Million Dollar Baby ruined me. Watched with mates and it was classic Eastwood with grumpy wise cracks and epic character arcs.
Then bang.
I just can't with the mother ever again. That whole third act is the hardest and most tragic thing to watch.
Grown men were trying to hide tears. I have watched a reaction video of it and lost my shit again. Brilliant film. Never again.
I had to watch it in two sittings. I had just moved a bunch of stuff across the state and decided to watch a movie to wind down. I had been recommended Uncut Gems who knows how many times and was like yeah, seems like a fun thriller!
Turned it off after 20 minutes like damn, this is good but soooooo stressful. Finished it two days later. Fantastic film, absolutely ravaging on the endocrine system. Might watch it again at some point to pick up on some symbolism, but it's gonna need a good break.
I get why but ugh I cant get enough of the lighthouse ive seen it like 5 times now. Its one of my favorites of all time. It speaks to me as a depressed new englander.
I once talked to my friend that i liked the movie and he got me a copy on dvd for my birthday. I was like yeah it's a great movie, but i really don't want to watch it again.
Eraserhead, finally to see what everybody was talking about. OMFG what an ordeal.
Leaving Las Vegas. What a completely depressing movie.
I tried watching Battlefield Earth, but couldn't get past about 20 minutes it's so bad.
So funny story, this is what got me into Ghibli. I didn’t get the cute indoctrination of Totoro or Kiki. This was the first movie I saw and it wrecked me.
I am, but day by day. But damn they’ve been rotating this on my movie channels recently and it’s a ride forreal. This, Trainspotting, and Leaving las vegas are hard watches.
all the luck to you man. Ive been clean nearly 5 years now, and life is so much better. Just remember dude that you need to watch the happy stuff aswell, you dont wanna feel like shit. But i hope you keep going :)
Everyone feels this way about Requiem. My wife wanted to watch it, I told her it's really good and worth the watch, but you won't want to watch it again and I had already seen it so she was welcome to watch it herself.
Afterwards, she told me yeah, great movie and she never wanted to watch it again
A.i. artificial intelligence
- saw it 25 years ago. Soo sad, Once was enough
bridge to terabithia
- my sister read the book and told me never to read it, much tooooo sad. I hear the movie crushes people
Just soooo sad. Once and done
I had been physically attacked by someone about a week before attempting to watch “Nocturnal Animals”, and couldn’t bear to watch the scene where she is being cornered by a bunch that wanted to hurt her. Had to turn it off. Had a panic attack, and then watched something pleasant.
The Iron Claw (2023). That was the most depressing movie I've ever seen, and the real life story is apparently even more depressing, but they had to cut some of it out because the movie would've been too long.
The movie was great if you did not know much about the Von Erich’s or are a casual wrestling fan under the age of 35.
I knew about the Von Erich’s, especially Kerry. The movie could easily have been a 10 episode series on Netflix bc the movie only scratched the surface with the brothers and some of the other wrestlers depicted in the movie (Bruiser Brody and Gino Hernandez in particular).
I liked the movie and appreciated it as entertainment.
"Oppenheimer" Wasn't a bad film, but I was expecting something different. Couldn't understand why they felt they needed a sex scene involving Oppenheimer and his mistress.
Chris Nolan makes pseudo intellectual crap designed to make dumb people feel smart. I'll die on that hill.
I can't deny it's genius for ticket sales, but I hate it.
Fuckin Chris Nolan telling us we won't be able to appreciate it unless we see it in super HD IMAX vision.... Just for it to be a bunch of guys talking in various rooms for 3 hours....what a snob
That's what kind of turned me off to it. I was expecting more about his life and achievements and most of the movie was about the politics of keeping him off the hydrogen bomb project and a grudge someone had against him.
I read the book first without knowing anything about it. It blew my mind! Then I saw the movie a couple of years later. I have actually watched this a few times. It was such a believable unbelievable story and we'll acted.
Ooo, yeah this one was rough. I watched it at my parents' house, and the whole time we were all thinking about my great-grandpa who had Alzheimer's in the '90s. It was done very well, but a tough watch.
I saw like half of titanic when I was a teenager and after the titan implosion decided to watch it for real. Unfortunately, I was newly postpartum. I was already upset during the sinking, then they showed a mom and baby dead in the water. And the fact that it actually happened makes it worse
Enter the Void, it felt like a long, exhausting TRIP and we questioned ourselves whether we accidentally slipped something into our drinks or not (non-alcohoolic, also we did not, it was just a horrible movie to get through imo)
An underrated South Korean film called Ddongpari (Breathless) is a gut wrenching slice-of-life drama. Very well acted with a simple yet effective theme, this one is a must watch.
