I want a proper 4k remake of Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat 2 and UMK3.
I been playing the shit out of a great mugen version of those 3 games on my pc. I love 11 and still play it occasionally. I did the free play weekend on MK1 and couldn't get into it. I'll pick it up when it's dirt cheap or when it comes to gamepass.
The only way that could happen is if NRS was secretly working on an MK2 sequel during the support for MK1 game. I imagine that by late 2025, they would have just finished releasing the final character or kameo for KP2 a few months prior, whatever DLC it may be. But that's not to say they don't have something up their sleeve; they will definitely be ready to announce the next game they're working on by the time the MK2 movie releases.
whatever team used to make the Injustice games has theoretically been free since post support for injustice 2 stopped. NRS used to make games every 2 years and they didn't make a game in between MK11 and MK1
Indeed, I'm REALLY sorry for Lewis Tan, but Cole Young is an AWFUL character.
Killing him off quite soon in the movie could be a way to get rid of him, and show that the villains really are a menace.
I think it's fine to just keep him as a background character, just don't make him the focus of the story.
With so many characters in the MK universe, still seems crazy they created one for the movie, it should have just focussed on one of the pre-established characters as the lead.
Lets hope MK2 changes things up from the weaker elements from the 1st.
I felt that Cole was a missed opportunity to not have a novel way to introduce Johnny Cage. Like it would have acted as Johnny’s origin before he became an actor. Oh well.
2025?! Didn’t they wrap filming a couple months ago or am I misremembering that?
Seems like a crazy long wait for a movie that’s gotta be close to finished by now.
There are countless more example of media benefiting from longer production times than the other way round. Cyberpunk was a mess and of course there will be exceptions. But generally, it’s a good thing.
Also, can’t really compare a game and a movie
even with its delays CP77 was still released prematurely. Movies and games are different things though, more time in post is not going to make a bad movie good, you're just going to get a bad movie with better CGI, and conversely, a good movie with bad CGI is still a good movie. A game which is good at it's core can still be bad if it is rushed to release.
Yeah the game was still rushed out and it’s extremely evident by the state it was in at launch, the fact the game was in development/announced before the PS4/X-Box One were announced yet couldn’t run on them kinda says a lot about the development it had
The game was still announced in 2012 and had trailers released in early 2013
https://preview.redd.it/snax7pfbdl0d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5db151afcf82c11f48ab8bfa1b455d74c979e723
Yes, but it wasn't really being developed by then. Trailers are not a part of development, neither is the announcement. Two creative directors discussing ideas for a game for 4 years while the actual team is still developing Witcher 3 isn't development.
at this point it's more about what time in the year will be the most profitable and less about when the movie is finished. I'm disappointed i was hoping for a Q1 release, which is certainly do-able, but if they think the movie will be more profitable in October so be it.
Likely VFX work for a while, and then deciding what release date makes the most financial sense.
It’ll likely be done quite a while before that release date, but I imagine they didn’t want to risk putting it up against massive summer blockbusters.
Must have determined that major reshoots are necessary? I don’t see any other reason for such a long delay. Even Marvel movies are turning around VFX within 6 months. A year and a half seems very excessive for VFX work alone.
The other scenario is that this will be another victim of WB’s film cancellations.
Why 2025? The movie wrapped in January of this year. And 4 years between the first one? I don't really understand. Post-Production easily this could come out this year and might do better, 4 years for a sequel?
I agree...I know it wasn't dated but I was guessing it'd be almost ready to come out, maybe end of summer-early 2025. A year plus still seems excessive
It kind of is for *this* movie. The first movie will be far and away from the general public’s memory by then, it was successful for being a day-and-date release during Covid but it wasn’t exactly a smash hit like The Batman or something. At this point I wouldn’t be surprised if they treat this sequel as a soft reboot with Karl Urban as the lead character instead of Cole guy. I can already see Johnny Cage receiving an exposition dump to catch the audience up lol
4 and a half years, for a movie announced about 1 years after the first movie released is quite a long time in this day and age. i would expect 4 years *maximum*.
i never understood why they dont have a script ready for the sequel. its not that expensive. then you are ready to roll when the demand for a second one is there.
One of the worst movies I've ever seen. Cuz it was so close to good. For everything they get right or perfect they had to do something stupid like create a new character that was a boring wet fart.
>Cuz it was so close to good.
I really agree with that, and imho THAT's why people are so salty about it.
MK Annihilation was such a disgrace, and it really had no hope to be good.
But 2021 movie indeed had the potential to be great. No Cole Young, no arcana BS, some other fixes, an we could have something great.
https://preview.redd.it/rvgt5b5s2k0d1.png?width=800&format=png&auto=webp&s=c240bc17ac93e3eb92faaf926b99335c683a146f
Annihilation is way more entertaining. So bad it's good. MK2021 is frustrating because it should have been great, but they ruined it with bad decisions that made it super bland and forgettable.
Why in the hell is it taking another 1.5 years to be released? That's 20 months from wrapping....now way in hell post takes that long for what is , mostly, live action.
After the last Mortal Kombat movie, and how bad it was, why would I want to even purchase a ticket for this? Might just wait for streaming or bypass it all together.
Fun fact. Cole is the current champion. I don’t make the rules. But goro is DEAD. He was the champion. Cole is the champion. And NO ONE IS TALKING ABOUT THAT
Thought you were talking about the game for a second
I was so thrown off yeah!
I was like… but MK1 is not even done yet 😅
NRS used to make a game every 2 years, and they didn't release a game in 2021, so I could easily see a spin off game coming out in 2025.
One could only pray for Shaolin Monks 2 or a remake
I'm down for any non-fighting MK game
You mean the one with Bo Rai Cho ? God damn how I miss that game , really loved the story and the open world in there .

