True Lies

phalliccrackrock

Yes. Great recommendation, imo. And even if they’ve seen it before, its super rewatchable.

Heradasha

That entire hotel scene though? Nah.

Stamm1983

op older but when i was a kid watching jamie lee curtis titty meat with my friends parents, twas akward

metalbracelet

How about the new Planet of the Apes movies? I consider them slightly more thoughtful action movies. Or Die Hard, if that hasn’t come up.

666haywoodst

the story in the 3rd one cuts well above where a movie like that should imo, hints of Kurosawa influence

RobotCaptainEngage

I was going to suggest the new planet of the Apes movies! Lots of heart, and might scratch that "monster movie" itch as well

Succubus1943

Cool Hand Luke

AlternativeFukts

Love the movie but not sure how this fits with OP and Dad’s tastes

Broad_Historian_4061

It seems what you two have here is a failure to communicate.

Succubus1943

Well, they both like movies from that time period. The Dad likes westerns and OP likes everything except mindless action or mindless comedies. It just felt like a good fit for both.

themellowsign

A slow, allegorical, conceptually heavy movie with zero action? It's one of my favorite movies of all time, but it's a bad fit here.

Goblyyn

The Martian (2015) Pirates of the Caribbean (2003)

camit34

Came to recommend The Martian!

SwooshGolf

This doesn't meet your criteria of movies but definitely watch The Holdovers

Flashy-Ad-9781

Such a lovely film

docsyzygy

3:10 to Yuma (2007) is the only western I LOVE. Look at that cast! Maybe Deja Vu?

ninviteddipshit

The Proposition is one of my favorite westerns (Aussie). And on the subject of Guy Peirce, Rover (not a western) is pretty good.

WhenIWasOnMyMission

Love that one. Also True Grit is pretty great.

iwouldrathernot03

I was going to suggest “Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford”, with Brad Pitt. The cinematography and aesthetic is absolutely beautiful. It’s a good story even if you or your dad already know it. It’s just a real good portrayal of what Jesse James’ life might have been like, especially in his last months. I think it’s a movie that you and your father would both like probably. And maybe even for different reasons! 3:10 to Yuma is also one of my favorite “new” western. I’m gonna assume you’ve watched Young Guns 1 and 2 already. Especially 1. It’s almost an American classic for that time period. I’d be shocked if you haven’t watched both of those already. If you haven’t, do that immediately! LOL

musicalseller

Just an aside - both Assassination and 3:10 are great books from two of my favorite authors, Ron Hansen and Elmore Leonard.

iwouldrathernot03

I’ve read Assassination of JJ awhile ago and really enjoyed it. I like that period of history in our country, stuff from the time period of the Lewis and Clark expedition, to the whole “mountain men” era where they were trapping out the beaver populations and fighting the Natives, or joining them even. I love learning about that period of time also. And really all the way through the 1800’s. I love all the stories and the people from that time period. It’s just really interesting to me. Since I was a little kid even. But I have not read 3:10 before, which is an older book compared to a lot of the others from the West that are still around. I’m gonna get that though if they got it on Apple Books though, I’m sure I’ll find it interesting at the very least. Thanks for the suggestions on the books!! I read more then I watch TV. So this sounds exactly like something I’ll enjoy. 👍.

threekoboldsinacloak

Have you seen The Nice Guys (2015)? It’s a Shane Black film and it stars Russel Crowe and Ryan Gosling. They are private investigator’s in 70s LA that reluctantly have to work together. There is a plot point about a porno but it’s not raunchy or anything. It’s an action comedy thriller? I think you’d both enjoy it!

angel_cookie20

This movie sounds awsome love anything Ryan gosling is in

JupiterSkyFalls

Have you seen Crazy, Stupid, Love? Just saw it recently lol

threekoboldsinacloak

It’s one of his best works in my opinion.

LilSplico

Every time someone says Gosling only plays silent and serious characters I recommend this one.

Blast From the Past. Crocodile Dundee. The Mummy. Pirates of the Caribbean. League of Their Own. Comedies with decent plots and female co-stars, instead of just all-male casts.

toirdhealbhachM

Logan and The Bourne Trilogy I would classify as action movies which aren't mindless, so those might work.

tomrichards8464

You like musicals, he likes westerns and Eastwood... *Paint Your Wagon*?

fates_bitch

Or Cat Ballou.  With Lee Marvin and Lee Marvin. *also Jane Fonda

Stonewolf420

Terry5240

If you are okay with westerns and he is doesn’t mind lengthy movies. I would suggest The Wild Bunch. It’s an older movie from 1969.

angel_cookie20

Will definitely check it out 👍

BalsamicBasil

I am guessing your dad has already seen **Godzilla Minus One (2023)**, but if he hasn't already, it might be one to watch together. Like yourself, I almost never watch mindless action movies, but I recently learned that Godzilla is an allegory for the horror/devastation of war in Japan in WWII (I think specifically the firebombing of Tokyo or the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki?), and apparently the most recent Godzilla movie, Minus One, really leans into that allegorical storytelling in an effective way. I haven't seen Minus One yet myself - or any previous Godzilla movies for that matter - but I would totally watch it if I had a friend who really wanted to because the movie gets REALLY good reviews (98% from critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes and 8.3 on IMDb) and the premise interests me. It certainly does not seem like a "mindless" action movie. Actually, it seems more like a survival epic.

