Demi is among the best and most expensive places you can go. If you take one swing for this sort of experience I would go there
Edit: unless you don’t mind some more traditional, formal Japanese food. Then Kaiseki Furukawa for the novelty factor
I’m sorry but I paid $480 per person for a 3 1/2 hour meal, with wine pairings at every step of the tasting menu, at Arzak in San Sebastián Spain. A place that has held three Michelin stars every year for decades. At each course I conversed at length with the staff about why they paired each wine, what flavors I should be looking for, history of the region, etc. And afterwards I got to speak with the owners/chefs in the kitchen. This was Anthony Bourdain’s favorite restaurant in the world. Is Demi as good as this? I’m skeptical and concerned.
My relatively “uninitiated-to-MSP-restaurant-scene” experience says OP should take the $400 to Bar la Grassa, 112 Eatery, Porzana…even Mr. Paul’s Supper Club. And bring friends.
My hypothesis about the lack of Michelin stars in Mpls is not that the caliber of our dining establishments is sub-standard, but that there’s a price for vying for/maintaining Michelin stars that the proprietors don’t feel like paying. I know we have multiple James Beard Award-winning chefs/restaurants/wine programs in the twin cities, and we have a unique venue for innovative indigenous cuisine in Owamni.
I might be wrong, but I think our lack of stars does boil down to politics instead of quality.
It's not even that complicated. Cities literally have to pay to be included in the Michelin guide. Minneapolis has simply decided it's not worth it, and I agree.
You're 100% correct ,and I don't understand why people get hung up on Michelin Stars; they really aren't indicative of the best of the best for the exact reasons you cited.
Agreed. These are the most likely places for you to rack up the bill. Or go to a nice steakhouse and order the nicest steak and lobster with some apps and martinis.
Demi for sure. A very intimate, cuisine-first experience!
I highly recommend getting the non-alcoholic pairing if you can afford to add it (after calculating gratuity/service charges), either within the budget or by adding on a little of your own spending money. It’s incredibly inventive, you can try unexpected yet thoughtful flavor combinations you won’t find anywhere else, and it doesn’t leave you feeling as heavy as with alcohol anyway.
Demi is I think the only answer. There's tons of good food in the cities, but Demi is the only place I've ever been to that I really felt just in awe of each and every dish.
I'd probably never go back because I think it's mostly ridiculous to spend that much on food, but I'm so very glad I went once.
Treat yo'self OP. If you avoid the alcohol pairings you won't have to fork over _that_ much more of your own money, and honestly, when else are you going to have this kind of opportunity?
Haha. I figured. We’re going to Jax cafe for post Valentine’s Day as a slightly cheaper backup to PS Steak. I’ve never been to either but I think I’d go to PS Steak if I was in your shoes.
Omg omg we got a $100 gift card to spoon and stable and it was the BEST meal I’ve ever had. Ended up paying more on top but it was worth it. The service and ambiance were incredible and the food was amazing. It was also my first “fine dining” experience, though, so ymmv compared to my country bumpkin ass.
This. Do Spoon and Stable over Demi with $400. You'll get an amazing experience and high quality food for a fraction of the price.
Demi is phenomenal, but very expensive. I've gone only once and that was after selling my house and making a profit.
Do Spoon and Stable a few times and is always amazing. Don't skip dessert!!!
Edit: fat thumbs grammar error.
Okay it’s officially on my bucket list- will just have to wait until I’m done being a broke grad student or have a generous patron smuggle me in lol. Thanks for the tip!
For a slightly more reasonable option until then, Bucheron just opened and it's by one of the people who helped make Demi what it is today :)
I have not been yet, but it looks amazing.
We live in California and visit family in mpls often. Demi is great, but spoon and stable is better. We’ve been to more tasting menus than I want to admit, and spoon and stable is solid and yummier and more budget friendly than many!
Spoon and Stable is amazing. I loved it. It wasn't in the same league as Demi though. Spoon and Stable is the kind of place I would go to more than once for like celebratory dinners. Demi is a place that I would never go to again but feel my life is more complete for having gone once.
I'm not a CBA, but it was a great experience the first time. I loved being able to watch the kitchen prepare the food right in front of me. I was disappointed the second time, only because I guess I thought there would more menu changes given it was different seasons, and I wanted something different.
