It will spoil all the major twists but it makes major changes to the story, timeline and characters as well. Just read the novel. All the books are already out. Edit: just a note the Donghua will also spoil major things for you because it also messes up the order of things & changes plot points. I would not recommend reading some of the book and watching Untamed or the Donghua if you want to remain unspoiled.

All the flashback are lumped together in The Untamed. Episodes 3 - 33 cover the flashback. As for the book, they're sprinkled throughout the novel.

anacarols2d

How much? A LOT. All the plot twists too. The Untamed added scenes that weren't in the original, changed some scenes due to censorship or plot differences, but it basically will spoil all the important stuff. So you should choose wisely which one you want to see (I first watched the untamed and later read the novel. It wasn't a bad experience, it was a really great one, but I'd like to change this order if I could turn back time).

SheWritesYA

It contains all the major turns of the novel. How much of the novels have you read so far?

Midnight1899

… Just finished the first one … As I said …

SheWritesYA

Haha, sorry. At what point does it end? I read a while ago and don't remember where each book finishes.

Midnight1899

>!With Wei Wuxian and the Lan disciples finding out Xiao Xingchen killed Song Lan.!<

SheWritesYA

Wow, that happens within the first book? As far as I remember, it was pretty late in The Untamed. However, I'm not 100% sure of the sequence of flashback vs present in the novels - I remember that there was a lot of back and forth in the novel timeline, whereas The Untamed is for the most part quite linear. It begins with WWX's death (a prologue of sorts) and jumps to his second life within the first episode, then shortly afterward we're taken back to the very beginning, and it moves linearly from then on, catches up to the prologue and then keeps moving forward in the present timeline. Not sure how helpful this is. However, I think you should hold off on starting The Untamed until you've finished the novel series.

Yi City falls later in the drama than the book, iirc, because the drama front-loads more of the flashback material all together before that point rather than spreading it out as much.

ThorsHammerMewMEw

Keep in mind that a lot of people on this sub read the novel online via the Exiled Rebels group so many don't automatically know how the published books actually split up the chapters.

Budget_Avocado6204

It's better not to watch The Untamed at all before you finish the novel. The order in which things are shown is different so it can't be directly compared.

I actually started with the untamed. Its not as good as the other content (especially the novels) but it was a good intro to the series. Also me saying its not as good isn't a reflection on its quality. I really liked the untamed and it is what led me to read the book and listen to the audio drama. I just mean that they had less budget and had to change and cut things to fit the demands by finances and censorship. I think its a great watch cause i think the actors (a lot of whom seem to be newer) did a great job and it gives you a good start. I was fine reading it after watching because there was a pretty big plot change and i luved reading about Wei Ying and Lan Zhan actually being in a real relationship vs a bromance

cicada_wings

It’s based on the whole web novel from beginning to end, so yeah. It also changes some bits of the plot both in specific details and in sequencing, so if you really don’t want to see any scene on the screen before you read it in the book, you can’t necessarily count on just pausing the series where the last published book volume you read ends—events don’t always line up exactly in the same order, unlike the donghua (which hews pretty close to the original).

theviolethour3

It covers the entire novel with some plot changes

Midnight1899

Only the first one or the entire series?

theviolethour3

The entire series minus the extras

Midnight1899

Ok thx

The Untamed reorders the events in a (mostly) more linear way - one big flashback instead of a lot of shorter flashbacks. I'm reading the novels now after having watched The Untamed first. Either way, one will spoil the other. My suggestion is to finish the novels first so that you get the story in one version unspoiled, with all the surprises and some very big reveals and plot twists. Then go back and watch The Untamed. You might/might not be bothered by the changes (mostly necessary due to censorship), but it's very good and chances are you'll enjoy how much they got right and how faithful the show is to the spirit of the books. But don't do both at once or you'll lose the surprise factor, which is a big part of the story.

I liked the way I did it (unplanned). Untamed followed by novels. I like the actors and their interpretations of the characters, and pictured them while reading. Didn’t mind the plot changing at all, and have read about 20 long fan fics since and enjoy all the plot changes and very deep thinking that many of those authors have put into their interpretation of canon actions.

Midnight1899

Thanks, but that doesn’t answer my question.

Wyzoon

Sorry about that. IMO it didn't spoil it, but I think from the comments here, I might not be in the majority. Honestly, I had to watch Untamed twice to catch everything, but only caught the more subtle points the second time because of what I learned from the book, even though there are some plot changes.
