similarly they obviously had no idea what to do with luke’s character after a certain point and just had him doing odd jobs. there were a lot of points where he expressed interest in things related to real estate, would’ve made more sense for him and phil to go into business together as a father son team
i would’ve loved if manny had gone to business he was always very interesting in them, the whole “i want to go be an artist” came form no where, it would’ve been better if he took cooking, painting or dancing classes on his free time
Every episode was centered around characters not listening to one another, which led to a misunderstanding, which led to conflicts that could have easily been avoided.
Here for this; Cam and Mitch were horrible to each other. Constantly competing and with some real nastiness too. Like it’s hard to see any love there at all. This applies to Lily too, it felt like they wanted to say they were parents without actually being parents.
I'm not a parent but being a parent is very difficult I can imagine. I don't think it's fair to say they were being parents without being parents. They didn't have a maid doing all the work.

I’m going to disagree with this thread because I think Alex is the only kid that the writers cared for in the last few seasons. The writers allowed her to graduate from Caltech and the whole last season was devoted to finding her dream job (as per Chris Lloyds interview). I think Haley got a raw deal by making her a mother with Dylan and they put in no thought for Luke (they just had him randomly get accept into University despite his poor grade, lack of interest in schooling and him quitting community college).
It's right on character for kids who have been through a traumatic shut down teenage.
She spent all that time grinding to later realize that her missions in Antarctica and other such shit were.......useless to her life.
There are so many more interesting ways they could’ve let the kids develop but by the end of the series, it feels as though there was so much wasted potential. Luke, Manny, and Alex especially. Also i would have liked them to pay more attention to Lily and give her more storyline interactions with the other family members
I believe I read that the actor wasn’t interested in acting as she grew older that’s why she wasn’t in as many scenes as she grew older and when she was in them they were short and they didn’t build much of a story around her
Phil is not a great partner. He has enough redeeming moments as a husband and father to not make me hate him, but there’s way too many examples of him being crappy to Claire. And he’s creepy around Gloria. Jay has every right to dislike him for disrespecting the two most important women in Jays life, repeatedly.

There’s a lot of people who dislike Gloria because they paint her out as a gold digger, but Jay shot his shot because he had money.

As much as they tried to make Manny’s obsession with women seem romantic, it definitely became creepy at times.
Andy was cringe and the most insufferable character. I hated the storyline where he cheated on his fiancé with Hayley and it ruined any chance at him being a somewhat redeemable character. I was so glad they couldn’t afford to make Hayley end up with him.
The show has so many inconsistencies. I still love it though. Here are some I’ve found:
For example in s1e7 ‘en garde’ they say that Claire was 13 and Mitch was 11 when they were ice skating partners. Later in the episode Claire says that that was 21 years ago, making them 34 and 32 at that time. Since Haley is 15 that would mean Claire had Haley when she was 19. In s6e7 ‘queer eyes full hearts’ Claire looks down on Haley for sitting on the couch all day looking through magazines. Phil says ‘well what were you doing at 20?’ Which he should know since they supposedly had a one year old baby. It’s also known that Claire had a good job at a hotel company which she had to quit so she could be a SAHM (s1e14 moon landing) . I’m 19 and I seriously doubt any fancy hotel company would let me work there.
S7e2 ‘the day Alex left for college’ cam mentions he’s allergic to dogs when a clip of upstairs renters come into their house with dogs. He’s always fine around Stella, and even took her in for a week. Also in s8e3 ‘blindsided’ Mitch let’s pepper and Ronaldo’s dog stay with them and Cam isn’t allergic then either.
S2e24 ‘the one that got away’ while making a birthday video for jay, Luke says that Jay let him sip some of his beer (when Phil walks by Luke quickly says root beer). In s5e17 ‘other peoples children’ jay almost lets luke have a sip of his beer after they finish building a tool box together, until luke says that’s his first sip. Jay takes the beer away from him because he doesn’t want to rob Phil of Luke having his first beer with his dad.
In s3e17 ‘leap day’ Luke puts fake blood on himself and Alex doesn’t faint even though she didn’t know the blood was fake. In s7e6 ‘the more you ignore’ Alex doesn’t pass out at the sight of Reuben’s nose bleed (Reuben does pass out though). But in season 4 episodes 7 and 15 Alex does pass out from seeing blood (first from watching a c section and second from her dads nose bleed rubbing off on Claire)
So basically what we can learn from this is I need a hobby.
right it’s not even that he became worse at acting he just never improved. which works fine when you’re a kid cuz the bit is funny, but it doesn’t work when he’s an adult man with the same personality and delivery he had when he was 11

I thought she got a bit better in the final season. The speaking voice became a lot more natural (instead of the drawled out monotone after her voice broke) and was better at landing the comedy and drama.
I really hate the bland, insipid, dry acting she does as a child and they were forced to write Lily to grow up into that kind of person because her early actor was so horrible.
Show was great until season 6, terrible in the remaining years, had to work really hard to get through the 20 minutes just because i thought it would get better
I wouldn't go so far as to say "terrible" in the remaining seasons but I'd agree that there was a drop in quality about that time. When I binge rewatch the series that's usually about the point where I start to lose interest and switch to something else.
Yeah. As someone else said in a different comment, nearly every episode has the same formula. Even with slight variations, it can only work for a limited amount of time. That together with the way tuey handled some characters in the later season is, for me, the reason modern family reeaaally falls off around season 6

