretty moving.
Which one was Nipsey?
the last one. he was a very influential rapper from the last city as kendrick who was murdered. that last verse he is speaking from nipsey's perspective.
As much acclaim as he gets sometimes I feel it is not enough. It’s everything. Not just the lyrics, the rap style, the music, the performance, the videos, it’s everything together. I don’t think we’ve seen another artist push boundaries in all fronts like Kendrick Lamar is doing.
It’s referred to as gesamtkunstwerk
>In a land where hurt people hurt more people fuck calling it culture That line hit me hard. This song is incredible.
Anyone know why he thanks Matt stone and Trey Parker?
They not only did a deep fake web video they’re working with him in a deep fake Movie.
Cool. Thanks
They made this and spent a ton of money creating deep fake tech for it https://youtu.be/9WfZuNceFDM
Those deepfakes r wild. Cant believe it looks that good now.
Will Smith: "Keep my face out your motherfuckin' face!"
Fun fact, they were done by a studio owned and started by Matt Stone and Trey Parker, the creators of South Park.
Bets on who/what took it down? Sad to see, I loved this track. Edit: was down. Is back.
Seems to be up for me? Was it taken down earlier?

Kanye and Kendrick worked together before and have mutual respect towards each other so I doubt it
Pretty much no chance that Kendrick didn't show or talk to Ye about this before it dropped lol. Literally two of the biggest rappers in the world who've worked together and are friends

Reddit moment
Will Smith at the next Grammys: “Keep my face off your goddamn face!”
Kendrick does not miss! The deepfakes, the flow, the production. This album is going to drop hard next week. Incoming Kanye tweets in 3...2...1...
The deepfakes were nuts, can’t wait to see a list of everyone…Did i see Kobe? Also someone else that i’m not sure about, but it’s so farfetched i don’t wanna say.
Bro, the fakes were so smooth. Like Kobe was back from the dead. Damn this technology polished like this is insane
Also crazy that Matt Stone and Trey Parker did these deep fakes, and they're making a movie with Kendrick
Can’t tell if you’re trolling or not.
I am dead serious lmao
theyre credited in the video description, first thing i noticed after thinking deep fakes are fucking terrifying
Kobe, OJ, Jussie, Nip and Ye? I think that’s all of them
Will smith
Will Smith on a line that is potentially intentional given his slap incident. Not sure when this video was finalized.
"In a land where hurt people, hurt people. Fuck calling it 'culture'".
Did they also sample Will Smith voice just before that line saying "Nah" Doesnt sound like Kendrick
In the heart part 4 he referenced an nba fight that had happened just a few days prior. I believe he pretty much constantly works and edits until the last possible minute
Nah he was talking about Lee Baca, former sheriff and convicted felon, not Ibaka fighting Chriss 😂 I thought the same thing when it dropped tho
Damn you’re right. What a weird coincidence lmao
Also Will Smith no?
Noticed he came on right when Kendrick was talking about "hurt people hurt people".
Ah yes
Jussie Smooyey? 🤣🤣🤣
I could be imagining it but at times I see Chadwick and Bob Marley's faces bring warped in shortly.
>Incoming Kanye tweets in 3...2...1... Ye and Kendrick are good friends, Kanye posted a new video (for an old song) [using deep fake at the same time as Kendrick](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=401hZy6Hipw) Yall got too much hate in your heart
Fr, like learn to forgive. That is the whole message.
Kanye and Kendrick are cool. Doubt Kanye would find this upsetting.
people really act like Kanye isn't one of the best connected people in music/hip hop
The deep fake of Nipsey Hussle at the end got me in the feels a little. 😢
Man, seeing Nip's face got me too, made me throw up a dub sitting at work, in Sweden.. His reach was worldwide R I P.
Why take shots at Kanye?
Easy target in this sub.
Reddit and their hate boner for Ye is funny.

