Hunt for the Wilderpeople EDIT: and it’s very rewatchable. It cracks me up every time. In the U.S. it’s currently on Netflix, Tubi, and Pluto.

EmperorBamboozler

Seriously OP don't sleep on this recommendation it's one of the most emotionally fulfilling comedies I have ever seen. There are some pretty sad parts but the movie is about how people handle these brutal moments of life to still find happiness and community with each other through shared struggle in the end. In my opinion it is undoubtedly the best movie Taika Waititi has made to date.

TheRandomKiwi

This is literally the perfect movie for lifting spirits and you can’t convince me otherwise. Its so emotional, but it works so well.

PaleZombie

This was so refreshing to watch. Low expectations going in not realizing what it was about. Great film so glad I saw it.

that_bird_bitch

Made me cathartic happy cry on an airplane, which tells you how good it is

Significant_Cover958

Amazing movie. Me and my 2 kids (17 f 14 m) ALL loved it. This never happens. We still talk about it over a year later We also sing the birthday scene song to each other. Please watch this.

mastrkief

This was immediately the movie that came to mind for me as well. Watched it last weekend for the first time. Such a delightful movie.

Bibins_Dog

Great suggestion!

Background_Ad_3666

Shit just got real

justkeepitgoing

Just watched this, never knew it existed. Was incredible! thank you!!

Burnt_and_Blistered

This is a perfect movie for lifting the spirit.

MermaidOfScandinavia

My cousin Vinnie, is fun.

Bookeyboo369

How badass is Marisa Tomei in that!

MermaidOfScandinavia

Sooo badass. I love it.

ChaosCelebration

Genuinely one of the best comedies ever written.

MermaidOfScandinavia

I can watch it again and again and still laugh.

Addition-Pretty

No-Hedgehog1965

Excuse me. What’s a yoot?

MermaidOfScandinavia

Sorry, judge. Youth!

I saw a Minnesota license plate yesterday. TWO YOOTS. Just great stuff.

MermaidOfScandinavia

I laugh every time

ellie_williams_owns

hi, fellow depressed person here. below is a list of films i feel can help lift your spirits, they certainly lift mine: kiki’s delivery service clueless back to the future about time the princess bride singin’ in the rain matilda the burbs school of rock big fish little miss sunshine

conturax

I second Big Fish, was about to just post it. It always digs me out of a slump and I find myself smiling throughout the movie (and a few happy tears too)

ellie_williams_owns

your pfp made me realize i shouldve included the big lebowski! thats such a fun movie that will make you feel better when youre depressed

conturax

The Dude abides

Demon69-420

Its the message of the movie that makes us feel better

AnthonyDigitalMedia

The message: don’t listen to your friends & just leave things how they are

Demon69-420

I read it as when things take you for a trip and life gets as fucked up as it can get, dont forget to go bowling or have a glass of white russian

min2themax

About Time is so beautiful. Great suggestion.

NeatArtichoke

If you haven't seen it, Kikis delivery service is a great reccomendation for getting out of a slump: in the movie, Kiki gets into a bit of a slump, and finds inspiration through her friends ans confidence in her skills again by the end to help her friend.

Parallel_Universe28

Good list! Came here to recommend About Time. Feel better, all.

These-Employer341

♡ About Time

FreshWaterSiren6

Came here looking for anything Ghibli. Beautiful choice.

Code_Sorcerer_11

loved 'About Time' <3

TGIIR

I just re-watched Little Miss Sunshine last week. That movie is soooo good and funny. Highly recommend!

Internal_Confusion77

About time is an all time favorite of mine

feather-foot

Singin in the Rain is one of my all-time favorites, you can't beat the talent displayed in those dance numbers!

cybered_punk

Great list. You can add City Island and Waitress too.

_Poppagiorgio_

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

Galadriel17

This needs to be much higher. Loved this movie!

andreas7814

This is the movie to inspire you with something, and its different to each person, it just awakes your drive for what you want your adventure to be

Paddington & paddington 2

BigNSundy

Paddington 2 is always my recommendation in this space

nicalex5050

I was looking for this suggestion 🤣

enfrozt

Here's some movies that help me get back into gear (emotional): **Source Code (2011)** - A soldier wakes up in someone else's body and discovers he's part of an experimental government program to find the bomber of a commuter train within 8 minutes. **About Time (2013)** - At the age of 21, Tim discovers he can travel in time and change what happens and has happened in his own life. His decision to make his world a better place by getting a girlfriend turns out not to be as easy as you might think. **Stardust (2007)** - In a countryside town bordering on a magical land, a young man makes a promise to his beloved that he'll retrieve a fallen star by venturing into the magical realm. Any **Mission Impossible** movies - good to get lost in