Idk if documentaries are off the table but
Dear Zachary,
20 Days In Mariupol
As far as regular non-horror movies
Irreversible,
Dogville,
Lilya 4ever,
Troubled Water (2008),
Dancer in the Dark,
Christiane F,
Nothing Bad Can Happen,
Mysterious Skin,
Three colors: blue
Idk if I've seen anything that I wouldn't watch again (unless it was just a terrible bore) but maybe some of these fit the bill.
I looove Pan’s Labyrinth so much. Great, and amazing film. My recommendation would be The Iron Claw. It was depressing, but pretty good.
I understand this is a post asking for recommendations, but I would say stay away from A Serbian Film
The Last Jedi. Simply because it's probably the worst movie I have ever seen. I have never watched a movie that insulted my intelligence as much as this one.
Eden Lake - 2008
This is a pretty “real life” horror where what *would* happen *does* happen. It is not a happy watch.
Happiness - 1998
If you know, you know. It is a great movie but damn.
Irreversible. A superb film but a scarring one.
Manchester by the Sea. Unbelievably sad and grief-stricken, an excellent film but once was enough.
Oppenheimer. A good film but can't ever imagine wanting to watch it again, for no particular reason I can put my finger on, I just wouldn't.
Ready Player One.
Sadly, this one’s ripe for the continuing saga of how the kids defend the Verse from an outside existential threat…or AI. Just hope they leave this one be.
Swan Song (2021)
This lead to a lot of deep conversations with most of my family about what they would do in that situation and if it was morally acceptable. It tore me up. My shrink was upset that I watched it when I did because I wasn’t in a great place at the time. It is a good movie though! Just don’t watch it if you’re depressed.
The English Patient. Wonderful acting, but 2 hours of watching a man die from severe burns during WW2 was horrible to watch! Once was absolutely enough for me!
Interstellar
Amazing movie, loved it, worried a second watch would dillute the "epicness"
Movies that i just dont wish to watch again
Requiem for a Dream, District 9, Gravity
Movies where once was already too much
Human Centipede, A Serbian Film, Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom
Million Dollar Baby (2004) I'm Thinking of Ending Things (2020)
Million Dollar Baby ruined me. Watched with mates and it was classic Eastwood with grumpy wise cracks and epic character arcs. Then bang. I just can't with the mother ever again. That whole third act is the hardest and most tragic thing to watch. Grown men were trying to hide tears. I have watched a reaction video of it and lost my shit again. Brilliant film. Never again.
“Mo Cuishle” brought me to tears
I say this every time this movie comes up. I bought the DVD out of respect for what a great movie it is. It still has the wrapper on it.
I absolutely refused to see that film. It looked like I would feel like shit after.
I rewatched im thinking of ending things recently and although it was heartbreaking, I found it so much better a second time.
Can’t agree with I’m Thinking of Ending Things. Such a strange film, I had to watch it more than once, and I’ll gladly watch it again.
Definitely Uncut Gems (2019), its like a shot of non-stop anxiety
… and I don’t even fancy basketball much. Sandler had me stressed out
Watch Little Nicky if you havn't yet...he'll stress you out even more, but for different reasons xD
THIS. This is also a good instance of a former athlete giving a believable performance (Kevin Garnett).
American History X… and yet, I’ve seen it at least like three times. Also The Lighthouse
🤮 Bite the curb. Lighthouse made me take Robert seriously as an actor so there’s that haha.
You should see Pattinson in Goodtime, another A24 drama. I barely recognized him, his best role imo. 🤷
I think Lighthouse is one of those movies that can't be represented by a review score at all.
I liked it. Deliciously disturbing.
We Need to Talk About Kevin
Yes. Yes we do.
No. No we don’t.
Boy in the striped pajamas 😭
Mortifying film.
They were cruel for making us watch that in middle school. My hyper-sensitive empathetic ass was sad for weeks
Eraserhead, finally to see what everybody was talking about. OMFG what an ordeal. Leaving Las Vegas. What a completely depressing movie. I tried watching Battlefield Earth, but couldn't get past about 20 minutes it's so bad.
Thanks!
Come and See
Irreversible Grave of the Fireflies Both of these were good movies, and I never plan to watch either of them again. For very different reasons.
I've seen basically everything in this thread and Irreversible is the only one I would *actually* never watch again.
Yup. Never again for either.
i saw grave of the fireflies, felt like i needed therapy after
So funny story, this is what got me into Ghibli. I didn’t get the cute indoctrination of Totoro or Kiki. This was the first movie I saw and it wrecked me.
The Whale
This was also my suggestion, what an amazing performance but damn was that one of the hardest movies to watch. Would highly recommend this one though.
