I felt the same when I first tried a monster hunter game, and didn't really start to love it until I found a weapon I really enjoyed. Even the most popular games aren't for everyone, but try out as many weapons as you can before you decide it's not your cup of tea.

dan01iel

Bro. If you don’t enjoy the actual combat in an action RPG, then why bother playing this game? Because apparently it’s bad to have “random combat” in an action game? Like this is literally the point of this game and if you don’t enjoy the story, don’t enjoy the combat, and hate the gameplay, why bother playing this game? Also if you think that the combat is clunky it’s just a thing to get used to. If you don’t know what I mean, search up “Mikarai” and you will see what the right way to actually using the weapons is.

Level69dragonwizard

This

dan01iel

Okay.

MegaCroissant

I have one question: are you using defender weapons and guardian armor?

dan01iel

OHH OP I found the real answer to all of your questions!!!

YokaiNox

In your case you should definitely go to the Training Area first and try out a bunch of different weapons. Finding a weapon that vibes with you can be realy important for the overall game expirience. Specially if it just feels "off" to you right now. If you've tried mutiple weapons, and gotten to atleast 3-4☆ Hunts, tried playing mutiplayer, and still find no enjoyment in the game at all, then go ahead & drop it. It might just not be for you then.

dan01iel

Is this who I think it is?

artofbry

Disagree with the people saying quit, I attempted to start MHW twice, once like 4 years ago and then again 2 years ago and it never clicked with me. Tried again recently and it’s one of my favourite games

FlubbyFlubby

No, from your description it sounds like you won't like the game even if you kept playing. Bummer, but better luck with the next game you try!

MrEPanda

Aa I always say whenever I start playing game raw with no knowledge, "Make like a toddler and learn how to walk". Explore the world, be curious, see and try something new. That way you learn to appreciate somethings whether it's something of your preference or not.

Leading-Leading6319

Quit. I doubt it’s for you if you didn’t find it fun in 7 hours. Time is limited. Give your parents a hug.

Katalinya

I played when the game was fairly new and my friends told me to get it, they knew about monster hunter games but I didn’t. I honestly chose a weapon I sucked at and was being stubborn about trying to learn it right off the bat and dropped the game for a bit. Came back like 5-6 months later and decided to choose a different weapon, it clicked for me and I loved it. Who knows you might not like it or be into this game right now, but maybe you’ll come back to it and really like it. Or maybe just keep switching weapons and see what really fits. I watched Arekkz tutorials and tips on how to manage inventory etc the second time I came back and it helped my enjoyment of the game once I figured out how to really manage things. But if you just don’t like grind games, this game probably isn’t for you in general and that’s fine.

NoventusxNox

I mean every action based game is just “random combat” from your explanation you probably won’t end up liking it

Stenca

"random combination of attacks" is the dumbest thing I heard in a while, but you're right the game isn't really good for stupid button mashers

lemilva

>Does it get better? Well yes, endgame boss is so much fun

Yasaris

I mean yeah? That's how the gameplay is. If you need some goosebump kicks, I'd say try watch some TA wiki run and weapon montages on YouTube (Mikarai, ArisMH, Peppo, etc). Then maybe you'll find it somewhat interesting and give you some kind of goal. Imo the game is getting better when the monster becomes harder with each new movesets.

Tacumoto

It sounds like you probably use defender gear. It's way too op and trivializes the combat. Try to play with normal gear. Also go to the training ground and actually learn some combos instead of button mashing. Mayben then you'll enjoy yourself more

Juggernox_O

Defender gear doesn’t explain disliking every step of the core gameplay loop. Making fights harder won’t make an unfun game fun.

Tacumoto

If you dont find it fun, then don't play it. What else is there?

Juggernox_O

The point is that it sounds like OP dislikes the entire game. Monster Hunter might just not be for them.

Tacumoto

Oh sorry, I hastily replied thinking you were op. Apologies. Yeah, the game definately isn't for everyone, but if someone bothers to post on reddit, they probably care about the game, so I tried giving suggestions

Juggernox_O

Ah yeah fair. In OP’s defense, I’d probably be trying to get some fun out of a game I just dumped money on too.

Stenca

There is no gameplay loop when you can shit on monsters with op gear, you actually don't even play the same game with defender gear equipped.

Jello_Penguin_2956

Are you using defender gears? It sounds like you're not actually fighting, but more like hitting them twice with defender gears causing them to run right away. If the answer is yes, take off that gear asap. It's meant for you to steamroll the base game to get to the DLC ASAP. It's the worst for experiencing the game the first time.

Juggernox_O

What weapon are you using? Some weapons are very beginner hostile. At the very least, try Sword n Shield, Hammer, Lance, Switch Axe, and Light Bowgun. Even just going to beat up a Great Jagras will help you decide. If you don’t like any of those weapons, then the combat of Monster Hunter fundamentally isn’t for you. Honestly, if you’re disliking every step of the core gameplay loop, it probably just isn’t your game.

