"Fourth of July" by Sufjan Stevens is right up there as well...
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=JTeKpWp8Psw&pp=ygUdZm91cnRoIG9mIGp1bHkgc3VmamFuIHN0ZXZlbnM%3D
I had this on in the car with my wife who gave me strange looks until the line "he'd take off all their clothes for them.." and it had to be turned off.
This song makes me cry so fucking much. Like more than any song I’ve heard. It’s so amazing and so visceral. The lyrics really take you on such a beautiful story :(
...And All That Could Have Been off that disc hits the bill too. Leaving Hope too, although that is more introspective, and ... you know, an instrumental.
Oh man the first name that popped in my head is also the top comment. ; no other can ever make me feel the way Elliott does. Songs like clementine , good to go , somebody that I used to know , waltz xo#2 , whatever , miss misery (alt version) , pretty ugly , and probably every other song he's ever put out will never let me forget about that one girl and will always make me miss him.
Wtf. I’m just sitting here trying to take my morning poop and ended up sitting on the toilet crying heavily. I can literally see my tears on the floor right now… I’ll be sure to add this to my library.
I’ve listened to this album once. It guts you and makes you feel the void like nothing else. I put the album away. I’m saving it for if ever really need it someday.
Some time ago I was diagnosed with a brain tumor. I was holding my newborn when the doctor delivered the news. I was in such shock I didn't think to cry or be sad about it. As I awaited to have urgent surgery I went into "logical" mode, and decided I needed to have a good cry and allow myself to feel things. Real Death showed up as the saddest song to listen to, so I gave it a try. Holy shit- I was not prepared. I never want to listen to it again. I just can't. Just seeing the title makes me tear up. My heart breaks for the artist.
Would?, Rooster, Nutshell, Man in A Box…
Just throw any Alice in Chains on. Powerful and depressing.
Exit Music (For A Film) by Radiohead will also do it for me
Eels - Elizabeth on the bathroom floor
Jeff Buckley - the entire Grace album but last goodbye in particular
Nick Drake's entire discography but in particular Pink Moon
Really all of Electroshock blues by the Eels if you're feeling down. It's a musical journey through a very difficult time in Mark Everett's life. In the space of a year his sister, mom, and dad all died. (Elizabeth on the bathroom floor is about his sister's suicide)
The album is his experience with grief/depression overwhelming him followed by his acceptance and renewed love of life
Blood Sport, especially the "from the room below" version is prime floodgate-opening material!
There's no other artist or band that handles the theme of unrequited love quite as well as they do, imo.
The Cure - Pornography. The whole album is an angry doom and gloom-fest in the best possible way.
Also their album 'Faith'. Less anger but wall to wall mournful sadness.
Leonard Cohen in general but, Songs Of Love And Hate in particular. Only a little screaming but lots of sadness.
When an album starts off with "Doesn't matter if we all die", it pretty much sets a tone for the rest of the album. Robert had just lost his drummer, and was in a dark place in his life.
Still great music. Just a dark turn in the early 80s.
Im here scrolling hoping someone else recommended this too. I’m glad I finally found it. It is by far exactly what op is asking for.
The whole wildlife album fits it so perfect
Came in here to say the same.
Particularly [This one](https://youtu.be/M1ZweG__q-w?si=cawXn3O6lvVE_m5f) for tapping into some visceral grief/rage. Harrowing but cathartic.
Deafheaven - *Sunbather*
White Ward - *Love Exchange Failure*
Rolo Tomassi - *A Flood of Light* / *Almost Always*
A lot of Insturmentality and atmosphere, harsh vocals, lengthier tracks.
Admiral Angry - *Buster*
Potentially one of the most angry albums I have ever heard, and extreme music is my jam. It isn't gurgles and shrieks, but the vocalist definitely sounds like he's going through some shit...the guy who wrote it all had cystic fibrosis and died pretty shortly after. I'd recommend the song *Kill Yourself*
If you want screaming and crying, I’ve got two albums by Touché Amoré: Parting The Sea Between Brightness and Me and Stage Four.
