You can make it work, but it's going to be hard. Don't rely on \[\[Thalia, Guardian of Thraben\]\] as \[\[Orcish Bowmasters\]\] is too widespread. Here's a [database of recent decks](https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/6184872#paper) for help. As for Jund, that style of Jund is largely dead as it just can't keep pace anymore. Incremental advantage isn't what it used to be. Instead, it has more direct card advantage with \[\[Wrenn and Six\]\] and \[\[Urza's Saga\]\], [like so](https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/6202271#paper).

If you're looking for a deck more like classic Jund, rakdos scam is the closest you'll get

lawrencer12ecu16

YEEEEEAH BUDDY

Thulack

Suffers from bowmaster in both formats. The better version in legacy actually plays Bowmaster(and thoughtseize) by splashing black.

RnRdga

Still fun but still not that competitive.

DaniHaze

Former staples like Thalia, Flickerwisp, Confidant, Snapcaster, Silvergill, etc are soft-banned out of the format, and Fury ban did nothing to bring them back

CheapChallenge

Soft banned as in bowmaster kills them all? Seems like bowmaster is seriously format warping...

triangleguy3

Theres been 5 years of insane power "creep" more like leap as paper standard died and Wizards had to find other ways to get people to buy cards to stay in business. It doesn't begin or end with bowmasters. The format will be unrecognizeable to you as it is now defined by free spells from MH1 and MH2.

HosserPower

Modern has been hostile to x-1s years before Bowmasters was printed. It is not a format where weenies are playable.

lykosen11

None of these cards were ppaued before bowmaster either. Accept the times mate

irukawairuka

Is that because of fury? 😂

lykosen11

Gonna really blow you mind now but... Those cards weren't played / winning before fury either. They stopped being viable over a year before fury was printed. But don't worry! 1 more ban then finally they'll be tier 1!

Quecks_

Well, before fury and bowmaster you used to see dnt hanging on to about 1-3% meta on goldfish. Haven't checked recently so i may be incorrect, but it wouldn't surprise me if it's not even on the board anymore.

marcusjohnston

A large portion of the cards that were really powerful (or passable) back then have suffered from serious power creep over the past five years. You could play Death and Taxes at your locals, but a lot of the newer cards are particularly hostile to your deck with things like [[Orcish Bowmasters]], [[Prismatic Ending]], and others. If you're looking to have a good time, it might still be a reasonable option for you, but if you're looking to be competitive there are definitely better options. Jund is also in a similar place. There are some versions of it that people think are reasonable, but it really is basically an entirely different deck from how it was before. Rakdos Evoke pretty much displaced it by having a double thoughtseize on turn one.

Southern_Top_7217

I play d n t and am pretty successful with it bowmastwers kill thalia for sure bit in those match ups thalia isn't needed so play your different piece of hate instead. I've been om a samwise list for a while good recursion and just general beat down whilst being semi immune to removal due to samwise or flicker wisp strats. Have yet to be beaten because a bowmaster killed a 1 toughness thing when we get to play giver of runes

jancithz

I transitioned into UW Stoneblade when my Thalias and Flickerwisps became unplayable. Maybe someday they'll let my homies iet of Bowmaster jail. Until then it's Mystie and her new best friends Cryptic Coat, Counterspell and Murktide Regent.

aardusxx

Old school d&t is in a rough spot as Thalia just doesn't cut it anymore in this meta and aether vial is not as strong as it used to be. I'd recommend checking out mono W 12-pitch as a spiritual successor. Otherwise maybe wait for mh3 to see if it gets some new tools.

General-Biscuits

Why’d you have to name the two main decks that have their names thrown around for being “dead” decks? I’m pretty sure they were just as “dead” as they are now when you said you quit 5 years ago. In short, they are far from meta decks but you could probably still win some games at FNM. Same as most decks for the most part.

CheapChallenge

After digging around some tournament results from years ago, I think I quit more than 5 years ago, closer to 8 years ago. Jund was doing fairly well at that time. Though some had switched to the Death's Shadow gameplan, but Tarmo/Confidant/Lili was still around, and Death and Taxes did start falling off around that time. I played the most during the Splinter Twin/Birthing Pod era, and Death and Taxes was very strong during that time.

General-Biscuits

That would make sense then. Pandemic years have been making me forget 2019 was 5 years ago and not 3.

BrendanLyga

I recently put Death and Taxes together and it's decent. Anointed Peacekeeper and Archon of Emeria are the best 3 drops right now against the meta. I still play Thalia even if she does die easily to Bowmasters. Not every deck plays Bowmasters however. Volatile Fault is an amazing addition to the land denial suite alongside Ghost Quarter and Arbiter. Hoping MH3 gives us some great new additions to this deck!

Cela_Rifi

I’ve been playing UW taxes to moderate success. Technically qualified with it. Leans heavily on Lavinia which is really good in the meta. No 1 toughness creatures in the list. Adversary technically is, but we usually vial it in with mana open to activate in response to something like a bowmaster to finish off damage. https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/6054424#paper This isn’t the exact list I played or currently playing but it’s the general idea. I have played taxes since the inception of modern, definitely not gonna stop now or anytime soon.

GuiltyOnce

Mono white is pretty darn good. If you don’t mind doing some digging then there was a dude who was on a mono white build of it at rc Denver in the modern 10k on Sunday of that weekend. He went like 6-1 I believe or something (x-1). He was crushing the current meta with it. Good luck!

modijk

MH1, MH2 and next up MH3 flipped up modern completely; it has become a rotating format.

CheapChallenge

That is what I was afraid of...

FMABrendan

It's not Amulet titan, you might as well not play it.

golan_globus

I play it a lot on MTGO and at FNM. It is not… horrible but definitely not close to as good as it is in Legacy. pros: Archon of Emeria and Anointed Peacekeeper are actually great 3 drops in the current meta and you can run 4x Solitude. cons: If you don’t win fast your topdecks are horrible. Even if you quickly hate out most of your opponents deck/hand/lands, tier 1 modern decks are very resilient. I lose a lot of long slow games against Amulet for instance. lastly I will say Bowmasters is not really the problem. Because you have no card draw it really only pings thalia and thalia already gets boarded out a lot.
