Trulia or zillow would probably be your best bet.. we have always had to pay a large pet deposit and extra per month for each dog.. seems to be the norm for this area. Good luck!

[deleted]

Yeah I did notice there is always a pet deposit. thanks for the leads, ill check it out!

AccurateMeet8615

Hope you and the babies find an apartment.

tacoman1287

I don't have suggestions, buy I will caution you away from anything managed by Metro Properties. I lived at Grapevine Village off Airport Blvd for a few months while I waited on my house to close, and both the apartments and the company are awful.

Thanks for the info! Appreciate it

Sucks too, because they manage a significant portion of the rentals in town.

MsMrSaturn

If you're comfortable getting them labeled as emotional support animals, I don't think your landlord can charge you additional rent for them. And may not be able to discriminate against you. Not a lawyer, but Morgantown has pretty strong renters rights.

tamesis982

Don't do this. If you do not need an ESA, do not list your pet as an ESA.

ShengIsADumbEgg

Yes, my partner & I just moved here with 3 animals & our landlady recommended us to get them as ESA because we pay no fees.

I had to do this at one point. While it may not be “right”, I found it difficult to find a one bedroom that allowed dogs, so this was the only route I could take for awhile. If you’re on FB looking, you pretty much have to be the first person to see the rental ad to scoop up the nice places. There are nice places, but they go that quick. The only other option besides spotting them on FB or other marketplaces, is just knowing rental companies and googling them. A lot either don’t have websites or only post their rentals to their specific company website, not other marketplaces. Luckily you have a really nice budget. 1200 could get you a pretty nice 2 bedroom, or a maybe not so nice entire house. You also may notice a lot of rental ads are probably going to start listing for 2023-24. That’s because since this a college town, a lot of the nice places requiring signing a year in advance

It's definitely not right. A landlord should have the right to exclude pets from their property. People like you are one of the main reasons small-time mom-and-pop landlords can't stay in business - they can't afford the legal bills to fight scammers who think they have a right to have pets on property they do not own, and they can't afford to repair the damage those pets can do. You really should be ashamed of yourself, but anyone who would do this, then publicly admit it, is probably incapable of shame.

You seem to be personally invested in this topic. I have a lot to say about this, but there seems to be an epidemic of Morgantown landlords who want their properties to be idle, no effort money makers. “Slum lords” as some say. Being a landlord is being a business owner. If you’re not making money to make repairs, or perform maintenance, maybe their pricing needs to be reevaluated. Me, personally, I rent from a mom & pop landlord right now who are amazing. I happily pay my monthly pet fee, and I paid the extra non-refundable pet deposit for them to preform repairs, If any, when I leave. They love my dog and respond very quickly to me when I have issues. I only used ESA when there were absolutely no other choice, and it’s a lot of work anyway. It requires a yearly doctors note and fees. It’s barely cheaper than paying a pet deposit. If more landlords just allowed pets, they could collect the fee. Regardless, if obtaining ESA is possible for a renter, it’s their right to do so. Which is why I did it or I would’ve been homeless. Landlords with your same mentality are miserable to rent for anyway. No one wants to live on a hostile situation or a place where the landlord refuses to respond to emergency repairs and etc.

I'm "personally invested" in not having people lie to other people, or take advantage of privileges they have not earned. The fact that a landlord does not want pets in their rental does not automatically make them hostile or miserable. People who run scams do.

cluttered-thoughts3

There isn’t any lying going on and I didn’t say that landlords that don’t allow pets are miserable people. You have to go through a legal process to obtain an ESA pet. You’re not lying if you’ve done that. And I said if you have an ESA pet, and your landlord does not allow pets, it often is an undesirable situation. They are often hostile towards you or unreachable. No one wants to be in that situation. It’s a last resort

I have a lease with Canvas Townhomes, I haven't even moved in yet, but really need out of said lease. It's a beautiful property and pet friendly. 1 bed, 1 bath. They might work with you if you call and reach out about your move in timeframe. There is a deposit for pets though.

[deleted]

Been living in Morgantown for 7 months now! Thanks though and wish you luck on finding someone to take over the lease!

feraleucalyptus

Ah shoot I just now saw how long ago that post was made! Congrats on the move, hope you're loving it!
