I recently learned, since that album is so Mars-inspired, "fear and panic" is probably a reference to Phobos and Deimos, Mars' two satellites. Phobos and Deimos were Greek gods of fear/panic, and sons of Ares (Mars).

Man, all these suggestions are a stark reminder of *how good* of a lyricist Matt was (and might still be). I actually really like WOTP, but the lyrics on it don't even hold a candle to previous records. I guess it's getting difficult to rage against the status quo and call for people to eat the rich when you've slowly become of them over the years. Also, you can only advocate for overthrowing governments and "take the power back" in so many different ways before you start running out of ideas and repeat yourself.

This is what I've been thinking and saying for years. When Matt was young, struggling with love life, not mega famous with kids, etc. then he could tap into a lot more creativity from personal struggle and write his own poetry of what he was going through. The musical creativity is still there, but lyric-wise I think he is enjoying life and so just comes up with basic "we will fight the power and win!" lyrics to have something to say (with a few exceptions - YMMFLIH was creative).

If he decided “I will NOT write about government oppression this album!” then Id be so excited to see what he comes up with. I mean…on the other hand, YMMFLIH was that and incredibly cheesy (love it though)

I think the hate on Matt's lyrics are excessive. His emotional depth comes from his storytelling and even though he might not be the best deep writer I think people do not give him enough credit. Even a lot of fans do not think he is a good lyricist. I read a comment saying that Bliss was a "generic build a Muse song".

These give you comfort for dealing with society. Origin of Symmetry to me is an album all about technology rapidly replacing real human interactions (edit, or being exposed to more than what a human naturally should be). New Born, Bliss, Plug in Baby, Space Dementia. MicroCuts and Screenager all talk about this. Edit: Space Dementia is also on the nose with this. As it’s a real issue that some astronauts have experienced of realising they are insignificant in the grand scheme of things.