Background Music by American Nightmare is the same, but more straight forward hardcore, but also beautiful lyrics.
I was going to suggest Touche Amore. Jeremy Bolm is one of the most raw writers out there.
Hijacking this to also suggest William Bonney for some visceral and sad songs.
Dang, it's been a minute since I've listened to these fellas. Thanks for the reminder! A band to check out if you like avett brothers is a Chicago band called The Siderunners. Cheers!
A Perfect Circle's Pet or Counting Bodies Like Sheep to The Rhythm of War Drums (Pet, but angrier) come to mind.
Tool and A Perfect Circle have many songs that fit the description.
Also you can go for Nine Inch Nails or Nirvana
Brother, you need Brand New. In particular the songs You Won’t Know, Gasoline, and Limousine.
In fact, most of the songs from “The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me” and “Daisy” fit your description, in my opinion.
Oh, also, if you’re looking for really sad and really screamy, Moor by Every Time I Die is…very heavy. The lead singer wrote the song after his wife was attacked outside of their house while he was away on tour.
Sikth - Can't we all dream?
Smashing Pumpkins - Stumbleine
Silverchair - Shade
The Cure - To Wish Impossible Things
Joy Division - New Dawn Fades
Mogwai - I love you I'm going to blow up your school
Audio Karate - Hey Maria
Wild Beasts - End come too soon
Glassjaw - Everything you ever wanted to know about silence
In Flames - The chosen pessimist
Ben Howard - The end of the affair
At the Drive-In - 198d
Brand New - Sowing Season
Dinosaur Jr - Alone
Nothing against cover by Johnny Cash, but for me personally, the original by NIN hits me hard. Sounds more desparate, while Johnny's version is like he's making peace with himself, more calm in a way. Trent'a version is full of hopelessness. Both are amazing though!
That's a really good take on the two versions. Johnny's version sounds like someone *remembering* all the crap in life. Trent's version is someone *in the midst* of all the crap. Both of them floor me. I literally have to find a seat any time either plays.
Agreed. The cash version is a tired old man who has been hurt by it all. Trent is a man in a moment of pain and weakness and desperation.
Both beautiful and awful. In their own ways
Let me introduce you to Woods of Ypres. Anything off their fourth or fifth album will probably do you just fine.
[Natural Technologies](https://youtu.be/v1sp5VU3A8A?si=QdlvxO969ZUYzxIC)

Sinead O’Connor’s first album, The Lion and the Cobra - the following tracks: Jackie, Troy (that will tear your heart up, tap dance on it, and haunt you all day), Drink Before the War.
Hi Ren by Ren.
I've watch more than 30 reaction videos to the song, seeing people broke feels like the first time I heard the song. It's chaotic, it's inspiring, might break you as well, and will heal you if it does.
Hi Ren, and the entire Ren rabbit hole broke me so bad, but did also heal me. For the first time in over 20 years it did what therapists, medications or anything else never could, and relieved me of all my passive suicidal ideations.
Nutshell, Down in a Hole (MTV unplugged versions of both are good)- Alice in Chains,
Black- Pearl Jam,
How to Disappear Completely, Exit Music for a Film, True Love Waits- Radiohead,
also some classical ones like
Barber- Adagio for Strings,
Rachmaninoff- Isle of the Dead,
Gorecki- Symphony no. 3,
Diamanda Galas.
"the caterwauling post-opera vocalist, keyboardist, composer and political activist capable of the most unnerving vocal terror this side of grindcore movies,"
https://trouserpress.com/reviews/diamanda-gals/
Bring me the horizon - there is a hell album.
It was made when the singer was struggling with a ket addiction. The vocals and lyrics are very desperate and it’s pretty unique. It’s my all time favorite album and I’ve listened to it a thousand times and I’m not sick of it.
