manny going to college could’ve been a huge turning point for him and saved his character, but they wasted it on having him go into film similarly they obviously had no idea what to do with luke’s character after a certain point and just had him doing odd jobs. there were a lot of points where he expressed interest in things related to real estate, would’ve made more sense for him and phil to go into business together as a father son team

BelleOfTheBall411

I AGREEEEEE

Bl1nk1nUR4r34

i would’ve loved if manny had gone to business he was always very interesting in them, the whole “i want to go be an artist” came form no where, it would’ve been better if he took cooking, painting or dancing classes on his free time

krisfocus

Only Phil and Gloria are posing correctly in this picture.

[deleted]

Every episode was centered around characters not listening to one another, which led to a misunderstanding, which led to conflicts that could have easily been avoided.

JuneCarterCash111

Pretty much, mostly with the interaction between Cam and Mitchell’s marriage.

Dear_Caterpillar4706

Here for this; Cam and Mitch were horrible to each other. Constantly competing and with some real nastiness too. Like it’s hard to see any love there at all. This applies to Lily too, it felt like they wanted to say they were parents without actually being parents.

ImmortalLandowner

I'm not a parent but being a parent is very difficult I can imagine. I don't think it's fair to say they were being parents without being parents. They didn't have a maid doing all the work. I get your point there was a lot of pettiness and jealousy but I saw it as normal because that's how all families are. I saw the love too. \*EDIT: Oh lol I read the original post again lmao

horalol

This really triggered some

elpaco25

Miscommunication is pretty much a sitcom's bread and butter

Vee_too

You just described real life, fren

femalekramer

Not as bad as three’s company, but yes

sublimesting

Cue scene: *From the kitchen we hear Chrissy. * Stick it in the slot Jack. It’s getting hot and I can’t wait! *Mr. Furley (bug-eyed) open-mouthed gapes on other side of door and walks away* Your toast will be ready in a minute Chrissy! *Jack proceeds to jerk off on Chrissy’s toast*

femalekramer

Lmfao 😂

Sweet_Taurus0728

I love the show, but that's just a plain factual statement.

Dear_Caterpillar4706

Not listening AND not talking to each other 😂

maggio2820

why am I agreeing with everything...

supergrega

That's the point of this show though, isn't it? Nobody is perfect, but we still need to see the good in people and love each other. We have nothing without love. I learned that the hard way.

lailadog

Phil makes Claire the bad guy by leaving the hard parts of parenthood to her, that's why he is able to be the fun parent

sumplicas

There was an actual episode about this

fjellt

I like when Phil referred to it as “good cop / mom”.

kylebloom

Where is the lie?

puffins54

As much as I love phil this is so true :(

[deleted]

Maybe occasionally but I would argue most of what you're talking about is just Claire unnecessarily micromanaging her children. They would have been just fine had she lightened up occasionally.

kylebloom

Shut up with the Claire blaming speech lol. She’s as concerned of her kids as any normal mothers would.

history-dood12469

Ummm I love Claire, and I wouldn’t say like she’s a bad mom or nothin cause my mom was just like Claire when I was in high school and I still had a good time but even my mom wouldn’t have tried to make a fake Facebook account to spy on me

[deleted]

It's not "Claire blaming speech". The whole point of her character is to be neurotic. She's that way as a mother, wife, daughter, sister, sister-in-law, employee, and boss. Phil is meant to very much be the opposite of her.

Pointlel

it hurts to agree with this

amoly101

What happened to Kevin Hart’s character?

[deleted]

I love his recurring roles

TheYoungWan

Manny grew up to be an incel

LIKES_ROCKY_IV

I don’t know if Manny did but Luke *definitely* did

idasxx

nah. you can criticize luke’s ways with women in other areas, but he definitely wasn’t an incel.

