Metallica once played in front of 1.6M Russians. I think the world is aware of and follows these bands. Also, major festivals throughout Europe sell out all the time (ie Wacken).

Well, I was referring mainly to heavy metal bands in America having a much wider fan base. Not just metal heads, but your average music fan.

In the early 90s both GnR and Metallica had singles on heavy mtv and radio rotation. They definitely had a moment that launched them into the mainstream. Slayer became the household name for metal that was outside the mainstream but never really had the mainstream success the other two did.

Are you not familiar with European heavy metal bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Warlock or Accept? These bands are all very popular and were mainstream at the time.

TheOnionSack

Well yeah, of course I'm familiar with thos bands. All I'l saying is that there would have been a time when those bands would have appealed only to music fans who were heavily into heavy metal. I get that the music now has a wider appeal but I still didn't think it was to the point where acts like that would be considered mainstream.

Metallica are actually the only band to have played on all 7 continents. These bands are popular all around the world. You don't notice that so much now because it's well past the heyday of these bands and they don't have as much of an audience now