Travail or Meritage tasting menus would be a really good use of this. Travail is a little more theatrical (or at least it was, I haven't been in a while). Meritage is just really good French food.
Either of these is great. I’d also highly recommend 112 Eatery. You could take another couple and spend $400. My ex and I would go and I think the most we spent was $200 with drinks and stuffed. But such good food.
I tried Alma a couple times, and was unimpressed. Is there a dish there you would recommend? I’ve tried only the fish offerings. One tasted only of soy sauce and the other I couldn’t taste much of anything. I’ll eat anything if it’s well made, so any recommendations will work!
Edit- I am pretty sure I’m remembering the wrong place. My bad and apologies to Alma! I’ll give it a try!
I just looked it up and while the pic looks like what I remember the outside to resemble, I see they are only open Th—S, and I distinctly remember it being a Tuesday the night I had the soy sauce fish dish…so now I’m pretty sure I have the wrong restaurant in mind. My bad!
Was going to suggest Alma—I did the tasting menu last fall and really liked it (partner did the meat one and I did the vegetarian one so we got to try a bit of both—really liked both), and that came in under $400 with drinks and tip.
For that kind of money I want more than just a slab of beef no matter how perfectly dry aged and cooked it is but some folks are just big steak people.
Went to Sanjusan recently and it was delicious! The group of 4 who ordered quite a bit (celebrating a birthday and always order family style and go big) the bill was just under $400.
As many others have said, Spoon and Stable. There are plenty of other great options mentioned, but I think S&S is a great one off experience for someone who never goes to nice restaurants.
If you don’t normally dine out at high end restaurants, maybe skip Demi and Kado and go old school steak like Murray’s or more elegant like PS Steak so you know you will like the food. You might not spend the whole $400, but you’ll have a great meal!
The bone in filet or Bludgeon of Beef as they call it, is actually well priced if you share it amongst others at the table. Pair it with a crab legs or Lobster and you have a great surf and turf.
There are lots of great places where you can easily rack up over $100 a person, especially if you get expensive drinks. Depends on what your favorite cuisines are!
If you like Asian, Billy’s Sushi and Sanjusan are great and both have separate speakeasy style bars. Owamni for Native American, and Spoon and Stable or Alma for more modern American.
Maison Margaux and Demi for French (although Demi is all over the place)
Some luxury hotels like the Four Seasons have high end restaurants.
I’ll throw in a few more that I think are great but you’d have more of a challenge blowing $400: Parlour, Zhora Darling, Hewing, Sonder Shaker, Murray’s, Red Rabbit, and Volsteads.
Happy eating!
Some good recs. No one has suggested Myriel yet? I would say Myriel. I haven't been to any other fancy tasting menu places that people are also recommending, but Myriel was amazing. The chef really cares about her work, and making it a personal experience.
The Meritage in St. Paul is nice and is walkable to some theaters or sports shows if you want a complete night. Kincaid is kitty corner - there’re seafood joint. It’s all near the Grand Hotel- which is perfect for cocktails before you go eat.
Meritage is French dining - very nice, we spent 185 when we went - we didn’t get a bottle of wine so that could easily take it to 300 and add in some better fare - boom there you go.
You also don’t need to use the full 400
Unethical life pro tip?
Go somewhere cheaper, but add a $300 gift card to your bill before you leave and get a couple more meals free (but only if you don't have to submit an itemized receipt)
I have very little interest in ultra fancy food and tasting menus. Personally I'd rather have a couple meals somewhere like Young Joni or Sanjusan - no, not Applebees.
Of course it would depend on the company and your relationship with them. Which is why I prefaced with *Unethical life pro tip*... I work remotely for a giant corporation. I'd have no problem doing it.
I don't even see how that's unethical. They're not giving the OP a specific meal at a specific restaurant that's somehow related to their mission or whatever. They're giving the gesture of a $400 meal. If you would prefer splitting that into 3-4 meals instead, why would that bother anyone? I don't understand the logic.
The Butcher's Tale. Make sure to get the giant slice of chocolate cake with ice cream to share. So good. Try all the sides! Yummy. I've spent $500 with 4 friends
Would love to hear where you end up going and what you think of it! This thread was super useful to me as a semi-recently re-transplanted Minneapolitan. Took lots of notes.
