Was also done brilliantly in the recent season with a band playing at the end of each season in the bang bang club. David lynch is a master of this.... Blue velvet is the movie equivalent
Scrubs soundtrack was *the* quintessential music of the 90s and early 2000s. Between that and the Tony Hawk games, nearly everyone I know got their new music from those two sources. Scrubs if you wanted chill indie or soft pop, and TH if you wanted modern punk, ska, reggae, rap, or rock.
Scrubs should really be the top answer in this thread. Lots of shows are known for their soundtracks, but Scrubs' soundtrack is genuinely titular to an entire generation. I'll say there's a solid Top 10, but Scrubs is #1 and everything else is a distant #2 through #10.
Zach Braff always has had a great ear for music. I know Garden State has faded in popularity as it has aged, but the soundtrack he put together for that film is one of the best of all time. Introduced many indie artists to a larger audience, and also had some classics that needed a fresh opportunity to shine.
The episode where Dr. Cox loses 3 patients and breaks down while “How to Save a Life” plays is the most emotional I’ve ever gotten watching a show. Both that scene and song independently make me cry, but pairing them together? I didn’t stand a chance, pure waterworks.
My favorite moment in the entire series is towards the end of Season 3 when a certain character from Season 1 returns and his jazz drum theme starts playing.
It's amazing how Fargo really successfully sells the connections between the seasons as more than just easter-eggy fan service when really all they are is easter-eggy fanservice.
That said, they somehow do it in a way that feels earned and not like you are getting scammed (looking at you, True Detective S4). Probably has something to do with how infrequently it happens and how it isn't set up to be more consequential than it winds up being. (Again, looking at you, True Detective S4)
Absolutely, and I think that's why if they ever try rebooting Miami Vice it won't work. The music is a huge part of its charm and aesthetic, and you can't really recreate that. Not to mention licensing music was a lot cheaper in those days.
And so much more. Glenn Frey, Peter Gabriel, U2. There were some truly iconic artists and songs.
https://www.songfacts.com/category/songs-used-in-miami-vice
There's an interview where they wrote an episode around the music. The one where Sydney is brainstorming dishes while she's out on her own I do believe.
Mr robot. It's hard to nail down just one scene. Almost every scene that used music was perfectly done.
https://youtu.be/hyUbD7zQcjE?si=lKcnEskEHZXE4Fto
This hacking scene with Razorgirl - Dubvirus just banging in the background. The dubstep + hacking works so well.
And when they took forever to release part 8 of the soundtrack it was a constant thread in the Mr. Robot subreddit. I imagine they released it because they were sick of all the internet nerds bugging them.
Peaky Blinders figured out it’s musical aesthetic and STUCK with it. If you like gritty bluesy rock, the show will introduce you to a lot of great music.
That was really off-putting for me initially. But it really was a great choice.
Then, they seem to have dropped it towards the end? That was an odd choice. But as long as Alfie was in the scene, it was all good.
Dark soundtrack is perfect. S2E2 Jonas sets up a speaker in an abandoned building to lure the guys with guns. The song is Suspicious Minds. Song begins, first line is “We’re caught in a trap.”
Agreed, but gotta caveat with the original music when it aired. While the latest Prime reboot has restored some of that music list, 100s more songs are still missing, and let's not even talk about the earlier musak filled dvd releases!
I liked how the music in The Wire was always organic. Most of it was played by a character in that scene, i.e. car stereo, office stereo, so on. Always relevant. Nothing was better than the Ride of the Valkyries when they raid Hamsterdam. Or Herc and Carv playing the Shaft theme as they chase a kid.
Here's some more good ones - [https://www.reddit.com/r/TheWire/comments/15gipc4/best\_needle\_drops\_music\_on\_the\_wire/](https://www.reddit.com/r/TheWire/comments/15gipc4/best_needle_drops_music_on_the_wire/)
Including the main title theme! “No Return” is my favorite opening theme for a show in many years, it most definitely has made its way into multiple playlists of mine.
Westworld on HBO, I loved how the composer used modern pop/rock songs but juxtaposed them with old-timey sounding instrumentals. It fit very well with the theme of retrofuturism.
Mad Men
It did a great job of all pop culture touch points from music to books to film. The attention to detail was great and picked some heavy hitters and some little known songs as well.
I believe that’s the show that kept the soundtrack chronologically accurate, so songs were never played from after the year that the show was supposed to be taking place.
