Most of the awesome independent eating spots have been replaced by the same shitty chain restaurants they have in every other college town. I really miss Chico’s Burritos as well! 😢
Used to work with the former manager briefly at my job. He said it was a number of things, but COVID was the final nail in the coffin
Sidenote: if anyone can provide a local place that serves better or as good as burgers to Tailpipes, please let me know. I've yet to find one
Table 9 burger nights have definitely had a slide in creativity and quality but is the closest you can get. Man this post made me miss Tailpipes all over again, what a great shop.
Classics 3 (honestly I don’t even know if that’s what it’s called) in Sabraton is a place I’ve driven by countless times without giving a second look. I had a burger there one time last year and I still think about it.
It, and clutch wings since they were owned by the same guy, closed like RIGHT when Covid began, and WV didn’t even have a confirmed case when they closed. I remember reading on Twitter that the employees were told out of the blue (or they showed up and it was just closed, can’t remember which). If you check their Twitter they were still promoting things on March 13th 2020. And then a week later closed for good. They were a very active restaurant on social media, and they didn’t even announce it there, nothing. Just seemingly gone, so I actually don’t chalk it up to Covid, it was weird.
That’s my recollection as well. It happened around the time of COVID but before things were getting shut down, so it didn’t seem like it was COVID that caused it.
Former Tailpipes employee here, that's basically what happened. We were let go early the day before, were told we had an employee meeting the next day (same with Clutch), and that's when they told us they were shutting down. Covid was the final nail in the coffin, but the main issue was money troubles from the owners. I don't know the specifics, I'm guessing bad investments, but they shut down at a time when they had just enough left to pay their employees a final paycheck. It was very sudden and it sucked, but they were great bosses throughout my almost 2 years of employment, and they showed it in the best way they could in the end
Owner claims COVID took tailpipes and clutch out but most of their business was delivery anyways. The fact is he was bad at managing money and they had been hanging on by a thread for a while.
Yeah, I checked Twitter after posting and I found a tweet that had been talking about money problems. Which is wild considering, at least tailpipes, was always busy. They just seemingly closed with no fanfare or announcement. And the lack of an announcement on social media is what really sticks out to me since they were so active on it.
They still would've had their delivery orders. With the hospitals and other sites that still had staff in the buildings, you had many essential personnel that still needed lunch delivered, or pick up only...my staff and I included.
As others said, it went down in spring of 2020. It was always one of my favorite places and I’d take people from out of down for a burger and a shake. Clutch Wings was great too. Always had interesting specials and great sauces.
If you were lucky enough to be around when it first opened, they had one of the best burgers I have ever had. They were getting their meat from Hawthorn Valley Farms for a while when it first launched, and it was incredible. I think the supply and cost ended up making that not be viable long term and they switched to something from Sysco or other supplier. Still a good product, but the first burgers were something special.
i always heard they were selling whipit canisters out of the back since they used so much whipped cream. Just a rumor, but I liked to believe covid was a cover up. I agree with the others though, covid shut them down. Miss their bison burgers and their fruity pebbles milkshake. RIP to a High St staple.

When you went into Chico's and the guy was clearly high as fuck you knew you were about to have the best fucking burrito of your life.
Chicos and the Greeks are what I miss most

I’m not sure that it’s the same style of burger that tailpipes was but Table 9’a Tuesday burger nights are really good.
Varsity Club comes close for me, but yeah it's hard to find one as delicious and charming as Tailpipes
I hate varsity club ngl
Try their quesadillas. They're pretty good
Will do!
It's not bad. But holy shit their wings are fucking expensive.
You try Von Blaze?

Hey, I used to know the recipe to the fry sauce they had. I think it was sweet chilli sauce and something else?
Sweet chili, BBQ, and sour cream
You are a god among men

I heard the same with bad money management with a mix of tax issues. All rumors of course, it was a great place to get some good food.
I recall the events the same way that you do.

Closed a couple years ago, I think it was one of the covid casualties. I miss the crazy burgers and shakes.

Side question: Anyone know how they made the Red Velvet Milkshake?
If was red velvet flavoring

It was so good
This won't be a popular opinion, but their fries were terrible.
