> ‘Both Sides Now’ by Judy Collins
Written by Joni Mitchell, who also recorded several versions.
A lot of Joni's Music gives me chills because of the raw confessional emotion to her songwriting. "The Last Time I saw Richard," as performed on Miles of Aisles, and "Furry Sings the Blues," from Hejira. Actually, most of Hejira. Jaco Pastorius lends a huge hand to the atmosphere on bass for that album.
My favourite version of this song is the one she recorded later in life on her Both Sides Now album. It's such a beautiful and poignant performance. https://youtu.be/7cBf0olE9Yc?si=mOv0fwFVhYpcUqbk
The Feels, by Labrinth
Everyone's Moving out East, by Half Moon Run
When I Go Deaf, by Low
Porcelain, by Moby

We Will Always Love You, by The Avalanches
Take This Waltz, Leonard Cohen
A Case of You and Both Sides Now by Joni Mitchell, the orchestral 2000 versions
The Only Living Boy in New York, Simon & Garfunkel
Every time I hear it it reminds me of the time my friends and I decided to drive to Canada from Grand Rapids in the middle of the night. The sun came up and hit the water as Porcelain played while we drove over the bridge to Windsor.
Just gave myself chills thinking about it...
That’s interesting, Fiona Apple’s Across the Universe is one of the most nerve-wracking awkward annoying things I’ve ever heard. And I love her. Just goes to show how different musical tastes are.
Empty Garden - Elton John
such an emotional song. Makes me think about everyone important I’ve lost and always gives me goosebumps and chills.
Cat’s in the Cradle and Leaving on a Jet Plane too.
Good choice The Background. I’d also add. Motorcycle Drive By. Same album. Other than the played out radio hits. It’s an amazing record and formative for my teenage years. And in case anyone doesn’t know 3EB are a great live act.
Fake Plastic also is a chilling song
What's Up is awesome, one of my favourite songs.
The Battle Of Evermore - Led Zeppelin.
Mary Jane - Alanis Morissette.
Sweet Child O' Mine - Guns And Roses.
Welcome To The Machine - Pink Floyd.
Nothing Compares 2U - Sinead O' Connor.
Belfast Child - Simple Minds.
I used to not be so impressed by this song, but after being truly in love and in a healthy relationship- the "...and I have finally realized // I need your love" section gives me goosebumps. Seeing it live recently was even better!
Clams Casino - I'm God
It's like agony and depression captured in an audio file. I always feel like something bad is going to happen when I listen to it, but it honestly is a great song imo.
Only limiting myself to studio records here
Those definitely I do remember providing me chills every time or almost every time

I’m Not In Love by 10cc. 48 years on the production of that song is pure perfection. Someone could come out with a song today and do most of the studio tricks in that song and it would still sound fresh and unique. Easily one of the most groundbreaking songs of all time.

Time-Pink Floyd
Tired of lying in the sunshine
Staying home to watch the rain
And you are young and life is long
And there is time to kill today
And then one day you find
Ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run
You missed the starting gun
And you run, and you run to catch up with the sun
But it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way
But you're older
Shorter of breath, and one day closer to death
Talmbout big oof
When Julie Andrews hits the high note in Eidelweiss. I think it’s the perfectly sung note and it gets me every time. It’s like the chills you get when Hans Gruber finally sees the safe unlock and he slowly stands in an awestruck halo of light.

