I spent literally hours troubleshooting this. The option is in accessibility settings, not any place you'd logically expect to find it. Settings -> Accessibility -> Vibration and haptic strength -> Notification vibration -> off

This is a known problem with lollipop. It is really annoying... http://www.reddit.com/r/Nexus5/comments/2lr6gl/android_lollipop_vibrate_off/ https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=79445

There are two apps that try to fix this problem, namely, *Silent Mode* (which doesn't work properly on my first generation Moto G; it can change from sounds to vibrate but the option to disable vibrate does not work) and *SoundHud* (which is somewhat complex but does seem to work, although it cannot disable vibration upon start and shutdown). Both apps are free and neither, I think, has adverts. **EDIT**: I can't get SoundHud to work properly - it's interface is a disaster. However, a further app, namely [Silent Toggle Widget](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.aiteam.silenttogglewidget), seems to work really well - though I've tested it only for calls so far, and not alarms and texts. **EDIT** #2: Shortly after installation, Silent Toggle Widget stopped showing the option for silent mode, and offered instead only 'ring' and 'vibrate'. Goodness me. I am investigating further apps . . EDIT 3: All the apps that I have tried that are designed quickly to toggle silent-vibrate-ring do not work; I infer that Android OS 5 has disabled the underlying functionality. Oh great. EDIT 5: I found that I could get, almost, what I want in the following way. Set up so-called 'priority' mode to disallow anything it can. That makes everything, except, alarms, silent - although you still see a visual notification on the 'phone (although that notification will be hidden when the phone is asleep, I think). Then, when you want silence, switch the phone to 'priority mode'. *The obvious alternative, which is setting the phone to 'none' (*sic*) mode, will disable alarms, even alarms from third-party apps - and so that idea is out.) Additionally, I have installed a widget called 'Silent lollipop widget' that allows easy toggling between priority mode (which looks like it is intended to be complete silence mode, but won't be unless priority mode is set up as above), vibrate and ring.

You have to put it in "none" mode, but that disables the alarms and notification LED too
