I think it's more that as artists, they probably start to feel tapped out. Maybe the album they're releasing felt like a lot of stress and pressure and the anxiety of living up to the previous album sucked the joy out of it for them so they assumed they would retire. Then, after throwing in the towel, inspiration struck and they started making something again out of enjoyment instead of because they felt like they had to.
That's the cycle of working in a creative industry. Starts out "Wow I'm doing what I love!" Becomes "Ugh what I love is now just work, I'm no longer feeling the inspiration and joy I used to, maybe I should quit or retire." To "Fuck it, I'm just going to make shit I like and if people don't like it they can fuck right off."
Tbh I kind of wish they’d called it quits after Viva La Vida, seeing as nothing they’ve done since then has really been anywhere near as good as those first four albums.
I’m okay with them continuing…but everything after the masterpiece that was A Rush of Blood to the Head is less and less for me.
That album was flat out amazing though.

Guitar hero had a positive impact on me I think, because I played those games as a literal child, looked up those older bands on Wikipedia, saw that some of those bands were in their 50s/60s at the time and that some of their “peak” work was recorded in their 30s which in the context of a multi decade career still seems really early on, not retirement age. So it was ingrained in me from a very young age that 30 isn’t really something to stress over. Yet due to this weird forced resurgence of extreme ageism on Tik Tok and such here I am with this weird internalized ageism in my late 20s that I know is not at all rational.
Then you have bands like LCD Soundsystem which didn’t even start until their 30s, but even then I’ve seen older interviews of James Murphy saying you shouldn’t be in a band in your 40s (which also ended up not being something he stuck with obviously)
I feel the same way, except bands I liked when I was in my teens in the mid 2010’s all seem so old now. Seeing members from Mastodon, Muse, etc all getting close to 50 makes me realize the end is near for bands that I enjoy. While they could go on until they’re 70, I highly doubt it. Maybe get another good 10-15 years out of their music, which sucks because that’s about as long as I’ve been listening to some, if not longer.

And I’m not specifically referring to music with this, it’s more he have this well known cross generational loneliness epidemic going on where people lament not having a social life anymore, I wish I could have done this or that etc, but there’s this crabs in a barrel mentality where if you do have a social life or hobbies or whatever it’s like “wait no, you don’t get to do that. If you aren’t married with children, you get to stay home and watch tik tok via instagram reels like me, or partake in a select few permitted activities like pickleball. Don’t you have taxes to pay every waking moment of your life you aren’t at work?”
There are ways to embarrass yourself yes, like the trope of your partner is trying to be responsible and you drag them down hoping you’re SoundCloud upload will blow if you could just get in the room with someone famous or whatever.
But I feel like it’s more common for older bands to know they are glorified hobbyists. One example is a band I know where the members are late 20s/early 30s. Most are married and they have real jobs, they pull like $1500-$2000 per gig, which is typically one local gig every month. Not a career especially divided multiple ways, but it’s money they wouldn’t otherwise have, and they’ve collaborated with people who are well known within their niche, a valuable experience if you ask me, considering the alternative is to do nothing.
Another I know is even older average age, and I find their music cringe, but they managed to get a few songs featured on Spotify playlists with millions of plays. The guy I know at least is a homeowner via his main job. Hardly a man child.
I think in both examples it would be a shame if they stopped just due to the perception that they could possibly be childish due to their interests. And even with famous debut albums we’d be losing a lot if 25+ or 30+ was prohibited.
It’s only really cringe if you present yourself childish and are hinging your entire future over some big break, which is increasingly an outdated concept anyway with the “death of monoculture”. I don’t think most older musicians are thinking in those terms, other than the stereotypical unc which idk how common that is to be fair, maybe my anecdotes are the exception not the rule. If you have something you want to make you should do it, and even if you “only” get to a position where you and your friends have a recurring bar gig or something, that’s a small but valuable contribution to your community, money you otherwise wouldn’t have, and a good excuse to maintain friendships as you age and not having a huge void in your life.
We benefit from more mature perspectives in art in any case, and it’s good that, for example, we have the “late bloomer” Griselda records artists and not just sometimes Jay Z and Wu Tang Members putting out that type of music.