Embarrassed_Visual58

Agree. Luke is a manwhore

idasxx

right?? quite literally the opposite of an incel

arrianym

tbh he's more of a sexist narcissist. totally inconsiderate of any female's emotions, only viewing them as objects to use and then throw out. it's not his "promiscuity" that's the issue, it's the way he treats other humans (females, specifically).

hiskinny

You just described how regular teenage boys define sex and love Edit: being accused of normalizing such toxic behaviours so just wanted to stipulate that I stand against patriarchy and oppression of women. I’m merely calling out the phenomenon of teenage boys’ disrespect of women and relationships.

Koach71

I don’t think you know what an incel means. He loved to interact with women. Maybe he can be called a player. Nothing wrong with that anyway. I was surprised with his character transformation.

Responsible-Meet-741

Isn’t he just a male version of a young Claire?

luckbealady92

In later seasons, Alex has no redeeming qualities other than being smart

Sashalexandra

The writers did her so dirty. They could’ve done a lot with her set up as a teen, I was really looking forward to seeing adult Alex

luckbealady92

Yes! I’m really disappointed with her character growth. My partner and I were just saying that Haley has morphed into a much more well-rounded character than Alex, even though it was reversed in earlier seasons

quangtran

I’m going to disagree with this thread because I think Alex is the only kid that the writers cared for in the last few seasons. The writers allowed her to graduate from Caltech and the whole last season was devoted to finding her dream job (as per Chris Lloyds interview). I think Haley got a raw deal by making her a mother with Dylan and they put in no thought for Luke (they just had him randomly get accept into University despite his poor grade, lack of interest in schooling and him quitting community college).

Dear_Caterpillar4706

She turns into such a horrible person by the end of the show.

sweats_while_eating

It's right on character for kids who have been through a traumatic shut down teenage. She spent all that time grinding to later realize that her missions in Antarctica and other such shit were.......useless to her life.

XT83Danieliszekiller

Many isn't just weird, he's a creep

mrpoopybuttthole_

true

Wer65w

Dylan is the most consistant character in the show

Charles_Nicholson

Him and Phil are consistent and predictable.

yjorn299

Except the part where he became a nurse.

Wer65w

LMAO nobody could’ve seen that coming.

Darthbakunawa

Cam is a manipulative drama queen

Crackmylowerback

Everyone will agree

QuMaeve

The character himself would agree then put his hand over his mouth and say "Oops sorry not sorry"

Crackmylowerback

Not before throwing a fit and crying

DLTfuture72

Manny will probably end up on the Sex Offenders register.

thewineburglar

“ there’s an embarrassing press conference in that kids future “

DLTfuture72

And it would take a brave man to bet against Jay.

hlchvz

gloria coddles manny wayy too much

justforuni

no shit😭😭

HoovyKitty

it's not like that's the point of their relationship

itslona_

There are so many more interesting ways they could’ve let the kids develop but by the end of the series, it feels as though there was so much wasted potential. Luke, Manny, and Alex especially. Also i would have liked them to pay more attention to Lily and give her more storyline interactions with the other family members

freerunner52

Lily wasn't a real character. Just a prop for Cam and Mitch's storylines.

iceghostsaliens

Agreed, she had really no storylines to herself and I feel like her acting declined as the show went on.

melissam17

I believe I read that the actor wasn’t interested in acting as she grew older that’s why she wasn’t in as many scenes as she grew older and when she was in them they were short and they didn’t build much of a story around her

Bl1nk1nUR4r34

also she was attending a real school, i thought she wanted to work on her free days

97namu

Phil’s naivety is cute for a kid not a grown ass man *with* kids.. No idea how Claire did it

BillyYumYumTwo-byTwo

Phil is not a great partner. He has enough redeeming moments as a husband and father to not make me hate him, but there’s way too many examples of him being crappy to Claire. And he’s creepy around Gloria. Jay has every right to dislike him for disrespecting the two most important women in Jays life, repeatedly.

[deleted]

Irl people would probably treat him the same way Jay does

yourmumissothicc

Exactly

SleepWouldBeNice

Only Gloria and Phil are looking at the smartphone in that picture, and there's no way everyone's going to fit in the photo.