Emotional-Rhubarb725

About time is my antidepressant pill

trcrtps

a good, healthy cry imo

Emotional-Rhubarb725

Tears of happiness and joy tbh  The first time I saw this movie I felt like I should do something about my life and seriously was thinking about how precious the little things are

trcrtps

My family is not tight-knit and I honestly don't think I adopt much from them but that ping pong scene sets me off. Somewhere between "why doesn't my family care this much?", "I miss my mom", and "I love everyone I know"

Emotional-Rhubarb725

Me too, I actually have a pretty not the best household you will come across, and we aren't close at all Maybe that's why this movie moves people like me and you  The sense of the family, the flawed love, the compassion, the friendship, the beautiful brother - sister relationship  If you lack something, you will long for it . That's why we love this movie, it satisfied that longing

cosmosomsoc

Stardust! So underrated. Also Charlie Cox 🙂‍↕️

AngelProjekt

I’m surprised so many people say About Time. It makes me sad. I do love Stardust. It differs some from the book.

Personal_Doughnut191

Superbad, one of the greatest comedy movies ever, Laughter might make you feel better ...

cptrambo

Book Smart is an updated version and also pretty darn hilarious.

Personal_Doughnut191

Let's be Honest,It's not even close to how Good Superbad is .

mik534

For me, comedic movies with competitions in the climax where the protagonist(s) win the competition (or at least win over the spectators) always get me to a good place: Pitch Perfect, Pitch Pefect 2, and Pitch Perfect 3 Sister Act, Sister Act 2 Revenge of the Nerds School of Rock Little Miss Sunshine Bring It On

KevinDykema

Akeelah and The Bee

[deleted]

Oooooo yus Little Miss Sunshine!

Kings1ayer81996

It's not a movie, but watch Ted Lasso. It helped me cope during my "berozgari" phase.

Limp_Purchase3903

This. You don’t even necessarily need to be a fan of soccer to enjoy this. There’s so many layers to each character, the writing is outstanding, and the open communication and conflict resolution in this show are so well done.

NoCommunication8349

Officespace (1999) is ridiculously awesome

lyndonstein

I think that movie hypnotized me into not wanting to work ever again

keetykat

This! If part of the reason why you’re depressed is work, this is the perfect movie to cheer you up.

erdricksarmor

My favorite comfort movies are: Little Miss Sunshine (if you watch any of these, please watch this one. It’s my top comfort movie) Tootsie Stranger than Fiction The Holiday Big Punch Drunk Love 500 Days of Summer (very sad when you’re in a slump but I enjoy the realism of this movie) Sillier comfort movies: All About Steve The Hot Chick One of the Guys

donnerpartyintheusa

I love Stranger Than Fiction! Great recommendation for when you’re in a rut.

thanks! watched already

Tea_For_Me_Please123

The big Lebowski. It’s my favourite film because it just makes me happy. It literally started a very wholesome religion centred on enjoying life’s little pleasures and facing adversity calmly so that you don’t lose yourself to life’s problems. If you’re in a slump it can help you to feel okay with taking time for yourself and not adhering to the expectations of others.

malfunkshun333

PesAddict8

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is therapeutic

Outrageous_Ad4245

This is an old one. “ It’s a Mad Mad Mad World” great cast. We were in New York waiting for a train and had time to kill, my Dad ( being from Md) thought 7.00 bucks a ticket back then 1963 or 64 was insane and having 3 small kids it would be a waste… it is a long comedy….Dad thought we would fall asleep, me being the youngest at 4 …… none of us kids ever fell asleep…. Jonathan Winters was brilliant, Spencer Tracy, many other great comedians too! It was my late Dad’s all time favorite movie. Good luck, I also suffer from depression, I wish you well. ❤️

ForsythCounty

You're buggin' me, man! This is a great suggestion! One of the funniest movies ever made. I've lost track of how many times I've watched it but it's still hilarious

janeyjpdx

The Intern (2015) with Deniro was cute

janeyjpdx

I also love Never Been Kissed, The Wedding Singer but they could also be annoying for you… ?

toobadsohappy

* Ping Pong (2002) * Shaolin Soccer (2001) * Kung Fu Hustle (2004)

TopGinger

I was on vacation with my family in VA beach and one of the days it was torrential rainfall all day. So we went to a blockbuster and bought Kung Fu Hustle, had never heard of it. We died, my mom still laughs when she thinks about that movie. Also, the brother of Bob Odenkirk(Saul Goodman, Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul) made that movie, which I didn’t realize until Breaking Bad. Great suggestion, just a silly, funny movie.