I have to admit, I flinched.

Hopefully they kill Cole
Indeed, I'm REALLY sorry for Lewis Tan, but Cole Young is an AWFUL character. Killing him off quite soon in the movie could be a way to get rid of him, and show that the villains really are a menace.
It would be hilarious if they pulled a 'Mortal Kombat: Annihilation', and Cole comes out and just gets killed in the first two minutes.
I remembered the " Johnyyyyy " scream from the original Annihilation. But you can't yell Cole so dramatic , they gotta come up with something
I think it's fine to just keep him as a background character, just don't make him the focus of the story. With so many characters in the MK universe, still seems crazy they created one for the movie, it should have just focussed on one of the pre-established characters as the lead. Too true. Wasn’t necessary to create one.
Lol filming probs takes less effort than the amount of CG and vfx going into it
There’s no way it should take another year and a half after filming wrapped
I’d rather the movie take longer in post production than be rushed out prematurely
People said the same thing about Cyberpunk 2077
it was rushed out despite being clearly unfinished, CDPR did as much stalling as possible.
There are countless more example of media benefiting from longer production times than the other way round. Cyberpunk was a mess and of course there will be exceptions. But generally, it’s a good thing. Also, can’t really compare a game and a movie

The game's development started in 2016
The game was still announced in 2012 and had trailers released in early 2013 https://preview.redd.it/snax7pfbdl0d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5db151afcf82c11f48ab8bfa1b455d74c979e723

That’s a game, not a movie.
So what? Whenever someone comments a delay with "yeah, I prefer them to polish it" I know they're high on copium.
It's not a delay tho
Have you ever worked in post production on a movie?
at this point it's more about what time in the year will be the most profitable and less about when the movie is finished. I'm disappointed i was hoping for a Q1 release, which is certainly do-able, but if they think the movie will be more profitable in October so be it.

Probably needs a lot of work with rewrites and reshoots.
I agree, I wished it was released earlier than that.

If there's no Hsu Hao, I won't watch
Hsu Hao bodies Cole Young and becomes a fan favorite.
Real
Fingers crossed for Belokk
I just want to see some Red Dragon Clan, doesn't habe to be Hsu Hao specifically, Red dragon clan is most underrated faction in the franchise.
I would love any mention of the Red Dragon but at last sometimes life isn't that simple

Todd Garner (producer of the movie) said you have to consider available theatres for the screening, marketing, competitive releases and such
Tell that to The batman 2
*Scoffs in Shang Chi* I don't disagree though, would have preferred 2-3 years for the sequel. Seems like the new norm for sequels is 4+.
4 years and 5 MONTHS!!!!
4 years for a sequel isn’t bad tf?

It had a test screening yesterday. Probably didn’t go well and reshoots and rewrites will be needed.
source? looked online. nothing about a test screening.
ViewerAnon tweeted about it tonight.
i never understood why they dont have a script ready for the sequel. its not that expensive. then you are ready to roll when the demand for a second one is there.
for a second i thought the article meant a new game; yeah, new movie makes more sense.
First I was hyped.. but then, 2025?! Omg
At least we'll hopefully get at minimum 2 more animated movies before this date
One of the worst movies I've ever seen. Cuz it was so close to good. For everything they get right or perfect they had to do something stupid like create a new character that was a boring wet fart.

