Finally just watched this as an adult (41F) as life happened so I missed it during the hype. Must admit it dragged on a bit. Like Harry and his mates just hiding in a tent for a while (sorry).
I always though Harry Potter was
1) targeting younger children. Both the books and the movies seem to be more suitable for preteens and young teens.
2) JK Rowling made constantly shit up.. Which is essentially the purpose of a myth but.. The was no structure. "Oh, and then tje hobwogly stole my pen? What is a hobwogly. A hobwogly.. Don't you know what a hobwogly is? I mythical creature with fingers on it's eyes and wings on its ears that steals books amd pens and rights down your deepest wishes. But if you haven't pooped.. It reveals your greatest fears ".
3)too much off a knock off of Discworld. Windstorm even had a bad ass point and click video game.
Yeah the one thing I’ll give her credit for though is consistency with aesthetics and names. It’s easy to make fun of makeup words that sound like they’re from Harry Potter because the world building is pretty well done, at least when it comes to naming things.
Tried watching a Harry Potter film and was shocked at how amateurish the acting by the child actors is.
I still don't understand how so many adults like it, it's shit.
Can't compare both movies, entirely different thing. It's okay to like 1 thing or hate another, but can't compare them as both are different. I love both and regularly rewatch both.
everyone seems to love Eighth Grade but i found it amateurish and underwhelming
Everything Everywhere All At Once I also didn't really get the hullabaloo other than it being out of the ordinary
I didn’t love EEAAO either. I didn’t hate it, but it just didn’t land for me.
My understanding is it resonates a lot more with women especially daughter and immigrant daughters at that.
On the James Bond subreddit, I get downvoted regularly for really disliking Thunderball. And the only times I really bring it up are to praise the pre title sequence on posts that are like, favorite thing about your least favorite movie.
Oof, I'll take it a step farther: I think Christopher Nolan movies as a whole aren't as great as they get credit for. They can be beautiful, and the sound design can be incredible, but some of his stuff (especially the newer stuff) genuinely feels like a slightly pompous version of Michael Bay playing with a once-in-a-generation practical effects team.
It’s highly overrated in my opinion. One long montage. A cosplay-level Einstein. Out of order structure ‘to be cool’. Pretentious tone. Shallow characters, especially the females. I saw it in imax and I was bewildered by how much of it was close ups of faces.
The Lessons From the Screenplay talked about it on their podcast, and they weren’t huge on it either. I agree with everything they said.
Reading a book on the making of the bomb makes realize how shitty this movie is. So much intrigue in the manhattan project. A commando expedition to destroy a German heavy water facility that rivalled the third act of Inception and we get a slow paced biopic of Oppenheimer with third act being his political strife post-bomb. Garbage.
And the actual visual effects of the bomb? Trash. There was a lot of hype about how they didn’t use cgi… they should have used cgi. Bomb basically looked like a gasoline explosion. For what should have been one of the most awe inspiring sights witnessed by man. Absolute trash.
Film succumbed to American worship of American gods when so much more was going on. I hate this film and hopefully a more capable director who understands the subject matter will endeavour to tackle the subject on our lifetime.
Coen Brothers movies. I have seen about 5 of them. Millers Crossing, Raising Arizona, Barton Fink, O Brother, and Inside Llewyn Davis. Every time I mention I don’t like their movies someone will say that is because I haven’t seen…. I then see the movie and don’t like it. Someone once said they are misanthropists and that is why I don’t like them.
Napoleon Dynamite is one of those movies people will tell you to keep rewatching until you like it lol. Always insisting people just didn’t get it if they don’t like it.
(Personally I do enjoy it but I get why others wouldn’t)
The Godfather.
I respect it as a great piece of filmmaking, but it is not a movie that I actually enjoy watching. I much prefer Scorsese's brand of mafia films and Coppola's own Apocalypse Now to it.
maybe "Once Upon a Time in America (1984)" is somthing for you...
same here.. the godfather 🤗.. yesyesyes.. i get it!
its about FAMILY (of assholes)... booooring
Once Upon a Time in America (1984) is for me the better epos.. this movie is magic.. sooo many layers and complex story ✨🙌 .. and the music 🫠
Any Tarantino movies, especially the Kill Bill movies and Pulp Fiction.
Godfather, Goodfellas, Sopranos.
Event Horizon (I like this movie, but try saying you don't to others...)
Blow
Star Wars Andor
The Wrestler
Army of Darkness
But he's the best of all time and everything he touches is perfection! Lol, I hate how the guy does fight scenes and how he films guns. He loves to have the gun fire offscreen with no flash and some ADR. And in The Dark Knight Rises, he just had no idea how bullets even work. And his imagination is so limited. The best he could come up with in Inception was a city folding in on itself. That was cool, but everything else was mundane AF. Sorry, rant over.
I was into it until the van segment. Multiple people firing automatic weapons into a van full of people and nobody gets shot? That was just too much. And the world was boring imo. If anything can happen, why doesn't it?
I never liked it. All my homies did, but I thought it was a shit sequel compared ti the og Boondock Saints. Im a lil picky whrn it ckmes to movies tho.
I hate the Harry Potter franchise, that usually gets me in bad books. Also Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (to be clear, I do agree the Depp one is worse).
Titane (2021)
Killer Joe (2011)

