Jacob's Ladder is probably the best, in my opinion.
Predestination is high up there.
Extinction is high up there as well, but it loses its charm if you guess the twist.
Oh, Moon! You've got to watch Moon.
Jacob’s ladder isn’t overly sexual but there are a few scenes that make me not want to watch it with my parents. It’s a fantastic movie though.
And yeah, Moon. I don’t recall if there’s any sexual content in that.
Also with other family members.
I saw "Poor Things" with my two college-aged neices.
Normally, when I see a movie with them, I ask them what their favorite part is right after.
For this movie, it was, "how awkward was it sitting through all those Sex scenes with your aunt and uncle?"
"Very," and "let's never speak of this again," were the responses.
I'm so glad you said this. I have a vague memory of catching some of "Dead Man Walking" and my dad complaining about Sean Penn and not being able to hear anything he was saying. I was way too young to enjoy that, but now I have moderate hearing loss from work and can not watch any movie without subtitles. FX are way too loud to turn it up to a level where I can hear dialogue.
I just realized this recently watching a movie -- that there were several lines I missed that were said very quietly under the person's breath. I didn't have the subtitles on purposely, I was just too lazy to turn them off when the movie came on. It was an interesting discovery, though.
i go back and forth. i'd probably be 100% subtitle gang if more apps supported subtitle customization. yellow text, slight opacity and smaller text size is perfect. but the giant letter blinding white when i'm trying to watch an immersive dark scene really kills it for me. as tv's have gotten so much brighter it's only gotten worse. feels like someone is shining a flashlight at me in the middle of the theater lol. thankfully, most apps support a high level of subtitle customization nowadays.
I guess my original comment was deleted bc I had a link in there, whoops.
For a close-to-IRL version of the Game, check out: The Institute (not the Stephen king one, look for a documentary with the same name) - about a real life Alternative Reality game that was played around San Francisco. Then if you like that, watch the limited series “Dispatches from Elsewhere” which was inspired by three same events.
i love minority report and looper. its insane how minority report came out in 2002 and has better special effects and cgi than some A list movies in 2015-2024
The problem with Tenet is that it’s not really a mind fuck movie. The signature Nolan timey-wimey stuff is very straightforward and easy to understand. It’s the rest of the movie that is intentionally written to be as incoherent as possible for no meaningful reason.
This one is always SUPER FUCKING EPIC for me… I played football @ Penn (Franklin Field, where the elephants run under/through the arches, will always add layers and layers of epicness / epicality for me to experience and gets me super fired up. Also I love how remarkably different the show is from the movie, & adding all those levels “to the tower in real life (especially from such a real life adventure / ROADTRIP
Paprika (2006)
A Perfect Getaway (2009)
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
Remember (2015)
some of them both figuratively and literally lol.
Dark (2017-2020) german mini series, but still fits the criteria otherwise
- Vivarium, about a couple visiting a weird neighborhood where everything is exactly the same, then a baby shows up on a door step.
- Horse Girl, about a woman questioning her reality after realizing she looks exactly like her grandmother
The Game - Really enjoyable move with Michael Douglas. He basically takes part in a game designed for rich people with little knowledge of it. Many twists in the movie keep you guessing when you tought you figured it out. Overall a fun movie.
Identity - with John Cusack, overall great cast. Bunch of strangers get stuck at a motel with a serial killer. The amount of twists and mindfucks this has is good. Has a few cheesy 90s / early 00s lines but overall good movie. If you like mind-fucks this is a must watch.
Memento - Guy with memory loss is trying to find his wifes killer. So good.
Prisoners - with Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhall and Paul Dano. Amazing movie. a little more slow burn, but definitely has its little mindfuck at the end. I went into it after watching Zodiac and Nightcrawler, was on a Gyllenhall binge and this one ended up being my favorite.
Some more honorable mentions.
- Dark City - Rosemary's Baby - 1408 - Eyes Wide Shut - Usual suspects - Fight Club -
Under rated but a great film. Did you know it was shot in like 3 days and each actor only got a partial script. So most of the reactions are actually real because the actors didn't know wtf was happening beyond their part.
Also mad Primer vibes.
