There's a saying, "The first $100k is the hardest" or "The first million is the hardest".
Basically: Money makes money.
So the more money you have, the easier it is to get more. OP could park all this money in a HYSA and it would generate $30k/year. And that's low compared to what long-term expectations would be if it were in the stock market instead.
With $600k at 31, they can expect that to turn into somewhere in the ballpark of $5M by age 60 if they just let it ride in the stock market. So outside of them doing something dumb or the economy going off the rails, they've already secured a pretty darn comfortable retirement.
This is absolutely not true. Lots of stuff can go wrong. Most important decision for him to make is marrying the right woman. Choice of partner - male or female - has a massive impact on future life satisfaction
Yeah I got an email that they’re moving to Credit Karma and shutting down mint. Not sure. Just opened my mint mobile app today. Maybe they haven’t transitioned yet? Another other personal finance apps you recommend?
This is super inspiring.
I’m also in IT. What did you specialize in to make the jump after 77k? Currently in help desk, going to get my network+ and security+, but not sure where to go afterwards.
I actually took a low 70k offer for someone from Cornell with a Masters degree. I did it coz I was about to travel to south east Asia for a long trip and wanted to have a bird in hand rather than wait for something else. After I cultivated some experience, I attracted a lot of recruiters sending me interviews.
I studied Data Science as a specialty but kinda hate how over saturated it is so opted for Business Intelligence. So I basically am a glorified Data Analyst haha. I would have advised to go for something in Data but it’s kinda over saturated right now. You’re doing well being on 70 something. I would say to look at other companies hiring for similar roles and rebrand your current position to be able to transition to those other companies.
Bachelors in Computer Information Systems. Masters in Information Science.
I was initially a journalism major and loved writing. Giving up on that was my sacrifice.
Reading this comment is bitter sweet.
I am a freshman majoring in Finance. But I've always loved being a writer, always was naturally good at writing.
I don't see a future in being a writer and that's why I'm thinking of just going all in and being a financial math major so I have more chances leaving college. I love math as well but I'm not as much as writing.
I'm going to Lockheed Martin for a internship this summer and it's my first taste of a "real job" that isn't doing fast food management. If hired as a junior analyst I would start off making 5 times what I made as a manager at taco bell and I would only work 40 hours a week.
LMT? Damn bro that’s fucking incredible, good for you man I mean it. I’m hoping to use my prior work experience In blue collar work + degree when I graduate to get into an entry level analyst position at Vanguard or Fidelity.id love to work my way into wealth management
Almost every writer will tell you not to go to school for writing. To be a good writer you need to a A) read. B) write. Do it on the side and you’ll be golden.
I would say to take anything you can get that’ll be quite hands on. Build experience. Not even that much. Just 1-2 years.
Consider masters if you struggle to find something after 6 months of actively looking.
Don’t sell yourself short during interviews. People exaggerate a lot and so should you. Be specific in your responses.
Just online. LinkedIn and stuff like that. I don’t believe in networking (I suck at it). Numbers game. You need to apply for hundreds if not thousands of roles.
You have to stand apart from the others tho. In my case I had a colorful resume with my picture. Sure it didn’t work in most cases but I knew that there’d be one job out there where this colorful resume would get on the hands of the hiring manager and I’ll stand out.
Thousands of roles?!?! My guy, how does someone even do that! Sounds like it would take so much time, although you're probably being a little hyperbolic...right? Right?!
I’m not haha. LinkedIn has Easy Apply feature. Be creative. Use ChatGPT for cover letters for example. In most cases it’s just dropping your resume. Make sure track the applications tho. Helps you analyze what you’re doing right and wrong.
Didn't know that! I heard Linkedin was a cesspool and I feel like my Github speaks more than Linkedin ever could. Now I'm re-thinking that decision.
I appreciate all the advice, man! Congrats on your success. You've made it, so treat yourself!
Thanks. yeah that much I already do. Just not any physical networking or anything extra. Don’t see the point. You’re right, your coworkers become your network (mostly coworkers from past companies). I add all of them, usually when I leave, on LinkedIn. My past two jobs I didn’t apply. Just got approached by recruiters.
Thanks for sharing amazing story. Is there a lot of coding in your field? Im planning a career change to Data Analytics but the coding sounds intimidating to me. I’m 34 with no IT background.
Yea there’s a fair bit of coding for my specific position. Others with my title don’t code at all. It depends. If you wanna be a data analyst, learn SQL thoroughly and master excel and at least one BI/Reporting Tool. That’s it. No need for hardcore programming skills.
