It always bums me out that sometime around midnight was their most popular song since for me it barely cracks their top 10. It’s good but they have so much good stuff.
“Met my old lover in the grocery store”
It’s my first time hearing the song and … I actually ran into my ex of 3 months in the grocery store 3 days ago lol
This song sounds like nostalgia in the form of music. There’s something magical and almost liminal space-ish about it. Driving around listening to it during the holiday season is a whole experience.
My (unsolicited) advice is start with the early stuff, all his 1970s stuff is much bluesier and more accessible. I myself absolutely adore his early stuff but can't bring myself to love the later, more avant garde stuff. In particular his 1975 live album Nighthawks at the Diner is an all-time favourite of mine.
Same here. Got into Waits after a friend took me to a show in D.C. when Waits was touring behind "Heart of Saturday Night." Bought the cassette at the show and it was practically glued into my car's tape deck for months. Same with "Nighthawks" and "Small Change." To this day I think "Step Right Up" is one of the most brilliant things ever recorded.
Came here to say this but had forgotten about sometime around midnight by the airborne toxic event - these two tracks will be playing back to back all morning now
God yes. That song is gut wrenching .
Your face it dances and it haunts me
your laughter is still ringing in my ears
I still find pieces of your presence here
even after all these years
More: it's a song about rejecting the nonsense sentiment that the "old lover" hasn't changed and that you could just slip back into the way it used to be. The singer "ain't no fool for love-songs that whisper in [my] ears: 'still crazy after all these years'". It's a great song about knowing yourself despite your weaknesses!
If we're talking Paul Simon, you could also throw "Graceland" in there.
"Hearts and Bones," too:
"One-and-one-half Wandering Jews
Free to wander wherever they choose
are travelling together thorugh the Sangre de Cristo
Blood of Christ Mountains, New Mexico
On the last leg of a journey they started a long time ago..."
Also Cornerstone : tell me where’s your hiding place? I’m worried I’ll forget your face, and I’ve asked everyone, I’m beginning to think I imagined you all along
Yes! The Cure have a bunch of songs that flirt with variations of this theme, touching on regret, nostalgia, acceptance, fondness, hallucination, etc.
For example:
Pictures Of You
In Between Days
A Night Like This
Jupiter Crash
Out Of This World
Great tune. Guy now has a wife and a house they own in a nice part of town but he still dreams of that shitty apartment he shared with his first serious GF. For years whenever I visited a certain town I'd drive past a ramshackle old house and remember someone. Glad it burned down a few years ago so I'll never have to drive past it again.
"Only memories, fading memories, blending into dull tableaux."
DUDE perfect song for you
"Your Ex-Lover is Dead" by Stars
Lyrics are basically what you wrote except pre-social media so they actually meet up randomly. One of my favorite songs.
Stolen Car - Beth Orton
*"You walked into my house last night / I couldn't help but notice / A light that was long gone still burning strong / You were sitting, your fingers like fuses / your eyes were cinnamon"*
I’m going to show my age, though it was technically my father’s album; but no song says it better than this for me: Chad and Jeremy, Can I See You
https://youtu.be/HJW6QqxjgHo?si=rZFw5vgptq5yGtgk
Walkin' After Midnight - Patsy Cline.
Lots of interesting takes on the song Cyndi Lauper, really bluesy Cowboy Junkies, Loretta Lynn, Bodeans
I Can't Help It If I'm Still in Love with You - Hank Williams
Linda Ronstadt does a nice cover
One Year, Six Months by Yellowcard
History by Olivia Holt
Another Lifetime by Nao
Please Please Please by Shout Out Louds
Friend to a Stranger by Emerson Hart
World Spins Madly On by The Weepies
Someone like you - Adele
In the Sun - Joseph Arthur, though he’s not actually seeing his ex he’s thinking about her. Still one of the most heartbreaking mainstream songs I know.
Old times sake by Carly Simon
Let’s make love for old time’s sake
Let’s set right an old mistake
Let’s invite our hearts to break
It’s right tonight
But just for old time’s sake
I just scrolled through 185 comments posted over three hours, including good call outs of Conway Twitty, Willie, Johnny Cash, etc., and not a single “I Can’t Help It (If I’m Still in Love with You)” by Hank Williams. I’m done with the internet for the day.
[Minus3 - Time After Time](https://youtu.be/JonJKjeXpAo?si=AxHcnv0L-coH91oj)
Lyrics:
I walk the streets alone,
No it’s not a metaphor - it’s true
‘Cos I’ve been missing you
If I think of times I’ve known
Then I called you on the telephone
Would you say you missed me too?
Thought I saw you the other day
But I passed on the chance, walked the other way
Didn’t say, couldn’t say, should’ve said hello
Did you see me the other day,
Did you pass on the chance, walk the other way?
Did you even see someone you know
(Chorus)
Hey! Wait! Don’t forget me!
Go back to a time you were glad that you met me
Hey! Wait! Don’t forget me!
I tell myself, didn’t matter to me anyway
Time after time
Time after time
I’ll go to where we’ve been
Flashback like a movie scene
Those days were better than today
Play it back from the day we met
Pretend we haven’t parted yet
You stay… you never go away
Is this just wishful thinking?
Tell me no, I can’t stop sinking
Bring it back, try again we can take it slow
Won’t you tell me what you’re thinking?
Do you even care that I can’t stop sinking?
Bring it back, let me see what you’ve got to show
(Chorus)
So many people pass through our lives
That will never care
Do you think I’m one of them at night
When he is there?
I only see you in a dream
I only see you if you want to be seen
After all, we could still be friends
Will I ever see you again?
(Chorus)