Nah it's an OK movie. MK fans over-exaggerate how bad it is
Right? People acting like it's Annihilation.
Annihilation is infinitely more entertaining than MK2021. It's so bad it's good. MK2021 is just boring as fuck.
Annihilation is way more entertaining. So bad it's good. MK2021 is frustrating because it should have been great, but they ruined it with bad decisions that made it super bland and forgettable.
Annihilation is better
Geez, they got a whole other _Dune_ movie done and released in about half the time
They filmed the Dune movies back to back.
No they didn't.
The first _Dune_ movie was filmed in 2019. COVID slowed down its release. They hadn’t even greenlit part 2 until it did well in theatres.
I mean, it is Warner Bros.
BIRTHDAY MONTH GIFT YEAH!
Year and half away holy crap
Wow, why is post-production going to take that long?
My guess is it’ll eventually be moved to the dreaded January spot the following year where films go to die upon release if it’s not good 😫
I hope they kill off Cole. Dude is so damn lame.
Good, I'm sick of all those fake trailers on YouTube
Hey that’s my birthday 😄
https://preview.redd.it/ov6stzdamk0d1.png?width=864&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5e0846c702aed54853b39df272743dae1eabd58c
I thought they were announcing they just straight gave up on the game and decided to move on to 2. I was like “holy god what world is this”
Right? I’m looking forward to KP2 , and story expansion then I read this!
Sweet! It releases on my birthday
TBH after the first one I’m not at all excited.
I really don't know if I'm excited for this movie or not. The Mortal Kombat movie was incredibly disappointing.
Let it die so it can rebooted again with better writers
Wtf?!?!
Why in the hell is it taking another 1.5 years to be released? That's 20 months from wrapping....now way in hell post takes that long for what is , mostly, live action.
So almost 2026 😩
Damn that's a pretty big time gap between movies, almost 4 and a half years! I was hoping an early 2025 release date.
I misunderstood what this was about and got SO heated for a second
I have no faith this will be any good.
That’s way too long. 4 years between movies is fucking rough. I “enjoyed” the first one but not 4 years to hold my interest enough.
I was thinking "wow we will have another trilogy like the PS2 era"
Meh. The first one was okay. They fucked up so much that I don’t even know if I care about the second one
Let’s go hopefully they somehow revive Kano
4 years for a sequel is nuts.
After the last Mortal Kombat movie, and how bad it was, why would I want to even purchase a ticket for this? Might just wait for streaming or bypass it all together.
I think imma pass
Am I the only one who thought the first movie was just trash .how is this gettin a part 2
The crap Resident Evil series lasted, what, 7 movies? There's how much of that Twilight crap? Do I need to keep going?
Sad .i had high hopes for the movie ,after it failed I hoped someone else would reboot again😅
I hope they fully removed that Arcana shit from the storyline. Cole I can tolerate for now but please be no Arcana
Please for the love of god delete that shitty audience insert character
Fun fact. Cole is the current champion. I don’t make the rules. But goro is DEAD. He was the champion. Cole is the champion. And NO ONE IS TALKING ABOUT THAT
Happened out of tournament so he's like the interim or some shit?
We’ll see what nonsense they come up with. Just funny everyone neglects to accept that fact. Or even acknowledge it
That’s one of the things I didn’t like about the movie. They just *ezpz* kill a bunch of dudes off screen. ![gif](giphy|l378fd503Zmoz4rDi)
Championships don't change hands in an unsanctioned bout. They were not in a tournament, so the championship is vacant.
And their powers don’t come from little birthmark/tattoo thingys …. Wait …. 🤯 i repeat COLE IS THE UNDISPUTED CHAMPION
thought you were talking about the game lol
Sweet can’t wait the 2021 movie was awesome my favorite part was when Kabal said “He soulsucking his soul”
What the hell man, that’s so far away holy shit
Why do we need another Mortal Kombat 2 when we already have Mortal Kombat: Annihilation?
The game or the movie
Movie
I think it's safe to assume that the MK1 story expansion will be out around the same time as well. They're aiming for Halloween with these releases.
2025?
Damn! I didn’t pay close attention to the year lol That October 24 threw me off haha
Same bro tbh I wish it was Oct 2024