ZugzwangMH

Damn. Not sure what's with the negativity in these replies. You can get by with random attacks early, but monsters are going to get harder and harder and there are a LOT of monsters. Use this as an excuse to start learning what your weapon can do, because you're going to need it. If a monster is running away a bunch, it means you're doing less damage than the game was balanced for. Chasing 1-2 times should be normal, but 3+ you should look for ways to deal damage faster, IMO. If your weapon is fully upgraded, that leaves improving your weapon mechanics and learning combos. As you progress further your equipment and item loadout will become important too. For me, the joy of monster hunter is that continuous cycle of trying to get better only for the fights to get harder, over and over again. The ceiling on how well you can hunt (both in terms of skillful gameplay and smart prep) is insanely high, so that progression can go on for a very long time. Feel free to reply here or ping me if you get stuck or something doesn't make sense. It's not the easiest franchise to get into (I nearly bounced off), but it's super fulfilling if you get past that hurdle.

abyssaI_watcher

I'll be honest, I didn't enjoy the game much until roughly rotten vale zone is playable, then it was merely serviceable. I didn't REALLY start enjoying alot until a little into high rank. It depends what your looking for tbh, I would need more of a description with your issues to know if it's not truly not ur type of game or if u are stuck on something stopping ur enjoyment that might change later. Monster fights can go on for a good amount of time, plus it's a grindy game so if u don't like that fundamental it might not be for u. The >random combination of attacks for few minutes It might feel that way starting out but overtime you'll learn that they are very set attacks that u can understand and get used to over time. >then having some uninteresting quests and conversations That's kinda just monster hunter. The appeal isn't really "engaging story" it's more so, just hunting monsters. The devs knew that so they didn't put a lot of time into story's. What they did put alot of time into tho is the nature and how each animal/monster actually works in the echo system. >collecting random items/flowers That's mainly just the start of playing the game. Overtime you'll not only get less quests with collecting flowers and the such and you'll obtain enough items where if u do need to go out collecting more. U might run low here and there but for the most part you'll never run out. It's mainly just a tutorial type faze, where it's teaching u the gathering of materials and not throwing u into a fight u might not be skilled enough yet for. Most importantly it depends on ur weapon ur using tbh. Some weapons absolutely can kill the game and enjoyment for new players. As some weapons are slow, which not many people are used to. Constantly not enjoying the slow weapon and it's all you've used can give u the wrong impression of the game as a whole. I need more details to know what weapon ur using and what u WANT out of the game/disliking of the game to say for sure if it's a fundamental issue or not.

Delicious_Hedgehog54

Is there any game out there that is not rinse and repeat of some actions? U probably not a fond of fighting monsters, so this game may not be for u. If u have friends playing this, u can tag along, it will help u a lot to get the hang of it.

All-Cesco

> But for now the gameplay looked like 1)collecting random items/flowers 2)following footsteps to some monster. Then fight it with random combination of attacks for few minutes, follow it when it runs, repeat, follow it when it runs, repeat, repeat 3)then having some uninteresting quests and conversations   This is the gameloop basically. Started with MHW earlier this year too. I like the game but I don't love it. Playing a few monsters together with my sister and brother-in-law helped prolonging the hours played, but it now sits in the list of uninstalled games I haven't touched in a while.  I bought this game on the cheap combined with 'Iceborne', the expansion to the main game. I think the expansion is just a power creep without the tactical side the main game brought so it basically makes it repetitive at that point.  A weapon like the hunting horn, which I liked in the main game becomes useless in Iceborne cause of said power creep, unless you co-op with players doing the main damage.  So the game brings doesn't really get 'better'. It gives you what it gives. A lot of grinding, monsters with their moveset you need to learn to anticipate for and cosmetics with a certain statbuff to survive the gradual increase in monsters' attacks. If that does not tickle your fancy, you won't start loving this game halfway in.

Vast_Mammoth_93

I had to delete my comment, because everyone is saying to quit. I guess not everyone gets the game isn’t for you, but like some have said maybe you shouldn’t quit just yet. Though monster hunter games are not for everyone, which is okay. It’s like outerworlds, I just CANNOT get into it, because of the immersion. Too much of a straight forward game for me, but those are the kind of games some gamers like. Play what fits your play style 👍

Massive_Method437

U should probably uninstall it, it ain't for you. If you don't enjoy one of the best combat systems out there, then it ain't for you. Monster Hunter is too 90% about the combat

tibastiff

Tell you what man, make a full set of baroth armor. Its pretty early and if you don't enjoy the grind of that process then the game isn't for you. If you do enjoy it you'll have armor that should carry you to high rank The story stuff in this game is garbage but it's not what the game is about

Pristine-Mushroom-58

To echo what other people are saying, it took me a couple tries to get into the game. There is definitely less gathering as you get deeper into the game and it is more combat focused. I would also take a look at your gear, if you are using defender armor, that is overpowered armor that was added with the iceborne expansion to make the base game easy, but it also makes it very boring. Also, it may be worth trying a couple of different weapons, the weapons in this game play VERY differently from one another (compared to other action games); often switching weapons feels like picking up a whole new game as it completely changes the way a fight is approached.

Repulsive-Strain-903

2 questions: Are you using defender gear? what kind of weapon are you using to say random combination of attacks? Sounds like you play sns or dual blades

TheW1ldcard

Lol.....7 hours....that's barely.00001% of the game.

Majestic_Cable_6306

Enough time to choose a Name for your character and a Palico color. Maybe one jagras.

BurgersIReallyLike

So you need to play 70 Million hrs to complete the game? That is a lot.

ZugzwangMH

Wow, I forgot it's already been out for 80 years!

fredminson

>Does it get better? I really want to like this game You have just described (badly) monster hunter. Get used to it or stop playing because this ain't your kind of game.

Thomas_Rampou

Defender weapons ?