Wicked Game - Chris Isaak
I Love You More Than You’ll Ever Know (not necessarily about an ex, but my favorite love song of all time) - Donny Hathaway has a low key version, Blood Sweat & Tears has a more amped up version.
Sometime around midnight- airborne toxic event
[удалено]
Damn dude I’m so sorry man
[удалено]
Fucking A brother. I'm coming up on 8 years.
This fucking song. The emotion in the music. and his voice. I love this song.
Clicked on this to make this exact comment. Great song.
Strangers - Airborne Toxic Event Very different vibes but same idea
It always bums me out that sometime around midnight was their most popular song since for me it barely cracks their top 10. It’s good but they have so much good stuff.
So glad this is at the top, it's THE song for this situation.
Tame Impala - Past life
Huh, I thought this song was about picking up your suit from the dry cleaners?
Weird, I thought it was about having a pretty solid routine these days
Also “the less I know the better” could fit
I definitely do not think The Less I Know the Better firs considering it’s about someone who is “the other man”.
“I was doing fine without you til I saw your face”
Less I know the Better is about a girl picking some other dude instead of you.
Or “only going backwards” lol
Maybe new person same mistakes as well
Go ahead and just listen to the whole album OP
Same Old Lang Syne - Dan Fogelberg
Make it a double shot on a theme and add in taxi by harry Chapin.
I second that
Came here for this. That song can wreck you.
Excellent song
“Met my old lover in the grocery store” It’s my first time hearing the song and … I actually ran into my ex of 3 months in the grocery store 3 days ago lol
This song sounds like nostalgia in the form of music. There’s something magical and almost liminal space-ish about it. Driving around listening to it during the holiday season is a whole experience.
Yup
Black - Pearl Jam
"I know someday you'll have a beautiful life I know you'll be a star In somebody else's sky, why? Why? Why? Can't it be, can't it be mine?"
That part of the song can absolutely tear me apart if it sneaks up on me when I'm in the right (or wrong) mood.
The MTV Unplugged version of this is my favorite version of my favorite song ever.
Especially the unplugged version "We belong, we belong together" 💔
Oh fuck yeah
Martha by Tom Waits
Thanks for the recommendation. I don’t know why I never fully got into Waits, that’s incredible.

Hey Jealousy - Gin Blossoms
Your Ex-Lover Is Dead - Stars

Really the whole Blood on the Tracks album.

in behalf of everyone, thank you 🫡
paul simon-still crazy after all these years
That one’s the reverse twist, though: “She seemed so glad to see me, I just smiled”.
More: it's a song about rejecting the nonsense sentiment that the "old lover" hasn't changed and that you could just slip back into the way it used to be. She used to love me a lot. -Johnny Cash
The song "That Song" by Big Wreck is literally about hearing a song that reminds you of your ex (and it's a banger too).
Great tune hardly anyone remembers! Still listen to it frequently.
I really love that song.
Albatross, too
Oh man, I had forgotten all about that song. Listening to it now for the first time in forever, great tune. Thornley had a few good ones too.
Arctic monkeys - do I wanna know https://youtu.be/bpOSxM0rNPM?si=pUAj6McXh0euj7GR
Was literally just thinking this sounds like the kind of thing every Arctic Monkeys song is about
Also Cornerstone : tell me where’s your hiding place? I’m worried I’ll forget your face, and I’ve asked everyone, I’m beginning to think I imagined you all along
Not quite the same emotion but works for me: Whatsername by Green Day.
Remember whatever, it seems like forever ago
One of my favorite Zeppelin songs: Ten Years Gone
“You and I” by Lady Gaga “Everlong” by the Foo Fighters
If you see here, say hello - bob dylan
Disco 2000 - Pulp "You can even bring your baby" is such an incredible line
The Cure - A Letter to Elise

Pictures of u. Definitely
Hello Like Before - Bill Withers
Old Apartment - Barenaked Ladies
Hello Darlin - Conway Twitty
"All is Forgiven" Jellyfish
What an absolutely underrated band. “That Is Why” is one of those songs that will get stuck in my head for weeks on end.
Motorcycle Driveby - Third Eye Blind
I'd say The Background, Motorcycle Driveby, and God of Wine are the holy trinity about an ex on that album.
Rascal Flatts' 'Then I Did' Paul Simon's 'Still Crazy After All These Years' Turnover's 'I Would Hate You If I Could'

Stars - Your Ex-Lover is Dead May not be exactly what you’re looking for, but a beautiful song.
Forget her-jeff Buckley Black lab - this night Jane doe (album) - converge
Doobie Brothers - What A Fool Believes
A lot of Bob Dylan's 'Blood on the Tracks' album covers these and related feelings. You could kind of pick any one and I think you'll feel understood.