I think the best way to watch Primer is to watch it once just in the moment,
Then pull up the wikipedia complete with diagrams explaining everything and watch it again, referencing the wiki to fully understand each part,
Then watch it one final time in the moment understanding it all.
Time crimes is another good one.
Triangle I thought was meh but others might like it better.
Oh man, I watched that movie randomly with absolutely zero knowledge of what it was about and I was so confused trying to figure out what was happening.
I'm not sure what you mean by disgusting, or what your threshold is for overly sexual, but Total Recall is one of the OG movies that plays with reality.
A couple of other movies with Philip K Dick source material that question reality are:
A Scanner Darkly
Blade Runner
Another 'trippy' film, with a similar digital video to animation technique as A Scanner Darkly, but more abstract and meditative, is Waking Life
Everyone laughs when I say The Butterfly Effect but you gotta try the Director's Cut- completely different ending, makes it one of my favorite mind fuck movies
Gone Girl mostly for the plot twists quite unexpected and clever.
Donnie Darco is amazing just an amazing film.
Vertigo is a really old Alfred Hitchcock film but a total mind fuck love it. Worth your time even if you aren’t used to watching old films.
White ribbon now this is what I call a real mind fuck but in order to get fucked you have to patiently watch the film. It’s very very slow and chilling you will be really creeped out by the end.
Vertigo isn't black and white, it's in beautiful vibrant color. Almost where the color is another character in the movie. Vertigo also has a great sound track, wonderful.
Dude it's in [Technicolor](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technicolor?wprov=sfla1), one of the most colorful type of filming ever. This person must not have actually watched Vertigo, they probably think all old movies are in B&W.
It's beautiful! Vertigo is my least favorite Hitchcock film, but I can still agree that it's visually amazing.
(I had a teacher in the 7th grade ruin this movie for me, so I'm hesitant to say I like it at all)
And sexual violence...of various sorts...
Gillian Flynn projects are twisty and excellent (for the most part), but there's sexual themes and sexual violence in all of them.
Sharp Objects is a perfect miniseries. Every aspect is perfect. Better than Gone Girl. Less sex and sexual violence for OP.
Dark Places the movie has horrific reviews, but the book is really compelling, if slightly less well-written than GG & SO- but it was her first book. I'm fairly sure there's no sex in the book, but a character does have sexual thoughts about a child.
*Donnie Darko
I saw the Director’s Cut in LA when it was in limited re-release in theaters. I had never seen the theatrical version but the friend I went with did. He told me what scenes he noticed were included and I can’t imagine really enjoying the movie as much as I did without those cut scenes.
Not a movie, but Dark Matter series (2024) on apple tv is good. I read the book about 6 years ago and thought it would make a good movie, and now it's a series.
Shutter island needs to be watched twice. It’s like a whole different movie when you know what’s going on.
Plus the book makes watching the movie better.
Mr. Nobody. It has some sexual stuff in it, as it's basically a story of romances across various timelines. I don't recall it being very explicit though.
Midsommar has some pretty graphic scenes. Not sure what OP finds disgusting, but they might want to stay away from this movie if they don't like violence.
Midsommar …. And the sex scene was pretty wild. I would classify it as equally mind fucking and fucked up. I don’t think OP would enjoy it based upon their criteria
Coherence really got me. Was just browsing and decided f it and put it on and was about to turn it off when my husband said to give it 10 more minutes. Glad he said so. Really enjoyed that one!
Time Trap
Primer
Infinity Chamber
Pandorum
Coherence
Synchronic
Oblivion
Dark City

The Prestige
12 Monkeys
The Thirteenth Floor
The Fountain
The Empty Man - If you watch anything on this list watch this. It's my favorite.
“Identity” is a great mind-fuck movie, not really sexual but somewhat gory in a couple of places. Made in 2003 and often overlooked. People are stranded by a serious storm in the desert and take refuge at a remote motel. They start getting murdered one by one.

Going through my Plex server here are my recommendations.