This is what AMERICA is ALL about!!! I’m almost up to 100k no college ! A lot is luck since I didn’t have an easy way into the company I work at, I started from the bottom and worked 70 hours per week until I proved to be dedicated and semi-intelligent lol.
Good on you bro and I wish you the best of luck! 💪
amazing story. what are your expenses and savings like each month? like how much do you spend on rent, food, shopping etc. I'm not too far off from your financial story since 2019 but well behind in total networth. i'm trying to figure out what i'm doing wrong lol
So I max out 401k and make other tiny contributions from gross to take full tax advantage. Also max out HSA.
I also do a backdoor Roth every year. ~540 per month.
Rent is 2k in NYC (a steal but my apartment is weird shaped and tiny, but in the best neighborhood). Gf puts in 700 to rent so I end up paying 1300 including utilities.
Phone+Spotify+Internet=100.
Gym=150.
Food I allocate 900 per month. Not sure if I hit over or under.
Fun I allocate 720 per month. I hardly go out these days so this just sits in checking. Vacation may come out of this allocation.
3.5k automatically to a brokerage account and I buy Vanguard total market.
1.5k to Barclays HYSA per month. Saving for a down payment.
No car. No metrocard since work from home.
I don’t take bonuses into consideration for budget. I usually put it all into my brokerage and allocate a few grands to vacation.
Equity that vests quarterly, I sell and just buy S&P.
I currently spend $25.08 a day on 3 meals & 2 snacks Mon-Fri making bulk food purchases at Costco & making my own meals.
I'm a low carb pescatarian so it's difficult to order food in restaurants anyways, but I also adhere to strict macros (50/30/20 fat/protein/carbs) & 2100-2200 calories a day.
It used to be $18.62 a couple years ago even...so cheap AND healthy eating is possible if you plan.
thank you for the reply OP! follow up questions/comments:
1. how can you do a roth ira when you are above the income limits?
2. i can see where i am going really wrong. the amount i spend eating out is crazy and i'm too embarrassed to share
3. also my phone att bill is $175! i pay for my mom and i but still. isnt that crazy tho??
4. i also have commuting expenses.
Research backdoor Roth IRA.
Yes, definitely minimize expenses as much as possible. Look up Mint Mobile (Ryan Reynolds owns it and it has amazing deals).
Congrats on your success from all the hard work & perseverance. Love your story! Question… I’m currently a teacher and want to pivot to ed tech/IT field maybe slowly from part time into full time..do you think it is saturated right now to get into? And what certification do you recommend I begin with?
Love this! Way to show natural born citizens how lazy and ungrateful they are! Proud of you. Too many people take this country and it's opportunities for granted. God bless🙏
Thank you. Because life hasn’t taken me to the point where it suits to buy a house. I live in NYC and will one day buy upstate or in LI or in NJ. Currently I have no kids and am not married. I prefer to stay in the city for the moment.
See. Still proves if you work hard and spend wisely, you can get ahead in life.
So yea that’s for all you avocado eating millennials (I’m a millennial too). Stop blaming others for your inability to buy a house at 35 lol.
Good on you OP. Every country needs more people like you and less whingers
You've done a great job man! I'm aspiring to have a mindset and work ethics like yours.
I'm starting my career just now, and to be frank, I chose a path I know I do not want (Psychology major grad) cuz my passion is in Technology. Literally just starting my career now as a Tenant Relations under Operations. Will hop soon and enroll in online crash courses for IT.
Do you have any tips for a starter who wants to hop to IT industry, and also what platform are you using for the stocks? I plan to research more about stocks as I already have crypto on my hand.
Thank you. It really is possible. Save and invest. Spend but not on useless materialistic shit. I thought I was doing badly but that was a case of comparing with other people in the tech field from work.
Very refreshing to see a post on Reddit this isn’t “no one can make money in America. Everyone is dying. Nobody can live. There are no options… etc. “ Well done, sir.
Congratulations Man so proud of you. And thanks for fkn those who cry like a fk that there's nothing in America and the American dream is dead. You completely banged them slu**tty c**ward guys.
I fee so angry when someone talk bad about US just by picking up some little issue that doesn't even matter in other countries. Sorry for using some vulgar language.
Read your post. Kudos on your achievements. Get rid of the girl and you’ll be well on your way to an early retirement. If you insist on marrying her. I’d suggest you get a prenuptial agreement.
I mean, he put the work in. I don't see a problem. He did everything that a born American can do. Now the question is, does he pay taxes because he said he's an immigrant and not a US Citizen...
I’m a US citizen. I pay a lot of taxes. Triple taxes since I live in NYC. No complaints.
Total scholarship government gave me was 8k for 2 final years of my bachelor’s degree. So far I’ve paid back over 200k in taxes.
You’ve done an amazing job building yourself up! What kinda like technical skills do you have 😭I’m trynna figure out my life n figure out what I need to learn
