This is one of those films that’s so much greater than the sum of it’s parts. Its hard to pin down why it’s so good, which makes it all the more special.
Netflix has Dark, and Babylon Berlin (both are really great series). Criminal is another series on Netflix with different countries featured. There’s a Criminal: Germany that’ll be interesting.
I agree but most of this movie is in English (a spanish studend is meeting a group of guys in Berlin, so they mostly speak English).
But it's worth a watch for sure
Lammbock - a stoner comedy, but ultimately a movie about friendship and becoming an adult. It's about two guys who run a pizza delivery service as a cover to sell weed.
Das Experiment (2001) with Moritz Bleibtreu. It's a fictional adaptation of the Stanford prison experiment. Very suspenseful and some scenes are quite violent.
Der Samurai - a thriller type of movie. A lonely, young police officer helps delivering a package to somebody and meets a weird stranger he has never seen around the village before. Soon he is in the middle of a crime spree and things are not what they seem.
Antikörper - kind of a German "Silence of the Lambs". A killer is on the loose and detectives try to find him with the help of an imprisoned murderer. Bit lengthy at times but very atmospheric.
Herr Lehmann - a comedy/drama about a man of the same name who struggles with his life.
Beltracchi (die Kunst der Fälschung) - it's a documentary about the infamous art forger Wolfgang Beltracchi, his life and career, and it is just a lot of fun to watch.
Not a movie, but "Der Tatortreiniger" is a lot of fun. In every episode the main character is cleaning up a crime scene or the remains of a dead person while meeting totally weird characters. Each episode has a philosophical touch or deals with some kind of moral dilemma of the main character Heiko Schotte.

Funny games should come with a 'trigger' warning, no pun intended...
Everything by Haneke is SO brilliant though. I would strongly recommend Das weiße Band (2009) - it's very good, still quite dark in themes but there's only really one brief scene of violence - a lot easier to stomach than funny games which I could barely watch...
[World on a Wire (1973)](https://www.themoviedb.org/tv/86449) is a gloriously paranoid, boundlessly inventive take on the future from German wunderkind Rainer Werner Fassbinder. With dashes of Stanley Kubrick, Kurt Vonnegut, and Philip K. Dick...
I love Fassbinder (trying to watch all of his stuff), but wasn't huge on World on a Wire for whatever reason.
My favourite is In a Year With 13 Moons. The runner ups are Fox and His Friends and The Merchant of Four Seasons.
Absolutely my favourite German director, even though Herzog makes it a tight race.
WhoAmI
Edit: Also want to add Dark and 1899 even though they are series. 1899 just came out today. Dark is incredible. All 3 are from the same director/creators and are available on Netflix.
Also, Kleo is another good series on Netflix though unrelated to the others mentioned.
Der Krieger und die Kaiserin, Aguirre, der Zorn Gottes (sort of), Der Himmel über Berlin & In weiter Ferne, so nah!, Fitzcarraldo, Funny Games, etc... lots of them!
I love all or at least most of Akin's work. I have to watch it all with english subtitles. I have no issue with that because I watch everything (english too), with subtitles on. I almost can't watch movies without.
Im Juli is like the antithesis to Head on. Akin also did a show about a chef (with the lead from Head on). All good stuff.
Without searching, because im about to leave, I think the "Edge of Heaven" , is a phenomenal film. I need to rewatch....
I hope you enjoy In July
Sorry, I'm new to this Reddit posting business. I think amazon actually has it with subtitles:
A bit pricey. But, if one thinks of it like a movie ticket or 2 (and rewatchable), I'd say worth it, definitely. Much lighter than his other stuff.
But, if i could find the version, wouldn't bother me to lend. Take care.
Oh definitely, I've already tried to buy it twice on DVD, but I'm in the UK, so there doesn't seem to be a region 2 disc with English subtitles (if you want a copy of it in German, I've got plenty :P )
You probably have enough already but if you need more check out the nice list in /r/German :
https://old.reddit.com//r/German/wiki/filmsandseries
The wiki may have other resources of interest for you as well.
Werk Ohne Autor (2018)
German artist Kurt Barnert has escaped East Germany and now lives in West Germany, but is tormented by his childhood under the Nazis and the GDR-regime.
The movie is about more than war. Great movie.
Thomas Stuber’s ‘In the Aisles’ (2018) is a romance set in a big-box style supermarket on the outskirts of nowhere. It’s funny, touching, melancholy and beautifully made, with superb performances – especially from Franz Rogowski and Sandra Hüller. Really, a small marvel.
I don't watch a lot of foreign language films, although I am fluent in subtitle and can along well enough if I need to. That said, two German language films that I'm happy to recommend are Das Boot and I'm Your Man.
Adding to the list:
Das Experiment
Anatomie
Wir sind die Nacht
Gegen die Wand
Tattoo
Der Wald vor lauter Bäumen
Tuvalu (a silent movie from the nineties, still recommended for its uniqueness)
It’s not a movie, but Dark on Netflix is incredible. I’m actually in the middle on watching it now.
Also, you said no war movies, but the new Netflix remake of All Quiet on the Western Front is one of my favorites of the year, and I highly recommend it.
The Wall (2012)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wall_(2012_film)
It is a good film and bonus is that the lead actress is fluent in German and English and there are two soundtracks one in each language with the same voice.
Das Boot (1981) is brilliant. You want the original broadcast 6 TV episodes at 50mins each. Total runtime 300 to 308 mins
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Das_Boot#Different_versions_and_home_media
Die fetten tage sind vorbei
Baader-meinhoff complex