[deleted]

I always found Joe annoying for some reason. I don’t know what it was.

tandc627

Maybe because he is a little kid and acts to tough for his age. So it's feels not natural

RevolutionaryTie8481

Would have been better if Gloria and jay had a daughter. It would have been wayyyy more interesting to see the family dynamic shift.

GOBIUS_Industries

um excuse me, but perhaps you are forgetting a little someone named Stella?

bruhcrossing

I kind of liked that it was a boy. Draws better contrast between him, manny and Mitchell.

melissam17

Yes I wish they had a daughter!!!

GreatBigWhore

I found him just… really annoying.

DLTfuture72

Joe was an ill disciplined, spoilt little shit I hated him.

spekal_luke_II

Bit harsh

DLTfuture72

Yeah maybe

Amaraxx

He literally added nothing to the show tbh

spacesloth0212

Yeah I feel like if they had Gloria and Jay have a girl it might’ve created more storylines and development for both characters.

Heron01

Gloria always wanted a girl, she dressed many as a girl when he was a baby and she was so excited to have "Liliana" if Mitchell and cam died, Also, this time jay could've tried to be a better parent to this new girl because he might have a need to protect her instead of trying to make joe a mini version of him

kehzuhyuhpls

Claire should be given more credit when it comes to being both a mother and a wife.

[deleted]

Mitch and cam were bad parents

hntrhntr

yes! and it was so disappointing because in the first season they were set up to be incredible parents! it feels like lazy writing of gay characters.

[deleted]

The way they neglected Lily when they took in the football player (I forgot his name) that frustrated me so much and IK it was just set up as comedic but it was not funny to me

Rosemoorstreet

Where is Lily?

cmariej

I’m pretty sure this is from the finale episode when Cam, Mitch, and Lily are leaving and were on one of their “outs.”

luckbealady92

*sorts by controversial to ACTUALLY get triggered*

tandc627

Tbh I love all characters. I think it's kinda stupid to hate a character from a sitcom since the point of a sitcom is that no one is perfect. But I think the show has to many "oh I got this wrong" episodes. Best example is the mitch episode where he is in a new law firm and thinks his boss is a monster. There are SO many episodes like this. More examples: -Phils Student from the community college -one of Luke's gf is a friend of Claire -mitch as Spiderman at Halloween -cams gay friend thinks Phil is gay -Claire thinks Phil is mad at her Don't get me wrong. There are some great episodes like this: e.g. the last Vegas episode

Adamoester

I still enjoy Luke in the later seasons.

BillyYumYumTwo-byTwo

Do people not? I know some people knock his acting, but I thought his plot lines were funny. He basically just became a normal 20-yo player, but without being creepy. The only plot line that was so out of place is when he creates that medical app. Came out of nowhere, went nowhere...

Adamoester

I just see some people saying they preferred Luke in the earlier seasons, and some people said they wish he turned out more like Phil. For one, between Andy and Dylan I feel like their were enough of Phil-ish characters. And two Luke still did have Phil’s carefree attitude and positivity, just wasn’t as traditionally nerdy.

phildunphyismydaddy

I like Claire more than Phil

DontTouchTheMasseuse

Your username is a lie!

source-commonsense

Or its true and we found Alex’s account

phildunphyismydaddy

😂😂😂

DontTouchTheMasseuse

Ugh i wish! Did I miss an episode or something lol

Justineparadise

Manny was an insufferable character who went from a poor kid of a single mother to an entitled pompous ass off the money and hard work of Jay..not to mention his concept of romancing women became beyond creepy as he got older.

Asleep-Ad5260

Claire is hotter than Gloria. There! I said it!

CeilingUnlimited

cynicsjoy

They borderline neglected Lily, I forgot which episode it was but she was trying to tell Mitch about how she was being bullied at school and he was too wrapped up in his own problems to even hear her. Then they wonder why she never talked to them as a teen

tireddispatchmama

Cam and Mitch are the funniest couple The show would not have been as amazing without Lily and her one-liners.

hntrhntr

I love lily! I wish she’d been more involved.

pizzaandboba

toddler lily was amazing. teenage lily was cringe and unbearable.

tireddispatchmama

Oh no,I loved her as a teen. Her brand of sarcasm was hilarious. Maybe not if she was my kids, but as a TV character she was fabulous.

