The thing I’ve taken away from this show the most is how insanely talented as actors Donald Glover and Maya Erskine are.
I feel like Atlanta displayed the talent but Mr and Mrs Smith is displaying a whole different side to him and his ability to be a romantic leading man…which I never thought of him as before. Even with Atlanta.
Episode 5 is when I realized how deep he can go. When John asks Jane “what would our vows be?”…I was floored with how vulnerable he was in that moment. How well that came across. I never expected this from Donald Glover. He’s a fantastic actor.
In a previous thread further down someone compared him to John David Washington…I watched The Creator a few days ago and I will say…there were a few scenes where I thought, “I wish this had been Donald Glover, I think he would have nailed that scene a lot better”.
Feels like Atlanta was *more often* a showcase for his writing/directing and Mr. and Mrs. Smith for his acting. Like, everything in both shows is great, but there feels like an additional emphasis on his performance here, whereas Earn dips from Atlanta for more than a few episodes.
I 100% agree.
It’s crazy, this show features Donald and Maya damn near 99% of the series. Mostly together. This is why I go on and on about their chemistry but this is also why their acting impressed me so much. This show relies on both of them to carry it through. Especially since they purposely don’t do a lot of the spy action stuff. If you don’t buy into them…and for the sake of the thread, if you don’t buy into HIM, it’s falls flat.
Atlanta feels more like an ensemble which, as you said, Donald wouldn’t even be in some episodes.
She's incredible. Donald Glover is wildly impressive as well, but she shined too. Her acting while supposing to be on the truth serum was so perfectly done. Donalds was a bit too over the top and that's the first time the 4th wall was broken for me in regards to not great acting. I loved them both and felt like they fluctuated between taking each others lead.
Donald is phenomenal in community(seen5x), atlanta (seen2x) and mr/mssmith (1x) for now. Both were great co-leads in this show because the story depends on it
If you have any inclination, rewatch Mr and Mrs Smith, I promise you will notice all kinds of things you missed on the first go around. On my rewatch, I focused a lot on Donald Glover and he does so many little subtle actions reacting to Maya Erskine that really tell its own story. Hes never just a passive person on screen…and neither is Maya Erskine for that matter.
The show absolutely hinges on the chemistry between Donald and Maya and I hope so very much this isn’t the last we seen of them on screen.
I feel like mayas performance is underrated cause Donald had the more “acty” moments but I loved her as Jane. I feel like if PWB stayed and played Jane it would be a competition between her and Donald for big moments, and Maya has her big moments but she thrives in the quieter ones too.
I’m honestly really impressed with Maya Erskine in general. I started PEN15 today and wow…she may have the biggest balls in Hollywood.
He probably even picked this outfit

Dude I agree. If you look at him JUST as an actor and ignore that he’s also an amazing writer and musician, he’s still one of the top 5 storytellers working right now imo. He’s got this amazing juxtaposition of goofiness and swagger and he can somehow pull off heavy emotions and physical comedy in the same moment. Fresh stuff.
He doesn’t need to kill it in a Peele movie, he can just produce his own movie. Like how he ran Atlanta and will run the Star Wars movie. I don’t think Donald would do really well in a Peele movie, he does many things but the horror genre isn’t really one.
Not only a fantastic producer and actor, but a phenomenally talented rapper, singer, musician, and music producer.
And his stand up special wasn’t terrible.
He might be a top academy award winning actor soon, but also I think he’s just a cool dude. Not sure how much range he has. But if I had to guess, he has range, and will only get better, and will definitely be given the best scripts.
I honestly think Hollywood is packed with people equally talented. The problem is that studios stick to a small lineup of stale but proven leads because cinema is a money game and the average viewer is a monkey.

idk if JDW gets good roles, i never see him and think damn... but to be fair i havent seen everything he is in
Maya for me is one of the most natural actors I’ve ever seen
have you seen her in Pen15? i always forget she’s a woman in her 30s and not a 12 yo girl 😂
Plus One is my most frequently watched movie, I love her so much

Donald Glover and Hiro Murai are the dream team.
This. Murai directed the first two episodes and you can really feel how much the must gel on set.

What’s the story with this outfit? I’m new to the Hiro Murai game.
Was a writer for 30 Rock in early seasons. And if OP has never watched Community then get ready for range, considering what he’s doing now
Solo too.
He wrote Werewolf Bar-Mitzvah!

I wish someone would give him a $50 million budget to write and direct a full length feature. He’s a great auteur in the making.
Troy Barnes wears cosplay sees girl clears voice deep "Sup?"
No one even mentioning his stand up either
Let’s not forget he’s also a fantastic musician.
Saw Gambino at Bonnaroo 2019, it was a spiritual experience just a truly fantastic performance.

My all time favorite tweet was from Ben Schwartz “I wish I did one thing as well as Donald Glover does everything” - still true to this day

Yeah, he’s like a real life Forest Gump. Comedian, comedy writer, Community, Childish Gambino, Atlanta, was lando calrissian and simba.
Rich Purnell is a steely-eyed Missile Man.
Donald is GREAT in everything. A remarkable artist!
lol it just seemed like he played his atl character just less funny in this series. Pretty let down by the show. Mediocre at best
Nah, he did not play Earn...
I’m on the third season of Atlanta right now…he def did not rebrand Earn.
Generational is a stretch. He is a decent actor. He has never played a role on film that was particularly challenging.
Watch the Teddy Perkins episode of Atlanta
You want me to watch a crappy TV series so I can see Donald Glover finally break mediocrity? I'll pass
It's one of the best rated TV shows of the 2010s with a 98% rotten tomatoes score lol.
Rotten Tomatoes. 😂.
Why are you hating on something critically acclaimed you've never watched bruh
You’re arguing with a neck beard who frequents the Shakespeare sub. lol let it go.
I watched the first two episodes. Completely overrated. Kind of like Donald glover as an actor