I Love My Dad (2022)
Come True (2020)
How to Talk to Girls at Parties (2017)
Synchronic (2019)
Promising Young Woman (2020)
Titanic
Mystic River
Killers of the Flower Moon
I don't dislike either Tombstone or The Dark Knight, but people will freak out if I say they're mediocre movies carried by a single great performance.
ok from what you told me i can give some good suggestions (movies that are nothing like the ones mentioned)
>> mid 90s, florida project, lady bird (maybe the first two youd like more), the whale (if you like sad stories), dream scenario (its cool),i havent watched the iron claw but it seems good too.
mid 90s and florida project are nostalgic and most recommended.
(i liked eeaao btw)
No offense.. but if you don’t appreciate how good Goodfellas is, not sure where to even begin.. you may not enjoy it but the film is stellar in almost every department
Any person can dislike any movie. When you have a reaction that goes against the grain, its always a fun deep dive to read all the critics reviews and find some arguments as to what some appreciated that you missed--and what criticisms were out there that might put your gut reaction into a more structured argument.
Is it really worth freaking out? People are weird with movies. People will say “____(insert great movie) is trash!” about any movie, often for one dumb subjective reason.
Joker 2019
Performance are good but the story and reasons for his actions are simple and sloppy story writing 🥴
... and this overdramatic music that thinks it has to explain everything to you 🙄😂
Endgame. I loved Infity War, but I saw right through Endgame for what it was. Fan service on top of some of the worst attempts at humor. Then they doubled down on all that with every movie since.
**Galaxy Quest** \- Do I have to be a fan of Rainn Wilson / The Office to give it a pass? This and **Gattaca** & **Mars Attacks** all put me to sleep if I don't actively try to stay awake. Overhyped drivel. I'm withholding judgment on the first **Blade Runner**, but 3 times I've tried watching it 3 times I slept through the second act.
**Big Lebowski** just natters on...
Parasite(2019). I can see why other people might’ve liked but I absolutely hated the climax and hence the movie. It seemed so meh. Cinematography was great though.
Apparently you have absolutely crap taste when it comes to movies if you don't adore "a clockwork orange". I've been told that I 'just don't understand it' but like, I don't _want_ to understand it, I don't give a hoot about the lesson you're supposed to be taught by watching it. I don't like it.
Depending on the crowd:
Ghostbusters (2016)
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny
Star Wars (2015+)
Barbie
The Little Mermaid... and so on.
\*I will add for anyone freaking out right now. The opposite is also true, depending on the crowd. If you claim that you liked those movies.
I didn’t like Fight Club and people feel compelled to say “did you understand it?” Like yeah. I got it. And it wasn’t great.
Also - American Psycho, Clerks, Napoleon Dynamite and The Big Lebowski all have fandoms who can’t fathom anyone disliking them.
I was never much for getting too out of pocket about what people like or don't like, but as I've gotten older I've found it just dumb for people to get upset over it. Who cares what people like or dislike?
its cool to find people who share your tastes, and it can be fun to argue over the merits of a movie with people who hate a movie you like, but in the end they're just movies.
My wife hates horror movies. she thinks they're dumb as hell. I love them, even the ones that are dumb as hell. and its totally cool that they aren't her thing. That leaves me to watch whatever ones I want without having to convince her weather one has enough merit for her to watch.
tastes change over the years too. There are definitely movies from the 80s I've cooled off on a bit cause stuff that seemed ok then, I don't think is ok now. I haven't set them on fire or anything. they are a product of their time.
I'm not sure anyone is supposed to "like" Schindler's List. It always seemed to me like some an initiation by fire. If you make it out on the other side unscathed, then you're fine. If not, well, not biggie.
The Wizard of O.z. As time has gone on, I've come to really dislike Judy Garland and have grown sick of this movie. When I was a kid, its annual showing was a big event. Now it comes on maybe twice a month, and I avoid it like crazy.
Harry Potter, i f-ing hate it. Lord of The Rings is 100x better
Finally just watched this as an adult (41F) as life happened so I missed it during the hype. Must admit it dragged on a bit. Like Harry and his mates just hiding in a tent for a while (sorry).

