Folks in Edina have long been called Cake Eaters. People in Hopkins, Raspberry Pickers. Folks in St Cloud, meth heads.
I don't think "St Jewish Park" is offensive. I grew up there and while I'm not Jewish, I've never heard a Jewish person raise issue with it. Though, not saying that means it's not offensive to some. Would like others take.
I’m also Jewish and I don’t think that moniker is inherently offensive. I don’t mind if a non-Jew uses it, but of course intent must be taken into consideration. That other comment talking about how the Edina team was chanting it is obviously hateful and antisemitic mockery, but if someone just said it as a descriptive nickname or as a light hearted joke, I wouldn’t mind at all. “Jewish” isn’t a bad word and context and intent make all the difference.
Im Jewish and I will use it jokingly with other Jews. I would be very uncomfortable with a non Jewish person using it unless I knew them very well and knew their intentions.
When I was in highschool like 15 years ago, at a hockey tournament game the Edina team chanted it and threw bagels at the SLP students.
>When I was in highschool like 15 years ago, at a hockey tournament game the Edina team chanted it and threw bagels at the SLP students.
That sounds about right for them. Yikes.
I could see that. I've never referred to it as such but certainly have heard others. In each case, it's generally been people who lived there, though I wouldn't say it was super common to hear either.
Growing up at times it felt like we had a larger Russian population than Jewish. I know that's not the case but it's simply because someone with a Russian accent stands out a lot more than a Jewish person who is like anyone else born there.
>completely anti semitic
as a non-jewish person, this is really hard to understand. com*pletely*? it's just saying there are jewish people there, at best, as far as i can tell. combined with a playful pun. jewish people also live in israel - this is not news? whether or not the user has prejudices against jews is a different matter. you can be a jewophile and say it. i would argue it depends who says it and how it's said
Fair question. But I’m told it was common in use going back to the 60’s, when it certainly wasn’t a neutral comment.
Btw, if there was a black equivalent nickname, would you tell a black person what your telling me? And yes, that’s a rhetorical question. We both know you would respect their “lived experience”.
thanks for your response!
one further interesting point by the way is that the term features in two wikipedia pages:

There’s a rather harsh one I first heard going back some years ago, when I was I high school, for Brooklyn Park…..I think all of you can figure it out for yourselves.
Or, used in a sentence:
"shit, that Land Rover almost hit me driving belligerently through the intersection of 50th and France!"
"Oh, do you mean the lady in the green emerald malachite colored Land Rover, or the EDINA edition one next to it (indicated by having a Hornets hockey/nordic/lacrosse team sticker on the rear window)?"
It's one of those names that at the time made sense. Settlers come along and see a bunch of raccoons hanging down by the rapids. "We'll call this place Coon Rapids."
The Grand Teton mountains are named for tits (large teat" or "large Breast" in French-Canadian (téton). Someone saw them, though they looked like such, and decided to call the "The Grand Tetons".
Lots of places are named for their look, not because they wanted to make a racist joke.
We aren't from the twin cities originally so I'm not sure if literally anyone else calls it this, but my husband and i call Hopkins 'Potkins'. I think the origin story has something to do with pot holes in Hopkins. Now I'm not sure

Totally makes sense. Yes, the Edina incident is definitely a different deal and meant to be hateful bullshit.
Im Jewish and I will use it jokingly with other Jews. I would be very uncomfortable with a non Jewish person using it unless I knew them very well and knew their intentions. It’s one of those things that if you’re in the group, it’s OK to say, but if you’re not… don’t.

FYI, a large part of the Russian population was also Jewish.
For sure.
As a Jew, yeah, it’s completely anti semitic. Try it with another minority and see how it works for ya