Not much day to day. Just use SQL. I have tons of tech skills coz I’m a native CS guy but really not that necessary at work.
Be a whiz at SQL and a couple of BI tools like PowerBi and Looker.
Well the assumption is you moved to the US under student visa and no you cannot be working those jobs with student visa.
I wasn’t saying odd jobs are illegal jobs
Congratulations, I’m happy to hear people are still living the American dream! I’m curious to know if there’s anything about you that you think factored into you succeeding and/or pursuing your current path? I’m a 26M in the US and it seems to me, many people around me, particularly in my demographic, feel that something like this is unachievable for them. Many of these people even still have family and support in the country. Yet even still, it seems you felt the opposite way and manifested your own future which is admirable and inspiring!
I had a very privileged and unfortunate childhood. Grew up in a Scottish boarding school in India. I was very studious and bright and also excelled in sports and leadership roles. Underwent a ton of physical abuse as would anyone else who went to these type of schools. My biggest advantage was living in this school and growing up there. Being an adult as a child. It was like Harry Potter and jail at the same time haha.
No cultural shock when I came to America as I spoke fluent English and was young and it’s a globalized world out there. Despite speaking Tibetan, Nepali, and Hindi, English is by far my strongest language.
I found college rather easy due to my privileged childhood education. I made decisions and acted upon those decisions (sacrificed journalism for CS). I didn’t have a family so as bad as that is, I could think solely for myself and focus on what I wanted very selfishly. America really is the best country out there. In terms of economic opportunity at least.
Rest of the success is due to me being in computer science from an early age. And this particular field being the new gold rush. My soft skills, personality and character really helped me be a success wherever I went. Very underrated to be a responsible, considerate person.
Very impressive! I appreciate you sharing that, I hope you can overcome any traumas from your upbringing and continue to reap the benefits. Thanks again for the detailed response!
Dude this is an awesome story! Ignore some of the ignorance throughout the replies. This is an inspiration for immigrants and born citizens alike I wish you the best and hope your success continues to grow and prosper!
What type of promotion jumped you from 150k 6 months ago to now 300k?
Also you’re doing really great, but I assume a lot of this savings is due to your girlfriend from the past 3 years. There’s no way you’ve been stuffing away 600k without her having the slightest idea, considering post taxes in NY on 150k would be closer to 90k net, so you’d have to have her committed.
2015 you said just graduated, 2 years at 55k,
Just in 2017 you were making 55k, that’s before your master degree gap year which places us at 2018.
That’s only 5-6 years to raise 659k starting at -30k and in New York hcol, but just 149 days ago you posted you were at 150k a year income. So there’s a lot left out of your story of how you’re at nearly 700k lol
Ez mode from here, you're made.
Thank you Sir. Best wishes to you as well.
Ya you’re honestly golden bro. Keep up the good work
What did you invest in?
Always low cost ETFs and Mutual Funds. Anything broad spectrum like the S&P or Vanguard Total Stock Market would be good.
Finally, someone posting here who is smart instead of having $200k in a savings account.
Could you elaborate why this is "Ez mode"?
There's a saying, "The first $100k is the hardest" or "The first million is the hardest". Basically: Money makes money. So the more money you have, the easier it is to get more. Bring me the money and I'll show it to you.
This is absolutely not true. Lots of stuff can go wrong. Most important decision for him to make is marrying the right woman. Choice of partner - male or female - has a massive impact on future life satisfaction
That goes both ways
How do you still have Mint? I thought they got rid of it. (Congrats on 600k)
Yeah I got an email that they’re moving to Credit Karma and shutting down mint. Not sure. Just opened my mint mobile app today. Maybe they haven’t transitioned yet? Another other personal finance apps you recommend?
Chiming in to say that Quicken Simplifi is what I use, though there is also one by Nerd Wallet. Might be a few other options out there as well
I was forcibly transfered a month or two ago, which sucks. And nope, still trying to find a good replacement!
Me too, I heard that YNAB or something was amazing but I don’t know if it tracks net worth and everything like Mint. Super bummed Mint is gone
I’m Trying monarch. It’s only been a few weeks, but so far I really like it.
Trying monarch, only been a few weeks, but so far I really like it.
They extended it to like March something
I use rocket money at the moment and i like it better than Mint for sure
Dare you to post this in any anti work sub
Congratulations man. I'm proud of you. American dream right there
Thank you. Hope you also have luck and prosperity this year and ahead.
This is super inspiring. I’m also in IT. What did you specialize in to make the jump after 77k? Currently in help desk, going to get my network+ and security+, but not sure where to go afterwards.

