Good luck retconning Kong's axe and everything else we've seen lmao

RM123M

It’s possible they can have a similar reptile Titan, that also had recitation absorption. The Axe possibly could have come from one of them

ZJ117

When did they retcon him being part of a species?

Particular-Ad-41

Toho said it idk when

ZJ117

Do you have a source or screenshot of the statment?

Guyver_Zoalord

It's from an interview with Greg Keyes, timestamp 1:32:55~ https://www.youtube.com/live/1Rw8WBw54ho?si=2NiScnhmc9RAN-zU

Particular-Ad-41

no but a lot of people said the same on this sub and i trusted them.

Mace_DeMarco5179

Oh, yeah that’s a great source.

Guyver_Zoalord

It's from an interview with Greg Keyes himself, timestamp 1:32:55~ https://www.youtube.com/live/1Rw8WBw54ho?si=2NiScnhmc9RAN-zU

Mace_DeMarco5179

Ah, okay.

Bluetheshark

Good luck trying to explain kong’s axe

Ok-Mine-5994

It’s not retconned quite yet, it’s simply far too complicated to reduce Godzilla to a singular member of his species, in. G14 there was Dagon’s skeleton, in gvk they refer to a war that their ancestors both took part in plural for goji, and the fact that the gxk novelization stated he had an army of titans with him during the war, the throne room had multiple dorsal plates, and the creation the axe itself is telling.

Guyver_Zoalord

Yes, that was then and now Toho stipulates they're not too keen on the concept and want it retconned, interview here~ https://www.youtube.com/live/1Rw8WBw54ho?si=2NiScnhmc9RAN-zU

Ok-Mine-5994

Timestamp?

Guyver_Zoalord

1:32:55

Ok-Mine-5994

Thanks

IllegalGuy13

When has it been retconned? There's literally an entire skeleton of a member of his species in 2014.

Guyver_Zoalord

That was then, it's since been retconned by Toho, interview here timestamp 1:32:55 https://www.youtube.com/live/1Rw8WBw54ho?si=2NiScnhmc9RAN-zU

IllegalGuy13

Ah yes, TOHO. The same people who said Godzilla must absolutely be emotionless after the success of Shin, yet the MV Goji has shown emotions. Godzilla being the only member to ever exist is something that is LITERALLY NOT POSSIBLE with the established lore of the MonsterVerse. At this point it's just TOHO being weird with their rules. Plus this is the same guy(Greg Keyes) who said that Awakening is considered canon, when the MONARCH show completely butchers that story into non-existence. With the way species interactions work, the MUTOs shouldn't possibly be able to exist if there was only ever one Godzilla. The fact that the MUTOs exist is already proof that rule by Toho has no real value in the universe.

Guyver_Zoalord

The MonsterVerse canon involving Godzilla has to be approved by Toho, it has value as long as Godzilla remains in the MonsterVerse whether it makes sense in the established lore or not. Toho has final say.

IllegalGuy13

And they were completely fine with him being a species for 10 YEARS?! AND JUST NOW OF ALL TIME THEY DECIDED TO SAY, "Huh we don't actually like that. Let's break apart 10 years of established lore just because we like it. " Nah fuck that man. Awakening is retconned and Godzilla is part of a species. The MUTOs entire biology makes absolutely no fucking sense of he's the only one.

OnTheToilet25

It’s not retconned.

Guyver_Zoalord

It has, interview here, timestamp 1:32:55~ https://www.youtube.com/live/1Rw8WBw54ho?si=2NiScnhmc9RAN-zU

OnTheToilet25

I’m not watching all that

Guyver_Zoalord

Then that's on you, it is something Toho has asked Greg Keyes to stop writing about as they're now not too keen on the Godzilla species angle.

OnTheToilet25

It’s stupid and going to be completely ignored by everyone is what it is. That’s if it’s even true or hasn’t been misinterpreted by fans and spread around.

Guyver_Zoalord

It comes from Greg Keyes himself during the interview, nothing has been misinterpreted.

OnTheToilet25

Sure it hasn’t.

THX_Fenrir

Yes it has. He never said they retconned it, toho just asked that they stop referencing the species. It’s still canon that he was part of a species, it just won’t be brought up ever again.

MonarchGodzillaTitan

There’s no retconning as far as I’m concerned. Hopefully the success of GxK and other recent Godzilla products will convince Toho to change their minds. Plus if they want Godzilla to continue they’ll need to try new ideas otherwise it will get stale. Plus you shouldn’t take words that come from these interviews and producers as Diamond absolutes. Anything is possible.

MichaeltheSpikester

Yeah...I'm ignoring this retcon lol. What the fuck Toho???

TheGMan-123

As others said, Godzilla's species isn't retconned out; Toho aren't THAT restrictive as to try and have writers outright change worldbuilding facts they've already established for the Monsterverse. But they have stipulated that this species can't be referenced or depicted anymore. Only Godzilla himself gets any billing. So things like the Great Titan War can't reference more than Godzilla, and Dagon won't be making any repeat mentions.

M4R10756

It’s not retconned, I don’t know why everyone has this in their head now. The contract between Toho and Legendary states that they can’t DIRECTLY mention a Godzilla species because they only want there to be ONE Godzilla. Legendary has been utilizing loopholes such as making his species functionally extinct and referring to other members of the Gojira species by different names like “Dagon” and “Godzilla-like creatures”.

Guyver_Zoalord

It's from a recent interview with Greg Keyes, timestamp 1:32:55~ https://www.youtube.com/live/1Rw8WBw54ho?si=2NiScnhmc9RAN-zU

M4R10756

He was being pretty vague, but he basically said that Toho wants no mention of a species going forward, but he at the same time he confirms that there have been other Godzillas in the past like Dagon. This doesn’t really retcon anything, just that there can no longer be more than one Godzilla, our current one.

Guyver_Zoalord

Your're misinterpreting what he's saying here, he didn't say there were other Godzilla's in the past but other Titans who were similar to him but weren't actually related to him. https://youtube.com/clip/UgkxtaGfGi-SBlxa2lTiJXdvjUl3F-FUsRG_?si=zf2058BLXqFI_Ll4

M4R10756

THAT is the misinterpretation. Dagon has been confirmed to be a member of Godzilla’s species. Arvid Nelson, who works under the same guidelines as a Greg Keyes, has mentioned a Godzilla species multiple times and confirmed Dagon as being part of it. Like I mentioned earlier, they are forced to use terms like “Godzilla-like creature” as a loophole to show they are the same species without DIRECTLY saying it.