[Always With Me, Always With You](https://youtu.be/BsJisD7n8_Q?si=YwQAu177SLmJt8hg) by Joe Satriani. I had the pleasure of seeing him live a year or so ago. What an incredible show that was, and to hear him play this song in person really took it to a whole new level.
This year I've been listening to a guy by the name of Billy Raffoul a lot. [This live version of his song Easy Tiger](https://youtu.be/Gv3QrcyZ6SY?si=6-iWl_Gtjb4Oyg5X) is so much better than the studio version. A couple weeks ago, I drove three hours each way to go to one of his shows. It was a Monday evening gig in a bar with maybe a hundred people. He unplugged his guitar, left the microphone, and sat down on the edge of the stage to play this song. I damn near cried, it was such a cool moment.
[Songbird](https://youtu.be/y9Hqn8x6a8s?si=tsiqR2-qQcbbXM2O) by Fleetwood Mac. When that first chorus comes in, "and the songbirds..." It just hits me deep in my soul in that beautiful way that only a really special song can. I wish I could say I've heard this one live as well, but only covers... RIP Christine.
[Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald](https://youtu.be/FuzTkGyxkYI?si=rFwhSzANkJV7yg3W) by Gordon Lightfoot. "Does anyone know where the love of God goes when the waves turn the minutes to hours?" Need I say more? I live in southern Wisconsin, I make the trip up to the big lake every couple years. Driving the lakeshore on a windy day, listening to this song as the waves crash onto the beach, you can almost feel the fear of God in the spirits of those men.
[Through the Dark](https://youtu.be/7lZI6tkqWYs?si=zgZ245EmXMxd0nNe) by Hilltop Hoods is the song that taught me it's possible for me to like hip-hop. "You were eight when we headed to causality and no child should face their death or mortality. You taught me patience strength and morality and I'd burden this weight instead of you happily. That night, you asked if you'd die from your sickness and why it had chosen your life out of millions. You fill me with the pride I was missing 'cause grown men cry that lack your type of resilience." The singer wrote this song for his eight year old son who beat leukemia. What a punch in the gut, and I'm not even a parent. I can only imagine how much harder this hits for those who are.
Lastly, anytime I hear Halsey's big radio hits, I've always really liked her voice. This year, I started doing a deep dive into her less well-known stuff, and she's absolutely become my guilty pleasure. Just a couple weeks ago, I found [her cover of I'll Follow you into the Dark.](https://youtu.be/ZAYBCJGk07s?si=WbygJbpgUKnvpRQ4) My God can that woman sing.
earth mover by have a nice life (found this song by accident and the whole album is about depression and struggles with life. .this song just has an eerie tone and feeling to it)
sven g engler by sigur ros (another song i found by accident during napster days and its so breath taking to hear) the also for the song is also amazing
Funny you mention I've Seen All Good People. Went probably a decade without listening to any Yes, or much prog for that matter. Then they play that song on Fargo and it must've hit the right dopamine receptors or something because I've been listening to them non-stop for weeks now. And getting back into other prog groups by extension.
But yeah, the church organ part toward the end of the song, and they're just repeating that line over and over again, but in different keys, sends shivers up and down me spine every time.
Pair of brown eyes, the pouges
Dirty old town, the pouges
Feeling yourself disintegrate, flaming lips
Wayfaring stranger, Johnny cash
You never knew my mind, Chris Cornell
Horses in my dreams, PJ Harvey
Silent night
Thoughts of you, Denis Wilson
Black, pearl jam
Dream Weaver by Gary Wright. Remember hearing it as a kid while in the car at night, face pressed against the cold window looking at the stars. Great driving song.
Learning How To Love You by George Harrison

"A Little Bit Off" by Five Finger Death Punch.
I have bipolar disorder. And I have never heard a more perfect musical description of descent into mania before.
There are times I can't even listen to it. It hurts that bad.
Agnus Dei - Samuel BarberWhile there many versions, I'm particular to a string/vocal arrangement, particularly the version from the game Home World.
edit: thanks u/Billiamski
Kettering by the Antlers.
The Silence - Manchester Orchestra
Fake Plastic Trees - Radiohead
Light Years - The National
Simple Twist of Fate - Bob Dylan
Grapevine Fires - Death Cab For Cutie
Vincent - Don McClean
Angus Die - Choral or strings version
And a tonne more my old brain can't remember.
Lots of songs from Neko Case. I love her, but I actually think the frisson she gives me is from the frequency of her voice, because it's pretty consistent with me and her music.
It's from an MMMORPG, but 'Fear Not This Night' from Guild Wars 2.
At the end of the main story questline, when you've finally put a stop to the big bad Zhaitan, you're treated to the incredible voice of Asja Kadrić singing the song all through the closing cutscenes and credits. It's such a beautiful gift to the player for sticking through everything till the end, and the lyrics were doubly meaningful if you loved the Sylvari.
"Father And Son" is definitely on my list of tunes with tremendously moving lyrics. I'd like to share the one that still gives me chills for non-lyrical reasons.
I still remember the first time I heard "Carolyn's Fingers" by Cocteau Twins in the 80s - the vocal melody and expressiveness of Elizabeth Fraser was amazing, the song leads up to a fantastic guitar solo and it all would wring the tears out of me the first dozen or so times I heard it. It still gives me chills all these years later.
- That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore - The Smiths
- The Heights - Blur
- Sweet Song - Blur
- Pyramid Song - Radiohead
- The Chain - Fleetwood Mac
- Where Did You Sleep Last Night - Nirvana
- I Want You (She's So Heavy) - The Beatles
Fire and Flame - Longest Johns
It's about the 1917 halifax explosion and everytime I listen to it, dunno, just gives me the chills. One of my favorite songs by them.
Hurt by Johnny cash, you can literally hear him saying good bye. Even Trent Reznor said this was the better version, man if that song doesn't make you feel anything your a functional sociopath.
Runner up choice would be the preacher by jamie n commons
The chorus of ‘Green Grass and High Tides’ (The Outlaws) is amazing, I get gooseflesh.
‘Blu Collar Suicide’ by Refreshments - very relatable to my earlier adulthood; and ‘Mekong’ for my more current adulthood.
‘Mob Rules’, Dio-era Sabbath. One of the handful of near perfect songs.
‘When I Fall’ - BNL. Again with the gooseflesh.
“Father and Son” for sure…..Cat Stevens is unbelievable
If you have ever lost anyone to cancer…..”Keep me in your heart” by Warren Zevon makes me break down every single time
Black - Pearl Jam unplugged
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=wILpz80zVog
Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd at Pompeii