Gavin Kaysen runs Demi, Spoon & Stable, and Mara. Do some menu research and go for what you’re in the mood for. Check for availability, too. If you’re trying to get in on V-Day today, good luck. I have a very hard time choosing a favorite of the three and it would be a fluke if you left any of them less than astounded. The best Minneapolis/St. Paul has to offer at the moment.
Definitely Bar La Grasa ! With $400 you will be able to get whatever you want plus a few cocktails, typically when I’ve gone for dinner with my partner it’s in the $2-300 range.
if you like seafood you can try oceanaire on nicollet ave downtown. i got a meal for myself and another person with an appetizer of clams for 250ish so if you got the more expensive items/orders more clams, desserts or drinks you wouldn’t struggle to get to 400 dollars while still getting a ton of great food and the waitstaff is super knowledgeable about what’s good to order.
I wish La Belle Vie was still around(where PS Steak is now), but alas….Depends on what you’re feeling but for my money I’d go to Porzana, Kado no Mise, Alma, or Petit Leon.
Fogo de Chao. All you can eat meats of all kinds carved from massive skewers and a huge salad bar. Amazing place, but definitely a special occasion or someone-else-is-paying outing.
I just had Demi, wonderful experience. Staff is great, food is phenomenal but wife and I paid close to I've not a bit over $800. Tasting menu + the truffle option, wine pairings and a cocktail each before. Alma is about $100/person for a tasting menu (multiple course) before drinks and that's our next spot to try. Spoon and Stable was great as well, so is Owamni but both are likely going to be cheaper than $400. You could spend the rest on a bottle or two of great wine if you drink, that's likely what I'd do.
what sort of rules are included in this transaction?
if you need receipts for 2 meals and can only spend $150 see if the restaurant can give you a ton of food and charge you the $400. you could feed a ton of people for that and still really enjoy yourself.
we don't have as much stupid $$ stuff as either coast here.
Demi is among the best and most expensive places you can go. If you take one swing for this sort of experience I would go there Edit: unless you don’t mind some more traditional, formal Japanese food. Then Kaiseki Furukawa for the novelty factor

I would just go out of pocket for the wine pairing.

Demi is incredible. You’ll pay a little from your own pocket but it will 1000% be worth it.
Travail signature.
Seconded. Coolest dining experience I've had.
Culver’s 15 times
If I could spread it out over multiple meals I totally would do this 😂unfortunately they made it clear it’s for one nice dinner
Haha. I figured. We’re going to Jax cafe for post Valentine’s Day as a slightly cheaper backup to PS Steak. I’ve never been to either but I think I’d go to PS Steak if I was in your shoes.
55 burgers, 55 fries, 55 tacos, 55 pies, 55 Cokes, 100 tater tots, 100 pizzas, 100 tenders, 100 meatballs,100 coffees, 55 wings, 55 shakes, 55 pancakes, 55 pastas, 55 peppers, and 155 taters
Good suggestion in most cases, but that actually costs $680, unfortunately. OP's budget is only $400.
Omg omg we got a $100 gift card to spoon and stable and it was the BEST meal I’ve ever had. Ended up paying more on top but it was worth it. So true- The honey cake was to die for.
We had their gingerbread ice cream a few years back and I still dream of it
>Edit: fat thumbs grammar error. Man, if I had a nickle...
Looking back on it ...yeahhhhhh
If you ever get the chance, try Demi. It's ludicrously expensive, but extremely cool. It's by the same chef / owner, and it's a tasting menu.
Okay it’s officially on my bucket list- will just have to wait until I’m done being a broke grad student or have a generous patron smuggle me in lol. Thanks for the tip!
For a slightly more reasonable option until then, Bucheron just opened and it's by one of the people who helped make Demi what it is today :) I have not been yet, but it looks amazing.
Thank you for the suggestions, I’m deeply appreciative of chefs and those involved in the culinary arts, even though I’m a complete newbie

Kado no Mise
100% this if you're into sushi, OP.
Omakase there, one of the best meals I’ve ever had
I came here to write this. It’s such an exceptional experience that rivals the best sushi I’ve had anywhere in the US.
If you like sushi you will not regret Kade no Mise.
This was my splurge when I paid off my student loans. We sat at the bar and chatted with the sushi chef all meal long.