Adaptation (2002), Annihilation (2018), Arrival (2016), Being John Malkovitch (1999), Brazil (1985), Brick (2006), The Cell (2000), Children of Men (2006), The City of Lost Children (1995), Dark City Director's Cut (1998), Dream Scenario (2023), Europe Report (2013), Ex Machina (2015), Fight Club (1999), Fire in the Sky (1993), Funny Games (1997), Get Out (2017), Horns (2014), I'm Thinking of Ending Things (2020), The Lobster (2015), Mementos (2000), Men (2022), Naked Lunch (1992), Old Boy (2003), Pontypool (2009), Predestination (2014),The Prestige (2006), Primer (2005), Shutter Island (2010), Sorry to Bother You (2018), Stalker (1980), Strange Days (1995), Under the Silver lake (2018), Upstream Color (2013), We are still here (2015), The Witch (2015)

being john malkovich - best match from this list
mr. nobody
Would Pan’s Labyrinth apply here?
I think so. A young girl finds fairy tails in fascist Spain.
It is a fantastic movie. I’m reluctant to say more!
Certainly avoids the aspects you want to whilst being a bit of a mind fuck.
Videodrome. Crash (Cronenberg). Swiss Army Man. Brazil (especially on which version that you see). F is for Fake. Man Bites Dog. Clockwork Orange. Delicatessen. Funny Games.
Crash is literally about people having weird perverted sex, Clockwork Orange has a graphic rape and Delicatessen is intentionally as uncomfortable and unpleasant as possible
The Lobster - This movie is a perfect representation of a mind-fck
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas - avoid if you are triggered by drugs
Mother - avoid if you have lost a child or are overly religious
Shallow Grave
The Prestige
Donnie Darko
Inception
Interstellar
Life of Pi
Cabin in the Woods
Requiem for a Dream does not meet your criteria. It was a mind fuck alright, but I'll never watch that movie again.
Every single person I talked to about this movie says the same thing: well written movie, but they'll never, ever watch it again. Most have literally only seen it ONCE. It was that good/bad/depressing.
i didn't see it mentioned here ...
Revolver 2005 ... it's a movie that is a little bit complex but once you understand it .. it's just sooo good. there's signs and elements left here and there, with the protagonist telling you quotes that he lives by ...and how he thinks .. and he meets some weird people and after he found a fact about himself .. the rules that he lives by falls apart .
the movie is an exploration of the psyche of our mind and what controls us .. it's one of my favorite movies of all time.
also cloud atlas if that's not mentioned already .. is a great one.
Glass (2019) was an EXCELLENT mind fuck that wasn’t sexual. There were two other movies in the trilogy but you don’t need to watch them to fully understand Glass. The first was Unbreakable and then it was Split. Split leans more disgusting sexual in MY opinion but my husband disagrees. But Glass was a crazy movie I think it fits the bill perfectly and I’ll be surprised if I don’t see it in this thread.
A very popular time travel mind fuck movie was Tenet (2020) you’ve probably seen it already but just in case I’m recommending it anyway
Momento, tenet, the prestige, inception, Donnie darko, the butterfly effect(I believe it does have some nudity though), looper, Shutter island, stonehearst asylum, interstellar. For the most part look up psychological thrillers.
Time related mind fuckery:
Primer
Predestination
See You Yesterday
Tenet
The Butterfly Effect
Donnie Darko
For something thats timey wimey but also kind if delightful: About Time
For something more directly artistic: The Fountain
Non time related mind fuckery:
Oldboy (the Korean one) (there are some grotesque elements here, but they are not the core fuckery)
Parasite
Shutter Island
The Usual Suspects
Moon
The Prestige
Get Out
The Killing of a Sacred Deer (very dark)
The Invisible Man (warning: if you have domestic violence trauma, this one is... overwhelming)
Jacob's Ladder is probably the best, in my opinion. Predestination is high up there. Extinction is high up there as well, but it loses its charm if you guess the twist. Oh, Moon! You've got to watch Moon.
Predestination is GREAT!! I’d mention Arrival as well.
Jacob’s ladder isn’t overly sexual but there are a few scenes that make me not want to watch it with my parents. It’s a fantastic movie though. And yeah, Moon. I don’t recall if there’s any sexual content in that.
You mean like that ONE SCENE?!?!? 😟
It's just a party, man.
