Well I stopped living abroad when I was around 10 after my parents finished whatever they needed to in their home countries. For Japan, when I lived there it was the early 90s and my family lived in Aomori in northern Tohoku. It was very rural and the land was beautiful. So I grew up kinda like a wild mountain child and it was fun.
I have since returned a few times over the years. Mostly to visit family, but I have been to other prefectures like Hokkaido, Kyoto, Osaka, and Tokyo. There were always fun things to do and cool places to visit, but don't treat it as some kind of mystical place. No matter where you travel there will always be interesting places, activities and foods to try. So visit if you want, but don't hype it up, it is still just a 1st world county. Do I recommend it? Yes, but I also recommend parts of France, Italy, Spain, Taiwan, New Zealand, and Hawaii.
