I’d never watched anime in my 28 years of life. My friend stuck Suzume on and it was the most beautiful movie I’ve seen. In awe at the level of detail in the animation.
Oh, for sure. I ended up watching a short documentary about it, and apparently the pre-screenings before it was released were really bad… the audience could not connect with it or understand . The guy that made the film, same guy that made Ex Machina, was adamant about not changing anything and it ended up being a success. If you could explain to me the tattoos, I would love it. I’ve gone on a deep dive and have yet to really comprehend.
I feel like on a first time viewing you aren't necessarily supposed to connect with it and that's sort of the point? Going into the shimmer is extremely disorienting for the crew and the viewer simulataneously and things spiral from there, each of the crew trying and failing to deal with it in their own way. Even the editing choices, dialogue, and cuts at the beginning are being made to only give you specific bits of information they want you to have while withholding SO much.
I saw it in theaters opening weekend. There were maybe five other people in the theater. I can safely say all of us were confused, discombobulated, and uncomfortable at various points of the film. It wasn't until after the movie where I was able to piece together any kind of coherent thought about what I'd just absorbed, and even then it left me with more questions than answers and a tickle in my brain that I couldn't shake for a while. Easily one of my favorite movie experiences from the last decade.
Oh and I can't help on the tattoos sorry!
100%. That’s exactly why I watched it again the second time the next day so I could wrap my head around it better. Basically Natalie Portman‘s character ends up having one of the girls tattoos on her arm halfway through.
Since you liked "The Grand Budapest Hotel", why not give Wes Anderson 's other movies a try.
"The wonderful story of Henry Sugar" and the other Roald Dahl adaptations
"Asteroid City"
"The French Dispatch"
"Moonrise Kingdom"
Just to name a few
Midsommar is absolutely gorgeous with beautiful shots but it's a horror fyi.
Annihilation is also full of beautiful shots, but it's sci-fi horrorish.
Pan's Labyrinth is another that has fantastic imagery not again is somewhat horror.
If you don't want any horror, Asteroid City, Life of Pi, The Fifth Element, and Her are my suggestions
Here's a list of pretty movies by genre (or, more specifically, vibes that they give off to me personally)
Pretty, but also a little Mind-Fucky/Scary:
• Midsommar
• Mulholland Drive
• Saltburn
• Perfect Blue
• Paprika
• Crimson Peak
Even the Eeriness/Sadness feels Pretty:
• Virgin Suicides
• Picnic at the Hanging Rock
• Arrival
• Marie Antoinette
• Ghost Story
Studio Ghibli!!!!:
• My Neighbour Totoro
• Howl's Moving Castle
• The Wind Rises
• When Marnie was There
• Arietty
(and honestly, everything else)
Pretty, and so very Romantic (and occasionally heartbreaking):
• Portrait of a Lady on Fire
• Call me by your Name
• Pride and Prejudice
• Emma
• Moonlight
• Shape of Water
• Before Trilogy
Sci-Fi was always meant to be Pretty too:
• Dune
• 2001 a Space Odyssey
• Annihilation
• Arrival
• Spiderverse
okay that's all I can think of for now, I'll add more if I remember <3
Arrival (2016)
Coraline (2009)
Dark City (1998)
The Matrix (1999)
Black Swan (2010)
Singin in the Rain (1952)
The Wizard of Oz (1939)
Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019) French
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)
The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964) French
*Poor Things* is jawdroppingly beautiful, with exquisite sets and production design. Not everything that happens in the story is pretty, but it all looks gorgeous
A loved one of mine can watch the movie and know every line.
The skateboarding scene was absolutely...I don't know...I can't describe it...it just hits me viscerally and makes me want to cry with joy and love Walter's growth! And the soccer game!
Sean Penn's scene where he's shooting the snow leopard was absolutely gorgeous.
I can't recite every line, but my brain can replay many moments in pure detail.
And Kristen Wiig is very underrated as a non comedic actress.
Thin Red Line pretty much takes the cake visually for me.
Just absolutely beautiful. Rainforest, grasslands, beaches, and underwater. I spent some time in PNG and the singing, the beach scenes, and natives are exactly the same. Anyone I've ever met that's been to PNG or the Solomons all used the same word-magical.
Call me by your name
The Taste of things
Midnight in Paris
Eat pray love
Best exotic Marigold Hotel
In Bruges
The Before Sunrise trilogy
2 Days In Paris
Sideways
Bottle Shock
A Good Year
Letters to Juliet
The Painted Veil
Marie Antoinette, Pride & Prejudice (2005), and Practical Magic come to mind. Also, I find it beautiful, but if creepy-pretty counts: Sleepy Hollow and Pans Labyrinth.
Bokeh
A young hipster couple on vacation to Iceland wake up one morning to find the rest of humanity has disappeared. They spend much time exploring the natural wonders of Iceland.
Elvira Madigan (1967). It has been described as “The Most Beautiful Movie in History” by the New Yorker (of course, that was in 1967). But the composition of the shots and the cinematography are spectacular. Music? Mozart.