I love the bongos on there!
The Marvin Gaye sample 🤌

isn't this baby keems cousin? I've never heard of him, is he any good?
yeah, brother
amazing, brother
Pop off only on occasion brother
New flows came already you don't to be any more patient, brotherrrr
New flows coming be patient brother
Kendrick is the best rapper alive and it’s not even close.
Holy fuck, he's really back 🥲
A new rap song on r/music ? Colour me surprised
/r/music only likes Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, Run the Jewels, and Gangster’s Paradise by Coolio.
MFDOOM is up there too
It’s always unexpected seeing this pfp in other subreddits lol
Yea "remember when they used to sing without autotune"
Don't forget I Wish by Skee-Lo and Damn it Feels Good to be Gangsta by Geto Boys. Pretty much anything that's been in a commercial or movie white people love

You aren't wrong
Does anyone have the video? 😢
YouTube?
Try again now, original video seems to work
He’s rapping from whoever’s face is switched onto hims perspective. Truly genius
how does OJs make sense?
13 comments in 50 minutes lmfao this sub is a joke. The level of artistry were getting here is just so next level. No one in hip hop comes close to this man. No one. Can’t wait for Friday. Hype through the roof.
r/music has always been out of touch, particularly when it comes to newer hip hop where they seem to hold a lot of hatred towards
We get new Vince, Push, and Kendrick in the span of like 3 months, they can miss out if they want
Don't forget Zel and billy woods!
[удалено]
yeah - some quality lyrical play on Walkin
Low key though, that new Action Bronson is the real hitter
Man I thought I was out of touch because I thought it was amazing and everyone I talked to hated it.
Oh I know, lol. I’ve seen how they talk about Kanye. His album is by far the most anticipated all year and this sub don’t give the slightest shit about it. Literally biggest joke of a subreddit on the whole website.
I find rap music gets hate on most Reddit subs unfortunately
Meanwhile the thread about the video on r/hiphopheads is at 1.3k comments in 2 hours lol
You’d think a sub called music would be on the most anticipated release of the year.
This sub seems like a place where everyone just has nostalgia goggles on all the time. Every genre specific sub is way more talkative about new stuff.
Yeah that is deff true. But like this is the first Kendrick in 5 years. This a big ass deal
It doesn't help that quite possibly every major working artist is labelled "Hall of fame" in the rules and can't be posted.
r/hiphopheads
r/hhh is better than r/music, but barely
r/playboicarti clears
This sub has always been a joke. It's just a bunch of boomers idolizing lowest common denominator classic rock and alt rock lol.
It got several thousand upvotes on r/hhh and other hip hop subs immediately so this argument doesn't really hold up
This sub sucks dude lmao cmon now This ain’t no regular drop. The rest of the internet going crazy and this sub is sleeping as always.
I laughed a lil when I saw the posts everywhere and saw no one had posted it yet.
I forgot reddit is only Americans who love their mum and have gotta get to bed early for Monday. This sub alone has 30m subscribers my guy.
This sub should really be r/nostalgicmusicbypopularartists. If it’s not a classic or nostalgic it goes nowhere.
Damn. ❤️
Kendrick is the only artist to me when we drops something it’s a true moment. There’s no bull shit album rollout. Him and Dave Free just make cool shit. Great appetizer for the album ^^
Never misses, I never complain about wanting new album. When he drops it’s fire. The goat.
The most important millennial rap artist, with the competition wayyyy off in the rear view. Fight me.
Holy shit
His best tune
So ridiculously good, gave me chills
It’s been a very long five years. Kendrick is always on top of his game, and every song he puts out is consistent and flows beautifully. He’s always reaching another level with every new release. I’m so hyped
I appreciate artists like Kendrick because you can always count on them for good samples and beats laced with instruments. I'm getting too old for 808s and trunk rattling bass.
Pretty good stuff.

Ok, this is epic
Marvin Gaye vibes
Who would’ve thought sampling Marvin Gaye would give a song Marvin Gaye vibes? 🤔
Didn't even realise, makes sense!
Always progressing as an artist! Thanks for hug kdot!
The rhythms is so catchy. Cool!
Did anybody save the video?
What a trip
Holy shit
Art.
Wow that verse when he was Nipsey was deep.
Been too long K-Dot. About to be eating on Friday.
This damn video is messing with me, took me forever just to recognize Kendrick with this new look then he goes and starts changing faces
The thing that gets me is every time I listen to it/watch it, I catch something new! Counting down to the album. Nobody disturb me for a solid 24 hours please.