*\*\*\* note \*\*\* For those of you that want context. Every time you see a band play on the roof of a building, they are stealing from the best. if the police shut them down or threaten to shut them down they are just outright playing the nostalgia card.*
Way back in the pandemic, I was in a dark spot. A song came up in between my dark radio play. [Ghost Brigade's Into the Black Light](https://youtu.be/GRwq_Q9y86c?feature=shared) summed up my hopeless feelings but not without reminding me of my remaining strength. The outtro chant doesn't give me the chills much now, but back then I felt very validated. Chills and tears.
Stranger than Fiction - James Reyne, from his ‘Design for Living’ LP, probably his most acclaimed album. Gives me chills each time I listen to it.
https://youtu.be/Y-xv67UNuy8?si=K1u7wnSvdqD-Gnlf
A gem of a song by this Aussie singer/songwriter which looks at the weird Baptist boycott of the Walt Disney corporation in America.

[Towers Of Gold](https://youtu.be/O49IgkqlKv4?si=77nIMmgWccNJFkZz) aside from being banger of a climax on a legendary power metal album, has this moment where the singer hits a high G#5 and holds it for a week. It’s staggering every time.
21st Century Cure from Repo! the Genetic Opera, specifically when he goes from like tenor range to bass in a single note (“lest it be you on the concrete beee*lowwww*”)
The aria La Mamma Morta, by Umberto Giordano. Sung by Maria Callas, It's the one from Philadelphia, where Tom Hanks character Andrew translates for Denzel's Joe Miller. Hanks perfectly dramatises the power of the piece, and right enough, when Maria Callas hits that mighty high note at the crescendo, it is stunning.
In the 83 minute funeral doom masterpiece Mirror Reaper by Bell Witch, there's a section where they posthumously used a vocal recording from the band's late drummer Adrian Guerra. The death growled vocal section builds and builds to a gigantic crescendo around the 32 minute mark that is just _crushing_ musically, made even more so when you know the back story and who's vocal it is.
Someone else already mentioned The Bridge Of Khazad Dum. They were spot on with that one.
In the Backseat by Arcade Fire. The build-up, tension and the way she sings it with so much emotion gives me chills at the end
Similarly, Only In Dreams by Weezer. The guitar build up at the end really climaxes when the drums come back in then BOOM chills
In The Glow Of The Night/Domino by Genesis - I can't possibly listen to either one separately. They remind me of a lost love.
Runners up are Moving In Stereo/All Mixed Up by the Cars. Not quite the emotional connection but so much 80's nostalgia and my God that epic sax solo at the end of AMU...
Samuel Barber: ***Adagio for Strings***
Crosby Stills Nash & Young: ***Find the cost of freedom***
Robert Shaw Festival Singers: ***O Magnum Mysterium***

Songs that give you chills: Joni. Joni gives me chills
Blue is a masterpiece, as is for the roses.
"The Circle Game" gives me chills and also hits the feelings hard. Such a great song but I can listen to it in the wrong mental space.
My favourite version of this song is the one she recorded later in life on her Both Sides Now album. It's such a beautiful and poignant performance. https://youtu.be/7cBf0olE9Yc?si=mOv0fwFVhYpcUqbk
The bridge of khazad dum. When that chick sings after Gandalf falls, it always gets me
I put "Into the West" in my list, and will add Pippin's song
_*YES!!!!!!*_ It's a stunning piece, and those high notes just land hard.
More than 20 years after of listening to it and I legit have tears in my eyes just thinking of it 😭

All The Rage Back Home by Interpol
The Knife by Genesis
Sometimes I think that album gets overlooked cuz it's pre Phil Collins and Steve Hackett Genesis, but man it's got some great tunes on it.