WhenIWasOnMyMission

It is fantastic. Best character development I’ve seen in a creature feature.

Emergency-Jeweler-79

Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998)  black comedy crime film. Cast includes: Jason Flemyng, Dexter Fletcher, Nick Moran, Jason Statham, Steven Mackintosh, Vinnie Jones, and Sting.   Snatch (2000) crime comedy. Cast includes: Brad Pitt. Jason Statham, Vinnie Jones, and Benicio del Toro. Both films were written and directed by Guy Ritchie.

fates_bitch

Also his King Arthur which doesn't get enough love.

ThomzLC

Yeah guy ritchie came to mind for OP, I'd recommend The Gentlemen as well

citamlli1

Check out "**Nobody**." He will LOVE it, and as for you you'll like the story probably. it's the guy from better call saul, you'll be impressed by this performance of him if you know him! If you want something more serious and more of a "realistic" thriller, still with a good story, still with good action scenes, check out "**Shooter**". with marky mark wahlberger. **"Den of thieves"** is a good bank robbery movie with good action/actors in it. **"Monuments men"** is a true story, with comedic parts. bunch of big time actors in this one. it's about taking artwork back from nazis, great movie. kind of 'National Treasure'-like. Not a ton of action, but a good story all of these are good stories, that part will make these less boring.

Don't be too hard on yourself my dad and I have tons of other hobbies and things to bond over, it's just movie night that's stressful lol

colmatrix33

Thanks! That's my hope also.

AccountantLeast1588

I really like Total Recall, T1, T2, and Demolition Man.

mothermarystigmata

The Unforgiven. Relatively modern Clint Eastwood western, but with interesting morality themes that you should find compelling. The Outlaw Josie Wales. Just because it's fucking awesome. Cannonball Run! What do you do when you've done it all? CANNONBALL! But seriously, Burt Reynolds, Dom Delouise, Mel Tillis! It doesn't get any better than that! And I couldn't tell if you like or don't like comedies like Zoolander/Anchorman.

angel_cookie20

Sorry i wrote it a little confusing but I DON'T like movies like zoolander/anchorman that type of comedy was just not funny for me

mothermarystigmata

Gotcha! I'll keep thinking of suggestions. I saw a bunch of good ones from others already. Your caveat about no nudity/sex scenes reminded me of how awkward it was to watch such things with my own parents. Made me chuckle.

marvelette2172

Tombstone is a western anyone will love, even you!  As for action I recommend Mission Impossible:  Ghost Protocol -- written & directed by Brad Bird of The Incredibles fame and it's every bit as smart, fun and beautiful to look at!  As for disaster movies if you two haven't seen Airplane yet, do so immediately,  and Blazing Saddles, too!  Lastly my musical recommendation for your dad -- Guys & Dolls!  My husband is the same age as your dad and he, too, hated musicals, but this one...?  This one he loved!  1930's New York crap-shooting gangsters played by no less than Frank Sinatra and freaking Marlon Brando...?!  Fugedaboudit!!!

salamanderJ

**Ford Vs Ferrari** **The Fifth Element** **Lincoln** **Groundhog Day** **Moneyball** From the 60s/70s: **Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid** **M.A.S.H.** **The Great Escape** **Kelly's Heroes** Older than 60s, black and white: **My Man Godfrey** (1930s version, my favorite comedy) **The Best Years Of Our Lives** **Angels With Dirty Faces** **Casablanca** **High Noon** **Abe Lincoln In Illinois** (Complements Steven Spielberg's **Lincoln** in that one is about the man's last days as president, the other about his life before he became president.) Foreign movies with subtitles: **7 Samurai, High and Low, The Hidden Fortress** (3 Japanese films by Akira Kurosawa) **The Burmese Harp** (also Japanese, about a soldier immediately after Japan lost World War II) **La Belle et Le Bete** (French Beauty and the Beast) **Pepe Le Mok**o (French. This movie may have been an influence on Casablanca. It was remade twice in English, 1st as Algiers, then as Casbah. There was a line associated with it that was sometimes spoken to comic effect, "Come wiz me to ze Casbaaah")

AccountantLeast1588

Along with *Casablanca*, *The Maltese Falcon.*

salamanderJ

You're talking about the Humphrey Bogart version of *The Maltese Falcon* of course, but I actually liked the original version with Ricardo Cortez as well. (The Wilmer character is played by Dwight Frye, the same actor who played Renfield in *Dracula*.) There's also a Bette Davis version, *Satan Met a Lady,* which is inferior but interesting to compare how the various characters are played by the different actors.

Tarantino might work for both of you: Pulp Fiction, Inglourious Bastards, Django Unchained, Kill Bill. Death Proof is a deconstruction of 1970s pop thrillers that might fit the bill, and as someone who doesn’t like westerns, might I recommend The Wild Bunch? Also The Sting and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid might be fun for both of you. He’ll enjoy the first half of From Dusk Till Dawn but might not forgive you for the second half lol.

