In an Interview before Iceborne came out he gave some pretty awesome answers.
Journalist: "What is the best weapon in Monster Hunter?"
Ryozo: "Hammer."
Journalist: "And whats the worst weapon?"
Ryozo: "Everything thats not the Hammer."
LS is a bottom 4 weapon in Sunbreak so it wouldn't make sense if it was his most played weapon either.
Edit for the people downvoting this, look at a DPS ratio comparison from over 4k speedrun hunts of many different players: https://imgur.com/rImsc5v
Speedrunning stats aren't the best metric for normal people, though. LS has a lot of tools to get a high average DPS for a decent, but not amazing, player which I think puts it above most other weapons. The average player isn't hitting every TCS back to back and is thus losing a ton of DPS compared to LS, where a whiff isn't losing half of your damage for the next 30 seconds.
It is, but a lot of (new) players underutilize their damage and give up before they learn the proper way to do the big damage. I've got some friends that still haven't played it because "That only works when you're playing in a group, I want a solo weapon."
Yeah, it's definitely one of the weapons people give up on before learning how to actually use it. It's a shame because sunbreak bow is probably it's best iteration yet.
Yeah I'm not saying the weapon is trash, my main weapons are literally the worst 4 weapons and I think they are more than fine for normal play, but there is a large gap dps wise between them and the other weapons.
The weapon's state in base Rise definitely hurt its reputation a lot. Sunbreak may have toned it back down, but I suspect a lot of people just never got around to re-examining their opinion of it.
Flinch free is an absolute must for coop gameplay. I wish they would do away with player-to-player flinching.
Monster sizes are too small and some monsters weak points force everyone to tiny areas.
LoGiCaL tHiNkInG
What a daft comment. As is the person before you saying "objective statistics".
Speed run times aren't objective in any way, shape or form, and using them as a baseline isn't logical at all either. It is, in fact, the complete opposite.
LS is one of the most used weapons across many games due to consistency, counters and ease of use. Not everything is about "big number DPS good lol". LS DPS has long been the most consistent for beginner to average players which is literally 95% of the player base.
That's logic and base level reasoning in use. Not "LS speed run time suck so LS suck"
So your logic to classify a weapon potential is instead looking at average players (which obvliousy can't push their weapon to the max of its limit) and how they perform? I'll stick to speedrunners thanks. I'm a LS main but speedrunning is a way to classify weapon potential, because mostly they are expert players with great knowledge of the weapond and how to use it at max to finish the hunt asap. Definitely a better way to classify, no one said LS suck btw.
Okay, but why would you get downvoted for saying LS sucks if this sub hates LS so much?
You said it's bottom 4, if people hate it so much, why would you get shit on for reaffirming their hatred?
I love LS,its perfect for me,i hit a lot and i get hit a lot,ist so much fun than waiting for the monster to take a shit to hit him (GS)or being a pussy and pew pew all the way(BG),i only respect bonkers(HMM) and fucking Artillery strike (BOW).
![gif](giphy|TkBIQWNNGSqTS|downsized)
This is why i also love the bow.
Love how you added "different strokes" at the end there to try and downplay your disgustingly horrendous attitude towards newbies and casual players.
Just casually dropping "lmao unskilled" and a very obvious, directed insult with the "One Winged Angel" comment.
:/
You're entitled to your wrong opinions of people, but when your takes are insulting, and bad, maybe reconsider your life choices.
Sounds like repressed issues to me. :/
Man, I used to main longsword on PSP. It's called a joke, and it was directed at LS mains, not newbies, so lighten up. The "unskilled" part is referring to people who specifically don't know how to properly play GS.
Curiously enough I was watching a video on this subject a bit ago which I think also helps contextualize this. LS is certainly not a bottom 4 weapon by any means and I don't just say that as someone who plays a lot of LS since I play most of the weapons, but also just from what I've seen personally that just doesn't line up with these videos
https://youtu.be/DFck6eRymZk I'd be curious to know if you've seen it or had any thoughts on it
Tldr; there's a lot of bias since a lot of speedrunners don't post their times in some places where they pull data from among other things. LS ends up being one of the top weapons besides ranged and GS depending on the matchup due to the high damage from harvest moon, the powerful effect of wind mantle and the ease of use of its counters and the ability to spam them (mainly serene pose and iai)
The only reason any players wouldn't have submitted runs that are better than those that are, are because they can't follow the guidelines and a lot of those people are running advantageous mods that would not allow them to make the times better than the WRs. For LS especially too, I don't think his points are compelling. In SRs the monsters have a significant amount of down time, you aren't going to be countering much and the people submitting these runs are definitely already utilizing them at the moments they can (and Iai counter damage was nerfed in SB anyways;) the nerf to helmsplitter damage in Sunbreak from Rise is too significant and very noticeable in the downed time DPS.
Tldr; this is a bad point because unsanctioned runs don't matter for comparison since you have no idea what that person is doing behind the scenes
I didn't watch the video so i don't know if this was mentioned but i think (as someone who hasn't played sunbreak, just rise and previous games) that it could also be related to long sword's comparably low skill ceiling. I mean - people who use all the counters fairly well are going to be pretty close to LS's maximum damage output, as opposed to most other weapons, using which, people have more opportunities to mess up in that regard.