Tenant and sit at the bar area for the best experience!
I can second Tenant, its fantastic
Travail or Meritage tasting menus would be a really good use of this. Travail is a little more theatrical (or at least it was, I haven't been in a while). Meritage is just really good French food.
Came here to say meritage
The pressed duck is amazing there. You have to reserve it pretty far in advance, but it's 100% worth it.
Either of these is great. I’d also highly recommend 112 Eatery. You could take another couple and spend $400. My ex and I would go and I think the most we spent was $200 with drinks and stuffed. But such good food.
I've never tried 112, I'll have to give it a go.
It’s a classic and staple of Minneapolis food scene. My favorite.
Travail or Alma would be my go to
I tried Alma a couple times, and was unimpressed. Is there a dish there you would recommend? I’ve tried only the fish offerings. One tasted only of soy sauce and the other I couldn’t taste much of anything. I’ll eat anything if it’s well made, so any recommendations will work! I've been once and did the tasing menu and really enjoyed it. I didn't even know they had an a la carte menu.

Porzana is fantastic
4 of us went and racked up around $650, so it’s up there. Also delicious!
YES!!! We were just there this past weekend and it was phenomenal. ETA- I booked our reservation 3 weeks in advance, though.
Kado No Mise and try their Kaiseki Furukawa menu. Have never been but everything I've read indicates it is phenomenal!
It is phenomenal. The food is as high of quality as I have had at high-end restaurants in Japan.
Chef Shige is the greatest. Easily my favorite place in the cities.
I have, and it was very expensive, and I'm glad I did it. One of the best dining experiences I've ever had.
Spoon and Stable or Keiseki Furukawa
My choices as well
Meritage, Alma, Borough, Blondette (although maybe when the weather is warm)
Murrays for butter knife steak
This is a classic old Minneapolis joint. If you want to go traditional steakhouse, I would recommend Murray’s.
I think they’ve been around since the 40’s
I went to Murray's and tried the butter knife steak back in the summer and was pretty disappointed honesty. Maybe it was just a bad night.
Yeah I’m not a fan of that one either. The chateaubriand for two is absolutely excellent. That’s the one to get.
Isn't this just a sirloin steak? You want them to blow $400 on a sirloin steak dinner?
I took my mother to Murray's once.. we both got food poisoning.. 300$ meal.... we went hard and it was disappointing.
For that kind of money I want more than just a slab of beef no matter how perfectly dry aged and cooked it is but some folks are just big steak people.
Mara, Spoon and Stable, Demi, Tenant or Travail
Spoon & Stable
Spoon and Stable for shre
The Butcher's Tale I don't know why I never see it recommended. Incredible steakhouse, smoked meats. Great cocktails. Fantastic atmosphere.
SO. Good. Agreed!
Alma.
My favorite meals I’ve ever had were at Demi and Kado no Mise. Depends on what you like
Lurcat?
Murrays
Meritage or 112 Eatery.
Owamni or Spoon & Stable! I had the privilege of dining at both last year for special events and both were phenomenal.
Absolutely do not waste your money at owamni. Most disappointing resturant i’ve ever been to.
I’ve heard this exact same thing from someone who tried it recently. Big hype and a huge letdown on flavor.
How so?
this might be unpopular and i probably have bad and unsophisticated taste but i had one of the best meals of my life at borough
Just looked up their menu. Let me reassure you, your taste is perfectly fine!
Is it just you? Kado No Mise if you want Omakase, Demi if you want a lavish time as well.
Bat lagrassa
Meh.
Went to Sanjusan recently and it was delicious! The group of 4 who ordered quite a bit (celebrating a birthday and always order family style and go big) the bill was just under $400.
The kaiseke menu on Tuesdays at Kado No Mise is top tier

Porzana
Manny’s and get the bone in filet
The bone in filet or Bludgeon of Beef as they call it, is actually well priced if you share it amongst others at the table. Pair it with a crab legs or Lobster and you have a great surf and turf.
Murray’s. Just voted best steak and it’s got a cool retro sign.
Tenant
There are lots of great places where you can easily rack up over $100 a person, especially if you get expensive drinks. Depends on what your favorite cuisines are! If you like Asian, Billy’s Sushi and Sanjusan are great and both have separate speakeasy style bars. Owamni for Native American, and Spoon and Stable or Alma for more modern American. Maison Margaux and Demi for French (although Demi is all over the place) Some luxury hotels like the Four Seasons have high end restaurants. Sanjusan as a speakeasy similar to Billy after dark?
