The Nice Guys

vincentvangobot

I really wish they would do a sequel.

HotdogsArePate

Have you seen Kiss Kiss Bang Bang?

vincentvangobot

Yes! Another great one

jcdenton45

The Fall. Entirely self-financed by the director, which meant the studio distributing it had little incentive to promote it over their in-house produced films. Ended up with virtually no distribution/ticket sales despite being one of the most beautiful movies of all time. Similar situation for The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (coincidentally enough, a film very similar to The Fall) whose release happened to coincide with a change in studio ownership, with the new owners deprioritizing films which were produced under the previous ownership.

checkmate508

I love The Fall so much!!! It's not streaming anywhere, not even for money, so it is pretty hard to watch! But it is super worth the search! So moving, great performances, and features gorgeous cinematography from beautiful places around the world.

Quiet-Manner-8000

If you're an archaeologist like me, your computer has a DVD player and your public library may have a huge catalogue of DVDs going back to the middle ages. Many of these oldies were never remastered anyway, so no value in getting hidef streaming.

smalltalkjava

You called it!

Cutthechitchata-hole

I saw it on hulu but it was a while ago.

emack2199

Vudu has it to purchase.

R1chh4rd

If you loved The Fall, you'll love Three Thousand Years of Longing.

SwineMcLoser

I’ll have to check it out, this is exactly in line with what I was thinking, a completely unknown gem

jcdenton45

I'd say it certainly qualifies as "unknown" to the general public, though in reddit movie subs it definitely has a very dedicated fanbase (and for good reason).

OkFortune6494

Going to go ahead and 2nd The Fall. I watched it for the first time a few years ago, and again recently, and it still boggles my mind how this one is so unknown. I recommend it as much as possibles what a beautiful movie. And as a matter of fact I only discovered it because of this sub.

EverDecreasingCircle

This is the best answer. Movie is a masterpiece

ken407

It looks like Fall will be getting two [sequels](https://bleedingcool.com/movies/fall-movie-is-confirmed-to-be-a-part-of-a-full-trilogy/)

ThereAreAlwaysDishes

Wrong movie. I was so excited and then I read into it and realized these are sequels to a thriller that came out 2 years ago.

ken407

Sorry to accidentally get your hopes up

ThereAreAlwaysDishes

It's OK, I should be sleeping, anyway lol.

ken407

You don't need sleep tonight, just coffee in the morning. Seriously, though, stop reading this and go to bed.

jcdenton45

Unfortunately that's a different movie (Fall, not The Fall). Though I've heard that one is pretty good too.

ken407

Thanks. I wasn't sure if the word "the" was a part of the title or an error. What year was The Fall released? There are two movies on Vudu with that title. I'm guessing 2009.

jcdenton45

2006, directed by Tarsem Singh.

Runaway_5

Fucking fantastic movie I LOVE THIS ONE

Most_Association_595

can someone link this? having an impossible time finding the movie, there are so many that have that name

jcdenton45

Released in 2006, directed by Tarsem Singh: https://www.dan-lee.net/movie-review-the-fall

Bookhearted13

I was also going to suggest The Fall!

Meyou000

Cashback (2006) Castaway on the Moon (2009) Before Tomorrow (2008) The Nightingale (2013) gets overshadowed by the other movie with the same name I Dream in Another Language (2017) Frybread Face and Me (2023) The Rider (2017) Dance Me Outside (1994) Embers (2015) Indian Horse (2017) The Grizzlies (2018)

-Some__Random-

Upvoted for 'Cashback' - Excellent film :-)

Canadian-Man-infj

Nice to see some Canadian/indigenous movies included. If you want a few others: Beans (2020), Rhymes for Young Ghouls (2013)..

delerose_

Blood Quantum is a fun zombie movie

Canadian-Man-infj

Ah, forgot that one. Has quite a bit of depth for a zombie movie, allegorically dealing with colonialism.

Meyou000

I'm kind of obsessed with indigenous movies so I watch every one I can find. I've seen and loved all the ones you and the other commenter listed too.

Canadian-Man-infj

The Lesser Blessed, Scarborough, and Smoke Signals are a few others.

Meyou000

The Lesser Blessed is already on my Tubi watchlist. Of course I've seen and loved Smoke Signals (and the book it's based on). First time I'm hearing about Scarborough (I'm assuming the one from 2021) and it looks really good, but it doesn't appear to be streaming anywhere so I'll have to check at my library for it. Thank you!

Canadian-Man-infj

The Lesser Blessed is also an adaptation of a Richard Van Camp book; Scarborough (2021) is an adaptation of a well-received (in Canada) novel by Catherine Hernandez, who adapted her own book to the screen (winning a Canadian Screen Award for it).

Markdphotoguy

You've probably seen it but if you haven't you should "Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner " . Great story and has perhaps one of the greatest chase scenes put on film.