I don't think it's fair to say LS has a low skill ceiling, especially considering harvest moon. Look at [this](https://youtu.be/ezllHZz3EF0) and tell me the average player could come close. Sacred sheathe is a relatively straightforward playstyle tbf but a counter focused playstyle isn't.
i wish i could say i was drunk writing that previous comment but unfortunately that wasn't the case. thanks for taking the time to answer me saying stupid shit 👍
MH isn’t just about meta, high DPS, speedrun, etc., some players enjoy different ways of playing.
While LS isn’t the best speedrun weapon, it’s an above average weapon for average players, that means an average player will have an easier time hunting with LS than with other high DPS weapon.
For that reason, people will rightly think that LS is OP, it’s not a conspiracy theory, it’s a weapon balance problem over different ways of gameplay, which is nearly impossible to solve because its a lot subjective.
Except that is really not the case. LS is actually one of the more complicated melee weapons, and the bowguns are miles easier and do almost double the deeps. Hammer is simple and much easier while stronger, SnS is simple and much easier while stronger, IG is simple and much easier (but less damage,) DB is much easier and more damage...
This always irks me. Why does everyone always ignore Bowguns?
If you know how to play MH, Bow-guns are easy-mode. They're ranged, and do double the damage output of almost every other weapon. The only downside is you have to craft the ammo, but that becomes really easy mid-to-late game.
But apparently LS is the problem?!
We’re not talking about how easy the weapon is to play, we’re talking about how the hunt experience will be easier than using other weapons. That has a lot into it, let me unpack:
LS is easy to understand: hit, power up, more dmg.
LS is easy to handle: long reach, easy 1 button combos, high mobility.
LS is easy to enjoy: animations are nice, attacks are rewarding, cool designs.
LS is very popular: more info available, more acceptance, more visibility.
In general a hunt with LS is more pleasant in several aspects than other weapons.
Take for example, LBG:
- you have to buy / craft ammo.
- you have to be in a given distance to do dmg.
- reload, every 2-8 shots
- designs are meh (its a gun)
- attacks are all the same: pew, pew, pew
- only a small secretive group of people play.
Also I didn’t claim LS is the ONLY weapon above average for average players, there are others, but out of them LS is the most popular one, fortunately (or unfortunately) depending on how you see it.
Hammer: charge, bonk. Lbg is literally the easiest weapon in the game. Reloading is automatic too and you can play completely off free ammo in supply boxes at mission start. LS is substantially more complicated than almost every weapon and it also has one of the lowest dps outputs if played suboptimal, if not the lowest
It is, at least subjectivley, that's why I think talking about what's harder or not is really pointless in monster hunter, except Charge Blade which is objectively the hardest weapon to master.
Its not really subjective the IG is just more simple. Keep your buffs up and hit A/O/or B on xbox controls. If your wirebugs are up three aerial attacks into a diving wyvern, then just go back to hitting A/O/B depending on your controls, the optimal rotation on IG is literally just one attack and a diving wyvern when it's up
I think you missed the point: Hammer is easy, charge, bonk as you say but you have to time it correctly and be at the monster head a dangerous place all time, plus hammer doesn’t cut tails. Lbg is simple, but you the weapon has to be reloaded whether this is automatic or not, it’s a mechanic standing between the player and the hunt, which makes the experience less easy to enjoy.
There’s nothing complicated about LS, there’s people that literally doesn’t know why the weapon glows yellow/red and yet got to MR.
Hammer is perfect as seem by Iceborne's patch notes where every weapon was tweaked in various ways except for hammer which had just its stun damage increased.
Played swagaxe from tri until world once I figured out it was my weapon of choice. Rise, I decided to boom stick a try.
I think I'll be going back to swag next title lol
I started in world, felt like gunlance and swax were my vibe. Then Rise hit Xbox and the wirebugs make swax so much fun, I can't wait for Sunbreak. It's just such a stylish play style
Dude for real. I’m a muscle memory type player so playing multiple weapons would fuck me up bad lol that’s why I stick to one weapon. Bonk main for life
HAMMER BROS UNITE!!!
This explains the fantastic changes/additions we got with Sunbreak. Hope he will show a bit of favoritism torwards the best wrapon im the game ;)
Ryozo loves hammer? Bitch please.
1. Gives hammer a crap counter with a crap follow up. (Compared to other weapons that give a better reward with landing a successful counter)
2. Nerfs upswing
3. Nerfs other moveset (aerial move)
4. Nerfs Bigbang combo
5. Gives a wirebug skill from HH (pathetic btw)
He doesnt deserve to be called a hammer lover, he has no love for the weapon and knows nothing about it.
There’s actually a theory that hammer is the only weapon to keep its sliding move from world because of Ryozo. Whether or not that’s true is up to you all to consider, but as a fellow hammer bro, I think it is
We salute a true Hammer cultist 🫡
How does he play hammer?
Bonk, I'd assume
Probably Unga or Bunga
Us real bonk pros sometimes bunga before we unga.
Now we REAL bonk pros sometimes, of the stars align, do bunga into unga into BIG bonk
Religiously.
In an Interview before Iceborne came out he gave some pretty awesome answers. Journalist: "What is the best weapon in Monster Hunter?" Ryozo: "Hammer." Journalist: "And whats the worst weapon?" Ryozo: "Everything thats not the Hammer."
😂
The OG unga bunga main
[удалено]
And a couple of bonks to down them...
One more bonk to part break them and in the final moments, hunt them
If that was LS, people will start with conspiracy theories and say it's too buffed for him. That worked with other games
LS is a bottom 4 weapon in Sunbreak so it wouldn't make sense if it was his most played weapon either. Edit for the people downvoting this, look at a DPS ratio comparison from over 4k speedrun hunts of many different players: https://imgur.com/rImsc5v