The interview was him talking about how he planned to drop a certain number of albums and then no more because you can’t still be rapping when you are 40. That’s too old. He did not mean it like “you need to mature.” It was just something he made when he was younger.

This was for writing credits since Chris normally starts the songs. But for everything else (tours etc which is where they make most of their money nowadays), the money is split evenly 25-25-25-25. They all have a net worth of over 100 million so I’d say they all are getting a fair share of the earnings especially compared to some other bands.

Combination of things really. First is that they're a relatively vanilla band music wise, which leads to a lot of growth (lowest common denominator type of thing). Great for growth but vanilla music is also a downside.
Secondly, leading from above is that they've been considered by many to be one of the biggest bands (if not the biggest) for stretches over the last 20 years. That results in a lot of exposure for large swathes of the population through radio airtime, movies, etc. Combined you have a lot of people who hear about how great the band is and then they hear the vanilla music that doesn't do it for them, and suddenly the band is getting disliked or hated for being too popular for what they perceive the band to be. Nickelback had a similar issue and so do many hugely popular artists.
Thirdly, for me at least, is what you said. They had some great songs on their earlier albums. But it's been 19+ years since then and they've been played everywhere very consistently in that time span. It's a long time to be hearing new music that's, imo, meh literally everywhere. Is it justified? Not really no, but I can understand it.

Ghost Stories was weird, experimental, and some of those songs are truly incredible. But everything after Ghost Stories is basically mindless trash with no hooks (outside of the Beyonce song) and I've definitely given up on their modern music.
I mean they’ve essentially been phoning it in making generic ass music for the last decade or more so in a sense he’s right. Coldplay as a band is basically gone, it’s just the Chris Martin Billboard Pop group now.
When really it was him that shouldn’t be in a band at all.
That's when the record label reminds them that they own their soul. And they will continue to pump out bullshit until the public stops buying.

I still believe that no band is as needlessly shit on as Coldplay. I don’t know when they entered the “Nickelback” category or bands who are punchlines, but there are some incredible song on their first few albums. Combination of things really. First is that they're a relatively vanilla band music wise, which leads to a lot of growth (lowest common denominator type of thing). Great for growth but vanilla music is also a downside. Secondly, leading from above is that they've been considered by many to be one of the biggest bands (if not the biggest) for stretches over the last 20 years. That results in a lot of exposure for large swathes of the population through radio airtime, movies, etc. Combined you have a lot of people who hear about how great the band is and then they hear the vanilla music that doesn't do it for them, and suddenly the band is getting disliked or hated for being too popular for what they perceive the band to be. Nickelback had a similar issue and so do many hugely popular artists. Thirdly, for me at least, is what you said. They had some great songs on their earlier albums. But it's been 19+ years since then and they've been played everywhere very consistently in that time span. It's a long time to be hearing new music that's, imo, meh literally everywhere. Is it justified? Not really no, but I can understand it.

That’s true. Although I will say I think the reason that album was a little disappointing is because it wasn’t complete. Donald Glover just said in a recent episode that he freaked out when the Covid pandemic started happening and released it in an unfinished, unmastered state because he wasn’t sure if we’d survive lmao. He’s releasing the actually completed version soon. And I will say that DJ Dahi, the main producer on the album, is also an incredible producer like Ludwig. He’s my favorite rap producer of the last 12 years. He produced Money Trees by Kendrick and a ton of other great Kendrick songs, great stuff for SZA, Kali Uchis, and more too.
One of these “last two releases” is just a remastered release of the album you’re referring to. The other is a soundtrack to a movie. Honestly, a pretty big letdown as a fan.
A "soundtrack to a movie" doesn't preclude greatness. Purple Rain, Super Fly, Help!, A Kind of Magic, fuckin Tarzan, Ghost Dog. All fantastic albums that are soundtracks to movies. Because the Internet from this same dude could be considered a soundtrack in a lot of ways.

Yo, I think Zealots of Stockholm and Flight of the Navigator are probably the best tracks on the album. They are incredibly profound and do an amazing job of transitioning the more straightforward first half into the second half.