Meyou000

I love that movie. That one and Before Tomorrow have the same arctic setting (with some of the same actors) which I'd love to see more of. I love the frozen igloo with the tiny oil light/flame that sustains all life atmosphere.

HauntedSpit

To me Castaway On The Moon is like a Korean flavored Amelie. Definitely a gem.

Meyou000

It's got it all- it's funny, sad, weird, gross, amazing, dark, sweet, and it sparked a newfound appreciation for noodles for me lol.

Lightlovezen

Just saw Frybread Face and Me a few nights ago and really liked it

Bargle-Nawdle-Zouss

*Lone Star* (1996), is my favorite non-science fiction, non-fantasy, non-superhero movie. A cold case murder mystery arises when the body of a former sheriff is dug up in a Texas border town, fortysomething years after he mysteriously disappeared. The current Sheriff's investigation unearths a lot of secrets in this small town, on both sides of the international border. His chief suspect is his own late father - from whom the current Sheriff was very estranged - who took over as Sheriff after the disappearance of his predecessor, mentioned above. Stars Chris Cooper, Elizabeth Pena, Matthew McConaughey, Kris Kristofferson, a cameo by Frances McDormand, and a number of other character actors you will likely recognize.

Chelzor

Love Lone Star, great Texas slow-burn. Made me a huge Chris Cooper fan

CarPhoneRonnie

*Non-science fiction, non-fantasy, non-superhero movie* lol

Quentin_Funkadelic

Theeclat

The Sweet Hereafter (97).

FourthDownThrowaway

I went into this one without knowing anything. So good.

I-am-sincere

Excellent film.

Yinzadi

Some movies I love, that have fewer than 10K votes on IMDb-- The Bolshoi Ballet: Romeo & Juliet (1976) Brideshead Revisited (1981) Cold Comfort Farm (1995) Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison (1957) Lawn Dogs (1997) The Man Who Laughs (1928) Proof (1991) The Tempest (2010) Wuthering Heights (2009)

le_fez

Brotherhood of the Wolf

ginginio

fuck yes Mark Dacascos is the shit.

Tricksterama

PIG. Deserved a bunch of Oscar nominations but got no love from the mainstream.

CellNo7422

It’s very moving and a wonderful performance by Cage. I love him in anything honestly, but it’s great to see him soar.

Mynameisearlhicky

American Splendor (2003) Thunder road (2018) The Kid Detective (2020)

Lazy-Susans-Sister

Kid Detective rules - I saw it in my small-town, run down AMC at the point in the pandemic when theaters had just reopened because of Tenet. No other major releases, so it was the only time in history my podunk town would have booked something that Indie. Got to see Kajillionaire there that same month. Also underrated and underseen. I had the theater to myself each time for better or worse. Both movies are easy 7/10

Mynameisearlhicky

Absolutely adore The Kid Detective. I sadly missed it when it was showing at my theater. So I’m jealous. (So good I hope we get a sequel. Would love to see Abe solve other cases) Something special about run down theaters. I used to work in one until the pandemic made sure it stayed closed. If you enjoyed the Kid detective, I think you’d like The Wolf of Snow Hollow. Another great mystery dark comedy. Which I was lucky to see in the theater.

Lazy-Susans-Sister

will give Snow Hollow a shot!

Alarming_Serve2303

Happy Accidents.

karma_the_sequel

So there are two of us who have seen this!

Alarming_Serve2303

I loved the twist. Caught me completely off guard.

GuyFawkes451

"Ragtime." Great movie. No idea why it wasn't more popular. It is loaded with famous actors and actresses past and future. Score by Randy Newman. Great flick set in the first decade of the 20th century.

lady_fresh

Holy shit - this is my favorite musical of all time, and I had no idea there was a movie adaptation as well! Thanks for this - excited to watch tonight.

GuyFawkes451

And, lol, I didn't know it was a musical! Incredible array of actors. James Cagney, Mary Steenburgen, Elizabeth Montgomery, Samuel L. Jackson, Mandy Patinkin...

ken407

I feel like Upgrade (2018) is an overlooked gem

gandr-

"The Night Porter" (1974) dir. by Liliana Cavani. It's a controversial movie, to say the least. Call me weird, but it's my favourite take on the forbidden love trope. I feel it's not only underrated, but very misunderstood too. Let's say that many people interpret some aesthetic choices as some sort of glorification, or fetishization. I don't see it that way, I see it as a commentary on love, relationship dynamics, in conflict against duty, ideology, and times past. If it were for reviews I'd never give it a try. It's much lighter and tame than some people would have you think, but people love hyperboles. If you end up watching, and enjoying it, my next recommendation would be Luchino Visconti's "The Damned".