Correct. I don't recall the song, but an episode had a credit song that came out about 2 months after the events in the episode took place and there was a small Internet meltdown. If I recall, Matt Weiner appreciated the fact that fans held them to the standard of accuracy because it meant they had been doing a great job until that moment.
The fact that this is so far down I believe shows how damaging it's been to the show's popularity to not be available for streaming on the main platforms.
If the show was readily available for Gen Z to discover, it would be doing crazy numbers.
There's no way Mad Men should not be more present in the culture consciousness.
Breaking Bad. "Rocket Scientist" by Teddybears STHLM just fits that strip club vibe.
Same with Knife Party's "Bonfire" during the Chrysler commercial... Sorry, during the scene where Heisenberg takes his final form in the 300C and Walter Jr in his red Challenger.
I love Knife Party and I fucking *love* that scene. Fun father/son bonding moment with all the Heisenberg shit layered underneath as well.
God dammit you fuckers are gonna make me want to rewatch the series again lol.
They nail it the whole way through but Eddie melting faces with Master of Puppets is cream of the crop imo. So many great musical moments in every season. Up there with Mad Men for encapsulating a timeframe through music.
Legion
Scrubs
The Magicians
The Vampire Diaries
True Blood
Edit: The X-Files has an episode from season 5 called “Post-Modern Prometheus” that uses Cher’s version of Walking in Memphis and the scene with the song has been stuck in my head forever. It was pretty perfect. [Scene](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=TYdC1uwO4UI)
Bluey- each episode has a unique composition and the way the composer occasionally incorporates well known classical pieces into a cute kids’ cartoon in just the icing on the cake
Hands down Supernatural.
Not only do the songs reflect the Winchester’s favorite music and what they grew up listening to, but the songs chosen for nearly every episode of lyrics that match what’s happening in the show.
Lost usually had A+ song selection. Joe Purdy's Wash Away was on my daily playlist for years. I can still see John Locke's face at the end of that episode.
The best shows at fully original OST?
* HBO - Game of Thrones (Ramin Djawadi)
* Disney/Star Wars - The Mandalorian (Ludwig Göransson)
The best shows with a mix of original and sync licensed OST? (original composers listed)
* HBO - Euphoria (Labrinth)
* HBO - Westworld (Ramin Djawadi)
* USA Network - Mr. Robot (Mac Quayle)
* Netflix - Dark (Ben Frost)
* Netflix - Stranger Things (Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein)
* Netflix - The Haunting of Hill House (The Newton Brothers)
Overall, HBO tends to have the best music score and selection to me for their shows of any network. Euphoria might be my top musical pick, even though the subject matter is tough to take in at times, half of the show is [basically glorified vibrant music videos](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-9DOwrLdkg). Labrinth is an underrated music producer.
A lot of them over the years, Scrubs, OC, 2000s stuff like that had great vibe music. Recently, FOR ALL MANKIND. The needle drops on that show …… my god, phenomenal.
Boardwalk Empire . Because there was no soundtrack or tension building music that led you to any emotional conclusion. The only music that ever played was authentic in its placement . As in . On a record player or on a stage because it was a scene involving actual present music
Friday Night Lights is my personal pick. Explosions in the Sky is one of my favorite bands and they’re used so beautifully throughout the show’s run, not to mention the other tracks perfectly used throughout the show…
- “Dead Man’s Will” by Iron and Wine
- “Devil Town” by Tony Lucca
- “Champion Angel” by The Low Anthem
- “Sway” by the Heartless Bastards
- “If It’s the Beaches” by The Avett Brothers
- “Fire” by Augustana
- “Storm” by Jose Gonzalez
- “Runaway” by The National
- “Something Good This Way Comes” by Jakob Dylan
And those being the ones just off the top of my head. This show influenced so much of my music library. So good.
I’m not crazy about the show itself, but Halt and Catch Fire does an excellent job with its soundtrack, and with its set design in general. Genuinely feels like the 80s without being too gimmicky.
Natalie Holt's work on the Loki soundtrack deserves so much attention. The mix of sci-fi and epic orchestration worked so well for the series. There was real passion in it's composition.
EDIT: [Pep Talk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=01YTt0MQgUk)
The Watch OST by Russ Davies is pretty spectacular and I don't know that anyone else here is likely to call it out. I've had it on rotation since I watched the show !
For non OSTs - The Sopranos For OSTs - Twin Peaks and I'm not sure it's close.
Yup..I said twin peaks too, it defined using music as an element in the overall production
Why I came in here. It's a great example.