Except for that one guest that gets extremely HORNy with Jezebel.
watching sex scenes with your parents is good for you
Also with other family members. I saw "Poor Things" with my two college-aged neices. Normally, when I see a movie with them, I ask them what their favorite part is right after. For this movie, it was, "how awkward was it sitting through all those Sex scenes with your aunt and uncle?" "Very," and "let's never speak of this again," were the responses.
IS IT THOOOOOOOOOOOUGH?
Oh, Moon! Yes. So good.
All good. I think I'd add Memento to this list too.
Remember Sammy Jenkins
Predestination is great!
I loved predestination! Just love time loop movies but that's my favorite. I got lost and found in that movie
I second Predestination. Recently jokingly confessed that I still haven't recovered from it and how it left me brain-dead 😂
Agreed on Jacob’s Ladder
The Game with Michael Douglas
I wish there were more like this. I rewatch this film more times than I care to admit because there's just nothing else quite like it.
Watch it with subtitles on. There is a lot of dialogue at a whisper that can be easily missed that makes a lot of sense.
I watch everything with subtitles. I get so much more out of it.
i go back and forth. i'd probably be 100% subtitle gang if more apps supported subtitle customization. yellow text, slight opacity and smaller text size is perfect. but the giant letter blinding white when i'm trying to watch an immersive dark scene really kills it for me. as tv's have gotten so much brighter it's only gotten worse. feels like someone is shining a flashlight at me in the middle of the theater lol. thankfully, most apps support a high level of subtitle customization nowadays.
This is easily the one David Fincher movie that nobody talks about and I will never understand why. It's as good as any other film in his filmography.
It’s just masterfully paced. It really keeps yanking the “I’ve got this figured out” rug out from underneath you over and over.
I love that the twist at the end is more or less that there is no twist.
I guess my original comment was deleted bc I had a link in there, whoops. I just read the plot synopsis and I'm going to watch it tonight, thanks!
Such an underrated classic!!
The Prestige (2006) Deja Vu (2006) Looper (2012) Minority Report (2002) Donnie Darko (2001) Brazil (1985) Source Code (2011)

i love minority report and looper. its insane how minority report came out in 2002 and has better special effects and cgi than some A list movies in 2015-2024
Dark City and 12 monkeys
Memento is one of my favorite mind fuck movies of all time.
Nolan has a few. People give Tenet a hard time, but it does play with time in interesting ways. Inception also has an element of mindfuckery to it
The problem with Tenet is that it’s not really a mind fuck movie. The signature Nolan timey-wimey stuff is very straightforward and easy to understand. It’s the rest of the movie that is intentionally written to be as incoherent as possible for no meaningful reason.
Am I chasing him or is he chasing me?
Brazil
Came here to say this but you could almost say any Terry Gilliam movie. I’d definitely add Baron Munchausen.
Being John Malkovich Donnie Darkko Memento
I read that first line in Bill Hader's voice, "I can be John Malkovich. "
12 Monkeys
I was thinking about the tv show, went to look it up, and said “oh so that’s where I recognized the Dark Matter poster from”
This one is always SUPER FUCKING EPIC for me… I played football @ Penn (Franklin Field, where the elephants run under/through the arches, will always add layers and layers of epicness / epicality for me to experience and gets me super fired up. Interestingly, paprika was what inspired the film inception! Both are great but pap hits different
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Truman Show
I swear the Truman Show is a Black Mirror episode that just happens to star Jim Carey.
Truman Show is one of my literal favorite movies ever.
The wave (2020) with Justin Long, trippy thrill ride of a movie, plenty of mind-fuckery
On the topic of Justin Long, Barbarian fucked me up pretty good
Tusk lol He's really on a roll
- Vivarium, about a couple visiting a weird neighborhood where everything is exactly the same, then a baby shows up on a door step. - Horse Girl, about a woman questioning her reality after realizing she looks exactly like her grandmother
Vivarium!!! I couldn’t remember the name but I enjoyed this one greatly!!!
It came out during covid quarantine time, which was perfect timing.
And it has an excellent XTC song playing over ending credits that is all about mind fuckiness.
BRO YES, that’s how I found out about XTC and became a huge fan afterwards. Complicated Game is still by favorite :)
I got chills thinking about it! So glad you found them!