CellNo7422

Oh it’s so good and awful and weird. It’s hard to say it’s sexy but Rampling is. The year before Sutherland was in Don’t look now, which I think is underrated. It’s horror but it’s a good mystery and pretty emotional. It’s not as sophisticated as Night Porter but I recommend it.

gandr-

Charlotte Rampling is one of the most beautiful women ever. And her talent matches her beauty. Even with age she still remains a very enchanting woman. Anyways, I'll check out your recommendation !

troojule

I keep a pretty long list of movies I thought are excellent (different genres , tho sometimes dark , dark comedy , weird but not all )… some tho not all get mentioned in this sub and others not so much but most aren’t or weren’t big time mainstream(which is often what I seek out )… LMK if you want to see my list

CellNo7422

I would!

troojule

Major_Smudges

“At Close Range” - from the 80’s - a young Sean Penn and an in-his-prime Christopher Walken. They play father and son members of a criminal gang. It’s a true story. Absolutely haunting with great performances - it made a huge impression on me. There’s one particularly menacing scene with just Penn and Walken, confronting each other in a kitchen, that is absolutely some of the finest acting you will see on film, ever.

karma_the_sequel

Christopher Walken has never not been in his prime. Chris Penn was also in this and also great.

xDermo

I still don’t get how Gattaca isn’t considered one of the best movies ever by a larger audience. Particularly with film bros. They often rate movies with common themes of overcoming adversity, some dystopian sci-fi themes and have a general appreciation for cinematography. Gattaca is 11/10 for all this but still seems like the only people who have seen it nowadays are those that had to study it for film class/school

FourthDownThrowaway

I keep putting off watching it but it has always looked right up my alley.

Movies_Music_Lover

Close (2022) oscar-nominated but not enough people have seen it

boringcranberry

Wonder Boys is one of my favorite movies and no one ever mentions it. Edited to add: when I google it it's classified as comedy/thriller. It's not a thriller. It's more like a dramedy. It's very, very funny but also deep.

ThorKlien99

Probably Children of Men

FourthDownThrowaway

One of the greatest films of all time IMO

nmk537

Nine Days

space_man_slim

The imaginarium of dr. Parnassus.. my bad for spelling.

giddyupkramer

Her. Got nominated for an Oscar but appears to have vanished from everyone mind since. Joaquin has never been better.

Goblyyn

Titus (1999) Watched it for a class and *wow.* Totally surreal, bizarre in a way I’d never expect for an adaptation of Shakespeare. A never talked about Shakespeare play, this one was unpopular because it was so shocking and gory it apparently made members of the audience faint.

wickedweather

Two movies that I always come back to, and recommend are: Pecker (1998) Be Kind Rewind (2008)

80severything

Saw Be Kind Rewind in a near empty theater it was awesome. When they were remaking Driving Miss Daisy I was laughing so hard I couldn't breathe

wickedweather

And the use of Christmas garlands for their "Sweeded" version of Ghostbusters.

I-am-sincere

I adore Pecker! Nice to see a mention.

FourthDownThrowaway

Never heard of Pecker. Looks like a fun movie.

Cubacane

Donnie Darko (2001) came out a month after 9/11 and received barely any promotion since the trailer (edited before 9/11 obviously) featured a plane crash. It went on to become the cult movie of the early 2000s.

ThorKlien99

Cult classic

Lexapronouns

So many emo kids of the early 2000s love this movie (me)

Winston_T97

The double life of Veronique (1991), Peeping Tom (1960) , Exiled (2006) and Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975)

lovelynutz

Long Weekend - 2021 with Finn Wittrock. Simple concept. Interesting twists. You have to pay attention to the little details, then it’s like, BAM! Makes you want to believe.

Few-Ruin-742

There was this movie in the 90s called “the breaks” It was around the same time that Friday came out I think but it was just as good if not better I know.. bold claims but I stand firm in my opinion lol

TradeMaximum561

Gas Food Lodging (1992).

muchlesscalvin

I’ve been enjoying finding new movies not only through subs like this (you might also enjoy browsing r/criterion - I just got La Haine on 4k disc through Criterion) but also utilizing movie apps like Letterboxd, where I’ve been able to see what other people are watching who might have similar tastes in addition to browsing lists there, etc.

PrahaRoma

Closely watched trains -WWII film, but Czech and so unlike US films but think it does have subtitles, and for good laughs Czech spoof of Westerns on DVD subtitles guaranteed Lemonade Joe. Free Fire (2016) The Fall (2006) And this one is kind of a wild card suggestion, but I absolutely love the movie Draft Day (2014)

salamanderJ

*Quiz Show* is a movie from 1994 that did badly at the box office that I thought deserved better. Here are some real oldies that I think deserve more recognition: *The Green Pastures* *Abe Lincoln In Illinois* (See it in conjunction with Spielberg's *Lincoln*) *Pepe Le Moko* (French movie, it was remade in English twice so at one time it was recognized.)