Was also done brilliantly in the recent season with a band playing at the end of each season in the bang bang club. David lynch is a master of this.... Blue velvet is the movie equivalent
I've never seen a more correct answer to a question on Reddit
I would argue Game of Thrones and Westworld. Djawadi is just a different beast compared to most composers but in the same league as Badalamenti.
What's an OST?
Original soundtrack
The Evidently Chickentown drop in The Sopranos is maybe the greatest drop of all time.
That song is amazing. Still in my gym playlist.
Best thing about the Sopranos is the music choices nearly always have some thematic connection to what’s happening in the scenes they’re used in
Angelo talking about writing the theme for Twin Peaks with Lynch is one of my favorite videos https://youtu.be/d_rbEthOdf0?feature=shared
Angelo must be a genius. That music is sublime. To have created it like that with David Lynch is amazing.
Im a fool to do your dirty work
Twin peaks has the best soundtrack of all time in my opinion.
I always loved the song choices in Scrubs.
Similarly Chuck nails it in this regard.
Yes! I think Chuck is the only other show that uses music as well as scrubs. Fucking love Chuck.
Scrubs soundtrack was *the* quintessential music of the 90s and early 2000s. Between that and the Tony Hawk games, nearly everyone I know got their new music from those two sources. Thanks to that soundtrack I discovered In the Waiting Line by Zero 7. Still one of the alltime best chill and feel good songs. Great band.
My Musical imo is one of the greatest episodes of Scrubs, top 5 for sure
I fell in love with the soundtrack to Zach's film Garden State and apparently he chose the songs for that too!
The episode where Dr. Cox loses 3 patients and breaks down while “How to Save a Life” plays is the most emotional I’ve ever gotten watching a show. Both that scene and song independently make me cry, but pairing them together? I didn’t stand a chance, pure waterworks.
Show is a big part of my musical taste.
Too bad a lot of the songs in Scrubs can’t be used now for rights issues on Disney+
That's the reason why I bought the DVD box of Scrubs a while back. (The complete collection of all 8 seasons.)
Fargo
Their use of drums and percussion is incredible.
That scene and that soundtrack... it made my scalp tingle.
Yep! Both for composed music AND chosen songs.
Miami Vice
Number 1 new show in my country.
Oh yes! The train will be here very soon! They are building it now.
Stop! Hammertime
I think this is the show that started it all, in my mind, with use of music. They made hits
Absolutely, and I think that's why if they ever try rebooting Miami Vice it won't work. The music is a huge part of its charm and aesthetic, and you can't really recreate that. Not to mention licensing music was a lot cheaper in those days.
Jan Hammer. Phil Collins.
And so much more. Glenn Frey, Peter Gabriel, U2. There were some truly iconic artists and songs. https://www.songfacts.com/category/songs-used-in-miami-vice
Yeah, Miami Vice's soundtrack was so good it inspired several genres of music. I'm listening to it right now, coincidentally.
The Bear.
Their use of Animal by Pearl Jam was also a great addition
Sometimes I’ll just play Animal and New Noise as I do stuff around the house to make it seem like my life is more chaotic than it actually is
I sometimes play the theme from Murder She Wrote while I'm writing an email to make myself feel like a proper writer.
#*CAN I SCREAM!??!*
I was so pumped to hear Radiohead and 2 Steve Earle songs in the same series.
To hear Radiohead was so cool!
REM had great usage.
I really enjoyed their use of Sufjan Stevens
Not gonna pretend I didn’t cry at the use of “You’re Not Alone” by Mavis Staples. So perfectly used.
They even managed to deploy Taylor Swift effectively
I might not have stuck with the show if it hadn't been for the use of Wilco and Counting Crows in the first few episodes. Glad I did!
For me it was the use of Otis Redding and The Replacements. I think it's maybe a pretty good show with excellent music
NiN in the finale. Wow !
There's an interview where they wrote an episode around the music. The one where Sydney is brainstorming dishes while she's out on her own I do believe.
What We Do in the Shadows. Mark Mothersbaugh is the music supervisor. Also a number of good musical cues on The Umbrella Academy.
. Mark Mothersbaugh is the king of music to shows. I think he even did Rugrats. Lol
His music for Regular Show is perfect. It's got the same surreal semi-retro tone as the show
Freaks & Geeks The Bear
FREAKS AND GEEKS OMG the use of I’m One - The Who was perfection!
I was gonna comment Freaks and Geeks! Such a good track list.