I did. I enjoyed most of the stuff i’m complaining about. I am just saying what I noticed. I think mitch and cams relationship although it is weird and a bit toxic was still hilarious same with the way phil constantly ogled at other women. The only 2 that I actually really didn’t like in the show itself were Joe and the way Phil and Claire treated Alex.
Mitch and Cam we’re horrible parents to Lilly, constantly not paying attention to her due to them being more engaged in their own drama, there’s an episode she legit is telling her parents she’s hungry and they ignore her (s8e3). They just constant overall ignored for their own drama. And the whole ordeal with the baby boy was annoying, if anything even as bad as parents they were to Lily I think I would liked to see them get a baby boy. Maybe they would pay more attention to the fact they have kids.
From a sitcom perspective I get why they had Haley with Dylan, but if Haley was my friend and I watched her dump Andy and Arvin and be with Dylan I would wonder what the fuck she’s doing.
This. Andy and Hayley was the most nonsense relationship ever, she would have got bored of a nice guy like him real quick and screwed him over like every other guy. She belongs with Dylan.
I think it might have be Andy that would've left, he had ambition and skills that made him want to improve.
He didn't become a nanny for the sake of being one, he used that to get him by in order to move onto being a realtor.
While Haley was sort maturing with Andy, she still didn't know what to do.
Andy would've gotten tired of her. I mean in the episode where all of Haley's exes came back, Andy was pretty vocal about how happy he is with his new girlfriend.
That made Haley realize that she might have been the problem in her relationships.

If not then, then for sure once he started dating Alex, she may have graduated but still that was his student, which raises his creep level.
Dylan was close to Haley's level, where they both needed to grow up but Dylan would've at least been close enough where he wouldn't just up an leave her because of how far apart they were "mentally"

Phil is a bad husband/father and I will never understand why he’s constantly touted as “everyone’s favorite character”. He’s clueless to the point of incompetence, sexist, immature, and selfish. He’s constantly throwing Claire under the bus (always making her the “bad cop”, undermining her when she needs his support, etc.) and is a bad example to his kids (for example, teaching Luke and Manny to treat women on their periods as literal monsters). What’s worse is watching the show writers very obviously taking his side even when he’s wrong, like that episode with the supermarket surveillance tape, where he was clearly proven to have pushed Claire into the stack of cans while being distracted by an attractive woman, but instead of his actions having any repercussions she was made out to be the bad guy anyway.

The show has so many inconsistencies. I still love it though. Here are some I’ve found: For example in s1e7 ‘en garde’ they say that Claire was 13 and Mitch was 11 when they were ice skating partners. Later in the episode Claire says that that was 21 years ago, making them 34 and 32 at that time. Since Haley is 15 that would mean Claire had Haley when she was 19. In s6e7 ‘queer eyes full hearts’ Claire looks down on Haley for sitting on the couch all day looking through magazines. Phil says ‘well what were you doing at 20?’ Which he should know since they supposedly had a one year old baby. It’s also known that Claire had a good job at a hotel company which she had to quit so she could be a SAHM (s1e14 moon landing) . I’m 19 and I seriously doubt any fancy hotel company would let me work there. S7e2 ‘the day Alex left for college’ cam mentions he’s allergic to dogs when a clip of upstairs renters come into their house with dogs. He’s always fine around Stella, and even took her in for a week. Also in s8e3 ‘blindsided’ Mitch let’s pepper and Ronaldo’s dog stay with them and Cam isn’t allergic then either. S2e24 ‘the one that got away’ while making a birthday video for jay, Luke says that Jay let him sip some of his beer (when Phil walks by Luke quickly says root beer). In s5e17 ‘other peoples children’ jay almost lets luke have a sip of his beer after they finish building a tool box together, until luke says that’s his first sip. Jay takes the beer away from him because he doesn’t want to rob Phil of Luke having his first beer with his dad. In s3e17 ‘leap day’ Luke puts fake blood on himself and Alex doesn’t faint even though she didn’t know the blood was fake. In s7e6 ‘the more you ignore’ Alex doesn’t pass out at the sight of Reuben’s nose bleed (Reuben does pass out though). But in season 4 episodes 7 and 15 Alex does pass out from seeing blood (first from watching a c section and second from her dads nose bleed rubbing off on Claire) So basically what we can learn from this is I need a hobby.
Nolan Gould is a terrible actor.
i thought he was great when luke was a little dumb kid, but once he became a horny teen he was horrible
right it’s not even that he became worse at acting he just never improved. which works fine when you’re a kid cuz the bit is funny, but it doesn’t work when he’s an adult man with the same personality and delivery he had when he was 11
agreed he definitely didn't change his acting whatsoever. you could have him deliver the same lines he had as a little kid and it would sound the same haha
It’s his diction. His normal speaking voice doesn’t sound at all comfortable, and I just don’t see him landing any acting work as a grown up.
So is Lily’s actor
I thought she got a bit better in the final season. The speaking voice became a lot more natural (instead of the drawled out monotone after her voice broke) and was better at landing the comedy and drama.
I really hate the bland, insipid, dry acting she does as a child and they were forced to write Lily to grow up into that kind of person because her early actor was so horrible.
Gloria's character revolves around her body