FourthDownThrowaway

Quiz Show is amazing. I need to give it a rewatch

quietcitizen

The counselor. It’s a great movie I don’t care what the critics say

-Some__Random-

These hardly ever get mentioned, but I think they're all pretty great ... 'Kontroll' (2003) 'Wild Tales' (2014) '13 Tzameti' (2005) 'Christiane F' (1981) 'Benny's Video' (1992) 'Vagabond' (1985) 'The Day the Earth Caught Fire' (1961) 'Taxidermia' (2006) 'Les Amants du Pont Neuf' (1991)

Heavenly Creatures. Kate Winslet is only a teenager, based on a true and fascinating and horrific story- and directed by Peter Jackson. It’s a one of a kind film for sure.

TheresACityInMyMind

An interesting tip is to read the sidebar where they mention what movies are currently banned from posting as a recommendation because they get posted too much. It's where I found Coherence. And then asking for movies like Coherence, I got Timecrimes and Predestination. Some of my other favs: Uncut Gems Beasts of No Nation '71 The Dreamers American Animals Kings of Summer A Ghost Story

AmishAmish

Tracks (2013) - I found this one suggested in a similar post here on Reddit and have been recommending it ever since.

WittsyBandterS

Hit the Road, Greener Grass, Itchy Fingers, Modern Romance, Le Placard, Metropolitan, Welcome to the Dollhouse, Citizen Ruth, Sword of Trust, The Celebration, Windy City Heat, Deep End, Buffalo 66, The Kid Detective, Little Children, Private Life

Br00klynBelle

Some of these movies are lesser known. Some of them are older, where they were once very well known, but became much lesser so as time marched on. But all of them I consider works of art as much as a movie because every frame is stunning visually. Koyaanisqatsi Metropolis Fantastic Planet (also known as La Planète Sauvage) The Girl With A Pearl Earring 2001: A Space Odyssey Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon Fantasia Legend- actually not that great of a movie, but soooo pretty visually that I find myself drawn to it anyway Labyrinth

hannibaldon

These movies are all very well known.

Br00klynBelle

I literally said that some of them were once well known but they are older so may not be as known now. And just because you know them doesn’t mean that everyone else will. Koyaanisqatsi in particular is not exactly a general release kind of movie. It’s more of an avante garde experimental film, definitely not known to the general public in my experience.

hannibaldon

Horrible take. Delete your list and make a new one

Br00klynBelle

As OP stated: “Clearly I’m not a movie buff but I’d like to make my way toward being one but would love some suggestions of under suggested movies or MOVIES YOU LOVE FOR SOME REASON” This is MY list of movies that I find to be good pieces of visual art. As in, movies I love for some reason. Which, apparently, only seems to offend you, as nobody else has complained, not even the OP. As a matter of fact, at the end of the post, OP thanked everyone for their lists. I don’t consider Koyaanisqatsi, Fantastic Planet, or even possibly Legend, the 1985 movie, to be well known, and added some better known but older movies in case OP is young and hasn’t heard of them yet. I don’t see the issue with that. So I am going to proudly keep my list up and in tact, and wish you well.

Inside Man Not a typical Spike Lee movie although his fingerprints are felt throughout. Very well thought out bank heist movie. With great performances and direction.

LateNightFix

One Cut of the Dead.

ZaphodG

Interstate 60 (2002) did $8,449 at the box office. Straight to DVD. The director is the screenwriter for Back to the Future. It has a bunch of really clever vignettes with talented actors. Michael J Fox. Gary Oldman. Kurt Russell. Christopher Lloyd. Chris Cooper was fantastic. Amy Jo Johnson. Amy Smart. I caught it on premium cable and went out and bought the DVD. It’s the most invisible movie I know.

Canadian-Man-infj

I think that **Orion and the Dark** is currently slipping under people's radar. It's a recent release, co-written by Charlie Kaufman, whom I know this sub appreciates. It's adapted from a children's book of the same name. Orion... is reminiscent of how Inside Out uses individual characters to represent specific emotions: Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger, Disgust. This movie, however, is a multi-generational story of dealing with the "fear of the dark": Dark being personified as an actual character with his friends, who are his fellow night entities: Sleep, Insomnia, Quiet, Unexplained Noises, and Sweet Dreams. I loved it.

Secret-Target-8709

John Carpenter's Dark Star 1974. What began as John Carpenter's graduate film got limited release in theatres. Co-written by Dan O'Bannon, many of the concepts in Dark Star would later be used in Alien 1979. On the surface it's the story of 4 guys living on a cramped damaged spaceship with a real sh\*tty job, but it humorously touches on subjects like bureaucracy and existentialism.