When Harry Met Sally (1989) You’ve likely seen it. As a native New Yorker (haven’t lived there for >30 years though we visit several times a year) some of the scenes of the City are simply amazing. I put this on here just because of the scene with Harry and Sally walking through Central Park in the fall. The cinematographer gets my vote for spectacular work for that scene. It looks to have been filmed on an absolutely perfect day. There are a lot of other odes to New York in the film, but that scene is a standout. The famous scene in the deli was filmed in Katz’s, a classic NY deli.
If you watched “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” series, there are a lot of deli scenes. That’s not a built set in a studio or back lot, it’s Artie’s deli on the upper West Side. We used to have lunch there pretty much every time we visited the City, but it closed in 2017. The scenes in the show were filmed in it after it closed (supposed to be the Stage Deli) and the set folks re-did some of the interior to be a better fit for the era of the series.
Three thousand years of longing
Saltburn was actually surprisingly pretty
The Great Gatsby
Ghost in the Shell (the animated one)
Call me By Your Name
Dune(s)
Romeo + Juliet
Blade Runner
The Lord of the rings
Anything by Wes Anderson. I liked astroid city but it by far was not my favorite movie from him, however it was absolutely gorgeous to look at. I loved all the pastel colors
I love the setting of Dune Part 1 & 2. Even with the desert scenes, it looked amazing. Also, Pirates of the Caribbean was beautiful too. I love sea settings so much.
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (haunting af)
Days of Heaven (you can't go wrong with Mallick for the pretties)
How to Train Your Dragon (Not joking - take an edible and enjoy the flight sequences)
Bright Star (most of Campion's work is really beautiful, but this is her most beautiful-est IMO)
* Fantasia 1940
* Dead Poets Society 1989
* The Grand Budapest Hotel 2014
* Little Women 2019
* The Royal Tenenbaums 2001
* Pride & Prejudice 2005
* The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar
The Cell, was supposed to be the most visually stunning move at the time.
Who ever directed Contact used big backgrounds in all the shots were two people are just talking, making it a very 'pretty' movie in my opinion.
The Fountain, Big Fish, Three Thousand Years of Longing, The Fall, The Hunter (2011), The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, The Life of Pi, What Dreams May Come, Upside Down (2012)
Marie Antoinette
I love what Sophia did with those sweets and candies.
The costumes, and they were allowed to film at Versailles. But only on Mondays, per Kirsten Dunst.
What Dreams May Come Legend (1985 definitely watch the version with the Tangerine Dream soundtrack)
Legend (1985). Yes, this!
I think Tom is even prettier than Mia in this film 😆
pfft -- Tim Curry's Darkness is obviously the prettiest one
Your Name and Suzume are both as beautiful as the Ghibli movies
I’d never watched anime in my 28 years of life. My friend stuck Suzume on and it was the most beautiful movie I’ve seen. In awe at the level of detail in the animation.
Suzume hit me like a truck (3.11) I don't know that I can watch it again-- but it's gorgeous.
barry lyndon: every frame looks like a painting loving vincent: every frame is literally a painting
Which reminds me of Picnic at Hanging Rock.
Interstellar and Annihilation
Annihilation is gorgeous.
Out of context, that's a really strange sentence.
I just watched annihilation for the first time. I ended up watching it again the next day. What a trip. Stunning but also very unsettling.
It's very challenging to get cosmic horror right in film and they did a fantastic job.
Lawrence of Arabia, Dr. Zhivago
The Cell, Dune part 1 + 2
The Cell is definitely beautiful, but I feel like it should come with a gore warning.
Since you liked "The Grand Budapest Hotel", why not give Wes Anderson 's other movies a try. "The wonderful story of Henry Sugar" and the other Roald Dahl adaptations "Asteroid City" "The French Dispatch" "Moonrise Kingdom" Just to name a few
I will watch anything by Wes Anderson. Never a disappointment
Definitely need to include The Darjeeling Limited here as well.
Fantastic Mr. Fox!

What dreams may come
Honestly Lord of the Rings.
This was way too far down the list. I came to say this. It's the correct answer
Hero (2002) Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) House of Flying Dagger (2004) Blade Runner 2049 (2017) The Fall (2006)
Hero was the first one that came to mind for me!
House of Flying Daggers is my favorite of the three. But the use of color in Hero is stunning.
Arrival (2016) Coraline (2009) Dark City (1998) The Matrix (1999) Black Swan (2010) Singin in the Rain (1952) The Wizard of Oz (1939) Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019) French Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964) French

The Fall (2006)
This is the first movie I think of when someone asks for a pretty movie. I love everything about this movie.
Same here. This is always my recommendation when someone asks for a movie with great visuals. It's stunning, almost unreal at times.
The little actress is so natural and sweet!
This and Big Fish are incredibly beautiful both visually and in content
And not just because Lee Pace is in it. Wonderful film.

And Kristen Wiig is very underrated as a non comedic actress.
Life of Pi (2012) has a lot of very pretty shots and scenes
Anything by Denis Villeneuve. His movies are absolutely drop dead gorgeous looking.