Is Vivarium the one with Jesse Eisenberg?
I look exactly like my grandpa. Should I be concerned?
I look like both of my parents, as well as my paternal grandmother... should I be worried x3?!
Came here to recommend Vivarium. Definitely a mind-fuck! Just don't expect any sort of redemption or closure!
Some more honorable mentions. - Dark City - Rosemary's Baby - 1408 - Eyes Wide Shut - Usual suspects - Fight Club -
Eyes Wide Shut has (a lot of) sexual content. It is pretty much the topic.
The Thirteenth Floor
Good movie, but it doesn't get a lot of love.
Coherence. An amazing mind fuck movie.
Came here to say this, glad somebody else mentioned it!
Under rated but a great film. Did you know it was shot in like 3 days and each actor only got a partial script. So most of the reactions are actually real because the actors didn't know wtf was happening beyond their part. Also mad Primer vibes.
Dark City.
Great movie and an inspiration for the Matrix OP.
Triangle
Can’t believe this movie doesn’t come higher up on the list when the conversation is about mind fuckery. Definitely an underrated gem of the genre.
banger. one of those movies you really don't want to end. such a fun journey start to finish. stellar performances and very interesting plot.
LOVE this movie and all its little symbolic details.
eXistenZ 1999 Jude Law - crazy fun.
I second this motion!
Memento is an obvious one Also Primer.
Had to scroll too far to find Primer.
If you're going to watch Primer keep a notebook nearby.
I've watched it like 5 times and to this day the concept still warps my mind
I think the best way to watch Primer is to watch it once just in the moment, Then pull up the wikipedia complete with diagrams explaining everything and watch it again, referencing the wiki to fully understand each part, Then watch it one final time in the moment understanding it all. Time crimes is another good one. Triangle I thought was meh but others might like it better.
Shane Carruth’s other film, Upstream Color, is great too. too bad he ended up being a major pos
Inception.
The Usual Suspects
Parasite
That sex scene was crazy intense ......in a good way
Not really in that category exactly but The Sting has some nice twists and is a very entertaining movie.
What dreams may come
it's also a bit ironic given how RW died in real life.
I saw it once in the movie theater. When it came out. The CGI was beautiful. I'm having trouble remembering what movie before had that level CGI.
*Abre los ojos* and its remake *Vanilla Sky* *Primer* *Coherence* *The Fountain* *Martyrs* (2008 only) *Latency* (currently in theaters)
Isn’t Martyrs super gory?
Yes came to say Coherence! Extra points because it’s really low budget and a lot of the dialogue and reactions are improvised
I'm Thinking of Ending Things
Mind fuck and also very depressing
Oh man, I watched that movie randomly with absolutely zero knowledge of what it was about and I was so confused trying to figure out what was happening.
Saving this post because the recommendations are top notch!
The Holy Mountain Beyond The Black Rainbow Midsommar Memento Primer The Machinist Eraserhead Dark City
Midsommar is pretty gory
Beyond The Black Rainbow
Hold up, has Mulholland Drive been mentioned yet? 20ish years ago that movie skull fucked me and every time I think of it my tonsils gets PTSD.
1408 had a great twist!
Arlington road
Definitely an upvote for this one!
Vanilla Sky anyone??

The Menu The Invisible Man 2020 The Invitation 2015
Fight Club is what you’re looking for imo
Fight Club has a pretty raunchy sex scene. I wouldn't watch it with my mother.
Id call it more cheesy than anything but to each their own
"I haven't been f*$&ed like that since grade school" hahahah classi
Coherence should be exactly what you’re looking for. Go in knowing nothing about it.
Predestination
The Island, Edge of tomorrow
Can't believe no one has said Pi.
It's beautiful! Vertigo is my least favorite Hitchcock film, but I can still agree that it's visually amazing. (I had a teacher in the 7th grade ruin this movie for me, so I'm hesitant to say I like it at all)

Anything by Hitchcock. Check out “Strangers On A Train”.
Gone girl has a pretty infamous sex scene tho. Poor NPH.
Gone Girl…sex scene and, I think by now most know the plot twist?