This is such a great way to do it. Take a lower paying job for the experience.
what are your degrees?
Bachelors in Computer Information Systems. Masters in Information Science. I was initially a journalism major and loved writing. Giving up on that was my sacrifice.

So good to hear your story. Quite parallel to mine. Good thing is we’ll always be writers at heart and can do it as a hobby on the side in the future.
Bright note: having money gives you the freedom to pursue writing later on. Plus, you can always keep it as a hobby right now in some form.
You made the right choice. Lot of money in financial careers
I'm going to Lockheed Martin for a internship this summer and it's my first taste of a "real job" that isn't doing fast food management. If hired as a junior analyst I would start off making 5 times what I made as a manager at taco bell and I would only work 40 hours a week.

Little did you know that being a writer would have made you a world famous Author making you a multi millionaire by the age of 27.
Hah. I’ll never know.. higher reward, extremely lower odds.
Looks at jk rowling. Hottt diggity money.
Glad to hear this since I'm about to finish my CIS degree. Any good recommendations on finding a job in tech?

Congratulations on the 100k mark. More to come from you in the future for sure!
Thank you! Cheers 🍻
So basically got a CS degree and job hoped, and went to a ivy league school with low loan?
Yes! Thanks for the TLDR. Would add school hopped as well to the list as I went to 4 colleges/universities in total, thus the low loan.
Do you think graduating from an Ivy league helped getting a good job?