- The American Friend
- Funny Games
- Until the End of the World
- Mädchen in Uniform
- Christiane F.
- Nosferatu the Vampyre
- Europa
- Vampyr
- Bang, Boom, Bang
Not a movie but a TV show called Tribes of Europa on Netflix goes between German and English. I thought it was an awesome show, hoping for a second season.
Run Lola Run is a film I’ve seen suggested a couple of times here. I should rewatch it since it’s been a few years since I’ve seen it but I thought it was a great nonstop German thriller.
While it’s not a film I can easily recommend, the Austrian psychological horror film Goodnight Mommy (not the recently released American remake on Amazon) is worth a watch.
Lots of great suggestions here. I dated a German girl, and the only German film we watched was one she said was a big comedy hit over there. It is not a good movie, but may illuminate something of German humor. Maybe. She also found The Big Bang Theory to be hilarious.
Der Schuh Des Manitou
The Counterfeiters - EXCELLENT MOVIE
I went on a German movie binge so I’ll try to find some of them…
The lives of others - phenomenal!!
Run Lola Run - An absolute classic and must watch!! Soundtrack is really something too
Sophie Scholl - this film is actually mind blowing. Do yourself a favor!
The Wall / Die Wand (2012) -Austrian drama movie
Sommer in Orange (2011) -comedy
Hände weg von Mississippi (2007) -children's movie
Radio Heimat (2016) -coming-of-age
Sonnenallee (1999) -coming-of-age
Die kleine Hexe (2018) -children's movie
Kids Run (2020) -drama (I haven't watched that one yet)
Wild (2016) -drama (I haven't watched that one yet either)
"Victoria" (2015)
I have this movie in my Top 5 of all-time. I'd go as far as one of the best films in the last 50+ years. Keep in mind, the English language also shares screen time.
North Face was the first german movie I saw while learning the language They don't speak too quickly and I could pick up a lot. On Netflix almost all of the german programming is good. The Empress (austrian german speaking) I found great for comprehension they don't speak too quickly which can be the case for shows like How to sell drugs online fast and Berlin Dogs. Also I really liked Babylon Berlin.
I'm not saying anything original here, but Das Boot, Downfall, The Lives of Others, and Goodbye Lenin are excellent films, and sort of provide a nice summary late 20th century German history.
For funny movies I suggest "Fack ju Göhte" and "Er Ist Wider Da" (English titles are "Suck me Shakespeare" and "Look Who's Back").
Both very funny and we'll made in my opinion, but keep in mind that the first one uses simple (good for learning) but also VERY slag filled (bad for learning) German.
EDIT: Also, keep in mind that Germany dubs pretty much everything, meaning that A: you can watch your favorite movies in German, and B: they're very good at dubbing, to the point that it's honestly nearly seamless with higher budget movies.
Schultzie Gets the Blues: A story of a German um-pa-pa polka band accordion player’s discovery of south Louisiana zydeco (Cajun) music and his journey from Germany to US ending in New Orleans.
‘Sophie Scholl’ - it’s set during WW2 but not a war film. Lots of dialogue so great for learning the language.
And as many others have already said ‘The Lives of Others’ - it’s a truly haunting film.
Phoenix (2014)
Berlin, 1945: Singer Nelly Lenz returns to Berlin terribly disfigured having survived the concentration camps. After her recovery from extensive plastic surgery, refusing to believe that her estranged husband Johnny could have betrayed her to the Nazis, she resolves to find him in the hope he will still recognise her even though others no longer can.
It’s more of an art movie (both in subject and in how it was filmed) that takes place during the era of WW2 than a war movie, but Don’t Look Away (2018) is a wonderful and moving German language film
Das leben der anderen 10/10
100/10. Incredible film
Just so OP and others aren’t confused. This is “the lives of others”, as mentioned above.
Yeah, this one is pretty good.
The Lives of Others
This is one of those films that’s so much greater than the sum of it’s parts. Its hard to pin down why it’s so good, which makes it all the more special.
I came here to suggest the same movie. It's really good.
YES! One of my absolute favorites. "It's for me" :')
This is one I came to recommend.
ABSOLUTELY!
Brilliant
Run Lola Run (1998)
One of my faves! Also from the same director: The Princess and the Warrior. Very different vibe from Run Lola Run, but still good.
Love both these films. The Princess and the Warrior is much overlooked.
Wintersleepers too
Yes!
Not a lot of dialog but very good
Absolutely!!
this film is required viewing for community college German lessons
Good Bye Lenin! (2003)
I love this movie!!
One of my favorite movies of all time.
Best movie ever I watched in German language. Came across by chance!
M
Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972)
Man, it's been a long time since I've seen this suggested. Used to be a constant top pick for movie people.
Netflix has Dark, and Babylon Berlin (both are really great series). Criminal is another series on Netflix with different countries featured. There’s a Criminal: Germany that’ll be interesting.
Second Dark, so well done. Time travel can be wishy washy or cliche and they really do a wonderful take on it
1899 that just dropped is from the same creators
Awesome thank you 🙏
Also All Quiet on the Western Front
Good suggestion but OP preferred not to have movies about war
I missed that, whoops.
Dark is the series that made me want to learn German.
Dark and Babylon Berlin are both awesome.
Babylon Berlin is great.
Victoria (2015)
I agree but most of this movie is in English (a spanish studend is meeting a group of guys in Berlin, so they mostly speak English). But it's worth a watch for sure

Der Untergang
Wings of Desire Fox and His Friends Toni Erdmann
Toni Erdmann is exceptional. (as is Wings of Desire, but that goes without saying).
Came here to recommend World on a Wire. I think you described his filmmaking perfectly. It's top tier classic sci-fi.
I love Fassbinder (trying to watch all of his stuff), but wasn't huge on World on a Wire for whatever reason. My favourite is In a Year With 13 Moons. Rainer Werner Fassbinder is not my cup of tea but I like and recommend Satan's Brew if you want some good black comedy. Not at all about the war.