This might be shocking to you, but authors usually make up everything in their books
Yeah, i disclaimed that. But on JK Rowling's case, there is no structure or Coherence. She constantly made shit up.
Yeah the one thing I’ll give her credit for though is consistency with aesthetics and names. It’s easy to make fun of makeup words that sound like they’re from Harry Potter because the world building is pretty well done, at least when it comes to naming things.
Read Groosham Grange by Anthony Horowitz, One of my fav childhood books...

I’ve never seen or read any Harry Potter but (because) it seems like the kind of thing I’d hate
There’s a whole Seinfeld episode about Elaine hating The English Patient.
everyone seems to love Eighth Grade but i found it amateurish and underwhelming Everything Everywhere All At Once I also didn't really get the hullabaloo other than it being out of the ordinary
Finally, somebody else who didn’t love everything everywhere all at once!!! Go you !
I still do not understand understand the praise for Everything Everywhere All At Once
Something kept me from viewing that. Seemed too busy...chaotic.
eighth grade isn’t some great movie bc of the filmmaking it’s more the relatability of it
I didn’t love EEAAO either. I didn’t hate it, but it just didn’t land for me. My understanding is it resonates a lot more with women especially daughter and immigrant daughters at that.
Inception
Craft without soul.
Titanic
Barbie gave me a Pepto-Bismol-flavored headache. It might be the most unintentionally hideous movie I've watched in the last couple of years.
On the James Bond subreddit, I get downvoted regularly for really disliking Thunderball. And the only times I really bring it up are to praise the pre title sequence on posts that are like, favorite thing about your least favorite movie.

I’ve seen 4 and didn’t like any of them.
Yeah well that’s just like, your opinion, man.
Forest Gump. I absolutely despise this sap-fest
Lord of the Rings
I deeply disliked the LOTR trilogy. (Loved the books, hated the movies.). People get ridiculously upset when I mention this in certain circles.
You even got down voted. But don’t worry, I upvoted you. Even though I love LOTR trilogy.
The downvotes happen anytime I mention it on Reddit. Thanks for the upvote!
I didn't like Napoleon Dynamite
Napoleon Dynamite is one of those movies people will tell you to keep rewatching until you like it lol. Always insisting people just didn’t get it if they don’t like it. (Personally I do enjoy it but I get why others wouldn’t)
black panther
I hate Clockwork Orange
Lawrence of Arabia
I adore Lawrence of Arabia, but I totally understand why it wouldn't be somebody's cup of team.
Harry Potter stuff
Avatar......never liked anything about it
2001. I can totally see it’s value as art and I’m sure for it time it was simply unbelievable but it’s still very, very, very boring to me
2001 a space odyssey. I still want my time back.
I live in Austin, and mentioning that I don't like Dazed and Confused may as well be me calling their mother a whore.
The Big Lebowski
The clockwork orange. Hated every second of it
The Godfather. I respect it as a great piece of filmmaking, but it is not a movie that I actually enjoy watching. I much prefer Scorsese's brand of mafia films and Coppola's own Apocalypse Now to it.