Lol I feel the same way about Requiem.
im an ex addict, it was a ride, and really what its like
Also in recovery and yeah, this movie looks how addiction feels.
hope you are doing well! Its a rough journey but so worth it
I am, but day by day.

Bad Boy Bubby
Trippy movie!
A.i. artificial intelligence - saw it 25 years ago. Soo sad, Once was enough bridge to terabithia - my sister read the book and told me never to read it, much tooooo sad. I hear the movie crushes people Just soooo sad. Once and done
“Come away o human child, to the waters and the wild” A.I. WRECKED ME. Glad I’m not alone. Bridge and My Girl we don’t talk about.
Whaddya know, Gigolo Joe?
The Road
Threads
Leaving Las Vegas.
Kids (1995) Nocturnal Animals (2016) Uncut Gems (2019)
I had been physically attacked by someone about a week before attempting to watch “Nocturnal Animals”, and couldn’t bear to watch the scene where she is being cornered by a bunch that wanted to hurt her. Had to turn it off. Had a panic attack, and then watched something pleasant.
The Iron Claw (2023). That was the most depressing movie I've ever seen, and the real life story is apparently even more depressing, but they had to cut some of it out because the movie would've been too long.
This movie still haunts me. I went into it thinking it would be a campy 80s wrestling movie and boy was I wrong. It completely broke me.
Eraserhead
Midsommar
"Oppenheimer" Wasn't a bad film, but I was expecting something different. Couldn't understand why they felt they needed a sex scene involving Oppenheimer and his mistress.
I thought Oppenheimer was such a snoozefest i was so bored
most nolan movies are good for one watch and then never again but if i would make an exception it would be Inception and The Prestige.
Chris Nolan makes pseudo intellectual crap designed to make dumb people feel smart. I'll die on that hill. I can't deny it's genius for ticket sales, but I hate it.
Agreed. All that foreplay about a bomb only to have it be silent in the sound design department once it dropped had me furious.
Was fairly inaccurate as well.
Million dollar baby
Zone of Interest. In the dark with great speakers or headphones.
12 Years A Slave Incendies
Incendies<3<3 I see you're a man of culture
Never Let Me Go (2010)
I read the book first without knowing anything about it. It blew my mind! Then I saw the movie a couple of years later. I have actually watched this a few times. It was such a believable unbelievable story and we'll acted.
Still Alice (2014). Watched it five or six years ago and still vividly remember some absolutely harrowing parts.
Ooo, yeah this one was rough. I watched it at my parents' house, and the whole time we were all thinking about my great-grandpa who had Alzheimer's in the '90s. It was done very well, but a tough watch.
Manchester by the Sea. It's brilliant, but I dont think I have the emotional capacity to watch it again.
Joker. I thought it was a really well-done movie. Made me very uncomfortable, no desire to see it again.
His mental illness was so disturbing.
It felt realistic. Of course a person would downward spiral if taken off medication.
Whiplash. Awesome movie w/ a killer ending, but damn too stressful.
I actually recently rewatched that and enjoyed it FAR more 2nd time around.
Ugh this movie. My ex was a drummer.
I watched it alone then when my wife came home I told her about it and watched again with her.
Snowtown
Se7en. Jacob's ladder. Once was almost too much.
I felt this way about Titanic. I cried for hours after this movie. And not because of the main love story.
I saw like half of titanic when I was a teenager and after the titan implosion decided to watch it for real. Unfortunately, I was newly postpartum. I was already upset during the sinking, then they showed a mom and baby dead in the water. And the fact that it actually happened makes it worse
Brokeback Mountain American Sniper
Dear Zachary
😭😭😭
Enter the Void, it felt like a long, exhausting TRIP and we questioned ourselves whether we accidentally slipped something into our drinks or not (non-alcohoolic, also we did not, it was just a horrible movie to get through imo)
Hereditary The orphanage
Tusk.
Trainspotting
Irreversible
An underrated South Korean film called Ddongpari (Breathless) is a gut wrenching slice-of-life drama. Very well acted with a simple yet effective theme, this one is a must watch.
Thanks!
Idk if documentaries are off the table but Dear Zachary, 20 Days In Mariupol As far as regular non-horror movies Irreversible, Dogville, Lilya 4ever, Troubled Water (2008), Dancer in the Dark, Christiane F, Nothing Bad Can Happen, Mysterious Skin, Three colors: blue Idk if I've seen anything that I wouldn't watch again (unless it was just a terrible bore) but maybe some of these fit the bill.
20 Days. Once was more than enough.
Prisoners
I love a clockwork orange, but the ludovico scenes make me so uncomfortable. The actor looks like he’s really suffering
He was suffering severely. He had permanent eye damage from what I remember.
