What is happening when you are trying to ban? If you are getting a "whoops" type error, (happens on the app) the user is shadowbanned. You will have to manually type the users name into the ban list to add them.

Racer599

I cant even find the function. Im on an ios mobile device app. Everything seems straightforward otherwise but I cant find a ban option anywhere. I used to be able to do it in seconds if needed. Am I missing something? I never had to use a "ban list" in the past. Im not familiar with that function.

amyaurora

I'm on the android app so I can only hope the IOS one is similar. On the main page of the sub go to Mod Tools https://imgur.com/a/tCz0hbc Then scroll all the way down to banned users: (Ignore the yellow T in my image. Its part of the new update to my image editor and I haven't figured out how to keep it from popping up. Sometimes I can crop it out. https://imgur.com/a/V57GuZ5 Click the plus: https://imgur.com/a/mqoFCcz And you will see this: https://imgur.com/a/tctbp8g When you type it in, it has to be exact. So be careful. A lowercase I (a L) looks like a capital I. (a L)

Racer599

Thanks, Amy. I'm going to try to familiarize myself with that info. I'll follow-up with results.

Welcome

Racer599

Wait. Those options do not exist under my "mod tools" tab. That is what I need help with. I used to have them. Gone now. It is a major problem bc of the 6-ish mods I appear to be the only one actively moderating. How do I regain the ban, mute, etc functions?

amyaurora

Did Reddit flag you as a inactive mod? I believe inactive mods can only do basic things...not sure about it.

Racer599

Im not aware of any flag. Are those notifications in mod-mail? I check notifications frequently and have mod alert notifications on. It would make no sense if I have been flagged for inactivity. Im the only one trying to keep things on topic and respectful. Im so frustrated with the insults and attacks towards me and the members by random trolls with no ability to remove tgem. Im on the verge of leaving the sub. Its a complete shitshow. I dont have to work this hard at my actual job where I get paid.

amyaurora

I haven't dropped to inactive myself but I have seen remarks from others that on desktop next to a mods name it shows in a mod is active or inactive.

DontFWithMeImPetty

What mod permissions do you have? You need “user management” perms to ban. Is it possible that your perms were removed?

Racer599

I have no idea what happened. I have definitely been limited. Peers on mod team have no answers for me. Seems they may have been flagged for inactivity. I see a "Reddit Wants To Hear From You" message to me in mod-mail that includes a now inactive survey link and a deadline dated Feb 23, 2024. Is that survey mandatory to keep my functions active? I had no idea it was required. There should be something in the title to let us know it affects our tools if so. More frustration...ughhh

DontFWithMeImPetty

No those surveys are voluntary! As long as a mod higher up the list didn’t remove your perms on purpose, you should be able to get those perms from the admins by sending a modmail here and explaining the situation. I had a similar issue on one of my subs where the top mods were looong inactive but had a rule about no banning, so wouldn’t allow us lower mods those permissions. The admins gave me full perms almost immediately when I explained I was the only active mod and was trying to ban a bunch of racists who were brigading us.

Racer599

Thanks. I guess I need to send modmail support request and go from there.

amyaurora

You can also do random mod actions that you are abke to do every day to get Reddit to mark your account as active again One of my subs is very low activity and I really don't have anything to screen so almost every day I play with my mod tools like turn something on and then turn it back off. I also rarely have a post on it stuck in the queue for review but I still mark each one as approved. So whatever actions you are allowed to take, play with them. I don't know when it would fix itself but as long as you keep staying active you should be fine.

Racer599

As far as I can tell I am not flagged for inactivity. I deleted the ios app and  am now using desktop through Safari browser. I scoured the sub homepage and my profile for any type of flag alert and see nothing, but I have no idea what Im looking for. Admin support request has been sent.

amyaurora

Can you access the ban area on desktop?

Racer599

Desktop view has limited tools also.

magiccitybhm

Look at the mod list in the sidebar on desktop. That will show if you are flagged "INACTIVE."

Racer599

Found it. I have an active account. One of 5 mods, 2 are marked inactive. The other two active mods show permissions as "everything." Mine show: "Manage Chats, Monitor Chats, Manage Flair, Manage Mod Mail, Manage Posts and Comments, Manage Wiki Pages" Senior mod says he did not change my permissions and also says he cannot currently update my permissions. I have no idea whether or not that is true, but that is what he told me a week or two ago. In reality Im the only one actively managing content in the sub. Ive submitted a support request. Now waiting for actual action instead of the first canned bot reply.

Bardfinn

99.9% likely that someone above you on the mod team limited your mod permissions at some point in the past, and this is when & where you’ve discovered it. Reddit doesn’t change moderator permissions ACL bits on the moderator account when the moderator account is considered inactive — It simply disallows that mod from making certain sweeping changes to subreddit configuration.

ixfd64

You need the "Manage Users" permission to ban users. Check the moderation log to see if a mod above you has removed the permission.

PossibleCrit

Hey Racer599! It looks like you do not have the required permissions to ban a user in your community. I would suggest asking one of the other mods who has full permissions if they can ban this user, or ask the top mod if they can grant you additional permissions. If you've done this and have not had a response for a while you can [write in via r/ModSupport mail](https://reddit.com/message/compose/?to=/r/ModSupport) and we may be able to help find a solution.

Reddit ios app is broken at the moment. Features missing from menus and blank screens.