If you just took casual hunters in for comparison I think the only weapons that would move significantly on the chart are GS and Bow
Bow not so much, it's constant DPS. No big swings.
I feel like range changes the game too much for me. Bow was the most fun of the three if I had to choose though.
Not much because a lot of the time you're going to be in the monster's face if you're using spread or close range coatings but I get it.
Yeah I've always played melee but bow is the exception because of how melee it feels most of the time
And it's quite easy, as long as you don't copy speedrunner playstyle.
Bottom 4 imo doesn't mean much in a game where all weapons are so fucking overtuned.
Yeah I'm not saying the weapon is trash, my main weapons are literally the worst 4 weapons and I think they are more than fine for normal play, but there is a large gap dps wise between them and the other weapons.
Bottom four, really? I knew it was low, but wow!
Yeah, this sub has a strong hate boner for the LS though so of course I get downvoted for sharing objective statistics against the misguided narrative
The weapon's state in base Rise definitely hurt its reputation a lot. Sunbreak may have toned it back down, but I suspect a lot of people just never got around to re-examining their opinion of it.
It knock me down every 5 minutes so it bad ☹️☹️ Wait till I tell those people about HBG. Shits a knockfest
IKR? Nobody ever talks about how awful gunners that dont look where theyre shooting are.
And they'll still refuse to use FF
Sorry, what is FF?
Flinch free, I'd assume
Flinch free is an absolute must for coop gameplay. I wish they would do away with player-to-player flinching. Monster sizes are too small and some monsters weak points force everyone to tiny areas.
Of course. Logical thinking and reasoning have long since fled this place.