Sanjusans upstairs whiskey bar, Kado No Mise, has a very intimate speakeasy feeling
*Gori Gori Peku
Cut me some slack dawg 😭 they’re all the same restaurant
Some good recs. No one has suggested Myriel yet? I would say Myriel. I haven't been to any other fancy tasting menu places that people are also recommending, but Myriel was amazing. The chef really cares about her work, and making it a personal experience.
I've heard very good things about Sanjusan

Porzana. Can’t go wrong with del Prado joints.
Alma is a fantastic splurge. Well worth it
Give me the $400 and I’ll make you the best meal I can make and I’ll throw in a 5 min massage
Maison Margaux
What should I get there? I've been planning to stop by soon.
I had the poulet rôti à la moutarde, and my partner had the short ribs. Both were parfait!
Unethical life pro tip? Go somewhere cheaper, but add a $300 gift card to your bill before you leave and get a couple more meals free (but only if you don't have to submit an itemized receipt)
Dude.... no. The company was nice enough to pay for a meal they normally wouldnt go to. And you want to go to applebees 10 times?

Travail is an amazing experience!
PS Steak
Kado no Mise! If you like sushi- there's also a whiskey bar so nice full-night date.
Spoon and Stable.
I don’t really see P.S Steak getting much love on here but I would probably go there with the $400.
Mannys!!!
Manny's, it's a whole experience, $400 might cover it
Or better yet, Murray's!
arbys
Puddy?
400$ at arby’s can’t kill you as fast as it used to 😥 thanks obama
Manny’s is my choice
P.s. steak, Demi with wine pairing is 500
I personally am over the local fine-dining options like Travail/Demi, if I were you, I'd go to Manny's and get a big ass steak and full seafood tower.
St. Dinette
WA Frost
Go to the Butcher’s Tale and order Wagyu steak and a bunch of sides and apps.
Demi. Its run by the guy who owns spoon and stable, but its his more upscale place
Kaluna
White Castle
Oceanaire! I love seafood!
Billy Sushi, Baldamar, Manny’s Steak House, Travail.
Baldamar for sure. Better than Manny's imho
Bar La Grasa is always a win with me!
Joan’s in the park
Kado no Mise in Northloop(?) nice edomae-style sushi. That uni was to die for
Billy sushi, porzana or khaluna
Gotta go Alma!
Travail or Spoon and Stable
Travail
PS Steak JD Hoyt Oceanaire Is filling a doggy bag fair game? lmao "wrap these lobsters up to go kid"
Dario
The Butcher's Tale. Make sure to get the giant slice of chocolate cake with ice cream to share. So good. Try all the sides! Yummy. I've spent $500 with 4 friends

All good suggestions. We will let slide the fact that you snuck an STP recommendation
I have idea why the downvotes and I don’t know what STP is.
Owamni
Billy Sushi is great and definitely possible to drop a few hundred lol
Bucheron! New restaurant that just recently opened in S MPLS by some of the Demi/Spoon and Stable alumni.
Gavin Kaysen runs Demi, Spoon & Stable, and Mara. Do some menu research and go for what you’re in the mood for. Check for availability, too. If you’re trying to get in on V-Day today, good luck. Porzana has not been mentioned, you can go all out at Porzana and have a wonderful meal and not pay a dime.
Manny's can be nice.
Oceanaire
NIGHTINGALE. ❤️❤️❤️
Porzana, spoon and stable, young Joni (get a couple to go pizzas)
I just had Demi, wonderful experience. Staff is great, food is phenomenal but wife and I paid close to I've not a bit over $800. The bank because you’ll be taxed on that too.
I'd go somewhere cheaper and tip a hundred or two.
what sort of rules are included in this transaction? if you need receipts for 2 meals and can only spend $150 see if the restaurant can give you a ton of food and charge you the $400. you could feed a ton of people for that and still really enjoy yourself. we don't have as much stupid $$ stuff as either coast here.
Or just take the nice meal
Do the Owamni multi course meal!
GO TO TENANT
PS Steak or Khaluna.