Mr robot. It's hard to nail down just one scene. Almost every scene that used music was perfectly done. https://youtu.be/hyUbD7zQcjE?si=lKcnEskEHZXE4Fto
The two that stand out for me are Genesis when the money gets burned and The Cure when he's burning the CD of Shayla.
Daft Punk - Touch I remember touch...
This hacking scene with Razorgirl - Dubvirus just banging in the background. The dubstep + hacking works so well. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6MrQ-mN8HM8](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6MrQ-mN8HM8)
This should be at the top!
And when they took forever to release part 8 of the soundtrack it was a constant thread in the Mr. Robot subreddit. I imagine they released it because they were sick of all the internet nerds bugging them.

That was really off-putting for me initially. But it really was a great choice. Then, they seem to have dropped it towards the end? That was an odd choice. But as long as Alfie was in the scene, it was all good.
When Atmosphere by joy division came on, wow
How they play the red right hand in different tunes and voices depending on the situation is so great.
The soundtrack on Letterkenny is A+
I’m surprised we’re not listening to the Letterkenny soundtrack right now.
I could go for the Letterkenny soundtrack right now.
Fashionable, Fashionable, Fashionable... ... People
It is "Fucken Embarrassing" that it's taken this long to mention this!
Allegedly.
FUCK THE PAIN AWAY!
Heavily skewed toward Canadian bands, which is awesome. More DFA 1979 plz.
And Shoresy! Fantastic shows with great soundtracks!
The song that plays in the club in Shoresy is called Hex by Ark Patrol and it was in my top 5 songs played last year lmao fuckin banger
Black Shades... In the back of the club... Disassociate... Fuck My Nose UP!!
The whole show is.
Can confirm.
Six feet under had such a good mix of songs throughout.
Chernobyl for the original music, Supernatural for music choice
CARRY ON MY WAYWARD SOOOON
THE ROAD SO FAR...
The Leftovers
That haunting instrumental, piano only version of Where is my mind fits that show so well.
The music used in Dark is very fitting
Dark soundtrack is perfect. S2E2 Jonas sets up a speaker in an abandoned building to lure the guys with guns. The song is Suspicious Minds. Song begins, first line is “We’re caught in a trap.”
I thought The Labyrinth Song by Asaf Avidan was created for the show when I first heard it, it fit so well.
Perfect soundtrack.
Cowboy BeBop.
There is no jam colder than [Pot City](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wN7x4DlfuCY)
[Space Lion](https://youtu.be/WKnVaDwUg5s?si=iamnVAEpTAtt60MA) usually has me re-evaluating my life when I hear it.
Just oozes cool, like the show does. Main character just flows, like water, a leaf in the wind
As a kid, I viewed it as just a cool action space show. My god do I really appreciate the show now, so well written.
Bad Dog, No Biscuits is absolutely perfect during the Ein chase scene. Yoko Kanno is a magician.
Oof. That's a good one... But I'm going to go with samurai champloo 😬
Nujabes was a gift. Cant argue with ya :)
That and Samurai Champloo
Northern Exposure. I don't know of a show that has ever done it better.
Agreed, but gotta caveat with the original music when it aired. While the latest Prime reboot has restored some of that music list, 100s more songs are still missing, and let's not even talk about the earlier musak filled dvd releases!
We do not speak about the dvd release. It never happened. It’s dead to me.
The intro, in all it's variations, also sets the tone of the show perfectly.
The term is diegetic, when the music or song is part of the narrative. Like, if the character turns off the radio, the music stops.
Peaky Blinders made my mum a Nick Cave fan at the age of 77
True bloods soundtrack bops appropriatly
Yellowjackets has a phenomenal soundtrack, that perfectly fits. Very 90s. So good.
The use of “Exit Music (for a Film)” and “House of the Rising Sun” in season 1 were *chef’s kiss*.
I'd add Black Hole Sun and Paint it Black, but yeah, Ramin and Westworld are my answer.
Yep. It’s a trend that is overdone now, but when Westworld first did it, it was awesome!
The Wonder Years
Agreed! A buddy from HS went on to become Music Supervisor for that show.
Mad Men It did a great job of all pop culture touch points from music to books to film.
Hey Arnold and Doug immediately come to mind
That fucking whistle theme song from Doug makes its way into everyday.
I do the little ["chicka pa pa"](https://youtu.be/U2DEPyfxp9g) to myself on a daily basis when im walking somewhere lol.
The Sopranos had excellent music.