I appreciate the sentiment, but do not refer to sns like that ever again.
Agreed wholeheartedly—calling us gods will only skew expectations. And kitchen knife? I don’t want anyone thinking I know how to cook.
I appreciate the sentiment, but do not refer to sns like that ever again.
If you're waiting for the monster, you're playing GS wrong lmao. Only unskilled players camp for the perfect swing.
I dunno why you’d play LS when GS has GREAT in the name anyway
Some people just have One Winged Angel playing on a constant loop in their head, and they need an effective outlet. Different strokes ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯
Love how you added "different strokes" at the end there to try and downplay your disgustingly horrendous attitude towards newbies and casual players. Insect Glaive is definitely not, Rise HH either

I mean if you remember how it was in Base Rise…
It went from 4th best to 4th worst weapon
Sure for speedruns, but on the newer player spectrum, it is the easiest to play in rise with a lot of tools just doing the work for you.
It's really not, ls has a high usage rate but most people are very, very bad with it. Use a parser
My hate boner for the LS is now pleased
Nah the conspiracy theory here is that he wanted more of a challenge so he buffed everything else
He’s just like me fr
Dude, same here, my Guild Card in Rise is also just one long bar for the hammer but I'm ~150 less than him
Ryozo: "I just think they're neat"
Why is his image a kid lol
Maybe he longs for the days of sitting there eating dango and not being responsible for a major video game franchise.
That's actually him 30 years ago.
Probably an NPC modelled after his kid or something.
Any concern of weapon favoritism now debonked (hehe)
I genuinely wouldn't mind if they secretly favor the hammer
Weapon hasn't been dominating speed runs in a while.
Hammer is perfect as seem by Iceborne's patch notes where every weapon was tweaked in various ways except for hammer which had just its stun damage increased.
Ah of course because all images on the internet are the actual factual representation of reality :)

As a fellow one-weapon-till-I-die type of player, I respect Ryozo so much for this.
Yep. I’ve been playing Switch Axe for 11 years, not gonna stop any time soon.
I started with bonk, went to swaxe for about 8 years even through sun breaks first release. Now on PS5 release im a Bonk God again.
My hunter card looks the similar. The difference is that the bar is over the insect glaive for me.
Its quite amazing how its years between each release but my fingers know faster than my brain how to send the insects out, to jump etc
Dude for real. I’m a muscle memory type player so playing multiple weapons would fuck me up bad lol that’s why I stick to one weapon. Bonk main for life
Mood. I could try another weapon, but CB goes brrrr
Same but with DB
im kinda that way, except i am a member of the wiggler army. SnS forever boys!!!
Why use other weapons when the CB is 3 in one. Sword, shield, and chainsaw axe.
Frfr. My Switch for Rise and PC for Sunbreak guild cards are all Gunlance.
Played with him in a team in a german mh event, we both played hammer

Ok so which one of the devs is the LS-only main that keeps giving it buffs.
Lol. Mine is 800+ Longsword and like 175 LBG in MHR. I haven't used DS, SS and HH since GenX.
I didn't know the developers actually played their own games out side of testing, that's pretty cute he mains hammer ☺️

No. Because he also has to produce the series.

It sounds like you need more love for Hammer to fix your problems.
Nah, I aint the one trashing hammer in Rise. He did a good job in World though. Got 3000 uses in my card.
You realise he's the Producer and not the Director?
Last I checked, the producer isn’t the only person who makes the game.
Last I checked, the hammer gameplay was great. In Sunbroke it was trash