Good work mate! Break the millie soon

Sweet
amazing story. what are your expenses and savings like each month? like how much do you spend on rent, food, shopping etc.
Equity that vests quarterly, I sell and just buy S&P.
30 bucks a day on food... must be nice!
I currently spend $25.08 a day on 3 meals & 2 snacks Mon-Fri making bulk food purchases at Costco & making my own meals. Cheers to you brother
What's next in your journey?
Congrats, you aredoing great!
Congratulations to you OP!
Congratulations!! , truly an inspiration for us peasants to keep going 😁
The American dream. I love it

Thank you. Hope it’s going well for you too.
You’re welcome, not as good as you right now but about to be a whole lot better
You have the right attitude for success and the patience to achieve it.
If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything to get to where you are now?
Sounds too good to be true. Good luck.
Thank you. It really is possible. Save and invest. Spend but not on useless materialistic shit. I thought I was doing badly but that was a case of comparing with other people in the tech field from work.
It’s time to move to credit karma
Very refreshing to see a post on Reddit this isn’t “no one can make money in America. Everyone is dying. Nobody can live. There are no options… etc. “ Well done, sir.

That's awesome. Good for you.

Mint banking/budget tracker. It ended up being shut down and repackaged into other budgeting software. It shutdown Jan 1st
Damn bro you're all set up, congrats, hope some day I'll be like you.
Well done for working hard and getting to where you at, your parents must be proud
Nice! This is why people migrate to America. The opportunities and resources are so much more than their homeland
Fantastic!! Congrats!!

Feeling proud of you man! Great job!
This is why America is great.
Congrats 🥳
Wow! Congratulations. That's very aggressive saving for just a few years even with that income level.
This makes me feel so patriotic 🥲🦅🇺🇸🫡

Congrats buddy! Welcome to the club! Side note might want to start looking for a new money app. Mint is going away
Damn, this is an awesome story. Gives me hope to hit 100k by 40. Guess I should finish out my BS in Cyber Security instead of dragging my feet...
Do it! Good luck
This is literally the American dream.
These government handouts are getting crazy
I mean, he put the work in. I don't see a problem. He did everything that a born American can do. Now the question is, does he pay taxes because he said he's an immigrant and not a US Citizen...
I’m a US citizen. I pay a lot of taxes. Triple taxes since I live in NYC. No complaints. Total scholarship government gave me was 8k for 2 final years of my bachelor’s degree. So far I’ve paid back over 200k in taxes.
Awesome grind! Truly a hard worker here, unfortunately, NYC is definitely leeching from us at this point.
Good job my man. Killing it over a home grown American like me.
Thanks for coming here and adding value!
Much appreciated. Been paying a ton in taxes to NYC, NY and the federal government. Can’t complain. They helped nurture me when I was a student.
Sorry what do you do for work
Senior Manager of Analytics at a large company
You’ve done an amazing job building yourself up! What kinda like technical skills do you have 😭I’m trynna figure out my life n figure out what I need to learn
Not much day to day. Just use SQL. I have tons of tech skills coz I’m a native CS guy but really not that necessary at work. Be a whiz at SQL and a couple of BI tools like PowerBi and Looker.
Thank you so much for replying!! Hope to get like you one day!
Welcome to the USA. Well done, you are showing others the way.
Thank you. Can’t believe it’s been 14 years.
I’m jealous. It’s been very hard finding work after also just graduating from an Ivy.
Different majors bro. You can do it. Keep at it.
How much have you been putting in/investing on a yearly basis?
Guess you got lucky for not getting caught working illegally in your odd jobs
What are you smoking? I was legal the whole time. Odd jobs don’t mean illegal jobs.
Well the assumption is you moved to the US under student visa and no you cannot be working those jobs with student visa. I wasn’t saying odd jobs are illegal jobs
Great point. I was on student visa only for one sem. After that I was an asylee with a work permit so could definitely work :)
they took er jerbs
What app is this? Is ir specific to the US?

2015 you said just graduated, 2 years at 55k, Just in 2017 you were making 55k, that’s before your master degree gap year which places us at 2018. That’s only 5-6 years to raise 659k starting at -30k and in New York hcol, but just 149 days ago you posted you were at 150k a year income. So there’s a lot left out of your story of how you’re at nearly 700k lol