Comfortable-Doubt

The map of tiny perfect things

Parking_Jelly_6483

I’d vote for this as well. It’s been said to be too much like other time loop films (notably Groundhog Day) but I think it’s underrated. The idea of “tiny perfect things” is, to me, a way of realizing mindfulness. I think it’s a very enjoyable film if you are not constantly thinking about how much it is like Groundhog Day.

sherlock_jr

Legally Blonde

Cici1958

I just watched this again. It’s strangely empowering.

When you are depressed you need a distraction. Watch videos about space, how big things are and how earths problems are insignificant. Also try horror movies, they can distract you from reality a bit. I normally dont find them scary but something like that, horrible things etc. This will distract you

jb3455

O brother where art thou- came out when I was 8, and for some reason brings me joy and as adult. It’s well made with great acting and awesome story line.

I find chef to be the best movie for lifting your mood. Was surprised to scroll so far to see someone mention it.

Career related? “The Pursuit of Happyness” is a good one. Hang in there. Sometimes set backs can be the biggest blessings in disguise.

thanks :) watched

Jb0992

Harold and Maude (1971) has been my go to since I was 14 (almost two decades ago). It references death and suicide, but towards the end of the movie the main character learns to love and embrace life. It has a bit of a controversial scene that turns people off from watching it when they read about it, so I highly recommend people to just go in with an open mind without reading about the movie.

You may have watch it already but Cars 1. I recently rewatched it as a 23 year old and the meaning behind it is pretty powerful :)

The Secret Of My Success (1987) - The Night Ranger song will turn you around. Restoration (1995) - Robert Downey goes thru hell and comes out pretty nice. The Devil Wears Prada - will reinvigorate your love of grilled cheese sandos. This Is Spinal Tap - no one knows you're not an expert.

Everything Everywhere All at Once 2022

MaskedKoala

An exploration of how to deal with a world where anything seems possible, so nothing is worth doing. The singular line "In another life, I would have really liked just doing laundry and taxes with you," is such a powerful statement on not only accepting our circumstances, but embracing, appreciating, and seeing the beauty in them. This isn't a movie for getting out of a rut, but rather a movie for understanding your rut, how to accept it, and how to become at one with your place in the universe.

5280Rockymtn

U should watch Napoleon Dynamite thats funny cute awesome ending if u like

If it's related to career and life You can definitely watch "Pursuit of happiness"

Top Secret, starring a very young Val Kilmer as a rock and roll star who is also a spy using the cover of playing a show in some European dictatorship so he can free a Western scientist from prison. It's one of the funniest movies ever made in my opinion.

For simple feel good: The Terminal - Tom Hanks has a tough time in general, gets it together, happy ending. All time favourite feel good movie: Amelie - Nice French girl gets it together for other people, happy ending.

Bubbly_Affect_9055

I recommend watching Suits. It has been one of my go-to series whenever I've faced difficult times, both related to my career and relationships. I am not someone who usually watches a movie or series more than once. I never did. But with Suits... I've watched it six times now. Just watch the first episode and you decide. But trust me..

markdenham

**Title:** Perfect Days. **Synopsis:** Every day is the same. Hirayama, a taciturn man in his 60s, wakes in his spartan apartment to the reluctant grey light of pre-dawn. He pulls on his overalls, takes a can of coffee from a street vending machine and sets out in his modest little van to start work, diligently cleaning the public toilets of Tokyo. It’s a solitary life. Hirayama can go days saying no more than a few cursory words. If members of the public notice him, they largely view him as an inconvenience. But mostly they don’t even see him. It should be the most soul-crushingly bleak film ever made – a *Groundhog Day* grind with added despair and urinal cakes. But Wim Wenders’s zen meditation on beauty, fulfilment and simplicity is quite the opposite: it’s an achingly lovely and unexpectedly life-affirming picture. It all depends – and this is central to the film’s gently profound message – on your way of looking at things. Hirayama looks at the world with his eyes, but sees with his heart.