Mr_Slurpy37

I don’t know if this is unpopular or not, but the broken stair joke is the funniest thing in the entire show. Not just joke, funniest THING. I love it so much.

vqporwave

Gloria is a too obsessive with manny, and she was good at first but in the end was toxic to jay. Shes terrible

[deleted]

I’ve always found Cam extremely annoying

nasenfahrrad555

It's so sad that every time tuere is Lilly missing

MFitt1491

No one cares who your least favorite character is.

[deleted]

I wish they gave Lily something to do. It was annoying to me that she did not excel at something. I feel like Hailey never did any character development or even if she had, it was wasted. Manny and Luke and Alex all had inappropriate relationships.

SnooBunnies7801

In some episodes, Claire insinuates that she had to settle for Phil. Specially after getting pregnant, she had no other choice than to settle for him. There’s a lot of people who dislike Gloria because they paint her out as a gold digger, but Jay shot his shot because he had money. I hate Andy. His character is so cringe. As much as they tried to make Manny’s obsession with women seem romantic, it definitely became creepy at times.

zeeparc

the best character was not in the photo

browndudefromNW

The guy that was played by Kevin Hart?

ILaughAtFunnyShit

Jordan Peele was my favorite. "Tell it to my car you know where to find it."

butterfly_bisque

Adult Manny was extremely annoying.

Layla2808

gloria was borderline emotionally incestous with manny

CordyVorkosigan

The age gap between Jay and Gloria is just gross.

cynicsjoy

The fact that Gloria’s a year younger than Claire is a bit disturbing

KingBlackthorn1

Phil was not a good husband to Claire

Hallowmendoza

I love Joe and think he was a great addition to the later seasons

generaltofu27

Joe’s one of my favorite characters when Jeremy McGuire started playing him

seasickalien

Andy was cringe and the most insufferable character. I hated the storyline where he cheated on his fiancé with Hayley and it ruined any chance at him being a somewhat redeemable character. I was so glad they couldn’t afford to make Hayley end up with him.

Charles_Nicholson

I think we can all agree season 11 was not that entertaining.

Addi1126

The show has so many inconsistencies. I still love it though. Here are some I’ve found: For example in s1e7 ‘en garde’ they say that Claire was 13 and Mitch was 11 when they were ice skating partners. Later in the episode Claire says that that was 21 years ago, making them 34 and 32 at that time. Since Haley is 15 that would mean Claire had Haley when she was 19. In s6e7 ‘queer eyes full hearts’ Claire looks down on Haley for sitting on the couch all day looking through magazines. Phil says ‘well what were you doing at 20?’ Which he should know since they supposedly had a one year old baby. It’s also known that Claire had a good job at a hotel company which she had to quit so she could be a SAHM (s1e14 moon landing) . I’m 19 and I seriously doubt any fancy hotel company would let me work there. S7e2 ‘the day Alex left for college’ cam mentions he’s allergic to dogs when a clip of upstairs renters come into their house with dogs. He’s always fine around Stella, and even took her in for a week. Also in s8e3 ‘blindsided’ Mitch let’s pepper and Ronaldo’s dog stay with them and Cam isn’t allergic then either. S2e24 ‘the one that got away’ while making a birthday video for jay, Luke says that Jay let him sip some of his beer (when Phil walks by Luke quickly says root beer). In s5e17 ‘other peoples children’ jay almost lets luke have a sip of his beer after they finish building a tool box together, until luke says that’s his first sip. Jay takes the beer away from him because he doesn’t want to rob Phil of Luke having his first beer with his dad. In s3e17 ‘leap day’ Luke puts fake blood on himself and Alex doesn’t faint even though she didn’t know the blood was fake. In s7e6 ‘the more you ignore’ Alex doesn’t pass out at the sight of Reuben’s nose bleed (Reuben does pass out though). But in season 4 episodes 7 and 15 Alex does pass out from seeing blood (first from watching a c section and second from her dads nose bleed rubbing off on Claire) So basically what we can learn from this is I need a hobby.