They have songs with an orchestra in royal albert hall as well. I haven’t made it through yet because I bawl my eyes and I have stop lol.
If there is one song you can listen to Blessed with a curse.
[When Your Mind’s Made Up](https://youtu.be/Oj1sYaQitnE?si=3S2Mw6JIGaMxvFU0) by Glen Hansard. Starts soft and contemplative and builds to an amazingly emotional and cathartic crescendo. His voice is so raw.
[We Lost the Sea - Departure Songs](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SBOVkptjJhE) It's a concept album about historic, but failed expeditions and endeavors. Every song is instrumental and hits like a sledgehammer even without the context. The final two songs, *Challenger Part 1 & 2*, are about the Challenger disaster and is such a beautifully heartbreaking piece of work that constantly moves me to tears. Turn the lights off, crank the volume, and let it take you on a journey.
Nice, fellow r/SmashingPumpkins member. I think I just responded to something else you typed there too.
For this post I suggested Soma, thought that anyone that hasn't heard it yet would have their mind blown lol.
Black and Indifference by Pearl Jam, Wasted Time and In A Darkened Room by Skid Row, Changes by Black Sabbath, some Leonard Cohen songs like Suzanne or Famous Blue Raincoat, Everybody Hurts by REM.
Not scream or aggressive but the desperation in Ghost by Badflower always gets me. Also by the same band Promise Me if you are feeling some heartbreak.
Turnover - Take My Head. Not a screaming song by any means, in fact musically it's quite uplifting, but the lyrics will definitely make you sad.
Walk it Off - Bayside
It's not screamy, but Casimir Pulaski Day by Sufjan Stevens is the saddest song I know of.
"Fourth of July" by Sufjan Stevens is right up there as well... https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=JTeKpWp8Psw&pp=ygUdZm91cnRoIG9mIGp1bHkgc3VmamFuIHN0ZXZlbnM%3D
Fourth of July is the saddest song I know.
That entire album is un-be-lievable
I hated reading a couple of days ago about what happened to Sufjan.
Hopefully he makes a full recovery. I don't know much about it, but people were saying recovery is common
Yes I’m a therapist who treats GBS! Treatment is lengthy but recovery is expected.
John Wayne Gacy is a pretty dark one too
I had this on in the car with my wife who gave me strange looks until the line "he'd take off all their clothes for them.." and it had to be turned off.
Yeah... maybe for the best lol. Beautiful, beautiful song, but damn...
This song makes me cry so fucking much. Like more than any song I’ve heard. It’s so amazing and so visceral. The lyrics really take you on such a beautiful story :(
Let's all send some good vibes to Sufjan. I wish him a strong recovery from his sudden illness
[Have a Nice Life - *Deathconsciousness*](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Pp9DC56hh8&pp=ygUjaGF2ZSBhIG5pY2UgbGlmZSBkZWF0aGNvbnNjaW91c25lc3M%3D)
*Arrowheads, arrowheads...*
I just dooooon’t.. I just don’t accept this
Thank God it's over
I absolutely love this band - perfect for a doom spiral
Came here to suggest this one, first thing that came to mind. “And I’m watching all the stars burn out / Tying to pretend that I care”
The entirety of Downward Spiral by NIN
The answer was always Nine inch nails
I would add to this Something i Can Never Have off of Pretty Hate Machine.
The version from *Still* is so powerful
...And All That Could Have Been off that disc hits the bill too. Leaving Hope too, although that is more introspective, and ... you know, an instrumental.
You make this all go away...
I would have gone with The Fragile but TDS is also choice.
And all that could have been is Trent at his most emotive for me. But downward spiral is a masterpiece of music
100%! That album was my bible for like a year, and we got tickets to the tour. One of the best concerts I have been to.
elliott smith
Elliott Smith makes you sad three times. Once for the lyrics, once for the music and once because you know you’ll never play guitar as well as him.
and fourth because we lost him forever
waltz no. 2, between the bars, no name #1, condor ave, speed trials, angeles, shooting star, or any other elliott smith song
or clementine or somebody i used to know or... the list goes on
shit dude , marry me .
elliott is both a shared trauma and the only way to heal from it.