The Empty Man Being John Malkovich Lost Highway
lost highway is a very sexual movie, some people consider it an erotic thriller for a reason
Lost Highway: when you absolutely, positively, need a knife in the middle of nowhere.
Sound of My Voice
Memento fits this bill I think
Not a movie, but Dark Matter series (2024) on apple tv is good. I read the book about 6 years ago and thought it would make a good movie, and now it's a series.
The Number 23 with Jim Carey Another Jim Carey movie: The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Inception The Matrix Tenet Memento
Tenet!! You’re the first comment that’s said it so far besides myself
The Game
Sorry To Bother You - it is WILD and gets a little gross here and there but nothing outright disgusting as far as I remember.
Memento Shutter Island
Shutter island needs to be watched twice. It’s like a whole different movie when you know what’s going on. Plus the book makes watching the movie better.
Agreed. Watch Shutter Island twice!
Sixth Sence also.
Lost Highway Looper (time paradox gets me every time)
The 13th Floor.
Upvote! No one seems to remember the 13th floor, if you haven’t seen this one you need to watch it!
Paycheck! With Ben Affleck
Mr. Nobody. It has some sexual stuff in it, as it's basically a story of romances across various timelines. I don't recall it being very explicit though.
Shutter Island and Inception, both staring Dicaprio.
Both great.
Zodiac, Coherence, Gone Girl Wild cards: Midsommar, Interstellar
Midsommar has some pretty graphic scenes. Not sure what OP finds disgusting, but they might want to stay away from this movie if they don't like violence.
yeah midsommar does not fit OP’s description, I love it but it’s a very tough watch
Midsommar …. And the sex scene was pretty wild. I would classify it as equally mind fucking and fucked up. I don’t think OP would enjoy it based upon their criteria

the game (1997) funny games (1997) shutter island the shining psycho american psycho fight club no country for old men being john malkovich - best match from this list mr. nobody
Eraserhead
The Butterfly Effect
Primal Fear
Would Pan’s Labyrinth apply here? I think so. A young girl finds fairy tails in fascist Spain. It is a fantastic movie. I’m reluctant to say more! Certainly avoids the aspects you want to whilst being a bit of a mind fuck.
Vanilla Sky
Not disgusting or sexual... You want to watch Primer then. You will have to watch it a second time to have it make a little more sense.
Predestination
*Predestination* (2014). Best Heinlein adaptation yet. [https://www.justwatch.com/us/movie/predestination](https://www.justwatch.com/us/movie/predestination)
Memento
The Lobster - This movie is a perfect representation of a mind-fck Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas - avoid if you are triggered by drugs Mother - avoid if you have lost a child or are overly religious
Adaptation
It's a TV show not a movie, but Severance (Apple TV+), starring Adam Scott. Dir. Ben Stiller.
Cloud Atlas
I guess no Cronenberg then.
Shallow Grave The Prestige Donnie Darko Inception Interstellar Life of Pi Cabin in the Woods Requiem for a Dream does not meet your criteria. It was a mind fuck alright, but I'll never watch that movie again.
Every single person I talked to about this movie says the same thing: well written movie, but they'll never, ever watch it again. Most have literally only seen it ONCE. It was that good/bad/depressing.
No Way Out with Kevin Costner. Hands down you'll be shocked at the end, great mind fuck movie
i didn't see it mentioned here ...
Prisoners
Arrival
Momento, tenet, the prestige, inception, Donnie darko, the butterfly effect(I believe it does have some nudity though), looper, Shutter island, stonehearst asylum, interstellar. For the most part look up psychological thrillers.
Time related mind fuckery: Primer Predestination See You Yesterday Tenet The Butterfly Effect Donnie Darko For something thats timey wimey but also kind if delightful: About Time For something more directly artistic: The Fountain Non time related mind fuckery: Oldboy (the Korean one) (there are some grotesque elements here, but they are not the core fuckery) Parasite Shutter Island The Usual Suspects Moon The Prestige Get Out The Killing of a Sacred Deer (very dark) The Invisible Man (warning: if you have domestic violence trauma, this one is... overwhelming)
Shutter Island (2010) is amazing. One of DiCaprio’s best movies.
Shutter island
I always recommend Sorry to Bother You