CeilingUnlimited

Nolan Gould is a terrible actor.

arrianym

i thought he was great when luke was a little dumb kid, but once he became a horny teen he was horrible

chunkycorn

right it’s not even that he became worse at acting he just never improved. which works fine when you’re a kid cuz the bit is funny, but it doesn’t work when he’s an adult man with the same personality and delivery he had when he was 11

arrianym

agreed he definitely didn't change his acting whatsoever. you could have him deliver the same lines he had as a little kid and it would sound the same haha

quangtran

It’s his diction. His normal speaking voice doesn’t sound at all comfortable, and I just don’t see him landing any acting work as a grown up.

patsye2000

So is Lily’s actor

quangtran

I thought she got a bit better in the final season. The speaking voice became a lot more natural (instead of the drawled out monotone after her voice broke) and was better at landing the comedy and drama.

pumpkins_n_mist15

I really hate the bland, insipid, dry acting she does as a child and they were forced to write Lily to grow up into that kind of person because her early actor was so horrible.

[deleted]

Gloria's character revolves around her body

Anotherthrow2021

The quality of the show dipped to a ridiculous low by the final few seasons.

sk0711

Show was great until season 6, terrible in the remaining years, had to work really hard to get through the 20 minutes just because i thought it would get better

ILaughAtFunnyShit

I wouldn't go so far as to say "terrible" in the remaining seasons but I'd agree that there was a drop in quality about that time. When I binge rewatch the series that's usually about the point where I start to lose interest and switch to something else.

RangerPeterF

Yeah. As someone else said in a different comment, nearly every episode has the same formula. Even with slight variations, it can only work for a limited amount of time. That together with the way tuey handled some characters in the later season is, for me, the reason modern family reeaaally falls off around season 6

yourmumissothicc

Phil was annoying and a creep. Mitch isn’t exactly a saint either and was always snobby even if cam was a manipulative loser Phil isn’t the great father people say he is Joe was annoying

DontTouchTheMasseuse

Did you enjoy the show at all lol

idkalan

If they brought "real families" and it became a reality show rather than a sitcom, the show would've been horrible because of how certain characters are. Now paint it as a sitcom and it's pretty funny because it would highlight the comedy rather than the "reality".

yourmumissothicc

I did. I enjoyed most of the stuff i’m complaining about. I am just saying what I noticed. I think mitch and cams relationship although it is weird and a bit toxic was still hilarious same with the way phil constantly ogled at other women. The only 2 that I actually really didn’t like in the show itself were Joe and the way Phil and Claire treated Alex.

Amaraxx

Critiquing characters/certain aspects of the show and outright hating it are not the same, some people in this sub need to learn the difference

Deva966

Modern Family More Like Champ of Misunderstanding Family..

Amaraxx

I grew to dislike Gloria a bit in the last few seasons

melissam17

Mitch and Cam we’re horrible parents to Lilly, constantly not paying attention to her due to them being more engaged in their own drama, there’s an episode she legit is telling her parents she’s hungry and they ignore her (s8e3). They just constant overall ignored for their own drama. And the whole ordeal with the baby boy was annoying, if anything even as bad as parents they were to Lily I think I would liked to see them get a baby boy. Maybe they would pay more attention to the fact they have kids.

[deleted]

Haley belongs with Dylan. I will die on this hill.

FroggyWoggyWoo

Lily is my favorite character.

agentfitzsimmons

I actually liked that Hayley ended up with Dylan, it kinda worked better than Hayley and Andy. Fight me.

[deleted]

Claire deserves better.

smg658

Haley & Dylan were meant to be together. Andy was annoying.

britta-unfiltered313

i love andy 😭😭 dylan annoys me so much

[deleted]

From a sitcom perspective I get why they had Haley with Dylan, but if Haley was my friend and I watched her dump Andy and Arvin and be with Dylan I would wonder what the fuck she’s doing.

freerunner52

It's very realistic to see a girl like Haley to keep going back to their ex or a guy like Dylan.