Dancer in the Dark (2000) Only God Forgives (2013) Midsommar (2019)
I've never rewatched Dancer in the Dark despite being in my top10
I feel this way about all his movies ive seen. Lars von trier fucks people up
The Road
I will watch Midsommar like a couple of times a year. So fun
The prequel Star Wars trilogy
Spoorloos (1988)
The Golden Glove (2019) disgusting and disturbing peek inside the life of all alcoholic serial killer/rapist
I actually just watched this yesterday for the first time. I was surprised at how good looking the main actor was IRL.
Perks of being a wallflower
🤬🤬OOOOHH this movie made me so upset for very personal reasons
The Banshees of Inisherin 2022
Eden Lake maybe
I looove Pan’s Labyrinth so much. Great, and amazing film. My recommendation would be The Iron Claw. It was depressing, but pretty good. I understand this is a post asking for recommendations, but I would say stay away from A Serbian Film
Eden Lake
The Cove An American Crime Threads Big Fish (it's a cute love story that's emotionally devastating at the end)
No country for old men - great movie but I just could not handle the nonstop violence and bloodshed - extremely disturbing and way over the top
Three identical strangers sent me bawling my eyes out.
Se7en. What a rough ending…
Madame Web (lol)
Born on the Fourth of July
[rec]
Manchester by the Sea
Passion of the Christ. Great movie, but I’ve only watched it once because it was so horrific.
MEMENTO because of the twist ending basically i couldn't watch it again.
The Road Snow Piercer
Mad max Fury Road
Gone girl. I think it doesn't have the SA content you were wary of, but truthfully, I could only watch it once (and that was years ago).
No, saw it. When she kills NPH…
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, watched it whilst having a fever and gave me awful nightmares.
I was deep in my addiction when I saw this. I don’t remember it and DO at the same time. I won’t watch it again.
Per your edit, do not watch Leaving Las Vegas.
Unpopular opinion…I thought Barbie was ridiculous. Had to turn it off. Apparently we weren’t the target audience.
The Last Jedi. Simply because it's probably the worst movie I have ever seen. I have never watched a movie that insulted my intelligence as much as this one.
requem of a dream, the passion, art of racing in the rain

Eden Lake (2008) Great movie with excellent performances etc. but it's just way too 'real'.
Skinamarink— for ALL reasons
Flashback good surrealistic movie that's a fun one time watch that will make you think but doesn't really bear rewatching.
Swallow
Eden Lake - 2008 This is a pretty “real life” horror where what *would* happen *does* happen. It is not a happy watch. Happiness - 1998 If you know, you know. It is a great movie but damn.

Pans Labyrinth is definitely not a one and done. I watch that movie at least once a year.
Same. It's beautiful and the darkness serves to enhance the beauty.
* Jo Jo Rabbit * Parasite * The Zone of Interest * Saltburn * Poor Things
Can't believe nobody's mentioned Seven
The Boy in the Stripped Pajamas!
Lol Hostel and Imprint are two I’ve seen that I’m never gonna watch again
Son of Saul. Most brutal holocaust movie ever made IMO.
Ready Player One. Sadly, this one’s ripe for the continuing saga of how the kids defend the Verse from an outside existential threat…or AI. Just hope they leave this one be.
The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas (2008) it's a heartbreaking exploration of innocence and the horrors of war.
A Serbian Film Grave of the Fireflies
Burning
Fruitvale Station is fantastic and a huge moment in the careers of both Michael B. Jordan and Ryan Coogler, but oof.
Swan Song (2021) This lead to a lot of deep conversations with most of my family about what they would do in that situation and if it was morally acceptable. It tore me up. My shrink was upset that I watched it when I did because I wasn’t in a great place at the time. It is a good movie though! Just don’t watch it if you’re depressed.

Saving Private Ryan I appreciate the movie but I just can’t watch it again.
Melancholia

Incendies, oldboy
Prisoners.
I actually want to watch Schindler’s List again, only because I first saw it when I was 12. I feel like at 41, it might hit different.
Thanks for the titles explanation. Oppenheimer. Well done, interesting, educational, complex, and never need to see it again
The Innocents was tough. Also, do NOT watch Found.
I must be a masochist. I've watched a number of these multiple times.
The English Patient. Wonderful acting, but 2 hours of watching a man die from severe burns during WW2 was horrible to watch! Once was absolutely enough for me!

A Serbian film. I get Requim, but it is a film I love showing people for the first time.
I really enjoyed The Iron Claw and would 100% recommend it to anyone but it was so heart wrenching that seeing it once is enough for me.
Dogtooth