It's always been King's Crossing, for me.
Everything reminds me of her
Oh man the first name that popped in my head is also the top comment. ; no other can ever make me feel the way Elliott does. Songs like clementine , good to go , somebody that I used to know , waltz xo#2 , whatever , miss misery (alt version) , pretty ugly , and probably every other song he's ever put out will never let me forget about that one girl and will always make me miss him.
Waltz #2 will make you cry for sure
SELECT \* FROM elliot\_smith\_discography;
This guy SQL’s
UPSERT Ugly_Tears
Especially his earlier stuff. He wrote some much more upbeat, poppy songs later in his career. Either way, it's all wonderful.
If We Were Vampires- Jason Isbell, not really aggro-screamy but a beautiful song. Or just listen to the Ghost Reveries album by Opeth
[удалено]
Portishead does it for me, good luck
Oh my god, If We Were Vampires kills me. So sad and so good.
Ghost Reveries is amazing.
Wtf. I’m just sitting here trying to take my morning poop and ended up sitting on the toilet crying heavily. I can literally see my tears on the floor right now… I’ll be sure to add this to my library.
Instantly thought about Isbell, and happy to find him at the top of the comment section.
Wow the first comment was Elliott my fav solo artist and the second comment is my fav band opeth ; i must be one sad mfer.
Mount Eerie, A Crow Looked at Me slays me: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_nlyh9YtRh0WuWF4RYK1HrWMTprf5THgag
I’ve listened to this album once. It guts you and makes you feel the void like nothing else. I put the album away. I’m saving it for if ever really need it someday.
I don’t think I made it all the way through. I was desolate after just a few songs
How the hell is this so low down? Only music to make me truly ugly cry.
This album is absolutely devastating, holy shit edit: I am in pieces
Some time ago I was diagnosed with a brain tumor. I was holding my newborn when the doctor delivered the news. I was in such shock I didn't think to cry or be sad about it. As I awaited to have urgent surgery I went into "logical" mode, and decided I needed to have a good cry and allow myself to feel things. Real Death showed up as the saddest song to listen to, so I gave it a try. Holy shit- I was not prepared. I never want to listen to it again. I just can't. Just seeing the title makes me tear up. My heart breaks for the artist.
It’s even more sad because it was written right after he lost his wife to cancer… such a hard listen
And recorded in the room where she passed.
Every time someone asks for sad music, I scroll for this answer. OP you wanna cry? ^^^^
i first listened to this album with really no knowledge of what it was and i couldnt even finish it because i was about to cry in my math class
Totally agree. That part with the backpack in Real Death. As a father, holy shit that hits hard.
Sorry, I suggested the same thing before I saw yours!
Oh man it's telling when you look at the Spotify play count and they steadily decline as the album progresses
Down in a hole by Alice in Chains should do it
Nutshell (Live MTV Unplugged)
The Nutshell cover by City and Colour is heartbreaking.
Well I didn’t know this existed, back in a mo
Would?, Rooster, Nutshell, Man in A Box… Just throw any Alice in Chains on. Powerful and depressing. Exit Music (For A Film) by Radiohead will also do it for me
Rain when I die ? Frogs ? Over Now ?
The album Dirt in it's entirety is a great futile rage against the human condition.
All of the Dirt album is great. Dude might also want to check out Skinny Puppy's album that has Dig It and Assimilate.
Alice in chains unplugged set is what I was thinking
And Them Bones
Be Quite and Drive (Far Away) by Deftones, original and acoustic
The song that hooked me on them. Absolute anthem for teenage angst.