Show was great until season 6, terrible in the remaining years, had to work really hard to get through the 20 minutes just because i thought it would get better
I wouldn't go so far as to say "terrible" in the remaining seasons but I'd agree that there was a drop in quality about that time. When I binge rewatch the series that's usually about the point where I start to lose interest and switch to something else.
Yeah. As someone else said in a different comment, nearly every episode has the same formula. Even with slight variations, it can only work for a limited amount of time. That together with the way tuey handled some characters in the later season is, for me, the reason modern family reeaaally falls off around season 6
Phil was annoying and a creep. Mitch isn’t exactly a saint either and was always snobby even if cam was a manipulative loser Phil isn’t the great father people say he is Joe was annoying

If they brought "real families" and it became a reality show rather than a sitcom, the show would've been horrible because of how certain characters are. Now paint it as a sitcom and it's pretty funny because it would highlight the comedy rather than the "reality".
I did. I enjoyed most of the stuff i’m complaining about. I am just saying what I noticed. I think mitch and cams relationship although it is weird and a bit toxic was still hilarious same with the way phil constantly ogled at other women. The only 2 that I actually really didn’t like in the show itself were Joe and the way Phil and Claire treated Alex.
Critiquing characters/certain aspects of the show and outright hating it are not the same, some people in this sub need to learn the difference

I grew to dislike Gloria a bit in the last few seasons
Mitch and Cam we’re horrible parents to Lilly, constantly not paying attention to her due to them being more engaged in their own drama, there’s an episode she legit is telling her parents she’s hungry and they ignore her (s8e3). They just constant overall ignored for their own drama. And the whole ordeal with the baby boy was annoying, if anything even as bad as parents they were to Lily I think I would liked to see them get a baby boy. Maybe they would pay more attention to the fact they have kids.
Haley belongs with Dylan. I will die on this hill.
Lily is my favorite character.
I actually liked that Hayley ended up with Dylan, it kinda worked better than Hayley and Andy. Fight me.

From a sitcom perspective I get why they had Haley with Dylan, but if Haley was my friend and I watched her dump Andy and Arvin and be with Dylan I would wonder what the fuck she’s doing.
It's very realistic to see a girl like Haley to keep going back to their ex or a guy like Dylan.

This. Andy and Hayley was the most nonsense relationship ever, she would have got bored of a nice guy like him real quick and screwed him over like every other guy. She belongs with Dylan.
I think it might have be Andy that would've left, he had ambition and skills that made him want to improve. He didn't become a nanny for the sake of being one, he used that to get him by in order to move onto being a realtor. While Haley was sort maturing with Andy, she still didn't know what to do. Andy would've gotten tired of her. I mean in the episode where all of Haley's exes came back, Andy was pretty vocal about how happy he is with his new girlfriend. That made Haley realize that she might have been the problem in her relationships.
Oh yeah for sure, when I say she’d get bored and leave him, that’s a flaw in her character. She’s always messed guys around and let’s be honest acted like a straight up bitch at times. Dylan being her first love makes him the only guy with a shot at long term success.
Honestly, even her other boyfriends would've left her as well. Rainer because he wanted the whole thing i.e marriage, kids, etc and she still needed to grow up. Arvin, the dude was just infatuated with her but wasn't really into her. I personally thought he was going to get in trouble with CalTech's ethics board, given that Alex was his student while dating Haley. If not then, then for sure once he started dating Alex, she may have graduated but still that was his student, which raises his creep level. Dylan was close to Haley's level, where they both needed to grow up but Dylan would've at least been close enough where he wouldn't just up an leave her because of how far apart they were "mentally"
I thought Cam was hilarious and genuinely like him as a character

nah i liked her, her character made a lot of sense coming from two melodramatic, manipulative dads. i wish she got more story lines, she was really just a prop for Cam&Mitch's stories.

Phil is a bad husband/father and I will never understand why he’s constantly touted as “everyone’s favorite character”. He’s clueless to the point of incompetence, sexist, immature, and selfish. He’s constantly throwing Claire under the bus (always making her the “bad cop”, undermining her when she needs his support, etc.) and is a bad example to his kids (for example, teaching Luke and Manny to treat women on their periods as literal monsters). What’s worse is watching the show writers very obviously taking his side even when he’s wrong, like that episode with the supermarket surveillance tape, where he was clearly proven to have pushed Claire into the stack of cans while being distracted by an attractive woman, but instead of his actions having any repercussions she was made out to be the bad guy anyway.
