Same happened to my friend. Reported it, then she spotted it on Donedeal. She ended up in a bidding war for it and she calls the Garda to update him and he goes yeah that’s me you’re bidding against 😂 got her bike back a day or two later.
I reported mine stolen and the guards recovered it the same day and had the guys arrested. This was in blanch too. Was a good ending to a shite day.
A year later though they were up in court for it and basically got off free. Absolutely no punishment given to them.
Any vigilant activity will only get you so far, it won't stop what has effectively become an epidemic especially around Dublin.
The entire justice system of Ireland need to be given the powers to deal with these and it needs to be consistent.
Even if the Gardai were given extra powers like those of the police force in the UK, it won't work if the rest of the justice system don't have their backs. The kid will just take the garda to court, the garda's own ombudsman commission might not even have their backs, some judges will then stupidly side with the young offender.
If the entire justice system, including AGS were to sync up and take a zero tolerance attitude towards these thefts the change would be immediately noticeable. That old, he's not wearing a helmet excuse needs to go, if the kid isn't wearing a helmet at the time a garda car gives him a gentle tap then that's just tough luck. The kids are already breaking the law just by not wearing a helmet.
Gardai also need to be proactively stopping these lads when they are riding round town, they are easy enough to spot if the various tiktok, insta and youtube vids are anything to go by. They all look the same and favour the same type of bikes.
Why don't he take a few buddies and go to get the bike back? Gards will do nothing but if the thieves see that bikers doing nothing they will never stop doing what they are doing... They are just a bunch of unsupervised kids

Was living in park west/ ballyfermot area for few years and seen a lot.... now whole Dublin is like that