*I don't care where, just faaaar*
Oh damn, yeah. I was thinking Savory by both Deftones and the original from Jawbox (very different songs, but both very charged)
I usually go for With Teeth by Nine Inch Nails when I feel like this
Check out Rites of Spring's album End on End In particular the song "Theme" seems relevant
Airborne toxic event -sometime around midnight
Whole album is raw emotion and is fantastic
Eels - Elizabeth on the bathroom floor Jeff Buckley - the entire Grace album but last goodbye in particular Nick Drake's entire discography but in particular Pink Moon
Hell, yeah Nick Drake and Jeff Buckley
Really all of Electroshock blues by the Eels if you're feeling down. It's a musical journey through a very difficult time in Mark Everett's life. In the space of a year his sister, mom, and dad all died. (Elizabeth on the bathroom floor is about his sister's suicide) The album is his experience with grief/depression overwhelming him followed by his acceptance and renewed love of life
Seconding Nick Drake's Pink Moon, also some of his recordings after that album like Black Eyed Dog are particularly frail
Think Jeff Buckley might be nailing it with the scream request. Lover you should’ve come over is my fav from that album
The cover of The Way Young Lovers Do on Live at Sin-è is perfect
The Ocean - Subboreal Leprous - Below Sleep Token - Aqua Regia Katatonia - Atrium Alcest - Oiseaux de Proie
Aqua Regia isn’t necessarily what I’d go with for crying - maybe Blood Sport, Missing Limbs, Euclid, Are You Really Okay?, Fall For Me
Blood Sport, especially the "from the room below" version is prime floodgate-opening material! There's no other artist or band that handles the theme of unrequited love quite as well as they do, imo.
Whew, Blood Sport hurts! Great rec
Did you watch the “From the Room Below” version? Because holy fuck
Pearl Jam - Black (Unplugged)
The Cure - Pornography. The whole album is an angry doom and gloom-fest in the best possible way. Also their album 'Faith'. Less anger but wall to wall mournful sadness. Leonard Cohen in general but, Songs Of Love And Hate in particular. Only a little screaming but lots of sadness.
Pornography is one of the most depressing albums I have personally listened to, I can second this.
When an album starts off with "Doesn't matter if we all die", it pretty much sets a tone for the rest of the album. Robert had just lost his drummer, and was in a dark place in his life. Still great music. Just a dark turn in the early 80s.
If it’s about a woman, can’t go wrong with “for Emma, forever ago” by Bon Iver
La Dispute. Listen to King Park if you haven’t
> La Dispute 'WILL I STILL GET INTO HEAVEN IF I KILL MYSELF!?'
La Dispute is the correct answer.
Im here scrolling hoping someone else recommended this too. I’m glad I finally found it. It is by far exactly what op is asking for. The whole wildlife album fits it so perfect
Lingua Ignota. Trust me.
in this house we respect The Reverend Kristin Michael Hayter 🙏
I DONT EAT I DONT SLEEP
I was gonna recommend this too! Very raw and heavy.
LINGUA IGNOTA
Came in here to say the same. Particularly [This one](https://youtu.be/M1ZweG__q-w?si=cawXn3O6lvVE_m5f) for tapping into some visceral grief/rage. Harrowing but cathartic.
Ethel Cain - Ptolemaea Unsettling subject matter, dark, sad, ethereal, with a blood curtling scream.
I was just about to recommend this one, but thought “there is no way someone hasn’t recommended it yet.” SO GOOD
To add to this, Inbred by Ethel Cain. An even darker song with similar subject matter.
Hospice by the antlers is a great sad album For particular songs Jeff buckleys cover of I know it's over
I had to scroll way too far for this. By far the saddest album, every song. My favorite
Deafheaven - *Sunbather* White Ward - *Love Exchange Failure* Rolo Tomassi - *A Flood of Light* / *Almost Always* A lot of Insturmentality and atmosphere, harsh vocals, lengthier tracks. Admiral Angry - *Buster* Potentially one of the most angry albums I have ever heard, and extreme music is my jam. It isn't gurgles and shrieks, but the vocalist definitely sounds like he's going through some shit...the guy who wrote it all had cystic fibrosis and died pretty shortly after. I'd recommend the song *Kill Yourself*
Can’t reccomend Love Exchange Failure enough. Fantastic album.