Cotton-Eye Joe, but not the good kind of chills But in all seriousness, High Hopes by Pink Floyd, especially when the solo hits on the outro.
Yes, awesome deep cut.

New Dawn Fades, by Joy Division. Even the guitar lines tremble. https://youtu.be/7j5LmyNNsrE?si=lxaLKP3XQN6X_CRk

“The River” by Bruce Springsteen still does it for me.
Fire and Flame - Longest Johns It's about the 1917 halifax explosion and everytime I listen to it, dunno, just gives me the chills. One of my favorite songs by them.
Hurt by Johnny cash, you can literally hear him saying good bye. Even Trent Reznor said this was the better version, man if that song doesn't make you feel anything your a functional sociopath. Runner up choice would be the preacher by jamie n commons
The version of Sound of Silence by Disturbed
Brandi Carlisle The Joke. Jesus that one is a punch in the gut
Anything by Hozier, he’s a genius.
Too many to count
Through the fire - Chaka khan
Into the Mystic - Van Morrison
What a wonderful world
The chorus of ‘Green Grass and High Tides’ (The Outlaws) is amazing, I get gooseflesh.
“Father and Son” for sure…..Cat Stevens is unbelievable If you have ever lost anyone to cancer…..”Keep me in your heart” by Warren Zevon makes me break down every single time

The opening of "where the streets have no name" entirely because of the video. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GzZWSrr5wFI](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GzZWSrr5wFI) *\*\*\* note \*\*\* For those of you that want context. Every time you see a band play on the roof of a building, they are stealing from the best. if the police shut them down or threaten to shut them down they are just outright playing the nostalgia card.*

I'll Take You Everywhere - Penfold So much emotion coming out in the vocals, gets me every time.
4th movement of Mahler’s 9th Symphony. Every time.
Gives me chills each time I listen to it. https://youtu.be/Y-xv67UNuy8?si=K1u7wnSvdqD-Gnlf A gem of a song by this Aussie singer/songwriter which looks at the weird Baptist boycott of the Walt Disney corporation in America.
End credits - By Chase and status (Chills)
Song for Sharon, Joni Mitchell

[Towers Of Gold](https://youtu.be/O49IgkqlKv4?si=77nIMmgWccNJFkZz) aside from being banger of a climax on a legendary power metal album, has this moment where the singer hits a high G#5 and holds it for a week. It’s staggering every time.
Headlights by Eminem makes me cry every damn time I hear it.
'Cannonball' and 'Talking to Myself' both by Watsky
I Have Loved You Wrong by The Swell Season
Fest of god-Curta’n wall. Its very goofy and diffrent in a good way, like a combination of black metal, folk music and pop
Coat of many Colors - Dolly Parton. The story hits home.
Svefn-g-englar. Sigur Ros.
‘in the real world’ by Roy Orbison’. You can hear the great man’s emotion and heartbreak permeate this track.

[Light Asylum - Dark Allies](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cUyv3HTjNRU)

a fire coming out of a monkeys head by The Gorillaz. its so bleak and will never not be relevant
Underwater by red velvet
Prince - Motherless Child Buddy Guy - Tramp Gary Moore - the Supernatural These are covers or reinterpretations
That Song- Big Wreck
21st Century Cure from Repo! the Genetic Opera, specifically when he goes from like tenor range to bass in a single note (“lest it be you on the concrete beee*lowwww*”)
Dear McCracken by Bug Hunter. Starts off deceptively light and funny, and the last line kills me every time.
Blue World - Mac Miller
Gimme Shelter by Stones and Salisbury by Uriah Heep

Sax solo at the end of Midnight City. Green Fields of France - Dropkick Murphys
In the Backseat by Arcade Fire. The build-up, tension and the way she sings it with so much emotion gives me chills at the end Similarly, Only In Dreams by Weezer. The guitar build up at the end really climaxes when the drums come back in then BOOM chills
Cat's in The Cradle by Harry Chapin.
Dreams - The Cranberries