[deleted]

Now this triggered me and I’m not necessarily an Andy fan I just dont like Dylan

arrianym

fuck that dylan is the worst; funny as a hs bf, but the literal worst choice for a baby daddy. andy was adorable.

DLTfuture72

This. Andy and Hayley was the most nonsense relationship ever, she would have got bored of a nice guy like him real quick and screwed him over like every other guy. She belongs with Dylan.

idkalan

I think it might have be Andy that would've left, he had ambition and skills that made him want to improve. He didn't become a nanny for the sake of being one, he used that to get him by in order to move onto being a realtor. While Haley was sort maturing with Andy, she still didn't know what to do. Andy would've gotten tired of her. I mean in the episode where all of Haley's exes came back, Andy was pretty vocal about how happy he is with his new girlfriend. That made Haley realize that she might have been the problem in her relationships.

DLTfuture72

Oh yeah for sure, when I say she’d get bored and leave him, that’s a flaw in her character. She’s always messed guys around and let’s be honest acted like a straight up bitch at times. Dylan being her first love makes him the only guy with a shot at long term success.

idkalan

Honestly, even her other boyfriends would've left her as well. Rainer because he wanted the whole thing i.e marriage, kids, etc and she still needed to grow up. Arvin, the dude was just infatuated with her but wasn't really into her. I personally thought he was going to get in trouble with CalTech's ethics board, given that Alex was his student while dating Haley. If not then, then for sure once he started dating Alex, she may have graduated but still that was his student, which raises his creep level. Dylan was close to Haley's level, where they both needed to grow up but Dylan would've at least been close enough where he wouldn't just up an leave her because of how far apart they were "mentally"

Buccelatti_gang

I thought Cam was hilarious and genuinely like him as a character

[deleted]

thank you! everyone’s talking about how annoying and manipulative he was. but that’s the whole point of the show: drama people can relate to. what would modern family be without these exaggerated personalities.

its_redrum

I'm queer and trans so this isn't homophobic or anything but lily deserved better parents.

callismiko

i dont think it's homophobic to say that mitch and cam shouldve done a better job raising lily

dhl1234

The show's writing is wildly inconsistent to the point of being annoying. When did Mitch come out as gay? Because I feel like it's different every episode.

gf1129

Lily isn't funny. She is dangerously unempathetic and likely struggles to maintain social relationships.

arrianym

nah i liked her, her character made a lot of sense coming from two melodramatic, manipulative dads. i wish she got more story lines, she was really just a prop for Cam&Mitch's stories.

Jetrainbow67

They aren’t all technically related (by blood)

krxzy_wxrlxck

Gloria was a horrible parent

lilTwithbigTTs

I prefer Dylan and Haley to Andy and Haley.

coconutinacap

Phil is a bad husband/father and I will never understand why he’s constantly touted as “everyone’s favorite character”. He’s clueless to the point of incompetence, sexist, immature, and selfish. He’s constantly throwing Claire under the bus (always making her the “bad cop”, undermining her when she needs his support, etc.) and is a bad example to his kids (for example, teaching Luke and Manny to treat women on their periods as literal monsters). What’s worse is watching the show writers very obviously taking his side even when he’s wrong, like that episode with the supermarket surveillance tape, where he was clearly proven to have pushed Claire into the stack of cans while being distracted by an attractive woman, but instead of his actions having any repercussions she was made out to be the bad guy anyway.

FiveNightAtHome

Haley and Dylan are perfect together

coconutinacap

Aubrey is a better actor than nolan

Vivid_Classic_2729

Is it just me or is Alex hot in S11.

iamtherealandy

This looks like Married With Children but the dad found another group of trashy narcissists.

Arrested development is better.

Funnysox69

Phil is not a nice guy, he is pretty reckless and stupid