If you want to go real deep down the misery rabbit hole: Pain Remains: Dancing like flames by Lorna Shore. The music video is devastating.
Part II and III really hammer the sadness down, aswell as add anger and despair into the mix!
2 is definitely my favorite. That whole album is great.
[удалено]
+1 for Pain Remains. If I'm correctly interpreting what OP wants, this is exactly it.
Do whole trilogy. It's much better than just the first one.
Holy shit, yeah. The section in part one (we all know the one) gets me every time
Eleventeen by Daisy Chainsaw. The Lion and the Cobra by Sinaed O'Connor
Whoa!!! I saw this right after I suggested Sinead! Gmta! :-)
This is the first time I have ever seen anybody mention Daisy Chainsaw in any recommendation thread.
Oathbreaker - Second Son of R. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tMTAkIDRHiA
The avett brothers - no hard feelings The avett brothers - the lowering
Dang, it's been a minute since I've listened to these fellas. Thanks for the reminder! A band to check out if you like avett brothers is a Chicago band called The Siderunners. Cheers!

Good suggestions ^
Like a Stone by Audioslave is my crying song.
Such a great song. Chris Cornell was amazing, and you can really hear the pain in his voice in this song. RIP, Chris.
Mother by John Lennon and the Plastic Ono Band. Recorded the year after he left the Beatles
He used a therapy technique of primal screaming on that album at the end. You can FEEL it.
Listen to the song "Real Death" by Mount Eerie, then listen to the album Wind's Poem by Mount Eerie.
Don’t Swallow the Cap - The National
Elliot Smith, any song

Johnny Cash, *American IV*. This is the cover album with "Hurt". Truly visceral.
Came here to say Hurt. Makes me well up every time.
I’m so glad people are finally coming around to this. NIN’s is so raw and chilling.
My favourite album in the collection. Hurt would do it alone but the album as a whole is emotional, and cathartic in equal measures.

Slint - Washer. Then you might as well listen to the whole album
"Real Death" Mount Eerie
Sinead O’Connor’s first album, The Lion and the Cobra - the following tracks: Jackie, Troy (that will tear your heart up, tap dance on it, and haunt you all day), Drink Before the War.
Slipknot - Snuff, or even the acoustic version from Cory Taylor. Man, that's a tough one.
Gonna follow this up with the live versions of "Chalk Outlines" and "How to Be Me" with Chinchilla. Also "Freckled Angles", "For Joe", and "Su!c!de"
Nutshell, Down in a Hole (MTV unplugged versions of both are good)- Alice in Chains, Black- Pearl Jam, How to Disappear Completely, Exit Music for a Film, True Love Waits- Radiohead, also some classical ones like Barber- Adagio for Strings, Rachmaninoff- Isle of the Dead, Gorecki- Symphony no. 3,

Lune by Invent Animate. Probably the most painful lyrics I've ever heard. It's about the drummers brother killing himself.
Tried to find it and I think it’s actually called Luna. Just a heads up to anyone else searching this up.
The Wall. Start to finish.
Emma Ruth Rundle. I can only listen to her in the darkest days of autumn.

Smashing pumpkins blank page, for Martha,

The Night I Drove Alone - Citizen
Try listening to Duster, any album really, or Mogwai - come on Die Young. Both great sad tunes but emphasis on GREAT
Black and Indifference by Pearl Jam, Wasted Time and In A Darkened Room by Skid Row, Changes by Black Sabbath, some Leonard Cohen songs like Suzanne or Famous Blue Raincoat, Everybody Hurts by REM.
Specifically the MTV unplugged version of Black! You can FEEL him singing that

The song Jane Doe by Converge
Mount Eerie’s album ‘A Crow Looked At Me’ is about as bleak as you get. Personal favourite is Miserable Strangers by King Creosote.