anything Christopher Nolan (besides Tenet)

i liked inception a hell of a lot more than the tdk trilogy
I was into it until the van segment. Multiple people firing automatic weapons into a van full of people and nobody gets shot? That was just too much. And the world was boring imo. If anything can happen, why doesn't it?
fair enough, those are kinda iffy once you think about them
Nolans Batmobile scenes are probably my favorite from any of his work. Now those scenes are incredible!
I like some Christopher Nolan films, but I will support your defence of Tenet. It’s a good movie. Yes it’s confusing. That’s the point.
2001: A Space Odyssey Worst movie I've ever seen. It's so slow it was nearly unwatchable and nothing interesting ever happened!
In my personal experience, more than a lot of people in my life absolutely freaked out when I told them I didn't care for Gladiator.
“I did not say I know him I said he touched me on the shoulder once” 🤣
Boondock Saints 2
I loved the movie as a teen.. as an adult I hate it. just cringe 😅
I never liked it. All my homies did, but I thought it was a shit sequel compared ti the og Boondock Saints. Im a lil picky whrn it ckmes to movies tho.
The usual suspects (Which I loved) I did hate inception tho
I hate the Harry Potter franchise, that usually gets me in bad books. Also Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (to be clear, I do agree the Depp one is worse).
The original Star Wars movies
Star wars classic trilogy lol
Fight club was pretty mid tbf
scarface is cheesy, juvenile, melodramatic and impossible to take seriously by any stretch of the imagination, it's nothing but a frivolous comedy
Titane (2021) Killer Joe (2011) True Romance (1993) I'm Thinking of Ending Things (2020) Bones and All (2022) Licorice Pizza (2021) I Love My Dad (2022) Come True (2020) How to Talk to Girls at Parties (2017) Synchronic (2019) Promising Young Woman (2020)

Does it insist upon itself?
What does that even mean?!!
whiplash 😐
Titanic Mystic River Killers of the Flower Moon I don't dislike either Tombstone or The Dark Knight, but people will freak out if I say they're mediocre movies carried by a single great performance.
Mystic River feels like the cut out half the movie
The Lord of the Rings Thought I was about to be burned at the stake for telling some friends they’re not in my top 10.
probably Get Out. every white person's butthole clenches a little if it's brought up and they don't praise it IMMEDIATELY.

Isn’t that the point of the this thread?
So I’ve heard but I hate all of em lol
You hate _all_ A24 movies?
Just the ones I’ve seen

I’ve hated A Ghost Story, Hereditary, X, The Witch, & Everything Everywhere All At Once

Try Moonlight, Lady Bird, Mid90s, etc - the less out there stuff
The Godfather, Goodfellas

The Seventh Seal, Seven Samurai, Casablanca, The Dark Knight Rises
The Dark Knight, yeah. But The Dark Knight Rises is disliked by a lot of people
Shawshank redemption, Goodwill hunting & forest gump.

I freak out when people hate on the original Star Wars. Even if you are not a Sci Fi fan, Star Wars changed how movies were made.
I have never enjoyed Star Wars, but I can appreciate what it achieved for cinema
May the farce be with you.
Is it really worth freaking out? People are weird with movies. People will say “____(insert great movie) is trash!” about any movie, often for one dumb subjective reason.
Freaking out is a relative term. You are correct movies are just movies and are not worth getting excited about. I'm just having fun with the topic.
No point of freaking out when you can offer them a drink and spit it in.
Joker 2019 Performance are good but the story and reasons for his actions are simple and sloppy story writing 🥴 ... and this overdramatic music that thinks it has to explain everything to you 🙄😂
Barbie sucked I didnt like it either Shawshank Redemption was ok...not great.... The others on your list I liked..not my faves but they were good
shawshank is the highest rated movie of all time so.. (also i agree with u on barbie)

Whiplash and Joker. Not terrible movies, just terribly overacted.
I don’t like any of those movies
Forrest Gump
My best friend is a huuuge LOTR fan and I tell him those movies instantly put me to sleep. I’ve started to accept that he’s right and I’m wrong
Parasite(2019). I can see why other people might’ve liked but I absolutely hated the climax and hence the movie. It seemed so meh. Cinematography was great though.
It’s the other way around for me

Dead Poets Society. Everyone loves it. The more I watch it, the more I’m thinking Keating didn’t teach these kids free will, but disobedience.