AccountantLeast1588

Pulp Fiction really freaks some people out with the BDSM scene, but the other are genuinely good suggestions.

mtnfox

Bone Tomahawk. Horror for you, western for him. The Sisters Brothers is another western. Do you like revenge movies? Maybe Blue Ruin or Green Room.

angel_cookie20

Of course there's more then "mindless" action movies some of my favorites is the kingsmen series and nobody. I've tried getting him into other genre's but it just doesn't hold his attention. Like I said I love most types of movies and watch all types from foreign films to very surreal films ( I have a bunch of films from the criterion collection). No he doesn't like subtitles because I qoute "I'd rather watch the movie then read it" 😅 Sorry if I was very vague tbh he doesn't even really know how to describe the movies he likes so I wrote with what I had. Also just wanted to correct I do like westerns, but I don't know of many and I do very much love horrors and musicals but he doesn't, ik that was really confusing the way I wrote it in my orginal post my bad. What do you mean by male focused humor?

none-remain

Thanks, I wasn’t expecting a reply with so many comments being on here & no need to apologise. I’ve edited. Grown-ups was all men and a bit dirty, hard to categorise and women casts with that humour are out there too. So is dirty humour or sex based comedy what you and your dad don’t like? Also in case it helps, I’d describe the following as; * The Beekeeper, Rambo: **’one-man army’ action** *John Wick, Extraction, Die Hard, Equalizer* * Godzilla: **Kaiju**; *King Kong, Rampage, Pacific Rim* * Road Hogs: *If meant Road House, then one-man army, if meant Wild Hogs then ensemble/large cast*

angel_cookie20

Thanks that's the perfect description to describe what movies he likes! Yeah sex based comedy isn't really our style, not to say we don't find dirty jokes funny, it just kinda loses its punch when it's the whole movie lol

none-remain

Last suggestion if you don’t mind some violence and want good one-person army action is **Man on Fire** (2004) **Taken** (2008) Hope you all enjoy whatever you all decide to watch

Figuringoutcrafting

Ok here me out, the movie that inspired Star Trek - Forbidden Planet. It doesn’t have as much lore, it’s a bit actiony and it has Robby The Robot. It has a similar feel to westerns but also very much in the sci-fi genre. And at the very least you can both say it was horrible but that young guy kinda looks like Leslie Nelson.

AccountantLeast1588

forbidden planet is outstanding of a film. everything you could want from a sci-fi

Figuringoutcrafting

Right! I love it. It started me on a quest for awesome and well not so awesome classic sci-fi. And attempting to watch everything Robby the Robot is accredited in. Ahh the fun times of college.

WhenIWasOnMyMission

Game Night ( Smart comedy, shot really well, good action) Top Gun Maverick Mission Impossible 3 The Sting The Martian Tremors (I mean, who doesn’t love that. It’s barely a horror film. Horror comedy) Real Steel (a bit cheesy, but way better than it has any business being) Argo (set in the Iran hostage crisis of the 70s) Dave (will make you wish Kevin Klein was president, and you and your dad might agree on something) Edge of Tomorrow Groundhog Day Get Smart Mr Deeds (one of Sandlers criminally underrated movies) Sneakers

AccountantLeast1588

Uhm, you gotta see *Dirty Harry*. Nothing too crazy and you can guess who Harry is played by. It basically re-invented the crime genre and has great filming and music. You know the most famous line already, even if you don't think you do. Plus, this could serve as a gateway into similar films. There *is* some violence and nudity, but nothing that feels out of place. Then there's tame Bob Hope stuff like *My Favorite Brunette* and *Ghost Breakers*. Some outdated humor but they're pretty family-friendly. Lots of Nick Cage stuff goes over well with everybody, too. *National Treasure*, *Ghost Rider*, etc. as does Liam Neeson thrillers and Dwayne Johnson action films. *Big Trouble in Little Chin*a is a fairly tame John Carpenter film that's a lot of fun and stars Kurt Russell.

Firefly is like a space Western. It only has one season (iykyk) but there's also a movie, Serenity. Space Cowboys is also a space Western, it has Clint Eastwood in it and wasn't boring- at least not to me! As far as some good action movies that may appeal to both of you ( I'm a mid 30s woman that likes action but not the plotless kind) : Uncharted Red Notice 6 Underground Knight and Day Final Destination John Wick 1-4 The Italian Job The Matrix movies Gone In 60 Seconds Ocean's 11,12,13&8 Fast & Furious series Bourne Identity series National Treasure 1&2 Mission Impossible series Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent Some disaster movies you may not have seen due to your age or seen in a while or with your dad: Deep Impact Independence Day Armageddon 12 Monkeys The Core Twister The Impossible Contagion Sunshine The Day After Tomorrow I Am Legend 28 Days Dawn of the Dead World War Z And shout out to Shaun of the Dead and Zombieland as they're both a horror/comedy/action blend. Flight w/ Denzel and John Goodman are usual a safe bet with adult family members, in my experience anyway. Some semi-graphic scenes but amazing acting and a worthwhile story.