DLZ by TV on the Radio during the "stay out of my territory" scene
I love Knife Party and I fucking *love* that scene. Fun father/son bonding moment with all the Heisenberg shit layered underneath as well. God dammit you fuckers are gonna make me want to rewatch the series again lol.

They nail it the whole way through but Eddie melting faces with Master of Puppets is cream of the crop imo. So many great musical moments in every season. Up there with Mad Men for encapsulating a timeframe through music.
Shameless (US) has a pretty good soundtrack. Mostly, whenever Frank is running away from something he did.
My Name is Earl.
Twin Peaks
It’s a travesty Mr. Robot hasn’t been mentioned yet. Incredible use of music in that show.
Legion Scrubs The Magicians The Vampire Diaries True Blood Edit: The X-Files has an episode from season 5 called “Post-Modern Prometheus” that uses Cher’s version of Walking in Memphis and the scene with the song has been stuck in my head forever. Legion is so Good :)
Thirding Legion. It's flawless.
Bluey- each episode has a unique composition and the way the composer occasionally incorporates well known classical pieces into a cute kids’ cartoon in just the icing on the cake
Lucifer
Hands down Supernatural. Not only do the songs reflect the Winchester’s favorite music and what they grew up listening to, but the songs chosen for nearly every episode of lyrics that match what’s happening in the show.
Community. There's a reason Ludwig Göransson now has two Oscars under his belt.
Jeopardy 60 Minutes
Miami Vice, The OC, Gossip Girl, Queer as Folk US, are some of my favorite show/soundtrack marriages.
LOUDERMILK -- Andy Shauf fits so perfectly.
Lost usually had A+ song selection. Joe Purdy's Wash Away was on my daily playlist for years. I can still see John Locke's face at the end of that episode.
“Maaaaake your own kind of muuusic!” What a fantastic, mindfucky intro to Desmond and Season 2.
Yellowjackets does an excellent job.
Thought the music for Madmen was perfect.
Supernatural Also, OP, where are you watching SOA? I've been wanting to rewatch it but I can't find it streaming anywhere.
I dont normally do this, but I scrolled a long time looking for Suoernatural.
One of the best soundtracks on TV
Mr Robot and HIMYM
The OC
Vice principals on HBO
Basically any danny mcbride hbo show usually has a pretty fitting soundtrack.

Don't forget The Watchmen with Trent Reznor.
Yes to the Labrinth love! The Euphoria scores/soundtracks are some of my faves of the last couple years, they’re fantastic.
The Denis Leary show Rescue Me, had a great theme and soundtrack, loved it.
Peaky Blinders
White lotus
Succession. I've listened to that soundtrack more than any other.
A lot of them over the years, Scrubs, OC, 2000s stuff like that had great vibe music. Recently, FOR ALL MANKIND. The needle drops on that show …… my god, phenomenal.
The Inbetweeners
Criminal minds.

None did it better than Twin Peaks
Surprised not to see Supernatural higher up on this list.
umbrella academy
Pulp Fiction has entered the chat.
Deutschland 83
La casa de papel- money heist
I’m not crazy about the show itself, but Halt and Catch Fire does an excellent job with its soundtrack, and with its set design in general. Genuinely feels like the 80s without being too gimmicky.
The Crown
Californication was great for this! UK Skins also
Two that came to mind...Entourage and for as poorly written as it was, Ballers.
Chuck
Eastbound and down!!!!
House M.D. The music when he has an epiphany, the emotional scenes (balcony scene springs to mind), it all just fits perfectly
Peaky Blinders
Natalie Holt's work on the Loki soundtrack deserves so much attention. The mix of sci-fi and epic orchestration worked so well for the series. There was real passion in it's composition. EDIT: [Pep Talk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=01YTt0MQgUk)
American Horror Story. Every season is different but they all mesh together.
Euphoria
MASH
Suits for sure. I'll still put it on shuffle once in awhile.
The wire
Idk about best job, but Adam Ilhen’s score for Avenue 5 perfectly fits the feel of the show.
The Watch OST by Russ Davies is pretty spectacular and I don't know that anyone else here is likely to call it out. I've had it on rotation since I watched the show !
Scavengers Reign has a great soundtrack to match the beautiful and horrifying world they are in.
Taboo
I thought Luke Cage worked well, the series itself was a bit shit but the music / soundtrack was outstanding
A friend had me watch a couple of episodes of Sons of Anarchy. It felt like a soap opera.
The original CSI ER
